I like that trick where he runs three consecutive full shingles in a row to the left (and you think to yourself wtf is he doing?) ... and then he trims the upper most by 1/3 and then cuts the quarter notch from the one below it ... those cuts seems counter-intutive at first but they obviously work. That's a pretty slick trick. (And the bonus ... because they are partially nailed, no need to have one hand holding the shingle and one hand on the knife) That plus how he lays out all of his full bundles in exactly the right place making it easy to reach and transfer to the successive laddering course above is the epitome of efficient. Really impressed with how smart and quick you ran this.

I been roofer for 7 years old school style. Hammer and nails with just myself and owner doing roof repairs to 100+ square roofs in Texas year-round. Just a year ago I left that job due to a love but soon will be moving back to start my own roofing company. Watching videos like these helps me see how much different others like to roof and I take a little from each video to try and make a quick but quality job out of each one I plan on doing. Great video and keep up the great work!!!
I’m a 17 year old roofer and Im just starting to get in to nailing everyday and it’s very helpful to learn your time saving tricks because out there it’s rare for another roofer to help you or teach you something you have to learn by watching them
I really enjoy all your videos and have been learning a lot from your input and technique. I am getting ready to fully sheet and shingle the roof of our first home next month and have been taking notes! Thank you for all the information. As a tradesman myself I respect your work ethic and willingness to share from your experiences.
Amazing work. Insanely fast. I know a guy who is 61 who can roof ALMOST as fast but not quite. He has been doing it 40+ years. He refuses to use a nail gun. Hammer and nails by hand. It was amazing watching him work.
You have Economy Of Motion which means every move is forward. I'm learning a great deal of useful information from your videos. Liked and subscribed. Randy from North Alabama.
6:12 I really like how you mentioned the fact that the "polo shirt people" have their stages showing the viewers how to do it when in reality all they do is talk about it and they have the real workers behind the scenes doing the actual work while the polo shirt people rake in the benefits. You DO the actual work.
Yeah, I was cocky and fast as hell when I was your age too. Ripping off three layers in 98 degrees 99% humidity in Central Alabama. Now as and old man I wished I took things a little slower and not beat the living shit out of my body. I started in construction at 13, by 16 my brother and I would do entire homes in a day, tear off and lay. Typical 1700 SF home. We killed ourselves. Now at 60 We are stoved up and can barely move some days. Take time to be good to your body now before it's too late. All that money we made and for what? We are so beat the hell up we can barely enjoy life. It's not always about speed. Speed is only important if you want to make good money fast. That thought process after 20-30 years gets old fast. But good job young man! Keep busting your ass doing roofing. Call me in 30 years.
Ok, I think you guys are missing the fucking point. It seems I have to explain....The lesson kids is not wether I'll be around in 30 years, but to try and take care not to kill yourself while your young, I'm paying a huge price for "timing" my work when I was young and strong, in construction and in the military. See class, when you beat the living shit out of your body for 40+ years, you will pay the price and all for chasing that almighty dollar bill. I hope today's lesson is a little more clearer. And for you smartass pricks pointing out the obvious of 30 years equalling 90 that's great you can add! Call me in 30 years, is considered a descriptive future occurrence. In others words a matter of speech, it's not literal. Understand now boys and girls? Stop killing yourself, take time to work smart not hard. You'll wish you had, got it? But, what do I know, nothing. Do as you please. I know I wish I had listened to the old timers back in the day! I was cocky and thought I knew everything. I still don't know shit. I do know one thing, my broken up, arthritis and cancer ridden body hurts like a bitch every damn day now. I'll give you one guess why! But go ahead act like the badasses that you think you are and have fun with that. And you can still call me in 30 years!
I started roofing at 13 too 37 now and i feel 57 started off toting shingles up a ladder for roofers and worked first 8 years nailing with a hammer it takes a toll on ur body fact
Yup, my back started hurting just watching you carry those bundles around and bending over so much, 49 and one back surgery in the bank in 2012, I have a 2 comp and 1 wood shingle tear off and 3/4" decking replacement in a few spots on my house 22ish square. It's probably gonna kill me lol. Appreciate the videos, My parents roofed back in the 70's, would nail my pant legs down to the roof when I was 4 to keep me in one spot, that was daycare in the 70's for me lol. Course it was all 3 tab, t-locks and shakes back then in the panhandle of Oklahoma. No modern day shingle loading like these days, and no fiberglass in the shingles till later on. I still have AJC roofing hatchets from that era and the nail holders one would wear around ones neck to slide the nails out the side..
