Living alone, you know your heart can be broken if you lose your spouse. You will never have that sadness of losing someone or you die and break someone's heart. Hey! its great and I am not lonely. Too many things to do.to be lonesome. I am soon to be 74 and thank God I am still healthy.
I am so blessed. After my 2nd husband passed away, 5 years ago, I moved back to the States from St. Croix. I really didn’t want to buy another house or live in an apartment. My son-in-law suggested I build onto their home an apartment, I designed just for me. I have my own separate entrance with a very large “L” shaped porch overlooking their pond, with large picture windows to enjoy the views. I had a roll-in shower if I’m ever in need of a wheelchair. It is small, with a huge walk-in closet. My builder was able to give me 10’ ceilings making my little apartment seem much larger. I’m 73 and see my daughter every day. Yes, I am very blessed.😊
Not once did I hear you mention that you exercise everyday. It's sad that the older people get, especially women, they haven't exercised since junior high school and all look like Everybody Loves Raymond's mom by the time they're 60. I will never date a woman who is shaped like a beach ball. I'm 71, thin, martial artist, very athletic, no vices and I exercise 3 hours a day. I should point out that I've also never been sick, never even been to a doctor. And I'm a psychologist.
I'm 71, the only thin person out of nine children, a health nut because I love fruits and vegetables, no vices, and I exercise 3 hours a day having been a martial artist since age 15. And I love creating light-hearted funny sayings. This one is for you. If you want a headache, fall in love. If you want to fall in love, get a puppy.
Wow. @Ehdrock You know everything about this person who you don’t know and have never have met. Incredible, but your projection of yourself tells us reams about yourself.
Now 74, retired and living alone I agree with the points made in this excellent video. Keep in mind that the wrong partner can make your life miserable and personal freedom is wonderful compensation for solitude. No drama and stress enables satisfaction with everyday life.
I envy you your cat. My last cat died 2 yrs ago. I miss him so much. I’m 90 & don’t want another pet because I worry what would happen to it when I’m gone. I’ve settled for a Betta fish. Not like a fur buddy but something.
'God' appears as a bright light to dead people. That's about it. Apart from the very few living people who have a distinct spiritual experience, he doesn't appear to be doing anything. When is this God going to get up off his holy arse and do something down here to improve the world and prove he exists?
There was a TV show which I can't remember where David Spade was one of the main characters and while talking to two married couples, and him being single, he said "well I'm going to go and do... whatever I want."
I turn 76 next month and have lived alone since I was 43, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love the silence, the solitude and not having to compromise.
Since I turned 85, l like to nap when I can. I still work everyday, drive about 215 to 250 miles a day (freeway and city). Cut wood for winter. Married 64 years. Not rich or even well off but what the heck. I am truly blessed and know it, I thank God for all the blessings He has given me. I try to do a good deed everyday.
I’m not surprised you nap when you can…i think you owe it to yourself as you are so busy. I think some younger people would benefit by being as motivated as you. Well done 😊
I never was on my own until my beautiful late husband dropped dead unexpectedly, I was frozen. I lost my voice. It was 10 years ago this month. I never thought I could ever make it without him. I Did. I’m grateful people posted. It gives us a lot of inspiration and I’m 80 now.
I'm sorry your husband passed 10 years ago. I'm happy you found your voice and discovered your independence. Great job, Congratulations!! I hope you have many more Blessed years to come! Jesus loves you!!
i often wonder what i will do when my husband passes.. ( he has terminal cancer).. i have always thought i can not make it on my own.. i am hoping i am wrong. your comment gives me hope. thank you.
