I can tell you love what you do brother! Keep that drive and passion for the job that you have! We learn something new every day as well as never stop teaching the youngins. You are working wonders for young roofers looking to master the trade!!!
Thanks for your service to our country. Also way to make roofing good again! 🤟🏼
I have watched a more than a few of your videos and what I appreciate is the passion you have for the work. Your attention to detail and doing the job fast and efficiently is harder to find than it use to be.
Watching this brought me back to my roofing days in my 20s. :) Rebuilding my family's cabin roof this weekend and needed a refresher. Thanks!
P.S. Getting quality crews 20 years ago was just as hard to do as it is today. LOL. I feel for ya!
My thing was if you're not on time for no good reason, don't bother showing up at all. His lost day's pay was split between the guys, as a bonus for the extra work they had to do especially when closing in a roof. Sometimes we had too put the foot down to get the point over otherwise they'll try too take advantage of the situation. It was always the new guys. They learned. Roofing and windows were our main moneymakers, not siding. The siding took too long. I miss it but I don't miss it. That's a nice job you have there, later......
Lombardi time . Be there 15 early ,plan shit out
My favorite tear off tall is a razorback shovel.
I’ve used the other shovel thing with the teeth but I do not like it. Everyone has their way that works better for them. Love your videos keep it up
Dude I really appreciate all the comedy makes my hard working remember their rookie days
I've got a really funny one for you next! I let a 43 yr old grunt shingle n I watched him closely the entire time. he lost his shit on camera coz I was "chicken hawkin"
They let their mind be their body up. A good motto to live by and to help you not let self doubt stop them from doing whatever a person has set out to do. With that being said, you do not want someone on a job site who is afraid of performing the job. A good manager, supervisor, boss would take a moment to talk with them one on one and offer to take them up on the roof and work side by side with them for an hour to help them build their confidence. Show them how to work safely in a dangerous environment. I know time is money and it may seem like you do not have the time to teach someone or to help build the confidence and skills to do the job at hand. But if you take the time, teach them, show them, work with them for a few hours to see if they can grasp the task at hand and perform it to the level you expect you just might have an employee who will come back tomorrow. Just saying is all
I was taught to always start from the bottom, scrape from the corner , and work my way up. After all the shingles come off then use a flat bar to tear off the old felt, and then flashing and pull nails. Really cool to see the way you do it
uh i believe someone was messing with you when they taught you to tear off from the bottom . makes as much sense as roofing it from the top down .
You can remove way more square from the bottom up,only draw back is you have to come back through and pull nails with a shingle shovel
@@joesmoth2610 That's exactly how I did it. I don't roof anymore though ( thank god)
This video definitely will help for my 1st day starting today of my new experience on roofing this video went a long way for me to learn what to do Immediately aha great video
Lol right on. Just keep in mind there's a lot of other ways to do this so whoever you're working for will prolly expect something a little different. But don't be afraid to bust out my tricks if you need to
@@NWIVeteranConstruction haha my first day is monday at 5:30 never done this bvefore but super exsited gonna be about 110 degrees to
on my first day
Nice man ! Can`t wait for the next video 👍
should be posting it tomorrow! make sure you hit that bell
Thanks for showing how to start. Starting by pulling off the old shingles. Good info. The guys are great!
110 Square. Wow that's a really big roof. I will never forget the roofing company that I work for about a year or two ago we had to do at least a 140 square tear off and put on with shingles. It was a giant very steep church roof. It took us like 5 or 6 days to get it all done. It sure was a lot of garbage to pick up on the ground. But luckily though there was a couple of extra guys that the boss told them to help me pick up the trash.
If you line the ground with smaller 8x10 tarps on top of the larger ones,2 or 3 guys can pick the whole tarp up as opposed to wheel barrels or garbage cans or picking them up twice. An 8x10 will hold a square or so without tearing and makes clean up a breeze.Finding good guys is my biggest problem,The struggle is real no doubt.
wow, how did that never cross my mind! advice taken bud! we usually just use the big ones because we almost NEVER let anything hit the ground. but there was too much real estate to walk on this one. but yea good guys are the hardest thing to find. everybody good is drug attics/alcoholics and don't have a license or vehicle. I teach the young new guys now, that way they just learn my way and they don't bring the hack ass shit from their last company to mine. that's what inspired me to make this channel. I got tired of teaching the same thing to guys that don't stick around. so now I can tell them to familiarize with a video (i.e before we start siding or before I let them shingle for the first time) and also, I want other guys like you to be able to tell your guys "hey, go watch this specific video before we jump into that tomorrow, I do things a little different but at least you're not coming into it blindy"
Thanks for the video.
stand below the shingles you are stripping, strip 2 or 3 at a time make neat piles and work down the stair. after you come back and pick up piles and throw them right in the trailer or bin whatever you have. nice and neat then you dont have to clean everything off the ground.
they slide right off so we just let them anyway. its a 7. lil bit hard to do it that way, that's why i was shaking my head in the beginning. it was goin terribly
Lol
That’s what I’m talking about; we don’t even have a ground crew, don’t have to clean a mess if you don’t make one.
