The term "3 x compression" is a bit misleading, it should really be "3 x perspective compression" as "3 x compression" is a totally different thing. It is an interesting by product of using a telephoto lens and often used by landscape photographers, thanks for pointing it out to drone photographers.
It's funny that you filmed some grain elevators in your video and I think that will be my first real use of the thing, filming grain bins and whatnot for youtube videos.
I agree with MrC0rx… What you are changing when cropping in is the (effective) sensor size. Much like putting the same focal length on an APS or a Full Frame camera. The only difference is exactly that, i.e. the sensor size. The Compression effect comes from the field of view, which is the same regardless if you use the telephoto lens or if you crop the wideangle picture to the same field of view.
I think the 3X zoom is gonna be a norm for drones from now on. Can be useful in certain situations where you don't wanna get too close, but can zoom in to get that close up shot from afar. This can be a benefit to local emergency management and law enforcement when they're doing search and rescue or manhunt operations.
Great explanation on why the optical (compression) zoom really matters. My hope is 2024 brings us an Air 3s with a 1" stacked sensor along with the 3x camera plus a bit more flying time per battery. A bonus would be an adjustable aperture but that's probably asking too much. As long as I'm wishing, I'd wish for it to be more stealthy too.
I've also used the zoom for filming a marching band competition. I wanted to build a see the band members but I didn't want to be so close to people could hear the drone this allowed me to stay back where I'm not over any people. Also filmed some eagles eating a fish on the ice. I was able to stay far enough back to the eagles were not pressured.
To show "compression" you need to frame both images as similarly as possible. Not show the 3x camera from the same position, that just shows the difference in zoom. So fly back with the 3x camera or forward with the wide-angle lens.

You can be further up and away - Which is a benefit for town based locations like castles etc

Besides the resolution there’s no difference between optical and digital zoom. You will have the same compression either way.
