ABANDONED Chevelle Will It RUN AND DRIVE 600 Miles Home?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 кві 2020
- I bought this Chevrolet Chevelle site unseen and attempt to drive it 600+ miles home after being off the road for 30 years. After selling my 1970 and 1971 Chevelle's the past few months, well I just needed another one. They're not as popular right now as the Challenger, Charger, Mustang, or apparently even the Opel GT. But, I really like the history of the car. The body lines, style, and room. So, I bought this abandoned 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu with no title, site unseen that was just left to rot. The car is trashed, worse than stated in the ad, and certainly not roadworthy when I show up. From what I can tell it hasn't been on the road for 30 years. But, that doesn't stop me from attempting a 600-mile drive back home. Think it will start? Or better yet, think it will actually run good enough to drive itself from the grave? Watch and find out! PLEASE LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE! There are plenty more revivals coming this summer!

So I’ve very recently got hooked on a guy’s channel and I’ve come to the obvious conclusion that what we are all witnessing is literally a genius level master mechanic at work. I just can’t help but to be impressed that a guy can take a vehicle that most normal folks wouldn’t even consider attempting to get to running again and before you know it he’s off on a 600 mile ride home with the thing. Also to top it off he has managed to invent an entirely new dialect of the English language.
That's why it's good to have a mechanic friend. We are passionate about cars, and getting dirty fixing cars is the equivalent of making love to someone you love. Sure it ain't always fun and sometimes you might not feel like doing it but you never regret it.
Well said
"..and that's fine.."
These fellers on the tubes are better than the 100% "master techs"
New dialect??? You never heard anyone speak this way?
My husband sent that carb! He's SUPER STOKED it went on the INDEPENDANCE CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!
awesome! Tell him THANK YOU again!
Dang nice of a guy to sent some good parts to another guy. Heroes don't always wear capes. I heard that somewhere.
Nice fella!! 10 thumbs up
Well thank God he sent it's the only part that gave him a chance lol much respect to your hubby lol from one car guy to another thanks for helping him out
That was awesome tell hubby thanks from a fan in Tennessee
Dippers! I love this guys laidback attitude and corny dad phrases. He lets us believe he’s clueless but secretly he’s an expert auto whisperer .
Third video into this guy, and I’m so addicted it’s almost unfair. Multiple layers of awesome hilarity and I find myself half-hazardly learning things in between crying my eyes out from laughter. This man is a genius.
I Am always Sparkolating!
As I am German, my english not that good. So I tuned in here to learn some technical terms.
I got so far: "Power barn", "Sparkelator", "Fire Hose", "Lightning Whirler", "Needle-n-Float-Adjuster" ...
I am learning a lot of valuable stuff here.
learnin up the right way! Thanks for joinin
Don’t forget to say “I don’t knoooow.”

Doing just fine sir.
They only made so many old cars, and if people don't start fixing basket cases, we'll run out. Save them all.
Now that people are loosing their jobs or have lost their jobs due to this virus crap . They've been dumping project cars some as parts cars and some that need some work . I mean cheap. They went from Barrett Jackson price to somewhat affordable. But yes some are in the scrap yards and local pick n pulls.
wrecker Jonny I just scooped a 80% finished restoration project on a 63 Falcon for 5000 Canadian pesos, fully rotisserie job and everything, a month ago it would have been listed for 10k
This is great advice and i include the funny little forign cars to , you know , the ones we used to laugh at because they weren't a GTO or Chevell or Camaro or some other work of art made of muscle . i have an 87 Honda civic station wagon. They called it a wagovan , i call it puddles simply because its my little puddle jumper but its still a sweet little car and i am going to be driving it from Oregon tto international falls Minnesota in almost true Derek fashion , im gonna do the rite thing and make sure the oil gets changed and most of the other fluids checked. Then baby it home
David Griffith David, you should go look at the UA-cam channel Boosted Boiz. The youngsters build and tune hot rod Honda’s including and old 80s wagovan! The thing is all wheel drive and about 700 horsepower out of a 2.4 liter Honda engine!
we agree, 100%. The whole reason this channel was started and is alive!
How could Derek have known what an absolute icon this car would become, or that it would be as universally loved like it is? It's fitting that a clapped out, severely weight reduced, CHEVELLE of all things that was SO rough it really had no business being saved would strike a nerve with SO many people the way it has, including Derek? While the Independence does have a great history and arguably the coolest paint job EVER, there has to be something more to this car that is the reason why SO many of us feel emotionally attached to this car. Thank you for saving SO many old cars over the years Derek, especially THIS car. What's left of this Chevelle needs to exist forever.
😊😊😊😢p
In my neck of the woods this cars actually in good condition for the age
It’s very rare that you get to witness the birth of a legend. I am just floored that you gave us the opportunity to witness it. As funny as this was I’ll tell you this. No other iconic car screams “‘Merica!” More than this one. Thank you Derek for letting us tag along on this journey.

After many years, this is still one of your best. And the birth of a legend. Thanks.
This guy's videos are pretty much the only ones I watch full length because every minute is pure comedy gold. It's got a red green vibe with a splash of crazy. Love it.
I appreciate that he actually got out at the end, opened the garage, and set up the camera just to catch him pulling in. I know he must have been exhausted. thumbs up for respect my dude
Heck yeah, such a small detail, but really sets this gentleman apart from the rest

@@kingdiamondbanger Yes, me too, and he pulled over a mile away from home for an update. A lot of work alone in just the video camera setup and editing, and he uses a professional lavalier microphone for great audio.
Maybe his wife Jessica set it up for him
Guy's got real dedication
Love rewatching this video favorite quote is “Everyone’s got there special tools in their toolbox but if you don’t got 10 feet of fuel line you need to do a self evaluation in life” 😂
I take a whole bucket of fuel lines and vacuum hoses, with plenty of clamps and zip ties. @ gas cans and a new battery and at least one drain pan. I never change the plugs unless I need to clean them. always check the brake and all the fluid levels. I'd used the air filter rig in the trunk with a new filter. Was nicee the fuel tank wasn't too badly gummed up.