@@julielivingston9207 I lost my beloved husband who was my soul mate and best friend, to cancer in 2020. 4 months later our dog passed away as well and he was only 6 years old. It was during the covid lockdown. All our family live in the UK and we have no children. I was all alone. I honestly wanted to die myself but the experience actually gave me enormous strength. I spend a lot of time alone now as most people my age (I am 66) have children and grandchildren or still have their husbands. I spend time doing hobbies I love, keeping fit, walking in nature, painting, cooking, reading, meditating etc… I never stop missing my husband and beloved pets that have passed away and sometimes I feel sad. That is okay, we feel a variety of emotions but I always feel better again. We all heal from grief at different rates. It does get easier with time. Be kind to yourself and cry your eyes out when you need to, it is a fabulous cathartic release, but also focus on what you are grateful for and do what you love. I feel my husband around a lot of the time and often see him in my dreams. You will feel better in time even if you now feel you never will. Giving you a virtual hug🤗💜
i'm 94, widowed, have lived alone for many years. made my own decision to stop driving. so fortunate to have family, friends, and neighbors who take me to church, shopping, and a weekly restaurant lunch. miss my cat, but won't replace her---i'm no longer able to give a pet the care it deserves. grateful for daughters, grands, and adult greats, who show me love, and make sure i'm okay.
I am an old divorced boomer with no wife, kids, or any more wonderful pets. My few friends have passed on. I'm fine, being totally alone for 10 years, but, at times it gets lonely but I have several hobbies that keep me going.
If like me you might want someone to have a meal and conversation ...I would live to have someone to talk with as I do landscape sketches....but no drama is bliss.
@@marjoriejohnson6535it is bliss most of the time I had abusive parents and two abusive husbands so I’m grateful I survived to live alone. I do have my cat and my little dog but as you say it would be wonderful to have one friend who knows when to give me space but is ready to go out for a meal and a laugh. I do have my telly on most of the day as company I have bipolar so sometimes the silence it too loud for me. We all need to care for ourselves with love and kindness say good morning to whoever we pass.

When at times you feel depressed, think out loud get your thoughts heard by your brain and you will be a lot lighter and a lot happier to enjoy your hobbies even better than you do now.
I am 85. to everyone who reads this, we don't know each other and probably never will but I wish you all the best in life and all the luck in the world friend
I’m going on for my furbaby I am miserable I ache for human contact I’m homebound without assistance I’m riddled with arthritis I spent 46 years with my husband I can’t remember living without him 😢
Arthritis improves with movement and exercise. If you have a dog, please take your dog for a daily walk. Your dog will feel better, and so will you. Also, look into your local senior citizens center for socialization and activities.
@@barbaracarroll4774I’ve heard certain yoga movements are great for arthritis, there are people who say they couldn’t get out of bed but are now walking their dogs and getting out.
My mom lived in a seniors high rise. Her neighbor fell and laid there all day, until the daughter came that evening. The daughter actually blamed my Mom! She beat on mom’s door wanting to know why she didn’t help her mother! Mom told the fool she didn’t know anything about it! That she had no idea ANYTHING was wrong.
I’m 75 and have 4 cats. I lost two of my beautiful cats last year. My cats are so loved and cared for. They are the best companions I could have. I’m also living with my girlfriend. But she’s partially disabled and can’t do physical work. That makes it tough because I can’t do physical work either. I was doing ok until last November when I developed a lung problem. It wasn’t until 9 months later when I was diagnosed with emphysema. Because my health has declined in the last few months I get super depressed. Just last week I learned my PSA test for post-op prostate cancer went up so now I have to get radiation and hormone therapies. I haven’t started the treatments yet and I’m scared to death about all the side effects. The treatments cause loss of libido and a terrible feeling in my body. The treatment will mean I have to go get radiation 5 times a week for 9 weeks. That’s 45 radiation treatments. I don’t know what to do. The doctor said I wouldn’t have a problem for at least 5 years so I’m wondering if I should not have the treatments. I need to talk to the doctor again to ask more questions, like if the side effects are permanent. I love sex so having libido taken away is such a depressing thought. Anyone else dealing with these issues? All the best to everyone.