Ahhhhahaha man this is my favorite story from any comment ever on my channel. Amazing how the world's changed so much. Definitely will be nailing my son's to the roof one day! And best of luck with your reroofs
i,m always amazed with bizarre u.s.a roofs ! it looks like the country is still controlled by big oil ! in australia we lay a roof once for a lifetime of service .our terracotta or cement tiles go way past a hundred yrs & our original corrugated steel sheeted roofs from the 1800,s are still serviceable to today , direct coastal exposure is our only exception to longevity being about 60 to 70 yrs , i guess you guys just accept what your being served up , but their are long lasting alternatives for you all !
Terracotta doesn't do well in the winter. Freezing weather causes terracotta and cement tiles to crack and break that is why you only see shingle and metal roofs in the northern parts of the states.
john ryan wood will rot from moisture after 10 years or so, at least that’s what happened with my old house. And slate is more expensive than asphalt shingles
@@RaceboyYT Wood roofing lasts 35-40 yrs when installed correctly. It needs to be installed on slats so that the cedar can breathe underneath. There is a product called cedar breather that is used when you install on solid decking, If you don't install in either of these 2 methods then yes it will rot quickly. Someone who knows how to roof would never install wood shingles directly onto the decking. And yes, slate is very expensive. But stone or slate is absolutely the best roofing material. Easily lasting 150 yrs. Easy to repair, if you're a roofer. You get what you pay for in roofing material.
@@thinkingcashew6 they use slates and tiles in Denmark and they have no problems, these shingles will cost you more in the long run and to be honestly look tacky
I just started roofing and I'm still learning and I started by myself.. I'm still learning and I want to learn more.. so far I have learned a lot from this channel.. thank you
I really like your method of cut your starter strip while you go In stead of cutting ahead of time. You don't have to mess with them laying around. It seem be in your way alot. It is nicer to have someone to lay the next shingle in place while nailing them down. But you have someone that works the pace of you. Because it's really irritating when you have to wait on someone that is slow. I did roofing in the 70's and the nail gun looks the same. I really enjoyed roofing. Nice job!
I've learned a lot from this video and from the fascia video. I really appreciate being able to see the process and how someone else would approach it. Stay well.
Much more value found in your videos that in the ones with the big fat belly polo guys 😂, those are just like pure marketing and commercials, thank you
I'm a roofer too. I thought you were going slow, and you do run a nailer slow, but you have the right spirit. You don't give up. There is days of speed and other days of need. It appears to me that you did this yourself. I learned some things.
I am no roofer, but finding myself about to tackle job after watching. I appreciate the content and time to film. This episode showed me how you cut the steps for the 3rd/4th course before full shingle on your left side. Also on rt side, 19.5-24" piece and making sure to not place nail on seam. Hook blade or reg utility blade when cutting? I am also awaiting the roofing challenge for I read a lot of talk, but see no proof from those claiming to be faster.
always use a hook blade when cutting shingles! also works better than a straight blade on ice shield, and if you're using synthetic felt (which I strongly recommend) a straight blade will cut better (fresh hook blade will work just fine though) I use a dual blade for both purposes plus I like slicing open my bundles with the straight blade
Good job man, I did roofing for almost 30 years and I think in all that time I only had a handful of roofs that came off that easy, of course I seemed to get all the ones that were 3 or 4 layers. People don't realize that it's a lot harder than you make it look. I made one hell of a lot of money during my career but I'm paying for it now, all crippled up with arthritis, enjoy it while you can. Again, good job. It does my heart good to know that there are still guys out there that know how to work.
I hear you brother, I miss the carefree days of ruining our knees, backs, whatever. i loved it most of the time. I was 18 on a framing crew and I was about 45 when I remodeled my last kitchen the pain won and i'm done ha ha
Dude why our you nailing below the nail line that's why it's there so once the sun seals it there's no leaks from rusty nails years down line I'm just saying hit that tar nail line. Just how I was taught.
the actual seal down strip is on the bottom back of the shingle.. where he is nailing, nails another row across the top of the previous shingle laid.. putting 10 nails per shingle instead of 5...