@@shanesmith6384 absolutely right I have no ground man and minimal clean up work
Yep
Nice bud better if you smoke a joint first though makes it sooo much easier
hahaha
I concur

Amen brother roofers got to get high before the get high
Thats my Advil, Tylenol and Red Bull for every morning tear off
Thank you for the videos about to take on my garage
We was really getting it on one few years ago...Stevie was killing it stroking the pitch fork down one in each hand....3 toters couldn't keep up...bout half way down Stevie screamed......one of the old square head cap nails turned up and Stevie burried it in his knuckle.deep ...like 3 quaters ......slowed way down after that.....
What do you use so your figure tips don’t go raw? I use hockey stick tape on my fingers
Hell ya brother good job him and his clown shoes huh lmao🤣🤣👊 nice work bro love the info u provide.. never knew have the stuff u had to do until I watched u bro!! Yall smash the like and sub button he the real deal!!!😎
I like going 3 or 4 rows billow the ridge and going up with the ' shovel and moving left or right for like 8-10 ft then grab by hand most of the time you can get some big chunks like that depending on how many layers and how good they nailed it for 1 layer usually works good but not always the case but what ever gets the job done
to each their own. i'd like to see more ways demonstrated myself...I switch between these 4 methods and haven't found anything else that's even close to being as efficient
I want to work in construction but I have no experience in it, and I am thinking in getting in a trade school for construction. Would you recommend it?
I am wondering why the tear off with only one layer of shingles? I am contemplating doing my roof and been thinking about whether to add a 2nd layer or do a complete tear off again?
Lmao love the crew 😂😅😂
Good video man
That's one big @ss roof! Nice job there
What I do is loosen the shingles from underneath then come back rip em up like 3 taps and finish with pulling nails
Pretty satisfying to watch
Thank you
Nice....new tool holding a new tool! We are in for a video! 🍿
Thanks for the vid zack. Never seen a lift like that before. Also were you just making sure the decking was tight with the trusses when you were nailing? Also just wanted to say I appreciate the videos.
thanks hunter, always appreciate hearing from you. i was just making sure it was tight. they didn't use ringshank 8's when they installed the plywood and it was poorly nailed on top of that so most of the corners were loose and some of the seams needed sunk tight
you should try my method: (ripper) stand under the shingles, go right to left on one row as fast as you can all the way down, just giver on that row then pick up that whole row or get someone else to pick it up while you go onto the next. you pretty much get all the nails.
I do that sorta. right hand on the ripper and left picks up the two shingles and piles it about the shingles that still need ripped off.
I'd be there in a heartbeat if I could bud. Super jealous
One of my best friends owns a roofing company and the last job was a 50 square 12 pitch....tear off and shingle.10 guys on the crew started at 6:15 am and finished the job at 8:15 pm not a single crooked shingle on the roof.
That's insane! I would pay top dollar for guys like that. Look at 50 sq 12 pitch n say let's get it done in 1
I lived north of Wisconsin's Potato fields and I remember roofers used "Potato forks to pull shingles.
Great job.
Thank you
How much per square do they charge? And i think 3 or 4 bundles = 1 square
You got to tell that kid work like you live hard and fast
Some work getting done! How do you measure a roof like this? Can it be estimated from the ground or you need to walk it?
Just count the shingles
I prefer to walk it. its more accurate that way and I get a better idea if there's any bad wood and roughly how much I need. to each their own really on that one. some people pay for an eagle view. I can get them if I want through a shared account with my shingle supplier but I still get up there.
