I do think it seems like you were reviewing it more with the standard 01 expectations versus the 01T clubs you had which are for more advanced golfers, so less distance and forgiveness. Id be curious how the 01's compare to the T's and other brands!

I’d like to see a review like this on the Takomo iron series. They seem to be getting very popular and a lot of people rave about them! I’m interested in them myself!
I play the 101T's and they are fantastic. If you know your shaft specs already then direct to consumer brands are a great option. Half the price of the big brands, they look fantastic and they feel amazing. I went from Callaway Rogue irons to the 101T's and there has been no drop off in forgiveness.
Damn, I do wish I knew of this brand 2 years ago when getting new irons. Definitely keeping them in mind for the future. I don't mind that the power isn't there. I actually prefer that they don't go a million miles and that the flight is somewhat consistent. Thanks for reviewing these smaller brands again!
These companies most likely aren't doing their own R&D. A number of DTC brands get their club heads from Deson Golf. That's probably why these look almost identical (other than the logos) to the Sub 70 699s and the Takomo 101s.
Maltby is probably the only DTC that isn't borrowing or buying foundry re-stamps. They're not just making clubs either, but they're innovating with club design as well. They have their own concepts and patented formulas that they specifically stick with. Check em out.
I almost got some takomo's (which are exactly the same club). I was going to get fitted for p790's and use the length/lie for the 101's. They were out of stock, so I just got fitted for some pxg 0211's xcor 2's($99/stick). I'm so happy to see that there are options for game improvement irons and even players irons that don't cost $1300 for a set. Golf prices have just been through the roof and I think that these DTC brands are going to put the larger companies in a tight spot from a value proposition perspective.
Had the previous model of Caley irons and loved them. Ideal for the mid handicapper. Very forgiving irons all round and worth buying over premium clubs.
Were you using the Tour version or their standard? I'm currently playing more of an improvement iron (Callaway RAZR X) but I've been getting a lot more consistent with ball striking. I've been wanting to get fitted irons, do you think I'd be hating myself getting the 01Ts as a 16 handicap?

I have Mizuno JPX 923 Tours that I just bought in May and I adore. Expensive set to be sure. The data from these irons is impressive for their price and I'm glad to see that. I don't feel robbed at all having spent nearly 3x the price on my Mizunos but I feel iron prices have just gotten criminal. You even mention it, 20 years ago they were priced around this. Now, I'd understand $800-900 for premium irons and MAYBE $1000 for sets that are 4i-GW but 1400 is just outrageous. Happy to see these direct to consumer brands making real strides in quality while staying cost competitive. Hope it can really humble some of the kings of golf equipment. If only we could get a golf ball that rivals pro v1s for a solid price. For me, I game Bridgestone B RX but still feel like Pro V1s are the absolute best golf ball around. In particular off the face of a blade putter they just give so much feedback and inspire so much confidence that I legitimately save strokes in my putting game with them.
I'm not even in the budget category, it seems. I'm in the 20-year-old second- (or third-)hand category, and that was a major step up for me from the charity-shop category.
These DTC brands are a great value. These look very similar to Pursuit irons, as most of these DTC brands are made in the same factory and then stamped with the branding. If anyone is interested in a DTC brand that does their own R&D, Maltby makes some stellar stuff for the same price range. Hard to get in the UK though.
Thanks Rick, great review. Any chance of a side-by-side comparison b/w the 01T's and the 01's (would like to see how much larger the club head is for the more forgiving version). Loving the HIT review channel, please keep them coming!
@jasonconcard157 If you did buy the 01T's from Caley, and were sold on the foam + tungsten, beware they don't actually have those features. They changed their website 3 weeks ago.
Nice review. Because of their huge R&D budget, clubs from the big brands will almost always perform better than smaller DTC brands. The real question is how big the difference is and if it is worth the ridiculous price difference. It's at least worth testing them out. I have been playing a set of New Level Golf irons for a couple years now and for my game I don't think they perform much different than the big brand irons I tested.
not to mention their huge marketing budgets. How many drivers does TM have to sell to recoup their $100M sponsorship with McIlroy alone? Probably quite a few I'd guess.
