- AND YOU WONDER WHY I HAVE A CHANNEL ABOUT ROOFING!!! This homeowner asked me to take a look at the poorly installed roof/soffit/fascia/ and gutters after they decided to go with a lower bid. What I found changed me. I'm not sure if I will ever be the same after seeing this. This is pure heart break to me. I cannot believe that people out there treat homeowners this way. He could've looked at the packaging or watched any video on UA-cam. The leaders of my hater herd would do a better job than this guy. .

You should make a video of the tear off I wanna see how they fastened it hahah. I bet you could tear it off in an hour.

@@BlazeWill No.. Not everyone looks for the cheapest person lol.. I work for a contracting company too and have found that the saying "You get what you pay for" is 100% true.. If someone will do a Job dirt cheap, likely its because NOBODY ELSE will hire them & they're desperate.. People have no issue paying for GOOD work.. Pros it's light so throwing it away is easy. cons it's a POS
Plus it's only one layer and new shingles.... I hated tearing double layer roofs. Old shingles are so crumbly and sometimes you need to wheel borrow/shovel it to the dumpster.... this job is a easy tear off that isnt tarred or nailed anywhere, this roof reminds me of the old staples they used during the big boom. The wind just blows em right off
I help my dad fix tons of shitty jobs people do and they ALWAYS use so many nails makes it a total nightmare to tear down to replace
Opie Taylor he high nailed it. Or else it would it stay on the roof.
Opie Taylor
It’s definitely nailed. It’s just nailed really high. This guy knows what he’s talking about, just overlooked the fact that bad roofers always nail way high. So high that you can’t see the nails by lifting up the tabs.
That usually happens when homeowners want to spend "Less", and now have to spend TWICE the price. 😂
Buy once cry once.

This is the worst overall I've seen, I've never seen it where everything a "roofer" has touched is wrong usually it's just a few areas where corners have been cut the rest of the work is to an ok standard.
I have installed about 5 squares in my life. I could do a better job than that 😂
I appreciate your take on this and respect how you didn't try to throw all new guys under the bus.
I did the same myself, I started keeping photos of my work while I was working for bigger companies and I would only take on jobs that I knew that I would do well. It payed off.
We all have to start somewhere but if were not doing some sort of apprenticeship the best way to start is by working for other professionals and learning the trades 1st.
Your customers shouldn't be paying you to learn as you go.
I did my roof with my dad, and it was my first time. Mine was a frickin masterpiece compared to this monstrosity.
Most ppl wont butcher their own house.
Contractors hold alot of contempt & disrespect for minority homeowners especially. Sone of the bad ones will do excellent work in a "preferred" area of town then come to a minority area & do crap work. I just had a 4 month old roof leak. All the vents & flashing was left open. Un nailed & unsealed. Plus some shingles were on backwards. It cost 25% of the original job just to correct. I feel like poor work is a form of disrespect to the homeowner. In my case i feel they intentionally did poor work.
@Leopold nope, minorities do the same thing. Same mexicans out there doing five star work in the suburbs come to the city and rip off the poor people.
To be fair, I don't think its a racism thing. Poor people just pay less and that saps their enthusiasm. But imo you have to have good work ethic no matter how much you're getting paid.
Good job
@Leopold I thought he ment an area that isn't normally visited.

@Man how in the hell is each and everything about the job not jus wrong but I mean not even close. Lol. Can't possibly get any worse than this for real
Not just a waste of money but a waste of materials too. Decent new shingles going right in the dumpster . In my family we put roofs on for other family members. DIY and all that. We are not pro’s. Just good family time and saves family money. But we know how to do it and go above and beyond. Just smaller uncomplicated houses/garages. So it amazes me that someone would take money and do such a crappy job. I get the impression this guy wasn’t a scam artist but just a complete idiot.

I’ve been doing fences by myself for 7 years now in Florida and Georgia. I’ve always been a perfectionist when it comes to my fences. I just recently moved to Pennsylvania and got hired by a fence company and they made me feel the same way you do looking at this roof. They don’t use a string to set posts, no string to see the flow of the top rail. On wood fences they do 6 inches over the top rail leaving a huge gap at the bottom. Their rips are terrible and sometimes too small. My boss calls it the wow factor. To us it looks like shit but the customers most of the time don’t know the difference and think the fence looks great.