I already like the video before I start watching It
Can you do a video on how you do your valleys on both sides and how the top shingle in your valleys comes out straight
yes, I am doing that tomorrow and I've been wanting to make that video for awhile now. keep a lookout for it. make sure you hit that bell
Keep the vids coming. What brand and line of shingle would you put down on your own house if building new construction? Timberline UHDs worth the extra labor?
uhm. I'm about to put driftwood on mine. i'm undecided between o.c or landmark tho. but really i wouldn't go too fancy personally unless you got boocoo bucks and a really steep roof. otherwise, just pick one that pops. Gaf, landmark and O.C...cant go wrong in my opinion
@@NWIVeteranConstruction definately owens corning..i love the surenail strip, well all except when u gotta cut them fuckers when the shingles anything but cold..they suck ass to cut..
@@NWIVeteranConstruction u said driftwood...u should check out the color sandune...its a amazing color and relatively close to driftwood in a way..the last 7 out of 9 jobs I've done the customer went with sandune..its popular.
What is that, like 8/12? I like howyou guys just walk on that with all the loose granules and slipperiness and steepness and just make it look like nothing
You guys need to get some cougar paw boots... They are a game changer
Funny thing I'm left handed but was taught how to shingle my a right hander I shingle from left to right it even seems weird to go the other way now
Crazy that guys don’t show up for work... I don’t understand it. I just started with a New company, brought a buddy on with me. My project manager told me they are going to start firing dudes because of our dedication. They didn’t have enough help so they had to put up with lazy asses. Not anymore. lol. Thanks for the videos brother.
If the come up in sections by hand and its quicker.
Second is pitch forks. Come back and pluck the nails with the shovel.
Also ripping side ways .
My husband's an old time roofer and he used to slice the length of the roof about every 3 ft and then roll it all up into a big roll which pulls 90% of the nails and all the paper as you go and just drop the roll into the back of the truck.
With a saw? Like cutting through the shingles but not the plywood?
@@NWIVeteranConstruction no just a composition ax one with a small razor blade attached to it. One from the '60s, he still has a couple. They have wooden handles. I think they're called "Plum". The makers I suppose.?
Ps. He is also a veteran, 1 Cav.
Confused on why you never wear gloves
When is it necessary to put an ice barrier over felt? I thought it’s either one or the other. Great video, cheers..
It’s about the codes in the area you’re working, and you put ice/water up the valleys and On the overhangs till you’re past the exterior wall to whatever code is in you’re area as well as around chimneys and crickets under the flashing. You felt the rest.
Wow, that is one big job! So, did you end up getting stung or was it just debris? Keep the great videos and great work coming L
no I didn't get stung lol thanks for the concern though. I appreciate the feedback
My question is what is better as an underlay , tyvek or roofing felt . 2 question are staples ok to fasten down the felt.
My recommendation is to never use Tyvek as underlayment. it will actually leak. its meant to be installed vertically on walls. the underlayment I use is GAF felt buster. its synthetic felt and comes in a 10 square roll. I believe its approved for staple only install. if its not, I can assure it holds tight when stapled correctly and we walk 8/12s like that. HOWEVER, if you plan to leave it for a few days or there's any chance of rain, put as few tack staples as possible and use a pneumatic cap nailer for the actual install of the felt. those will not leak.
@@NWIVeteranConstruction Tyvek makes a synthetic felt
Synthetic is the shiznit
Where did you start roofing? Im 45 yrs. Old. My dad taught me everything about roofing and siding. EVERYTHING YOU SHOW ON YOUR VIDEOS IS THE SAME EXCACT GOD DAMN WAY I WAS TAUGHT. DONT BE A PANSY. MAN UP. FN AWESOME. I WISH THERE WERE MORE ROOFERS LIKE USE. (OLD SCHOOL)
Fucking awesome looking job you got there can’t believe the luck you have with the labour such a shame!! Just a friendly tip on that power ladder if your still using it ( looks identical to one I use to use) even tho it says 200 lbs or whatever it is on carriage I wouldn’t be putting any more then 2 on it. The inside track pops off very easy with top guy unloading in that exact way (pulling off one side). I’ve seen it dozens of times and seen 2 motors get crushed. Good luck and wish you were more local
Wish you where in Rhode Island I’d be there everyday working man lol
I like that ladder lift i bet my guys would like it even more lol
haha it came in handy for sure!
Another thought... It saves the guys energy for not bullshit work
The ones that look like a platypus foot work good. The Red Ripper is another one
No saftey regs?
You should check out double rippers that's all we use
The man, tells it how it is.
yes sir
Just me, but i stand in front of the shingles and let them fall to my feet, sticking as i go, and when i get maybe 3 courses from the bottom, i toss the stack, then for the bottom 3 courses i let it drop
hi there, how do you tear off a product like stormshield?