When a fellas really stressed out from a hard day at work I have over 300 channels at my disposal i find myself always turning to UA-cam and watching your show. In today's crazy world you're the only program on that a guy or gal could sit down and watch with Jesus and not be ashamed. PS thank you Derek and family for all your hard work
I love seeing the origin of the independence chevelle. I’ve watched this a bunch of times, and it’s still great every time!!
Try it through some sort of av system or ln my case I did a Bluetooth link through my trucks Bluetooth radio. This one, like the beast 80s drag chevelle. They literally vibrate the cab and mirrors 😂

Wow, thanks man!
Vice Grip Garage No thank you for making me laugh my ass off, and saving the Chevelles that have seen better days! You are a modern Red Green show.

Dude oozes sarcasm
Hard to tell when he is sarcastic, but funny
When I was watching this my girlfriend saw a few minutes of it and ask's" does this guy know what he is doing?" All I could say was....I don know!! lol.

Not only knows he's an expert
My wife asked the same thing.. It's all part of the "act", which we really like. Very entertaining

Well I'll be dipped! We're French can'ehdians so she doesn't understand the guy. I know for sure that she hearing me laughin'
So when a guy was putting oil in this Chevelle and slammed the foil cap, on the oil container, into the hood latch post to open it I literally slapped myself in the forehead. You are a genius sir. I called my wife into the mancave and mansplained your genius to her while replaying the video for her.
The fact he puts himself in these positions with like 1 vice grip is incredible

I am so glad to see that you kept the patriotic paint scheme and the work you have done on this car is amazing. I love your channel and I've learned a lot from you. Thank you for sharing.

I started doin' that two episodes in, but I'm bad for that. Been living all over the world for 61 years, so I catch accents within hours. I love the country folk way of speaking from the heart tho.

I just watched this episode *again* after watching the final burnout at the freedom factory. Great circle closure. Round as a flat dry rotted cracked tire, but you brought it full circle - just like the donughts in the burnout pit there. Wow! Merrillville, Indiana. Right next to my home town which is far nicer than Merrillville. I probably would have asked you why you would bother with that car like the others. I love old stuff but I like it to be in a little bit better condition than this heap. LOL
This is my favorite UA-cam channel. I rarely have the patience to sit through an entire hour long video but cannot stop watching from the trunk exploration to the triumphant sign off in his home garage. Very nice.
Just rewatching this episode, for like the 20th time, right now. Love how you saved this car from the crusher and really made it into something extra special. It’s a shame that she keeps getting beat up in competition, but she would have been scrap by now anyway. Hopefully if she gets too beat up she can get like a 50% resto, just to keep her on the road.

I sat down this Christmas to watch it with him cause he wanted me to laugh with him while he watched an episode. Long short, I ended up watching a lot of episodes since I have been in town. I've been able to enjoy cars with my dad for once and actually find what you do interesting as a project and your sense of humor. You were made for this. Thanks mate, repairing cars and families.
You are a legend Derek..!! as well as a very patient and funny dude.! Regards from downunder Australia
Now that Independence is finished, I thought I’d come right back around to where it all started. It is great to see the car that this became and the community it brought together. Thank you Derek.
A project is never finished, bud
“Drier than Betty whites back” 😂 I have no words 😶
I can think of the word he chose to avoid when he said 'back'.
my coffee expertly ejected from my nose and mouth when i heard that..haha
A guy just had to stop the vidya right there to see if any one else thought that was just 98.4% on the laughter scale. I am just gonna start the vidya again and pretend i didn't see it.
Rewatching this to recenter my "will it run " vibe ,I've watched a hundred car guys and nobody does it like Derrick ,the comedy with know how 👌
It's so good to come back and watch this one again 3 years later and see how it all started for what would become one of VGG's most famous cars. Little did Derek know how special this thing would become over time to everybody! A fella might have to go through and rewatch a bunch more.
Not only is this man a god among men when it comes to cars but his jokes are also on point. I OWED a sub for this
He is, VERY entertaining!!!
@steve cork no one forcing you to watch....
@steve cork your attempts to troll are kinda sad. At least form a cohesive sentence lol
No man is a GOD
@steve cork why don't you just go play with the rest of the kids at the playground
That car deserves to live. Just something about the old girl. I mean she brought you home...
Yep the "Hey you, I got you back hear, the least you can do is try to fix me"
Im with these guys; that ole girl hauled you 600 miles with no breakdowns, even if her tongue was hanging out by the end.
I say fix the frame, see if you can get the engine running better, then throw a back seat in her and make some memories
I hear what you're saying for sure!
@@ViceGripGarage :O I'm....slightly surprised that a channel owner responded to a comment thread i was in :D
Seriously though, the body on that seems rotten where all Chevelle's go, so if it were me in your shoes/boots, I would do just what i said: fix the frame, see if you can revive the old 350, replace the back seat so you can bring friends/keep the exhaust out, and just make some memories. Heck i wouldn't even repaint it, its got a character all its own just for making that trip home
Sounded like old "Christine" pulling into the garage. With a little love, she'll fix herself !!
He is well spoken when not in character. I love this channel. Addictive.
This guy...I just like him. I appreciate his sense of humor and the fact is that he makes me optimistic.