I think with irons it’s all about what you prefer, when I used to play a lot I played the titleist 714 mbs and they were amazing, for a blade they were forgiving, went miles, could hit all kinds of shots with them, now after not playing for a few years, I started playing a little after lockdown and got given a set of the taylormade p790s, I truly find they are nowhere near as good, the feel and looks are nowhere near what I expected, if I was to play more no way would I keep them in the bag, the only club I find amazing is the 2 iron, for me I don’t feel irons have come a long way in the last 10 years tbh, so maybe the cheaper irons have caught up and its worth saving the money for a decent driver, the driver is the second most important club in the bag now (putter always first) the big brands are untouchable with the big stick
With your concerns about the grooves and wet conditions, I was expecting you to do a wet test. Would really have liked to see that. These clubs are nice looking, but performance is key. I think these might be worth looking at.
I love my Ben Hogan Icon irons, which I bought at a relative bargain. Forged irons have a FEEL, that cast irons lack. Hacks like me can enjoy the feel of a good shot, and that's why people love golf
Judging by the photos, I reckon the new Costco Irons will be very very similar to these Caley irons (and most probably the Takomo irons too since they're from the same factory apparently)... but will be even cheaper and hopefully just as good.
I have the LAST set of big brand irons in my bag now. My wife got me fitted for Callaway Apex DCBs when they came out in 2021. Next set are going to be DTC!
Unfortunately guys like Rick or any of the other UA-cam golf personalities won't likely ever be reviewing Maltby clubs. I had a chat with Britt Lindsey at Maltby and because they won't participate in giving out free sets for reviews like all of these DTC brands that we're seeing, AND no UA-cam reviewer will likely ever come out of pocket to buy a set of Maltbys, this is a dead discussion. It's really unfortunate because Maltby are 100% original designs. Craftsmanship, and quality are far greater than any of these other generic looking DTC models, and they actually have decades of design pedigree and history. Unbeknownst to Rick, a set of TS4's could be his next gamers but he'd never know because they'll never cross his path. 😢
@@AZstu324yeah, I actually live about 20 minutes from their HQ. Really awesome people over there. But I've heard the same about them not really wanting to push their clubs on "influencers". They frankly keep busy enough that they probably don't need it. Still, I wish more people would know about them. They really are outstanding clubs. I haven't hit the TS4 yet. But have gamed the TS1/TS1-IM. Put them up against comparable clubs and they are every bit as good, with zero compromise. They're actually better than a lot of the stuff I've hit from Callaway and TM. I think the only irons that felt better were the Mizuno 223/225. Hoping Rick will see this comment though and shell out a couple hundred bucks for a nice sampling of the Maltby irons. He is one of the most unbiased and genuine reviewers out there. Who really seems to care about informing consumers. So, maybe there's a shot that he'd come out of pocket to give them a try.
I bought some Sub 70 irons and they felt good but I lost a little distance. Could have been more due to the shafts I chose. Today I dug deep into the closet and pulled out a Nickent 4dx driver I used several years ago. I bet it's at least 12 years old. I compared it to my Taylormade SIMS driver and the results were very close. Hardly no difference. In fact I like the looks a little more with the Nickent. I may put it in play again. ha
These are some insanely strong irons. I play Ping eye 2s and the PW from Caley is 6 degrees stronger, the Titleist AP2 PW is 2 degrees weaker than the Caley and 4 degrees stronger than the Ping eye 2. The 790s, that they mimic, is 1 degree weaker. They look great and the price is reasonable. I'd be interested in trying them but beware that the clubs are strong. This may be the trend of new clubs to be strong but be aware of the distances claims.
I’ve noticed that more and more golfers are looking at DTC clubs and the second hand market because the bigger name brands are becoming way too expensive.