It's tough. I work it with these same tools, sideways. Usually you try to get the shingles off of it and don't bother with the ice shield itself. But sometimes you can get it off. Sometimes you just replace the wood
I myself personally loves the red rippers, only use a fork on multiple layers
i use my red ripper and stand on the shingle make nce piles 2 by two doesnt take long and much more efffective when working byself
Red rippers all we used in Helgason they work great I personally switched to grants version more arc in the metal.
I've used most of them and to me the best one is the SHINGLE PEELER! its a little heavier but faster
I'll look into it! I've trying not to act like I have the best tools or methods for everything. Until I've seen it all I don't know it all
And you should Always tear the felt paper off as you go... Slipping on loose felt paper isn't any fun
Tim Bibin I agree with that most of the time.
peel it all off at the end and get most of the messs wrapped u[ in it
@@williamcutrell7456 .. Yeah on a lower pitch.. it's funny you say that.. we did that on a job we were doing yesterday
@@williamcutrell7456 .. Another advantage of leaving the paper on is that you can see all the nails that are sticking up and need to be either pulled out or Hammered down
@@timbibin1301 yeah and if the paper is still in half decent condition and stapled down it usualy doesnt pull out
When you have to protect the gutters how do you do it?
Pound boards at the bottom to catch all the trash. I screw plywood to it as well 1 ft ripper
Whats the going rate for tear-off help?
Depends on experience and varies big between areas
Does the ice shield go on top of the felt?
No, I'ce shield goes down at the eaves and in the valleys.
Ice and water shield are supposed to be applied directly to the decking, under the underlayment. In the northern climate it is to be applied on all rake edges and eaves to help prevent ice dams and wicking. Here in the south it is mainly used in valley's and around penetrations.
Three factors that play into an easy rip
1. Common roofing nails
2. Plywood
3. Hot day.
Have all those then you can rip 10 square in 45 mins
I bet some people that read this thought you listed hot day just to be a smart ass, but you didn't, and I for one, know why you listed it 👌👌
@@timbibin1301 non roofing roofers lmao
How do you do it when run it to a roof thats been nailed over 2 or 3 timed
Multiple layers? If that's what you're referring to then you dig down to the wood and start pealing... Lotta clean up.. good luck 👍
Rip after the first roof.
Good shit bro, tear off sucks, but that one gravey ass job bud,I bang that 22sq side in a day too, just in cruise control 🤘🏻
Is there a use for old shingles? Recycle?
In NJ recycled asphalt shingles were used in road construction. We paid $25 a ton takeaway and they supplied the dumpster. Most were shipped overseas.
@@ozziestrom9793 that's pretty cool I assumed they had a purpose but never really asked or looked into it. I know my dumpster guy doesn't let me throw other stuff unrelated in my shingle dumpsters so I'm sure they're doing some kind of separating and recycling with it
Razor back slider. Best tear off fork ever made.
Depends on pitch of roof and condition of shingles…..but I found the best way is to start 4courses down from top have two guys picking up the trash and work across the roof like a typewriter moving down 4 course each time.very fast and very little trash to pick up and the shingles come up whole instead of small broken pieces.
I never knew why roofer charge so much until I got up and tried to do my roof myself. Now , it seems like a pretty fair price😅
Is their a reason you didn't get the shingles boomed up to the roof instead of dropped on the ground?
He mentioned in his last video; the brick driveway won't support the weight of the truck and boom
@@tdgdbs1 thanks for answer bud! yes the pavers were the only reason, often times tree's or power lines will prevent us getting a boom in there too. apparently the hydraulic fluid in the boom lift can cause an arc if close enough so they're not aloud to put the within 20 ft. (they usually do anyway though haha)
Plus you still have to move the shingles to tear off. We never put them on the roof. Get a shingle lift.
I’m going to have to make a video on how we strip a roof I have never seen any other roofers do it the way we do and it works really well I think it is the fastest way to do it when you include clean up
double fork, have someone carry to the dumpser and let next to nothing hit the ground? whats your method
Yes please share.
Try the Rapid Roof Remover Tool. Expensive but well worth it. Pays for its self in no time. Check it out on YT.
@@ozziestrom9793 I've seen that before. looks pretty good but i prefer the workout. and we can take it off just as fast with the double forks and have one killer follow with the nail popper.
It’s hard to explain but we have custom made stripping tools made out of ice scrapers that we bent.
Damn. This is the best damn roofer i have seen on youtube. This dude knows his roofing
Do your shingle company not have a boom truck?
