What Thermite is and How to Make it

  • I show how to make thermite using aluminum powder and iron oxide. Thermite is a pyrotechnic composition usually consisting of metal powder and a metal oxide. It creates extremely high temperatures in a very small area for a short period. With aluminum/iron oxide thermite the temperatures are as high as 4500 degrees F. Thermite is used for welding, metal cutting/boring, field-expedient metal repairs, science demonstrations, high-temperature ignition, disabling military equipment, and other applications.
    Materials used:
    - Aluminum Powder: amzn.to/3Uv4sJz
    - Red Iron Oxide Powder: amzn.to/3UAtSWr
    - Magnesium Ribbon: amzn.to/3W9MPAm
    - Precision Scale: amzn.to/3Uy8GA5
    - Flower Pot: amzn.to/3Wh8vL4

The basic thermite recipe for iron oxide and aluminum is 3 parts iron oxide to 1 part aluminum powder. You can modify the ratios to find what works best for you, this may take some experimentation. To make a 4 ounce batch of thermite, weigh out 3 ounces of iron oxide. Then weigh out 1 ounce of aluminum powder. Dump them into a sealable container, and put the top on. Shake them until the color is consistent throughout. Having the correct balance of fuel and oxidizer is key to having a stable burn in a thermite reaction. The finer the ingredients and the better they are mixed the easier it will be to ignite, and the faster the reaction will be.

Disclaimer: Take all of the proper safety precautions before attempting to make thermite. Burning thermite can spatter molten iron a long way from the burning pile. Do not stand close to the mix when it is igniting or burning. And make sure there is nothing nearby that can catch fire. You cannot extinguish a thermite fire with water or a fire extinguisher because it has its own oxygen and you need to cool it to the point where it stops burning otherwise it will keep burning. You could hit it or move it to remove the thermite that hasn't started burning yet from the burning thermite but this would only reduce the burn not put it out. Lowering the surrounding temperature with the addition of an appropriate quantity of Liquid nitrogen can easily quench a reaction. www.skylighter.com/fireworks/h...
How to Make Iron Oxide Powder ( • How to Make Iron Oxide... )
    Ratios:
    - #1 [3:1] 3 Parts iron oxide, 1 part aluminum powder. (3 grams iron oxide + 1 gram aluminum powder = 4 grams or thermite)
    - #2 [3:2] 3 Parts iron oxide, 2 part aluminum powder, and 2 parts plaster or Paris. (Mix the 3:2 with 2 parts plaster of Paris.)
    - #3 [8:3] 8 Parts iron oxide, 3 parts aluminum powder.

Actually, you could cover C4 with ignited thermite and it wouldn't do anything but burn. In order to actually explode, C4 needs an initial shockwave from a detonator shoved into it, or another explosive near it.

I used to make for fun raw thermite....when I was 14 a friend bright me some Titanium shavings to mix with my therm....And I had a chance to aquire some magnesium shavings also....I found a spot in my neighborhood where it was bare ground we made a wooden sandbox about 4'x4' and about 6" deep...we put the mixture together in a brick pipe using a sparkler we lit it and ran like hell!! The reaction was brilliant like the Sun as it sparked everywhere like a runaway flash bomb when sparks jumping around 6-7' into the air we we moved even farther away as even the wooden sandbox caught fire and was burning violently...Later when everything cooled down and Neighborhood Fireman saw our experiment...we had turned a good portion of the sand from the box into a glassy material... He figured that the Titanium shavings made it real violent and that was my last time I made thermo....

Heating up something isn't enough to cut trough it, you'd need to melt the thing... And objects have thermal inertia. A simple flower pot can somewhat hold a thermite mix even tho it cracks, but then a piece of steel will tank the reaction without much damage

I spent all 400 grams of thermite and the pipe was still strong enough to bend. Then I heated iron oxide in oven to make it dry. Then I was able to cut a pipe with 200 grams of thermite. Everyone is on a meta data list. Set off the correct sequence of flags and big brother needs to at least take a peek, as they should. I assume thermite in experiment quantities are low on the peek list. Show intent to do harm and your experiments to find a better way for humanity will end in cell time. A terrorist would need truckloads of thermite to do little harm at a high price tag. Anyone who can read, can do more harm with household chemicals. What’s your plan for thermite? Do you think it possible transport enough to do harm to an armored vehicle/contents, then even get close to such an armament? Thermite is a tool or a toy, only that. If you can purchase a thermite kit online from pyrotechnics dealers, it’s not a threat. Trying to make up some wild conspiracy about thermite is a fools errand. Better stick with beer is dangerous and kills every day!

You can burn through a car block engine but it’s risky when it comes to safes.

Don't make magnesium powder or tear it in little pieces, magnesium ingites itself with the oxygen and moisture if cut in little pieces, to store magnesium safely chemists puts it under Petroleum ether for preventing autoignition with air
WARNING don't expose magnesium to water or high humidity places it will autoignite or worst explode, you does'n want a metal fire in youre garage because you can't put it out with normal household fire equipment (fucking bucket of water)
Don't mess with magnesium, inform youreself before buying it BE SAFE
Sorry for my bad english tho

Starting the thermite with the blow torch is cheating. I wanted to see if the magnesium could start it burning.