74 and living alone. Never lonely. Have always enjoyed my own company. Adopted a senior rescue dog 4 years ago that is the love of my life. Recently diagnosed with blood cancer. The cancer is slow growing and symptoms are manageable. I keep in touch daily with friends and family via social media. The more I listen to the spousal complaints of friends, I am so thankful to be alone. Well, I can’t write anything more as I have too much to do. 😊
Have you read the book Cancer, The Metacolic Disease Unravelled by Mark Sloan which tells the truth about what cancer really is and the simple remedies he recommends.
I also adopted a senior dog 4 years ago! She is likely about 17 years old now. She still bounces around happily (for short periods, between naps). We get along well.

@@64morgy this!!! Music it's one of the greatest blessings. You don't realize that when you're little and your parent wants you to practice, but being able to play an instrument is invaluable as You get older. I've never been able to find someone to play music with. I don't feel like I'm good enough to be in a band, but I've always wanted to do duets. You know that sort of thing, but I still play every single day and love every minute of piano. It's also wonderful to just listen to others play.
Just lost my husband 4 weeks ago. (78). It has been good for me to listen to this video and read all the comments. I realize I am not alone..Lost my mother 6 months ago to cancer. Its been a rough year.

I’m 85, I put a combination lock on my condo door and registered my code with the fire department. I also have an extra cell phone by my bed and I have Alexa. I rarely cook except soup etc. But, I do eat out everyday. I’m an Aries, independent and enjoy my only company. I spend lots of time reading, playing brain games and using my iPad. I would rather walk than go to the gym. I live in Florida so it’s hot. I have a goal of 6,000 steps per day. I’m not taking any prescription except eye drops. So far, I’m lucky.
I also live in Florida and prefer to go for a walk than go to gym but it’s just too hot to walk outside in the summer. Good for you doing so well at 85 - I’m 76 and have a cat who’s 19 doing great that goodness… my mom was 103 .
I've lived alone since the mid-1970's and have never, ever regretted it or felt lonely. Couldn't stand roomates and definitely wasn't interested in a spouse. I've enjoyed making my way in life and making my own choices. 50 years of bliss. I own my own home and never have to worry about a divorce making me homeless. As a woman, having one's own money and home allows one to make choices out of desire rather than necessity or fear. I would never do it any other way. So growing older is just an extension of having lived my life. Except now without the pressure of work - yay freedom!

I’m retired. Your story of a conservative savings profile is a common one. Any course of action involves risks. You might be avoiding market risk, but you are taking on other risks like inflation and reinvestment risk.
My wife is willing to work for another 5 years if needed. Are we in good shape? Will we be okay if I begin withdrawing from Social Security when I’m 62 and my wife is 67? Should we hire a financial planner to help us navigate this?
Certainly get a pro to look at your predicament (if you even have one, lol) A second opinion from a comprehensive financial adviser can help you look at more than just your current estimate of cash flow and needs but also longevity risk, outliving your money, tax considerations, legacy planning, healthcare costs, inflation and a myriad of other things you may not be considering when reviewing your current situation
Another 74yr old here. My wee dogs are beside me all day, on my bed at night, and heaps of snuggles anytime. I do love the peace of being alone with God.
That's true when I was young I worried about how I was going to take care of myself. After I lost my dear best friend Louise I feel so alone. Now I my health has declined more that I'm older.
@@mariasisalopez262 I know Maria I feel the same way also sometimes. I too am 66 years old. When I was younger I had "NO IDEA" getting older would be like this.
My dear friend was just widowed. Her husband was terribly sick for two years constantly in and out of the hospital and dialysis. He was running her ragged. The care, stress, worry, sleeping in a chair in the hospital, messed up eating schedule was taking its toll on her. She is 82. He died this summer in the hospital. She is feeling OK, looking better. She’s out and about and is doing very well. Being alone isn’t the worst thing.
Getting older at 66, I live downstairs in a house where my daughter and her kids live upstairs and I love to hear the kids and I love to interact with them but I don't have to have the responsibility for them which is absolutely wonderful! In addition, I have a little online business that keeps me really busy and a couple of cats and I play classical piano so that's something I do all the time and reading, daily walks outside. it's a really ideal situation to be close to family. I think that's one thing Americans have lost. Is the older people living near or with their families like they do in other cultures. It provides a spectrum of experience for the children as well. That is valuable.
