Only just heard this 😔. At least we got to see him and his former bandmates reunite around 2010/2012. To this day, I feel that Ultravox are underrated. RIP.
I moved to the US recently at the age of 57, and I was playing an Ultravox mix in the car. My US friend (same age) had never heard of them and after three tracks including Hymn) said "WHat band is this? They are AMAZING". It shows that good music is forever.
As an American, I only heard this song because it would occasional play on the '80s hits station on Sirius XM when I worked in a small tech shop around 2012. I don't remember ever hearing it growing up in the '80s or '90s, but once I heard it a few times at work, I became obsessed. Now it's probably my favorite song from the 1980s.
My dad (born 1970) showed me this music video when I was 10 year old. I was so intrigued by the message, the whole “making a deal with the devil” it made me go through a spiral of emotions. I’m 15 now, and still love Ultravox, dad and I still listen together. Now I joke to my friends That my mental age is 50. Thanks dad for getting me into your music !
Born in 1970 have to say the 80s best times of my life. No school on a sat up in the auld Jim jams tv and brekkie no mobile phones and laptop crap. Anyone a time machine would definitely go back.
We flew to London (we're from Canada) to see what is likely to remain Ultravox's last live performance: November 30, 2013. 'Hymn' brought me to tears (as it's doing now). I waited 33 years for the chance to see them live. It was only nine songs, and I didn't get a single picture, but I'll never forget experiencing Hymn live.
I've seen midge sing this 3 times and I nearly cry out of happiness,,if that makes sense,, rewind concerts over here are brilliant,,you need to come over,,25 great groups all weekend 😊🙂👌🍺🍺🍾
This feels like such an underrated song that should be a classic. I'm sure it was pretty successful at the time (same as other Ultravox songs), but you don't hear it mentioned or played these days, despite it being so powerful and anthemic. You only ever hear 'Vienna' or (occasionally) 'Dancing with Tears in my Eyes.' So many bands are treated like one- or two-hit wonders when they had so many good songs.
Perhaps because the words remind the general public of the Lord's prayer. Yours is The Kingdom, power and glory. In this even more secular age there are forces which hate the teachings of Jesus and any song which highlights His Kingdom is to be discarded.
Born in 71, this was the first Ultravox song I ever heard and I fell in love with their sound almost immediately. Still in love after all these years and a strong metal phase in between.
My mum suddenly passed away a few months ago...worst pain I have ever experienced.....this song reminds me of long gone happier days and the wonderful time in the 80s I had....I enjoyed them at the time...but even more so now looking back
Good news, big celebration this birthday Susan! Was real music through the years, played by real folk, with real instruments, and real producers/mixers, relating real stories, so real people could have a little real fun!!! Sounds of reality straight from the soul. Good luck Susan x.
Not a coincidence, that you hear this song now in this crazy time. I don't know why, but today i heard this melody in my head. And that's crazy too, because the last time i heard this song was many years ago😅
Those Synths take me back to the 1980-82 era.Music sounded so much better then, with true meaning.I love the way Ultravox always included a dramatic synth/piano solo in their masterpieces.Epic!
I forget if its true or not but ... I seem to recall BBC TV only showed this ONCE - as religious folk complained it showed Daemonic dealings. Which it does, but it also shows that... you sign the Contract, and you DON'T get away with it. The contracts are drawn up in the place all the lawyers go to, what do you expect ?
This was (& still is) hypnotizing to me as a young wild & free teenage girl here in New Zealand. Midge Ure's voice is Mesmerizing & took me away to places beyond! Beautiful Escapes! Deep Memories! I Will Love Ultravox Always! ♥️✝️♥️
This song is immaculate perfection by a band that brung so many many memories for me growing up in the 1980s. Today as I live my life without my mum it still brings me to tears.

Not infra, intra, supra, but ULTRA! My son playing them loud in his bedroom. Wld shout up the stairs "What's that, love it". He's now 54 yrs of age. I'm 82. Liverpool UK 🕊️
Criminally underrated song. I first heard it in 1998(16 years after its release) and it stuck with me ever since: the deep internal conflict about wanting to believe but not having the evidence to convince oneself that God is real("faithless in faith, we must behold the things we see!"). Ultravox's lyrics are some of the deepest and most profound...and most cryptic of all bands.
