Welcome to American Dream TV. My name is Larry Steinbacher, and I'm your host today. We are at Bunker Hill Golf Course, which has a rich history dating back to 1927. Let's head on in.
Cheri and Arnold Ingraham tell about the history of Bunker Hill.
In 1818, the Hamilton family first settled in this area. They had a family member who drove an artillery wagon in the War of 1812 at the Battle of Bunker Hill. So when the family came, they named their farm Bunker Hill Farm. So when the sixth generation, Walter Kennedy inherited the property and didn't want to be a farmer because he was a businessman. He got to know the local business people, and they said, Hey, Walter, we don't have a golf course in Medina County, so Walter hired a golf course architect., and 1927 the golf course opened, not a farm, and they named it Bunker Hill Golf Course.
Chad Gibson has been Bunker Hill's general manager since 2017 and is here to tell us a little about the amenities they offer at Bunker Hill. They had done an extensive renovation in 2000 but were getting a little older, so we had to do that big makeover again. We started with the cart paths. Many of the cart paths were blacktop and getting worn, so we started replacing those with concrete paths all the way around. Another thing we like to do is the landscape. We did a whole pavilion there with the landscaping all around. Everybody loves the new golf carts, upgraded seats, and GPS units on all the carts so you can get the yardage, see the greens, and hear tunes through the GPS using their phones.
There are indoor simulators and an event center for business meetings, anniversaries, parties, events, and fundraisers.
We do fundraising for schools, churches, mission trips, and all the different things throughout the community. Fast forward to this room, where I've hosted 2500 golf events and raised over ten million in our local backyard.
Larry Steinbacher said, "So Chad, I spend my winters here at least five, six months a year. You've got six indoor simulators, which were upgraded last year."
Chad Gibson said, "We already had the simulators, but we upgraded again to the Tiger Woods 2.O premium version last year. The graphics are gorgeous. The golf course upgrades are amazing. During the winter, there are two different versions: one for the golfers who like to come and play in the indoor league. And another to play the arcade."
All right, I am here now with Jared UC with the MGA, a group that I am happily associated with here. The MGA stands for the Mediocre Golf Association. Where did that name come from? And tell us a little bit about the history of the MGA. The MGA started in 2006 out of San Francisco, where John Morley and Willie Dills started it. They liked golfing with their buddies but weren't great at golf. They held their first tournament, which is called the Bastards. These tournaments are a take on the Masters tournament. It grew from that point on. They started in Seattle. Seattle was their first expansion chapter in 2008, and now, in 2024, there are over 70 chapters across the United States. And Cleveland is one of the new chapters.
So Jared is the Cleveland chapter leader of the MGA. What do you do at the beginning of the season? I will start scheduling our events for the upcoming year in December and January. I call courses all over Cleveland weekly. Make sure everybody gets paid for the courses. Get everything arranged for our tee shot, closer to pen long drive. I work with sponsorships, too. We have several local sponsors in the area, so we activate the local businesses and the community in the league.