The whole West has lost it. Honestly, I always feel a mix of annoyance and amusement because so many Americans seem to think that the USA ìs the West. 😳🤔
My dear, being 66 is barely getting older, but it’s great you can live with family. I’m 79, and maybe I’m getting older soon, but I wish I could live with a family.
With pets, make sure that they will be taken care of if something happens to you. This is so important. If you are old enough do not get young pets. Go to the "Pound" and get an older animal.
Totally agree. My older friend adopted a kitten and said, "Oh my niece will care for the kitten when I die." What a lie she told herself. I've never had a cat who did NOT live to be at least 15 years old. Poor thing.
One of the good reasons to have a pet of a positive breed and an insurance plan for it, is that it will be easier for somebody whom the pet already knows to take over, if you suddenly die or become very unable to care for the pet yourself. One has to take responsibility for the continued care of the pet and be proactive for a smooth transition, even if it is best alternative that you outlive your pet, of course, so we petowners have to be very mindful about staying our strongest and healthiest, body and mind... and especially a dog helps a lot, reciprocally.
As a Christian, I am never really alone. Probably a lot of other Christians will understand. I enjoy reading God's word, praying, praising the Lord in gratitude! He speaks to me through His word and in my spirit. I have wonderful times with the Lord! I do enjoy people also, but do not have a social network like when younger. Being alone with God and seeking Him can be truly a Joyous time of growing closer to Jesus. ✝️❤
Lost my wife to a heart attack after 44 years of marriage. The first year alone was a nightmare, but now a couple years after, life is good again. Freedom to eat, sleep, take a drive or trip is now on my time line. I pick the restaurants, see the movies I want to see. Sure, I do miss marriage, but building a new life can be fulfilling.
Became a widow at 35 yrs old. It was the first time I understood how fragile life/time is and was shattered. I had to get to know myself as an adult alone for the first time. Went from family to husband. It took me a good 10 years to find myself and now I never feel alone, I treasure it. It takes alone time to really know who you are and what you like as an individual. It’s a hard journey because feeling lonely is more about self neglect.
@@janpolo799 I agree people need to live alone - for a significant time period! - to get to know Self. Being a "double hermit" by nature, this came naturally to me, but I'm surprised at how many don't do it.
@user-de8mu8xh9.. “Silence is golden.” If you don’t like it you can always put on music or TV, join a group(s), or go to a public place like coffee shop..
I was looking forward to the silence when I retired but a strange family have moved above me with a child with Autism and what would seem to be a learning disability - she bangs loudly on the wooden floor (my ceiling) continuously every 20 seconds for hour after hour. The ceiling is low and it sounds as though she is in my apartment. Unfortunately the parents seem to think she is normal. I am looking to move house. So I envy you the peace and quiet of the silence.
Pets, hobbies, nice music.........I love living alone. I'm 80, still mow the lawn, do my own gardening, drive myself and do my own shopping. Granted I'm in excellent health and that's a blessing. Take care❤❤
@@lindamannix1247Good heavens! Dealing with a litter box is not as onerous as you think. Having the company of a pet or pets is wonderful and far outweighs having to sort out a litter box which is just a very small part of pet ownership. This hits the nail on the head ! I am an introvert. But my Mother has died and I have no one to share first thing in the morning and last thing at night. The grief is hard and I have to deal with that , it’s awful. 😞
I’m 67 and live alone I’m also retired but I have a very sweet daughter that checks on me everyday and refuses to let me feel lonely. I am a introvert but I like people a few at a time however when I retired there went those I would communicate with I did try and keep in touch but something happens when u retire people don’t reach out or call. It’s almost like well we don’t see each other anymore so there goes the relationship or whatever. This is what happened to me and my very best friend moved to another state we use to do fun things together and talk a lot sharing world issues and daily stuff. It is true that it’s hard to motivate myself sometimes but I do and I stay on top of medical things, preparing meals and keeping a clean apartment and caring for my plants. My most difficult problem now is i suffer from facial hair on my chin area which is very hard to live with so I wax and try to do what I can to deal with this problem so this limits me from going out much due to having a mask 😷 all the time. Yes, life can change in many ways that is for sure.
