    James is so positive and Rick talks himself out of the shot before he’s played it (“135, that’s not a great distance for me”, etc). I’m a complete hacker but my biggest issue is the mental side - I shoot +12 on my own, I shoot +16 with friends and I’m a 24 handicapper because I fall apart when it matters. My mindset with every shot on a “proper” round is “don’t cock this up!” ….. no wonder it’s bad 🙄. We’ve all seen Rick suffer with his mental side and I really sympathise - I would love to see some videos where Rick talks to someone who can help him with the mental side. Good luck Rick 👍

      It's amazing isn't it...the very fact that Rick doesn't realize this is amazing....him being a PGA Pro, Gives/gave lessons all the time, and has a long history in the game. He just doesn't know how to play many shots....or which shots he should be playing and you'd expect that part to be his biggest positive with all the experience and everything....but it just isn't.

      @cmaterick 6 місяців тому +11

      @@RhinoViper There's a big difference being a PGA Pro teaching swing mechanics and the basics to beginner and intermediate players vs. a PGA Tour Pro training to think their way around any golf course. That's why Rick is getting this help from James. He knows where his skills are lacking whether physical or mental and is, I believe, genuinely trying to improve.

    • @RhinoViper
      @RhinoViper 6 місяців тому +5

      @@cmaterick Well, for sure he's trying to improve...but his course management is about as bad/basic as it gets...not good at all...I don't expect him to be a Tour player, but it's just bad...he has a ton of experience, plays all the time, plays with pros all the time, played in tournaments in his earlier career...but his course management and the things he does wrong are things he just shouldn't be doing wrong.

    • @cmaterick
      @cmaterick 6 місяців тому +2

      @@RhinoViper I'm not defending his course management skills or lack there of. I'm just saying being a PGA Pro doesn't automatically mean you have good course management. I know several PGA Pros that barely even play golf. They spend so much time teaching it that they have little interest in playing it. Same with several USTA Pros I know around here who avoid playing tennis any more. It seems like this practice round was more about trying to correct your technique instead of learning the golf course. Your coach nailed a few things early. 1) You have to stay in the moment. The shot in front of you is the only one that matters. 2) You have to trust your pre shot routine and do it consistently. I would also say that your practice swings need to resemble the shot you’re about to hit. Especially with the short game. Use the rehearsal swings to capture the feel then step up and repeat it. Oh, and stop saying “you can’t miss greens” and start saying “I must hit greens”. The difference is subtle but powerful.
    Just my thoughts, good luck. You can absolutely do this!

    Great to hear some player-caddie conversations! James provides some good additional insight for higher level play. But Rick, a fine example where your swing needs loads of work is your second shot on the first hole, under pressure you will always be destined to hook the ball. Hands separating from the body, clubhead traveling way outside, early wrist hinge, and right shoulder drifting towards the ball.

    To Mr. Rick Shiels: This is What you've needed for a LONG time.
    Especially on the "Break 75" videos, you get stuck inside your own head when things start to turn sour, and you're never able to bring yourself out of it while the entire round of golf just spins out of your control.
    Having a decent caddy (I'm not referring to your friend here as decent, he's clearly something of an expert), or even just a friend to play with, is able to point out the things you need to hear and provide that little bit of observation that brings an improved consistency to your golf game.
    Actually, that gives me a weird idea: If you have a friend who would like to get into golfing, but is afraid of embarrassing himself, maybe have a series where you actively coach him, and see how that affects your level of play. Or maybe that's just a stupid idea.

      I was thinking the same, but I feel overall the focus was more on course shot selection than on swing technique - I didn’t see much that massively undermines the technique and approach from Dan, just some subtle hands and face manipulation on setup (though I saw enough for it to be on my radar and to relate to your comment!). Also have to remember this video is a cut, and I suspect James is mindful enough, to not be trying to introduce significant changes a week out. If anything the lesson learned to walk up and have a look, and stick to routine is a great takeaway, for Rick and the rest of us.

    It was so interesting to get a tour pro’s insight into how to setup and play the shot. As James said ‘aim small, miss small’. It’s the little things that we sometimes overthink which causes doubt in our abilities. You gots this Rick. Open 2024 all the way!!!