Your comment about wanting to believe in the existence of God questioning it's reality. You are not alone, but I just wanted to say that it is all true. It is the devil that is raising that question as it's most successful strategy calling it "a fairytale" and that it itself isn't real. You see the reason it does that is so you drop your defenses against it giving it cart blanche to step in and control your every thought, action. In order to stop it, you have to side with God, asking (pleading with Him to come into your heart a nd take over putting all your faith in Him that He has your best interest in mind a d that you love Him and to forgive you for your past transgressions. You see it's all about where we end up after this life is completed. The are only 2 choices, either in Heaven (Paradise) for Eternity, or The Lake of Fire (what's known as the 2nd death) as the former hell has been ended as all who were there escaped (why everything is so evil now here). There is no fence sitting, it's one or the other. I implore you to select the former. Hope that helps! 😇✝️
so what does Hymn mean, is it a nod to religion, a warning, what, because the fact that he includes some of the Lords prayer must mean its good. Its really soul lifting should it be? @@lambjab9832
I'm only 20 years old, but thanks to my parents I discovered this masterpiece. Sadly such music does not get as much love as it deserves in my generation.
I'm 22 and kinda feel a similar way about newer music. I listen to a wide variety of music from the 60's to now, and find the only good music from the last decade is mostly non-mainstream stuff, but it still doesn't come close to music like this. I was up late last night watching Rage (an Australian music video show), where they played this, some of their other songs, and an old interview with Chris Cross, likely due to his death last week.
Ultravox, Hymn, is absolutely on my top 5 favorite eighties songs. My first Ultravox album purchased was Quartet and I listened to it more times than I can remember. Their sound is mesmerizing as it seems to sing to your soul.

Heard this song a few days ago on the radio. Loved it instantly but I couldn't remember the title or any lyrics. Have spend the last hour looking for it and finally found it!
Right in our faces in the 1980's in this video and words....how many got it then. How many understand it now? The bands that know the truth tried to tell us.
Arguably the strongest music video that Ultravox released. I remember (pun intended) watching this when it was released and feeling an emotional response, watching it now and understanding the underlying message. Really shows the emotion that music and video can produce !
@@dn3794 Took me a moment and a couple of re-reads. But glad to say I got it before looking at the replies. Still, quite subtle and worthy of the Ultravox mental environment.
A memorable one for me. This hadn't been released and hadn't been played in public at all. No airplay. Nothing. They tagged a extra charity gig onto the end of their tour and played in the Dominion Tottenham Court Road. When they played this they announced we were the first members of the public to hear the record. What an honour to be one of the first 1500 people on the planet to hear this great track.
Same here and thank god or who ever is up there that i had Chance and the possibility to live and crlebrate the best decade in real Harmonie heard made music thanx to the Olymp of Sound an beat rythum and melodies
How many have sold their souls for the oh so brief fleeting comforts and shallow victories in this existence at the expense of the millions, and the innocent around them.
I wanted to model myself on Midge when I was in my early 20s he was super cool, still one of my musical heroes.loved the pencil moustache. The difference is I'm 6'4 Midge is what 5'7 slight Vienna they looked cool in their Long costs, the video was filmed in Covent Garden and other locations throughout London, I believe they only filmed in Vienna for 1 day because of costs.
Tomorrow, it will be one year since I lost my mother....and the biggest thing she infected into my head music wise that would not get out of my head was the chorus to this song.... Only 52 when she passed away and this song goes through my head a lot because of her..... 😢 She had great taste in music....
sorry for your loss, 6 months also since I lost my Mother, she was 89, she loved music, she loved kids, she ran discos, the 80s where my generation of youth and fun, my brother was our DJ, I have never heard this before. Raised a Catholic, recently losing my faith after all she went through. Your Mum was very young, thinking of you
@@destinycole Thank you, and I am sorry to hear about the loss of your mother too, music can be so powerful and impressionable, I took after my mum quite a bit in that regard... In terms of likes and such.... And she was very young.... But life has ways of helping people destroy themselves....and for the longest time due to how my childhood was (and I wish I hadn't been the way I was) I put too much trust and faith into mum... And was blinded for too long and by the time I knew things it was too late in the long run...and I didn't know how to approach things either due to something else that happened when I was younger so I have to carry my fair share of guilt there too I wish I could say things have gotten easier, but well my mother wasn't the only thing I lost.... The following 9 months I lost pretty much what I classed as the rest of my direct family, but I'm still standing somehow, and I know I probably wouldn't be without the support of others.... I hope you have as much support as possible through friends and family and you take each day one day at a time, put yourself first when you need to.