I always buy the previous year clubs save hundreds and still getting big brand premium product, that are quite honestly not any different than the brand new ones.
Good work Rick, thank you we watch your channel as much as possible,we love what you do. We believe you give some of the best honest reviews a consumer could ever need.Keep it up
Really enjoy the videos. Have you ever done a comparison of your GC Quad against actually measuring your shots. Always been amazed at the stats the quad gives from a static position.
Great video. Love the content. I know you tested a brand called Takomo a little while ago. Was wondering if you’d review them again. They have more options for clubs now. Particularly interested in a review of their new wedges that they have come out with and see how they compare to the competition.
hi Rick and team. Thanks for the review. I am a 24.2 hcp player and currently use a Wilson Launchpad 2 irons, but am now planning to buy better looking irons which are suited for high hamdicappers. Along with my other friends who are also at my level are totally confused about whether to buy Caley/Tokomo which are the dtc brands, or buy wilson Dynapower for high handicappers. Can you please do a comparison between Caley/Tokomo and Wilson Dynapower please. Both are of same price points, but one is a well known brabd with better resale values. So please advise. Thanks Som
Rick, when you test clubs in the studio you have a good rhythm. When you are out on the course you are walloping your irons and regularly coming up short. Maybe club up and swing with more rhythm on the course!
Rick thanks for another great review! It would be great if you could do a review on the Maltby KE4 Max irons from The GolfWorks. Another very affordable option of clubs and would love to hear your thoughts.
I got a second hand (hit once at the range) set of fx77 4-pw by ram for under 400 and i couldnt be happier. Same problem with distance but for my level, they are awesome. By my level, i mean that i splurged on a cobra 4h because i cant hit driver to save my life, but i did break 90 (barely) last year
You should test the clubs longevity. Give them to your viewers to test over the course of half a season. Will the cheaper/DTC brands last as long as established ones?
I think that if Rick is really serious that his current golf bag is an open book like he mentioned in his podcast, then he would place a DTC set of irons in the bag and prove that the OEMs are in trouble. Sub 70, New Level, Tokomo all make really good clubs as well and are very affordable for the rest of us. We can no longer afford $2k for a set of clubs!
And even Costco throwing their hat in the ring with their Kirkland Irons that are apparently coming up in November. They look super similar to these and the Takomo irons so really expecting similar performance for even cheaper.
I think rick kinda missed who these irons are made for. I dont think you buy these irons with the intention to keep them long-term. Just great beginner irons at a proper price to get you playing. Once your game improves, your irons will obviously improve as well. Now, as far as price goes for the mid to low handicap player, i feel you will pay more than double for anything decent
Hello Rick, thanks for video. After watching thia video went to Caley's website and checked their return policies...Iron set alone can be return unused! Which is to me kind of fishy and that sets apart other brands from this. Keep up the good work!
Sorry, this is not open to debate! A purchase based on looks does NOT guarantee anyone hit good or better, the"feel" of club is not permitted on your policy since states "unused" meaning cannot be hit. Fishy is more of a hassle, you purchase, wait x amount of time (can be weeks or months) if return same process. Not sure if worth the time in my opinion, but its not intended to offend anyone at all! Best of luck!!
£450 is the exact same price my dad paid for a brand new set of tp9’s xmas 1992 when i was 13. 3 to SW. absolutely loved those irons. £450 is nothing today
@RickShielsPGA, If you had to describe the difference in feel between Aerofoam hollow body iron to a full solid metal forged blade, how does they differ from each other?
Any advice from anyone really appreciated. I was torn between these & the Tanoko’s but import tax the deciding factor to edge with Caley’s. Been offered a deal of £649 for Driver, 3 & 4 hybrid, 01t set, SW & LW for £649 (no bag). Is that a good deal? Should be able to sell my Nicklaus Air Draw set for £100 to a mate who’s starting out to offset some of cost.