You can't have even seen one shingle job and not know how to book the start. This was done by someone who had never even watched a shingle roof put on, not even one. Stagger seams is just thing one, less valleys, and, how can you pitch a gutter wrong. It's like someone did this on purpose, everything is wrong except the shingles are facing correctly.
Come on...... you don’t even need to be an apprentice to look at that roof and know it’s a shiftiest job, most normal folk with even a part of a brain could do a better job than that and still wouldn’t have the brass tacks to go on pretending to be roofer

And it happens more often than not, not just with roofers.
If you'd give me a bunch of shingles and a ladder, and no internet access and told me to do a roof that's probably what it would look like.

My landscape design and construction company takes care of a summer home for these multi-millionaire customers of ours and they turned our bid down for building a retaining wall because the waitress at the restaurant told them that her boyfriend can do the retaining wall.
Not only did it take them forever to build the wall but they didn't put any back wall bracing in with anchoring footings and the retaining wall fell over and the very expensive motorhome parked in the parking lot above the retaining wall went down the hill with the retaining wall.
They lost a half a million-dollar camper all because they chose cheap labor.
They tried to sue the guy but he doesn't have any insurance and he doesn't have a job so they really didn't end up with much of anything and their insurance would not cover it because they hired a unlicensed unskilled contractor.

I was out in business for myself till I got sick of the extra work, a good tradesman should know how to price a job, and I would be cheaper than a lot of people who would throw a figure at it, and their quality was far less... your only going to get a good trade by word of mouth from credible customers, the kind that know what they were expecting...I used to spend hours talking to clients finding out that they had no idea what they were getting and what the pros and cons were to it. Being a professional and being a tradesman are very different nowadays...
I always go with the best reviews, which is NEVER the cheapest, but also rarely the most expensive
I got my roof done for only $1500 for man power and about $1800 for material. 12/12 pitch , 2 story 1900 square feet.

At least it’s kinda ram straight. Lmao. Unreal man. No 3 step, seam over seam, no 3 tab cut for caps, no ridge vent, valleys are messed up. I bet he high nailed the shingles.
One of the things my mom always told me when hiring someone, never go with the cheapest cause they are cutting corners somewhere. And always make sure they are bonded and insured.

Serves the homeowner right for being too cheap to pay for quality...I deal with that crap all the time and then they want a deal to fix it...burns me!!!
If anything, you will have to charge them more.
The homeowner may not be cheap and may not have paid a lower rate to have the job done. The crook knows that he's dealing with an older woman who will never climb a ladder to inspect the roof and she probably wouldn't know what to look for anyways. It kinda looks like a roof from the ground so she writes the final cheque for payment. The crook is gone and his cell phone number doesn't work any longer.
It's hard to know what the right price for quality is. I got a bunch of estimates for a 24 square roof with architectural & 2 layer tear off. 2 @ $11K, 1 @ 15K, 3 @ $20K & one amazing one. The amazing one was $28K + gutters plus $8K for redeck. I don't know squat about roofing but I know if you go a step up board version over OSB, that don't cost no 8 grand. Running the numbers on Menards pricing, I don't think the materials would've exceeded 3-4K. Insurance & labor I get. $36-38K (a third of my house value in the Midwest) is crazy. I can have guys working for weeks building an addition for that. Not 4 days to do a roof. Meanwhile I watch The Build Show do Matt's roof with metal for what he claims a per square install price similar to what I paid for mine on the lower end estimate for asphalt. I did get insurance paperwork & checked licensing.

