    I just bought a GT-3 to use as a midi controller for my amp. They're still great little units. Cost much less than a dedicated controller, plus I can choose to use some of the effects of I want.

    If you use one of these with the 4-cable method and a good amp its mind blowing what you can do.

    I just picked up a mint GT-5 for 50$. I thought I would just use it as a MIDI foot controller, but after playing with it and tweaking it a bit, I am REALLY digging it! I just sounds great. I know that the ( excellent sounding) distortions/drive section is all analog but all of the effects sound really rich and full. The compressor was especially surprising...not an "over the top" style like a cs-3, more smooth like a Keeley, no joke...( I own both) . The auto-wah is right up there with a Mad Professor Snow White ( I also own) and the list goes on. The key is to use it as an effect board only with a good amp. Skip the amp and cab sims, spend a couple hours with it and you have a cheap, easy to use, HIGH quality, reliable pedal board!

      I have the gt5... I agree with most of what you say, however the auto wah sounds absolutely terrible on my gt5!!!, but very impressed by the distortions,delay, chorus and reverbs on this unit. I have a electro Harmonix worm in the loop for my phaser, vibrato, auto Wah effects. Which is a downer as I'm trying to save space, but I feel those are the weakest effects in the gt5 at the mo.

    I had a GT-5 back in the day. Interesting that you say it sounds a little better than the GT10 cos back in the day everybody claimed the gt5 didn't sound as good as buying individual pedals. Which was true with some sounds but overall it was a beast of a unit. Only issue i had with it was there was a significant delay in hitting the pedal and when the effect would kick in. However I regret ever selling it.

    • @nuthinbutlove
      @nuthinbutlove 11 місяців тому

      I still have mine and a second that I used for parts. I never had that issue with the delay when hitting pedals and I had to make some split-second sound changes. In fact at one time it was the main pedalboard for professional touring and studio players because it flowed so smoothly, was a beast, and was built like a tank so it could take the road abuse without any issues. I'm thinking maybe it was a glitch in your particular unit.
      Haven't used mine in a few years but I would definitely compare it to a few of Bosses analog pedals. It just takes awhile to tweak for perfection. The only issue I had was there was no way to lock in patches. If my cable hit the big knob on the top/front of the board it would move and change patches. I solved that by putting a fresh piece of gaffer tape over it before every gig and made sure to remove it before I left the stage so as not to leave any tape residue. It was a bit of a hassle but it worked.
      I much prefer the GT5 to the GT10. The GT5 sounded closer to analog than any board I've ever heard or played.

    Thank you for this interesting video!
    Even though I don't have first hand experience with the GT-10, I could make that case for the GT-5 in comparison to the GT-6 - and to some extent GT-Pro/GT-8.
    Playing mostly heavy stuff in a semi pro Cover Band, I try to come close to all kinds of familiar guitar sounds of many very different bands. My combination of GT-5 and a Marshall 6100LE nails it all. When Boss introduced the GT-6 ads and magazines suggested a step forward. So I bought it. But whenever I tried to emulate a certain sound, the process with the GT-5 was quick and straight forward so I was always happy with the results. When I tried to get similar results even to the ones I already had programmed on my GT-5, I never got close enough with the GT-6.
    Even sounds with little effects complexity were surprisingly difficult to dial in on the GT-6 and quick and easy on the GT-5. I don't know how to put it but the GT-6 always sounds artificial.
    My guitar buddy in our Band had a GT-Pro and never got close to my sound quality. The noise / signal ratio might be a little better on a 24 bit machine. But as long as I tweak signal in all stages of the chain, this is not really an issue for me. Another issue was the missing reverse delay, that does things in the GT-5 I could not achieve on the GT-6.

    • @gearfacts
      @gearfacts  4 роки тому

      Oh yeah the GT-5 does great things with delay and reverb. Your comments are right on, and I think the GT5 and GT6 are both great units in their own quite different ways.

    • @gearfacts
      @gearfacts  6 років тому +2

      Well the delay is excellent and the distortions are all analog, but if those are the only two things you need then I'd go for a Boss ME-8B if you can find one. Doesn't matter that it's a bass pedal, it has the best distortion I've ever heard and a good choice of delays. Still the GT-5 is regarded as a classic by many very well-informed guitarists, it won't disappoint you. Also consider the Line 6 POD XT, great distortions and absolutely exceptional delays. They're all in my other videos, Thanks for watching Gearfacts :)

      I bought a GT-5 brand new when they came out. Suggested retail on those was over a grand here in Canada. I think I picked mine up for about 800$. Built like tanks, (in Japan), analog effects... Sure, the emulators aren't as precise as todays digital copiers, but that hardly matters. If you don't mind tweaking parameters a bit, you'll have everything from sweet liquid bluesy clean tones to all-out face melting gain. Plus, you can pick one up nowadays for next to nothing. They have a bit of a following, so I'm sure if you're not happy with yours, you could easily flip it and break even.

      Gearfacts - Seems like it, if it ain’t broke why fix it some say. Modern software programs are making these things look more neanderthal. Years ago I owned a tape delay echo chamber and it was brilliant Wem Copicat it was. Then they came out with the Melos and cassette style that brought with them their own problems. Digital is easier with no moving parts but somehow lacks the warmth of the earlier tape systems. I also used to own a Fuzz Box it was place in the guitar outlet and then a cable to the amp. If memory serves me correctly the name was the Little Imp. If you can confirm that would be great, for such a little box the effect was quite good.

Though the GT-10 is definitely more "digital sounding" by itself, that USB port on the GT-10 allows me to interface with Amplitube emulation software and opens up hundreds of more sonic options (multiple amp sims, cabs, custom patches, mic selections/placements, lots more FXs, etc.) I just find some clean resident patches on the GT-10 and then tweak it with Amplitube to get the proper tone.
