Saw Hahn in Stockholm about this time (Beethoven’s concerto) and was absolutely astonished how she was already a master of her craft. And she really knocked this out of the park!
This was performed in Tokyo's Suntary Hall on November 27th 2000, which happened to be Ms. Hahn's 21st birthday. Mariss Jansons is conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. Maestro Jansons had a long career as conductor, notably for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and he was known for his interpretations of the works of Shostakovich and other Russian composers, as well as Mahler. Ms. Hahn needs no introduction; she is considered to be one of the finest solo violinists in the world. She has won three Grammy awards and has been recently nominated for another.
Mariss Jansons led the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in the mid-1990s. I had the joy of attending his premier there, at which he conducted Mahler 's 1st, preceded by Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite." So amazing. As if I had never really heard either work before. The college I served during that period engaged the PSO in a partnership arrangement to attract audiences to annual concerts from our county north of Pittsburgh, and I got to speak with him on several occasions. A great, kind and thoughtful man, and an unexcelled 20th Century Conductor. The world is poorer for his untimely passing.
Thanks for providing more color bud!! I always find it helpful in engaging more deeply with performers and their work. Knowing where a band I'm not familiar with is from, for example, is a sure-fire way for me to remember them since there's so much music coming at us (i.e. sound fiends 😅)
Thank you for that biographical and musical data for this concert. This is a first listen for myself of this concerto and Hillary is the perfect violinist to experience this work. Such a remarkable artist whose temperament and personality are mirrored in her virtuoso play.

Agreed about Shostakovich not being able to have a piece such as this wonderful concerto performed while Stalin was still alive!! And the same goes for his 11th Symphony!! (Which was the first symphony he composed after all of Stalin's associates were no longer in power...and which is one of, if not the most, continuously intense full scale Symphony composed!! So not sure why I clicked on this except that Hillary is already a legend.. Anyway watched right through and very moved.. A stunning piece stunningly played by all.. What an amazing world we live in too that I can do this in bed with warm milk and a banana.. ;9)
What I love about this performance is that it is sooo different from the conventional interpretation but then it is also so precise. You can literally hear and build the chords in your head. Often times, the breaks are so slurred it is hard to hear the resonance of the chords against each other.
This is so fantastic. Beauty and sorrow ... (As Hilary Hahn herself put it in an interview...) It is a scandal that our russian fellowmen , artist composers , writers - a vast part of european culture now has become scammed because of this war. Putin is NOT the only one to blame. We are brothers and sisters and should make great art together like this. Weapon industry is what is the mind of our politicians not progress all the while the ecosystem brakes down..... This could be a lament for our time but hopefully the finale will be as here: Victory for peace, creativity and joy-
By 15 min mark my eyes won’t stop leaking. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Such…. Idk. Something in the DNA. Inspirational? Beyond normal human abilities or talent? Past composer’s deepest emotions? Pure beauty into my ears and eyes, straight to my soul? I just don’t understand. It happens even at the lower levels of musical talent. Incredible memory and confidence and rendering.

Tormented and lovely.
she makes playing of abstruse pieces as if it were from some Suzuki method, such a marvelous performance!

Requiem and brilliant virtuoso concert
well that was delicious..
I was slightly obsessed with violin concertos as a youth but some reason this one escaped me..
Then i got into other things and have not listen really to much classical for decades..
If fact I active disliked it for a while.. found the emotional roller coaster too much..
So not sure why I clicked on this except that Hillary is already a legend..
Anyway watched right through and very moved.. A stunning piece stunningly played by all..
What an amazing world we live in too that I can do this in bed with warm milk and a banana.. ;9)
Obra maestra, preciosa, extraordinaria, espectacular... y encima toca el violín.
genial comentario 👏👏👏
I agree.
Este concierto, marabillozo.algo asi como un pastelillo Hlandes.merci beaucoup.

What I love about this performance is that it is sooo different from the conventional interpretation but then it is also so precise. You can literally hear and build the chords in your head. Often times, the breaks are so slurred it is hard to hear the resonance of the chords against each other.
Incredible finale!!!!!
The best concert of my life !!!😍😍😘😘😘😍😍😭😭😭😍😍😍
15:51 epic moments ❤😎
37:28 very very epic and beautiful ❤😍😎
Great work, very good performance 👏 ❤
This is so fantastic. Beauty and sorrow ... (As Hilary Hahn herself put it in an interview...)
It is a scandal that our russian fellowmen , artist composers , writers - a vast part of european culture now has become scammed because of this war. Putin is NOT the only one to blame. We are brothers and sisters and should make great art together like this. Weapon industry is what is the mind of our politicians not progress all the while the ecosystem brakes down.....
This could be a lament for our time but hopefully the finale will be as here: Victory for peace, creativity and joy-
El arte de un gran maestro. Shostakóvich el gigante de la música del siglo XX.

44 minutes and 18 seconds of heaven
I love how even the authors of classical music put a pretty woman on the thumbnail so i click it.
Hervorragend Frau Hahn, ich liebe die Teufel Tanz! 13:29-19:36
Amazing!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Superb quality!
This is ultra-violet music. It points, to where violet is going to be.
A masterpiece ❤
Wow this is amazing
...ASTOUNDING!!!
Never heard this before!
If there was a way to hold a storm with a violin; this is how it would be done.