WOW, roofing involves this certain kind of knowledge of the work you need to do and sometimes you get "What We Have Here In This Video?* LOL
Everything you said was spot on!
*2nd video & I've learned a lot!!* *Thank You!*
Good inspector on this video. I am also a roof inspector in Tucson Az and we occasionally come across the same things on roofs here.
Most homeowners will leave the roof work to the licensed professionals. Then there are those homeowners that will attempt to perform a repair, sometimes using that "roofer in a can" that we've all seen on t.v. commercials where the guy will head out onto shark infested waters on a repaired boat. That stuff is just a gimmick that I have never seen work on roofs.
Then there are the homeowners that dont do their homework & hire just anyone that says, "I can do the work." Not realizing they've been taken by someone who is in it for a quick buck, has no pride, no attention to detail, full of incompetence, and real soon, more often than not, will not answer your phone calls.
The homeowners in your video learned an expensive lesson. I highly doubt they will ever collect a penny from the unlicensed installer who did the work.
With a licensed and bonded company you can look up reviews on multiple media platforms. You can check them out with the registrar of contractors.
Get a bid that explains all the work that is to be performed and if you have any further questions do follow up by contacting the roof inspector that provided your estimate, company supervisor, or the owner for further clarity.
Get more than 1 bid, I recommend 3-4. The more the merrier.
Most roof inspections are free, (see below for comments on re-inspection fees where a company is called to look over work after it has been performed by others).
Let all the roof inspectors that come out to look at your roof that you are having more inspections being performed by other roofing contractors. This alone helps against price gouging and pushes the various estimators to be honest.
Ask for pictures of what they see on the roof, making sure that these images are from your roof and not from some other roof.
If you're thinking, "Damn, this guy has trust issues," yeah, you bet I do, because I've seen both ends of the spectrum!
It's your hard earned dollars I don't want to see you loose by making what you thought was an educated decision. It does happen with some unlicensed and even with a few licensed characters.
The licensed ones you can take to court and they can be shut down if need be.
Do your homework. Roof repairs and re-roofing is not cheap. Make sure you put your roof in competent hands.
Your home is your castle and your expensive investment, leave the roof work to the pros. If you need to have the roof re-inspected by another competent roofing contractor after expensive work has been performed, a fee more than likely will be charged for a roof re-inspection where others have performed work anywhere from $50 to $200 typically. Prices can vary in your area, you may be surprised what may be found if you want peace of mind.

Been a Carpenter for over 15 years I always tell homeowners and potential clients going with the cheapest option is almost always the most expensive in the long run. Do your research and ask questions there’s usually a reason that someone is cheaper then everyone else. A good tradesmen knows their work is good, what it’s worth and values their time accordingly. "Well they offered me a 20 year warranty on workmanship" - homeowner working with a company that is 5 years old.
Who cares how old the company is, Ive landed large government housing roofing jobs based on previous work I’ve done with them in other areas. Quality’s something that crosses over no matter what you do.
This was the worst installed roof I've ever seen.
Yessir .... by far. Smh. Can't get worse than this. I mean even someone that don't know how knows better this had to be done on purpose
Well, I'm not really sure that it could be any worse
I get that money's tight, but all to save $500 on such an investment, by going with the local 'handyman'? This is a harsh lesson.
I'm a local "handyman", I don't large jobs but even I know the basics of roofing, done a few of my own, will be doing my farmhouse this summer.
This was a scammer, guy probably isn't even in town any longer.
@@msack6904I put handyman in quotes for that reason. Of course not all are like this. I'm basically saying, she barely knew this person, had no reference of his work apparently, and didn't check to see if he was insured, considering she didn't know his track record. I've worked with many handymen who i'd trust to do this job. But never anyone I barely know, especially to save only $500 on such an expensive job.
@[The] White Rabbit What's race have anything to do with this? I've worked with Mexican people who would do an amazing job and take pride. I've also worked with lazy ones. Same deal with any other race. Are you trying to say you've never met a lazy ass white worker?? Bullshit.
@James Tyler Doesn't really paint a fair picture for an entire race of people. These trades mainly deal with the ones who share a social security number between ten of them. Hop the border, make some $$$, send it home and vamanos.. In other words, you're getting Mexico's poor. Do you honestly think you'd get better results from America's poor? Highly doubtful, but we'll never know, cause apparently they aren't even applying.
@James Tyler And willing to go to another country for work. Our poor, will just vote for socialism, and eventually win.
I hope they're able to file suit!
I'm dealing with this because of a contractor Home Depot contracted.
Never allow Home Depot to offer installation! I didn't go with the cheapest, I went with the best warranty and reviews from customers. I'm beginning to think the, "customers" were faked.
This has cost Home Depot a lot of money since they've been back 5 times to fix my roof.
Thanks for this channel, guys do work like this make us contractors look bad. Home owners do research of the contractor or the people you hire!!!
That guy had some leftover paste from his son’s papier-mâché project so he didn’t want to waste it
"Buy once, cry once" - do it right the first time!
He watched that gaff commercial where they said nail not needed seriously new bonding slash tar lol
What an absolute waste of money for the poor lady
Former experience? “Arts and crafts”
Looks like four or five hangers holding up that whole run of gutter that’s good shit
I did metal standing seam for 3 years. I just did my own shingle roof and it was easy. I was looking up ridge vent shingles and found this. What a nightmare!
Most underrated part of roofing is being able to roast whoever previously done the roof.
As Professional Home Inspector, I have come across a similar installation issue on at least 4 homes in the last 3 years. I walked one roof and a 10x10 section became dislodged. I ended up surfing down the roof slope almost to the edge before I could get off of the section. Word to the wise, hire REAL professionals for your repairs and inspections. (Be willing to bet no permit was pulled on the roof in your video!)
That's crazy lmao hilarious after the fact of course. Shameful that people are doing business like that
But, of course, scammers don't pull a permit. They also only work on the days you're off.
@@NWIVeteranConstruction yeah one thing though. If I don't have to I never ever park my truck on customers driveway. Especially if I'm doing only an estimate or some kind of an iffy job walk around (which unfortunately happens quite often). And if I need to bring tools or materials I always ask. Just a nice courtesy for the owners.
What state requires a permit to do a reroof?