I roofed one of my houses years ago. I started the tear-off using just a pry bar then someone told me about the roofing shovel so I bought one. It made the job a lot easier. BUT, I never asked anyone how to use it. I ripped the whole thing off BACKWARDS. I started at the bottom and ripped to the ridge. I did my own roof last year. Used a pitchfork to remove the old shingles, followed up with a nail remover.. Looks like a shovel would have been better.and faster. It was a hell of a learning experience considering that I did everything solo with absolutely zero help from anybody. I know now that I never want to do another roof! @oShane Kasper that is a correct statement but as a power plant worker I believe it was designed to save lives and reduce injuries for the industrial craft workers of America. This may not be applicable to the independent contractor but important nonetheless .
Genie Harris yeah... just wait when they pass by or someone snitches and then ends up with a huge fine by the end of the day.safety comes first in my company. It’s money out of my pocket
Those slopes look so nice. I've been roofing for about a month now and we were on a 12/12 the first job I was on, and now we're on a 7/12 and the shingles are old and the grannies slip out beneath your feet so we're harnessed up at all times and I haven't bought a harness with waist rings yet so I have to use 1 hand to work and the other hand to hold my rope. I know I'm getting one for Christmas, but I might have to ask for it early lol.
Thanks. First time watching a roofer and was interesting. Most important was how you staggered the shingles, dealt with the edges and the ridge (top). If you explained it while you were doing it it would have had better education. Thanks for your service and happy you’re able to make a living. Nice work!

Yeah, I was fast but our fastest guy made the nail gun sound like 1 shot , it was sick! I could get it down to 2 shots first 3 sounded like 1 but I always had a pause at the 4th. The nail gun makes all the difference, we ran Hitachi and a clone, the clone was really fast and light. Bostitch nailers are too slow and so is running that pattern clear across. we only did this when it was to hot to move a shingle by the time you got to the next row.
I meen 33 minutes for 1 side is fast. At that rate itd take about 2.5 hours for the entire roof. Meaning you a 3 man crew could do 3 roof jobs I. 1 day. A new roof is insanely exspensive.
@@jtaylor3609 it all depends on the roof. this was a pretty straight forward job. no skylights or other protrusions, no valleys, walkable 4 pitch. it shouldn't take any roofer worth his weight more than 2 hours to do it. @@lllBAMlll I agree Hitachi always seemed to be faster than the Bostich. it was also weighted and balanced a lot better. I do things a lil different. for 1 I don't like the hose on the roof I am working on. always used a lead hose then 1/4 from that to my gun and behind me. never had to worry about stepping on it and rolling my ankle. also I am a lil suspect of his nailing pattern. all you need is 1 seam to be where a nail is. all in all good job tho
I roofed houses for 25yrs. He's not fast he's very SLOW lmao. There's alot of pointers I could show him alot of tricks that would make him extra money. Plus he want have to cut the starter shingle like that. Take a normal 3tab shingle turn it upside down the you don't have cut your starter shingle. Then running up the sides hang over and inch turn your 3tabs inside house then you got 1 contentious line running up to the ridge cap

I’m a 17 year old roofer and Im just starting to get in to nailing everyday and it’s very helpful to learn your time saving tricks because out there it’s rare for another roofer to help you or teach you something you have to learn by watching them
a roofer teach you something? oh thats funny kid...... you might as well ask an ugly girl to be pretty. that's not possible.
I like how you finish the edges. Way faster than cutting them in. Happy I learned something new from this video.
I really enjoy all your videos and have been learning a lot from your input and technique. I have great respect for you for tearing that shingle up when you nailed on the side lap. Every shingle company I know of sends it

6:12 I really like how you mentioned the fact that the "polo shirt people" have their stages showing the viewers how to do it when in reality all they do is talk about it and they have the real workers behind the scenes doing the actual work while the polo shirt people rake in the benefits. You DO the actual work.

I won't dare wear a polo/ golf shirt partly for this reason.
@Roald Shakleton no, 60+30=90
If you're still alive in 30 years that would be amazing.

@@thinkingcashew6 Slate, Wood shake. Slate is good for 150 yrs.
john ryan wood will rot from moisture after 10 years or so, at least that’s what happened with my old house.

Nice job!

I am also awaiting the roofing challenge for I read a lot of talk, but see no proof from those claiming to be faster.
always use a hook blade when cutting shingles! also works better than a straight blade on ice shield, and if you're using synthetic felt (which I strongly recommend) a straight blade will cut better (fresh hook blade will work just fine though) I use a dual blade for both purposes plus I like slicing open my bundles with the straight blade
only ever laid one roof in my life, you make it look so easy. I have to say it is perfection, awesome job my friend!!
That house had a hip roof and was difficult to get the ridges straight. It's been over 25 years and that roof has never leaked. I wish UA-cam was around back then.
