Thanks for the vid. I have been using the GT-10 since 2010 and can attest to the fact that it's way too easy to get a bad sound. There's no way around it; anyone who has one of these units has to dive deep and discover the true power within. I have abandoned the FRFR set-up. These days the GT-10 goes into a 50W stereo power amp and two guitar cabs (one on each side of the stage). Probably the biggest improvement in sound quality occurred when I set the "Output Select" to Lines/Phones (instead of Stack Return) and then turned off the speaker sims in the Preamps. Once I figured out the stereo features the sound is absolutely massive.
Boss products are pretty much the only thing where I have to dig deep to find that "ideal tone". Every other product I've used was pretty much straight forward.
i am rocking the boss gt 10 and a Epiphone Marcus Henderson Signature Explorer " Apparition " you guys better belive that the GT 10 still kicks in 2023!!! thanks for the video dude!
all around solid unit ive been using them in studio and live for ten years now. big tip is do high and low cuts to dial the frequencies out of the unit that are not needed. also get an amp you like dial it to the edge of breakup and add stuff on top of that to boost it vs adding distortion unless it works well in your context of a mix. the vox ac30 like this with overdrives and boosts are great for more classic tones. metal i use the plexi the jcm 800 or the rectifier as well.
Thanks for posting a video about this unit. I own one and love it, but still have a lot to learn. I like using the tone from my amp and use the GT-10 as a stompbox, usually. I use the 4 cable method through my serial effects loop. It works quite well. This tutorial definitely helped me with getting tones for those occasions when I plug the GT-10 straight into my interface. Please post more videos for this unit if, you have any more tips. Cheers!
I'm thinking about getting one, and playing through my EVH 50 watt. Can I set it up like I would a pedalboard? Overdrive front end, chorus & delay FX loop, and noise gate X setup.
@@dantrag2890 Yeah, it's really easy to do. This page: guitargearfinder.com/guides/use-four-cable-method/ ....shows the cable set up and how to activate the Send/Receive. Anything in front of the S/R in the effects chain will go before your loop and everythign after goes through the loop, after the EVH preamp. You can even set the GT-10 to work as a group of individual stomp boxes. I have a BBE sonic maximizer in my chain, so it's a 5 cable set up. :-) GT-10 is powerful and very very affordable, second hand. Hope this helps.
How funny when I bought the Boss GT 10 that was the amp I had and then I found out about the four cable method and had a powerful sound . Love this Boss