@@PSINXS no it in fact is true, most golf balls being multilayered has created the ability for anyone to succeed using them. The AVX is the perfect example it’s a low launch/low spin ball that goes a mile slotting as one of ballnamics favorites for high speed players, and guess what it’s 77 compression. Many slow to mid swing speeds with spin issues have no issues going to a left dash. The only time compression matters is when a guy like Kyle Berkshire hits a 30 compression ball and breaks it every few swings.
These look like great irons for a player who knows they want to play Golf, but maybe aren't ready for a fitting since their swings are WIP. If I knew about these a few years ago, I probably would have purchased since I was using 20 year old hand me downs
I have this set and absolutely love them. Granted I haven't hit the T200 or P790 but when these are a fraction of the price I didn't want to anyway and I have to say I have never hit a better iron. I moved from a game improvement iron into these as I was getting too many left shots from the offset and these instantly sorted that problem (along with getting them 2 degrees flat). I get consistent distances and they are super forgiving on off centred hits. It may just be a coincidence but, since getting these, my handicap has come down 6 shots.
Awesome video! Would love to see you hit some of the higher end Tour Edge clubs their exotic irons look very similar and are around $500 for a full set
The Caley look more traditional… the Adams have a futuristic look to them …. I think they will appeal to a different audience. Will be interesting to see which is longer and more forgiving. My money is on the Adams as they are still essentially made by Taylormade

I may put it in play again. ha
Caley & Takomo clubs were on the top of my list in 2021 before I bought the PXG 0211 clubs.
ahh shame!
Might need a comparison between these and the new Kirklands
I’ve noticed that more and more golfers are looking at DTC clubs and the second hand market because the bigger name brands are becoming way too expensive.
I always buy the previous year clubs save hundreds and still getting big brand premium product, that are quite honestly not any different than the brand new ones.
Yes . Without doubt
Good work Rick, thank you we watch your channel as much as possible,we love what you do. We believe you give some of the best honest reviews a consumer could ever need.Keep it up
This is why I subscribed! I love the more realistic equipment reviews
Really enjoy the videos. Have you ever done a comparison of your GC Quad against actually measuring your shots. Always been amazed at the stats the quad gives from a static position.
Great review, as always! I know you reviewed the Callaway Edge box set previously, but I'd love to see a re-review in the H.I.T studio!
Have what I have heard about caley advertising that they have areofoam tec in them to find out they haven’t true? Anyone know
Great video.
Thanks
Som
Rick, when you test clubs in the studio you have a good rhythm. When you are out on the course you are walloping your irons and regularly coming up short. Maybe club up and swing with more rhythm on the course!
Be great to see the comparison between Caley, Takomo & Haywood irons. All up against the big names
Great video Rick! I'm looking for a new set of irons and at $589 USD these are worth a look.
Try takomo !!!
Might not be getting the "distance" feel you were after, but the dispersion was certainly impressive
Rick thanks for another great review! It would be great if you could do a review on the Maltby KE4 Max irons from The GolfWorks. Another very affordable option of clubs and would love to hear your thoughts.
When you love these, try the Takomo 101t. I play them and i love them!
I bought a set last week. Excellent irons, been playing Mizuno for around 15 years.
Great video! What is the hitting mat you use?
I got a second hand (hit once at the range) set of fx77 4-pw by ram for under 400 and i couldnt be happier. Same problem with distance but for my level, they are awesome. By my level, i mean that i splurged on a cobra 4h because i cant hit driver to save my life, but i did break 90 (barely) last year
These look EXACTLY like my Takomo 101 irons with a different logo. Same grip and shaft as well. I've had them since January 2023 and love them.
I would love to see what you think of the Ram Fx-77s Rick. I just got them and love them.
I think for the average Joe, those items would be brilliant, another great video Rick 👌
Try the Ram FX77’s. They really are very good!
The caley clubs look great. I wish you could go to a range and hit some to try them though
I wanna see you test the RAM FX77 irons. Would love to see what they’re like for £299!
