Saw Hahn in Stockholm about this time (Beethoven’s concerto) and was absolutely astonished how she was already a master of her craft. And she really knocked this out of the park!

This was performed in Tokyo's Suntary Hall on November 27th 2000, which happened to be Ms. Hahn's 21st birthday. Mariss Jansons is conducting the Berlin Philharmonic.
Maestro Jansons had a long career as conductor, notably for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and he was known for his interpretations of the works of Shostakovich and other Russian composers, as well as Mahler.
Ms. Hahn needs no introduction; she is considered to be one of the finest solo violinists in the world. She has won three Grammy awards and has been recently nominated for another.

Mariss Jansons led the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in the mid-1990s. I had the joy of attending his premier there, at which he conducted Mahler 's 1st, preceded by Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite." So amazing. As if I had never really heard either work before.
The college I served during that period engaged the PSO in a partnership arrangement to attract audiences to annual concerts from our county north of Pittsburgh, and I got to speak with him on several occasions. A great, kind and thoughtful man, and an unexcelled 20th Century Conductor. The world is poorer for his untimely passing.

Thanks for providing more color bud!! I always find it helpful in engaging more deeply with performers and their work. Knowing where a band I'm not familiar with is from, for example, is a sure-fire way for me to remember them since there's so much music coming at us (i.e. sound fiends 😅)

@@facente Shostakovich was never the chairman of the musical Stalin Prize commitee, Myaskovsky was.
Dmitry Dmitrievich was for a short time an ordinary member of the committee, then expelled for an argument with the chairman and later reinstated -- also for not very long period.
And he knew too well that the attempt to publish a concerto like this could took him again into a big trouble like the one he had with "Katherina Izmailova" opera in 1936 .
He wrote this music "for the desk drawer" and the public performance became possible only after Stalin's death.

Agreed about Shostakovich not being able to have a piece such as this wonderful concerto performed while Stalin was still alive!! And the same goes for his 11th Symphony!! (Which was the first symphony he composed after all of Stalin's associates were no longer in power...and which is one of, if not the most, continuously intense full scale Symphony composed!! A true force of nature that work is, like Shostakovich himself!!!)

As a violinist who has played at this concerto for many a moon, and with no particular success, I must say that I admire Ms. Hahn's performance greatly. This is not a work for talented amateurs. Her technique and spirited playing set the standard for the rest of us. Shostakovich wrote 2 VIOLIN CONCERTOS, and I can't say i understand No. 2, but I've been in love with No. 1 since college. By the way, have you heard Shostakovich's SYMPHONY NO. 9? That's where he gave the one-fingered salute to Stalin, and lived to tell the tale. His memoirs--TESTAMENT--are well worth a read.

    warning: suicide attempts
this piece is deeply personal to me. I was extremely depressed a while back (and am to an extent but I'm better than I was before). I felt lonely, I felt bored and this piece almost spoke to me. I listened to the first movt over and over again. it made me feel less alone. It almost solidified my feelings. I did not realise it then but listening to it over and over again sometimes did make my depression worse.
one night, I randomly woke up, feeling hopeless and depressed. usually I would listen to the first movement during times like these. somehow I happened to listen to the 3rd. and it was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. it somehow managed to make me the tiniest bit more hopeful. after a while, I began to like this movt more than the first. the first solidified my hopelessness and depressive thoughts. the third movement, it somehow made me hopeful. in the smallest possible way. I listened to it over and over again, I cried to it hugging my pillow tightly.
I attempted suicide. and before it, I felt nothing. I only listened to this piece.
I was unsuccessful. I was petrified, I think, out of the fear.
I tried again the next day. I listened to this beautiful piece for one last time and I cried and cried.
I won't get into the details but i was unsuccessful yet again. i still continued to be depressed.
after a while, I was on medication and I went to therapy and it helped and I'm glad it did.
this piece was still deeply personal to me. i could now listen to the first movement without feeling depressed. I could finally appreciate its beauty.
but the third movement, every time I listened to it I broke down into tears. I did not understand why. it was always something that I felt was hopeful and uplifting amidst my depression.
I realised today that it made me break down multiple times because it reminded me of how I felt before trying to kill myself.
I can now listen to the piece wholly. the first movt still sometimes makes me depressed but now a days when I realise that it is making me worse, I turn it off. and I just listened to the third movement again and for once, I didn't feel hopeless like I did before attempting suicide, but the tiniest bit of hope. and I was finally able to appreciate how beautiful it truly was. I hope to learn it some day...
on the topic of music potentially making me feel worse, apparently it can happen sometimes when you are depressed as you might romanticize your sadness and stuff. if this is relevant to you, I encourage you to read up on the topic.

It's great to hear your thoughts and I hope you're feeling better now. Don't be afraid to reach out for help (I'm really concerned about all the people who go "I want to die lol" because Gen Zs like me are sad all the time)

    well that was delicious..
I was slightly obsessed with violin concertos as a youth but some reason this one escaped me..
Then i got into other things and have not listen really to much classical for decades..
If fact I active disliked it for a while.. found the emotional roller coaster too much..
So not sure why I clicked on this except that Hillary is already a legend..
Anyway watched right through and very moved.. A stunning piece stunningly played by all..
What an amazing world we live in too that I can do this in bed with warm milk and a banana.. ;9)

What I love about this performance is that it is sooo different from the conventional interpretation but then it is also so precise. You can literally hear and build the chords in your head. Often times, the breaks are so slurred it is hard to hear the resonance of the chords against each other.

This is so fantastic. Beauty and sorrow ... (As Hilary Hahn herself put it in an interview...)
It is a scandal that our russian fellowmen , artist composers , writers - a vast part of european culture now has become scammed because of this war. Putin is NOT the only one to blame. We are brothers and sisters and should make great art together like this. Weapon industry is what is the mind of our politicians not progress all the while the ecosystem brakes down.....
This could be a lament for our time but hopefully the finale will be as here: Victory for peace, creativity and joy-

By 15 min mark my eyes won’t stop leaking. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Such…. Idk. Something in the DNA. Inspirational? Beyond normal human abilities or talent? Past composer’s deepest emotions? Pure beauty into my ears and eyes, straight to my soul? I just don’t understand. It happens even at the lower levels of musical talent. Incredible memory and confidence and rendering.