I have a boss gt-10 such a great product, I still using use it once and awhile now cause I have a helix but what I like to do that I have been doing lately is now is keep the preamp on the cab sim off and run straight to power amp/ speaker love the sound the preamp provides thru the power amp speaker if you have a combo amp I'll go straight to the return so it will bypass all the preamp and eq from the amp and straight to the power amp and speaker just using the preamp from my boss gt10 or even the helix, juat make sure to run the output at to amp
I use the 4-cable method with a Marshall and it sounds awesome. If you do not know what that is it allows you to use your pre-amp on your real amp and then place all the effects of the Boss before and after the preamp. You can even run the noise gates before and after the Marshalls preamp and that makes it ultra clean sounding. As an amp modeler its not so good in my opinion, works but not as good as others. Your tone sounds great I must agree, but when I try to use it as a preamp it never makes me believe it. Might just be in my head. I have used these for decades and tried every different setting possible. I owned the GT-5, GT-8, GT-10 and the GT-100.
one thing i can say is to take the peavey amp dial it flat eq 12 o clock and take the eq on the board and roll low end off and high end to 6 8 or 10 k try different settings and also check the output selection and test different ones to see what fits best try to avoid eq from the amp itself and make it all contained within the boss just for a simple workflow however every amp is different and cab if the cab is pushing certain frequencies out too much then the key is finding the flattest curves to do the cab sims or disable them in the boss and only let your cab do the work and eq it to that one. it definitely takes some time to tweak and dial it in.
These are great units, but they get overlooked because newer stuff is out there. Personally, I do a high cut at I think it's either 6kHz or 6.2kHz setting and that really takes any fizziness away. Also, just try going into the effects return if that amp has one.
I tried to use the return, but the sound doesnt convince me really. So, I end up going through the normal in, I cut the low, leave some mid and high (the amp knobs), and then I chose the setting "combo return" or "JC120", that's what works for me. For some reason I found some settings really worthwile, but unfortunately none seem to sound good with my return.- There is another tip, if you use your normal input some people recommend straight not use the preamp on the gt10, and if you think properly, there is not much you are missing since preamps on gt10 are not quite good. Then there are some other tips to use the gt10, I can tell you: 1) use usb to a computer to know what your gt10 should sound like, then try to achieve it with your amp, getting it as clean as possible for gt10 to get into it. this can be difficult for beginners since you need a recording program on your pc, and probably Asio4all. 2) Using a frfr amp, or some people recommend amps for keyboard or accoustic guitar. frfr amps really got expensive since all this started, a freeman ac120 costs an eye. Dont buy plastic headrush since they are plastic, although the small headrush had good reception. 3) get the patch available on youtube that tells you if your guitar is clipping, then go to the settings and configure the input so that the light doesnt turn on (when you get the patch youll know what I mean), 4) in the same setting leave presence to half (default) in case you gave it more than that, somebody said that is bad in gt10. Also check if your gt10 is configured to receive single coils or humbuckers, you might have humbuckers and your gt10 might be configured single coil since forever. 5) keep guitar volume and tone full up, or almost full up. 6) have good cables. 7) dont use 4 cables method if you dont know how chain opperates, first because modulators go in the end after almost everything, after the preamp and distortions, it is not a matter of using 4 cables only, S/R must be in the correct place in the chain and must be turned on to work. Dont use 4 cables method if you dont use your amp dirty channel because it is pointless, and dont use it if you dont have excellent cables since 2 cables make noise, 4 cables make more noise. 8) check your gt patches volumes, since some people make them too loud, all patches should sound more or less the same volume. Also, in case there is a loud patch you have 2 options: lowering the master volume (each patch has got one), or lower the distortion or preamp volume, or both.
9) learn about the effects and which ones should go first and which ones should go in the end. There is a logic to that, more precisely FX1 and FX2 available in gt10 might be confusing since you will tend to leave them in their place when you create a patch, if you are a noob bad news is that you are making a mistake. So the solution is moving effects in the chain to see where they can be fit, for example Pick up simulators, sitar simulator, synth, should go at the beginning (as recommended), and modulators like univibe, tremolos, vibrato, phaser, all modulators should go right before the delay/reverb. Learning about the logic of how a guitar sound is constructed is the best you can do for gt10. I should do a video about all this..
@@theorncampbell4432 I am not sure of this, I think it is right, but I have to check because there are some things that cannot be touched, for example in USB mode the gt10 general volume doesn't work, you just have a set volume. Then the pedal volume does work, and the patch volume does work also.

There is no mic gain, but I have a Sonic maximizer in the loop, so I can see clipping as it exits the GT-10. I adjust the levels in each patch before they get ot the DAW. I seldom use global volume in the GT-10. I get more control using patch parameters to achieve unity gain.
Hi, thanks for sharing. I have a question, play clean Rhythm, and I plug my gt10 straight to PA system on stage where I work. But when switch to a distortion or overdrive tone to play some solos, the sound becomes extremely loud and with a lot of humming feedback, and when I lower the volume, it loses the distortion/ overdrive feeling. I cannot get that nice solo sound. please advise 🙏 On what volume should be the guitar knob? Should I adjust the guitar knob volume or keep it at certain level? And what volume should be the gt10 patch ....etc thanks
Each patch should have a preamp setting where you can adjust the volume so you can set which patch would be louder or softer than the others. As far as feedback goes turn the gain settings down a little and turn up the noise gate.
Hi i know this is an old video but maybe someone on here can help me. I have been trying to throw this thing into a tascam 32 track recorder and the issue i am having is that the sound i hear is not the sound that comes out. Apparently in the manual it says that the headphone jack compensates like if it were playing through speakers. I even went as far as using the headphone jack to connect directly to the soundboard but it still doesn't quite sound the same. I am starting to think that the soundboard is changing the sound. Have you ever encountered this while recording and how did you fix it?
I sold my GT-8 but what's needed is people with a good metal tone, to upload videos showing people the settings they have. Obviously with any genre, but nobody does that for some reason. I've found videos with Metallica sounds, but the uploader didn't show his settings.

You should run any pedalboard on the effects loop of the amp and not in the front.
You're basically using pre amp simulators over another pre amp.

Yes I’m familiar with the 4 cable method. My goal every time is to minimizing set up. Two cables for me and that’s it.

Also, make sure that the output is set to "Line" only when using usb method.

What leyvel do you use the general output? 30% ?
I feel like my amp will blow if I even approach 50% main output on the GT 10. My amp vol. at 2 and GT 10 at 25% - 30% is still very loud for me.

Try going into settings and change it from instrument to line.
It's under the output level know. Little button called output select.