Rick, cut into one to find their claim of both foam and tungsten as lies.
Do you have photos you can provide? I know this to be true as well!
Great review, thanks Rick. Does your testing facility need to have a rain simulator and a wind machine? Maybe some of the rough from Marco Simone too
I think these are the same as the Ram FX77 and Takomo 101's. Similar price points as well.
Hello Rick, thanks for video. After watching thia video went to Caley's website and checked their return policies...Iron set alone can be return unused! Which is to me kind of fishy and that sets apart other brands from this. Keep up the good work!
what's "fishy" about that?
Sorry, this is not open to debate! A purchase based on looks does NOT guarantee anyone hit good or better, the"feel" of club is not permitted on your policy since states "unused" meaning cannot be hit. Fishy is more of a hassle, you purchase, wait x amount of time (can be weeks or months) if return same process. Not sure if worth the time in my opinion, but its not intended to offend anyone at all! Best of luck!!
Big brands are killing the game for those who just want to begin or those not looking to be super involved
we agree
From the back, they’re looking a lot like the Cobra RF Rev33s which is a fantastic looking club!
Hi Rick. Has your opinion changed on the clubs since half the 'technologies' they claimed have been withdrawn, like the tungsten weight and areofoam?
£450 is the exact same price my dad paid for a brand new set of tp9’s xmas 1992 when i was 13. 3 to SW. absolutely loved those irons. £450 is nothing today
You should cut it apart and compare it to a p790… can’t imagine them being that much different
Rick how are you padding your screen to reduce the bounce back of the balls? I'd like to know your method.
Pxg, takomo, sub70, now caley. Is direct to consumer taking over?
you better believe it!
@RickShielsPGA, If you had to describe the difference in feel between Aerofoam hollow body iron to a full solid metal forged blade, how does they differ from each other?
Consider a driver review (1 - 10 etc.) and I always looked forward to your 5 year brand reviews on drivers, fairway woods etc.
Hey Rick could you please discuss the different compression balls considering club head speed such as senior golfers
With modern layering and cover materials compression is basically a non factor.
@@JaxRedsnot true, a softer golf ball for slower swing speeds def makes a difference.
Did you get the 01 or 01T?
I was interested at first- but those shallow grooves concern me. Great video. Thank you
we sorted that issue 😉
I recently received a set of 01's, i can confirm the grooves look good 👍 absolutely beautiful set
I'm probably not the first to make this observation but it would have been nice to match the 7 iron against a 790, both wet and dry.
Awesome video! Would love to see you hit some of the higher end Tour Edge clubs their exotic irons look very similar and are around $500 for a full set
PXG pioneered the foam technology that has allowed iron faces to become thinner so they are hotter and more forgiving.
I believe the X refers back to the St Andrews Cross.
Rick, please review the Takomo 101 irons.
Can you get a review on the Takomo irons???
Love to see you do a comparison of these, Taylormade p790 and takomo 101/101t. Great video ❤
Aren´t these exact copies of the Takomo 101T?
It´s a bit funny that the clubs are called 01 & 01T compared to Takomo´s 101 &101T.
😂 that’s what I’m saying
Can't wait to see how these match up against the Adams Idea 2023 ones that he has! Love the videos!
The Caley look more traditional… the Adams have a futuristic look to them …. I think they will appeal to a different audience. Will be interesting to see which is longer and more forgiving. My money is on the Adams as they are still essentially made by Taylormade
@@jameshopcroft8743 Very true! Very interesting indeed
Great video. No lefty option? Disappointing, but as a lefty golfer in the USI'm used to it.
A positive from these are flyers aren’t as prevalent, strike it well and you know the distance they will go. That should be the number one thing.
Have you ever considered doing a spectrum of clubs that have been reviewed? Similar to the review wall that top gear used to do. It would be interesting to know where budget clubs like the caleys compare to top brand clubs like the p790 etc