Can't drive on the pavers
Next time someone’s late fire his ass off the roof👍 nice job bro.
I mean people are always gonna be late some days yo. The way my boss used to do it was whoever was late would stay down and pick up all the trash before they got up on the roof
Erick Medrano I rather pick up the trash lol
Have you ever tried the roll method?
YES! tore off 750 squares worth of apartment buildings (14 total) using that method only and we rocked them! that's usually my first choice
What u charge to tear off roof ?
We're are you I'm in Saskatchewan Canada and we have to we're P.P.E to the nines here you guys should enjoy all the freedom you have.
Zach"s the new tear-off foreman.
Is tying off not a big deal where ur from?
Fucking right brother mint demo on tear off. Those black razor back strippers work real good but they dig hard every single nail steady fetching and snatching. It def is gravely when the old felt stay in place so you can glide over it. When the hay fork comes put is when it's 2 layers of old 3 tabs and a layer of cedar shakes billions of nails..lol From one roofer to another safe journey and God bless you in the roofing industry.👍🏁
If the gutters were good and there was no soffits or nice flowers. How about nailing a tarp to the roof and drape it down to the ground and out on the grass. I've always done this, I'm from long island, but since I moved to Indiana, every one does the board method. Why?
it must be different where you live but we can have up to 3 roofs on so tear offs are hell. they make this automatic shingle eater called a shingle hog and holly is it efficient. always shows up never bitches
Where do you roof and hows the weather out there
I'm in northwest Indiana and its hot humid summers and cold winters. hit -50 in January and then we had one of the hottest week long streaks in Indiana's history in july. it was so brutal we had to start shingling at 7 and should've stopped around 1 but by 3 oclock every step you took scarred the shingles we had to leave early twice
Stand down lower so he doesnt catch you with a shovel and as the shingles coming up hold it up for him by the corner. Much faster and safer.
i just grab a ripper, get 2 or 3 courses rip in one line and stack em in seperate nice piles, to carry later, to the bin or ground drop so pack it is easier,
never ground drop a walkable roof tho
@@williamcutrell7456 What if the bin is on the side of the road or not clpse to the roof.. just throw the tare off in the attic?
"Don't rush"
My house was stapled (that is some lame ***"). You could grab a shingle, then just start a run like a zipper and practically pull an entire strip of them from bottom to top from the strip to the ridge. It was ridiculous, no idea how those shingles stayed on with the winds (hurricane) we get sometimes. I was dreading pulling that roof, and it was ridiculously easy.
I nailed five per in the architectural that is up there now...dreading stripping that roof, and its time is coming. I have one of those flat pullers, but it has wide triangular teeth. I think I might get a second one and grind slots in the tooth bases. Looked like that second wedge tool worked far better though...hell maybe I'll just grab one of those, and sell it when I'm done.
You can't stack these shingles like 3 tabs
Pitchforks seem the most fun
not to be rude to you guys but the way your ripping it is the dumbest ways possible. I use red rippers and go sideways ripping two rows at a time, putting the longer shingle on the bottom of the two. Also as you rip the shingles off piling them about you in neatish piles .if you would like to see a video of it just let me know. It would definitely help you out and make your rips faster.
Lifting up from the side disturbs alot of granules leaving more cleaning at the end I normally walk backward to the ever using a roofing spade and the bottom of the shingles lay the shingles on my toes as shuffle backwards.. this way everyone can be ripping side by side and everyone takes they're own need u disturbed piles as they go far less gutter clean up and no need for dragging tarps to the bin if your know how to hit a trailer properly
You're right, and long pants and sleeves
Man i love getting huge pieces when hand pulling
I was a legendary tare off guy, beat a 250 marine. Pulling by hand from the bottom up you get sheets.
We use to have to carry up the bundles by hand
What is the strangest thing you have found removing a old roof or roof ?
Ive found a news paper from 1922 .
And a 380 or 9mm bullet .
Or autograph from the previous roofer.
Eamon Augustine I found a dildo on a roof once. Also found and arrow lodged in a rubber roof once.
3ft black snake was under the plywood I pulled up
I've found pillows in the attic for insulation, a vintage Pepsi can from the early 60's, bullets, scorpions, billboard ads used for roof sheathing, paving stone used to replace a missing tile, a garden with flowers growing from excess bird poop, coffee cans for flashing and the homeowners underwear used to plug a leak.
Options 1 pitch fork
Op 2 pith fork
0p 3 pitch fork
We use the pitch fork on every roof
What do you pay for a dumpster?