One of my absolute favorite songs, not only of the 80s, but of all time. I just turned 12 when it was released, and I still love it to this day. Best regards from Germany ♥♥♥

Over 39 years later.. This is more apt & stunning than ever! *Total Goosebumps 2022* Awesome!! ☝❤🎶
Midge has one of the most underrated voices ever ultravox are one of the best bands to come out of the 80s
Why underrated? He' s voice is for ever in the story of 🎶 music.
Very underated song from the 80s,,, should easily of been a No1 ,,a classic ,what a voice
this is their most underrated song
Die Energie, die dieses Lied verströmt, geht durch den ganzen Körper 🌟
One od the best songs of the 80's!!! Loved Ultravox
One of the best 80s songs and my favorite ultravox song.
40 years ago, what a great time.
Selling the soul
Heard this song a few days ago on the radio. Loved it instantly but I couldn't remember the title or any lyrics. Have spend the last hour looking for it and finally found it!
Right in our faces in the 1980's in this video and words....how many got it then. How many understand it now? The bands that know the truth tried to tell us.
It's wild this video seems to predict now common public ideas about the price of easy fame and fortune.
@@tdirtyatl Note the chequered floor. It's symbolic. You would see it at the Queen's funeral.
Um, 'deals with the devil' are not a new theme
The antichrist and his coming kingdom 😢
In my element love Ultravox.
I drove my parents nuts playing Ultravox 🤗
I remember when ultravox released this song in November 1982
I turned 4 years old in the summer of '82
Great tune from Ultravox 🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶
Wonderful song
People allways overthink...these were the best days of my life....outstanding and a pleasure to revisit my youth once again...enjoy as much as I do
It's a good quality to stop things becoming out of control
Nostalgia can be as addictive as any drug
tis is one of my best songs ever...top 5 from 70s till now ! GREAT AND TX
I love everything Ultravox does, they feel like The Human League meets Roxy Music
I hear OMD too. :)
But let's be real, they emerged the same time. See the "Synth Britannia" docu.
@@MinekEzQM ?
The thing about ultravox is they brung us music that not even todays so called music can surpass
I agree with you. Greetings from Spain 🧡
@@miguelgaldonmoragues Hello! i'm going to Madrid for spring break! what should I see?
Evocative song and fantastic video - hard to believe it was Nov 1982! They certainly dont make em like they used to.
So AHEAD of its time!!!!!!!
I'm 61 years old ,Just out plombs years ,unliked time, this Song give me a new smack life
Arguably the strongest music video that Ultravox released. I remember (pun intended) watching this when it was released and feeling an emotional response, watching it now and understanding the underlying message. Really shows the emotion that music and video can produce !
Me too, this still gives me goose bumps!
...."Pun intended"?
There is no pun in it?
@@RubberyCat Bit of an in-joke. I remember (death in the afternoon) is an incredibly popular Ultravox track.
@@dn3794
Hm, ok.
@@dn3794 Took me a moment and a couple of re-reads. But glad to say I got it before looking at the replies. Still, quite subtle and worthy of the Ultravox mental environment.
ultravox is a treasure and this is song is a masterpiece to music, art, and film
The masterpiece of Ultravox, i was only 11 years... And but this is Wonderfull!!!!
Love how the tempo & volume ups at the beginning.
Great track 😍
A memorable one for me. This hadn't been released and hadn't been played in public at all. No airplay. Nothing. They tagged a extra charity gig onto the end of their tour and played in the Dominion Tottenham Court Road. When they played this they announced we were the first members of the public to hear the record. What an honour to be one of the first 1500 people on the planet to hear this great track.
ONE OF THE BEST 80S SONGS EVER!
Grateful that this time was my youth - best time of my life.
This was a huge hit for ultravox in late '82
Ultravox were a great band in the 80s
Midge ure had such a powerful voice
Brilliant. I am transported back, just listening to it again. Love it!
Saw them live in London last night - was epic 👍😬
Still one of my favourite songs.
Such 80s, such style, such epic
Пожалуй лучший альбом Ultravox)))
Midge Ure I had the biggest crush ever! That voice......
Such a shame they're mainly only remembered for 'Vienna', this is fabulous.
To be fair. Vienna was also an amazing song.
It is, got played to death over the years though, which can get annoying for a song like that.
I love Ultravox! Foxx era and Ure era.
Dancing with tears in my eyes
And was blinded for too long and by the time I knew things it was too late in the long run...and I didn't know how to approach things either due to something else that happened when I was younger so I have to carry my fair share of guilt there too
I wish I could say things have gotten easier, but well my mother wasn't the only thing I lost....
What a great song and voice!
Midge Ure's voice is again absolutely amazing in this song. He really has an exquisite voice .