90 dislikes, 90 people got their roof just like this
I would be terrified to stand on that roof soon as I realize it has no nails😂
I'm an amateur when it comes to roofs. I've done a bit, but usually assisting as dumb muscle.
But in the few instances that I actually did something on my own, I opted for going to the extreme to make sure it stays on.
I got a call from someone where I build a garden shed a few years ago, they wanted to put solar panels on it, and they guy from the panels couldn't get the shingles off.
Obviously he couldnt, after I asked if they ever wanted to put solar panels on, and they said "no", I glued them on with XTac before I nailed them into place.
Make a video of you interviewing the roofer who did this
Adam Carolla did a bit of that before his Catch a Contractor show turned to crap & they started doing bad work themselves. You could see the flaws in the last season during the big reveals after "fixing" the place.
That customer deserves exactly what happened to them. If I was you I wouldn’t even bother going anymore and tell them to call the person they hired to fix their shit
These are all things you learn after installing one roof with someone who has any idea how to install a roof.
Yeah. Did my first not yo long ago and I dont think in exaggerating when I say its 10 times better
As a roofer of 8 years of experience..this hurts my soul, this roof needs a tear off right Away. Me and my crew have done roofs for years and never had any complaints. Based in texas.
The whole time I was scared you were gonna slide off because they didn’t nail any of them so I figured you would slide down off
Part of me feels bad for these people, but they got what they deserved by being cheap and wanting it now. Any good trade will always have to schedule some lead time bc they do real work.
My Uncle few years ago had me come over with My Friend who does do roofs and look at his Roof after he had a company Put new one on. As Soon as We got there, Friend was like, That Does Not Look Right at all. All this as we are going up the driveway. So Friend went up on Roof and started looking around. Well The Company Did Not use a Single Nail(Or Screws) They used Silicon Caulk.(Guessing for it to last at least the 1 year warranty they gave.) The Ridge Cap was similar to what you had Just Shingles that were cut and Caulked down.
Friend called someone and within a hour had County building inspector over to take a Look. in the End, Uncle took the company to Court, Friend and the Building inspector were there to give a report and Uncle was able to get all of his Money back and bit More. FYI this wasnt the Lowest Bid. He actually went with the One that was the 2nd to highest bid too. He had 5 Bids.
😮 wtf!.. like seriously dude wtf did I just see?..😄 very beautiful job 😆 I love it.
"Ok so instead of using nails to hold down these shingles, what we're gonna do is just light the roof on fire and the heat will stick them down. That's how the pros do it."
Hey man I can relate to that, had a customer a few years back pass up on me for a few 100 bucks. I am a drywall finisher so way less important than a roof. Needless to say the finish she got was horrible. Sometimes it pays to hire the right people.
In Florida you can be heavily fined as a residential owner for using a non-licensed roofing contractor. If your state starts fining homeowners for the use of non-licensed contractors I assure you they will dry up and blow away to another state. How the heck do they even pull a permit???