You could try prayer if you don't already, it can be a two way conversation if you can be still and listen. I read the Bible and pray about what I read as it speaks to me and I sometimes just meditate on what I read and stay still to hear what God is saying to me.
I live in India. I worked for 30 years in a British Company but had to take Voluntary retirement because of my husband's transfer to a different city. I still had 15 years more to work. Being in a new place, different language and culture I was not happy. I was missing my office work. I was then 45 years. My daughter finished her graduation, my son passed his Class 12th. They were still studying. I started going to Old Homes every week carrying goodies etc to cheer them. I took them for Eye check ups whenever they needed. I felt happy. Other days I started catering muffins, patties to Schools. I was settled with my routine. Now I am 78 years, living with my husband. Children are married, living in different Cities. Every day I have my fixed timings for every thing. After washng my self and dressing, I start my day with prayers. Then Excercises, breakfast, dusting the house, watering my plants, Bible Study, and then lunch. After lunch I watch News and then take 1 hour nap. Evenings I hardly step out because I get severe pain in my ankles so I sit in my balcony and watch outside. I love animals and feed milk to a stray cat. Sundays we go to Church. I prepare special non-veg for lunch. I love cooking and baking. Every Christmas we go to our daughter in different city. There I bake Christmas cakes, brownies and other mouth watering goodies for every relative and for visitors. We stay with our daughter and her family for a fortnight. During Christmas and New Year time I meet my sisters too. Financially I am not too sound but God is my helper and taking good care and doing miracles. I thank and praise God and am so grateful to Him.
There's one thing that helps all of us, or we wouldn't be here. The internet ! So wonderful for continued learning, social chats, following & discussing shared interests, discussing news, watching "how to" videos, communicating with loved ones overseas or interstate, getting riled up about politics, world affairs, and seeing how others less fortunate are having to live. It's all here at our fingertips if we're lucky enough. ❤
Yes. Years ago I read a novel where one character said, "I know money can't buy happiness but try being happy without it." So true! It's pretty scary to think of being old without money.
I’m nearly 82 & have been on my own since my beloved husband died, I miss him every day but I am never bored,I have the radio for company,as I like debates, & music, apart from keeping my home, and myself clean,& cook my meals,I go out for a walk morning,& afternoon, sometimes I make myself go,as I know I shall see something to stimulate me,& have a chat to someone,we put the world to rights,& I go home satisfied,my aim in life is to keep healthy,my motto to life is “If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it” So onwards & upwards, to grow old is a privilege,so make the most of each day,we’re dead a long time, the world is beautiful,so enjoy it every day.
I’m 76 and have lived alone for years. One routine that helps me structure my day is something most others can do. I have a close friend from my 30’s who is also alone now. She lives halfway across the country but we talk every morning and talk about anything and everything our children the weather blah blah blah… Most importantly we report what our plan is that day ie. Clean the fridge..laundry..shopping etc. Then we reconnect every evening and tell each other how the day went and what we accomplished. It kind of frames the day as well as being in connection. It makes a real difference. 💜
One of the best things about living alone as an older adult (I'm 81) is that I have time to think. I have spent much time going over the ups and downs of my life and coming to terms spiritually with who I am and that has made me happy, contented and at peace with myself.
(78male, lost my wife last year, 52 yrs married) I have to say to myself out loud very regularly, "Don't think of the past, just thank God I got through it!" - too depressing, I think ahead, how can this or that be done to best effect. Greetings to everyone from New Zealand.
During lockdown I got into Classic Corrie. When you live alone it is good to hear voices. I find the humour in the program helps. I avoid grim dialogue, I watch Tv to be entertained and laugh.
I am retired, 71 and I live alone. Living alone gives me the time to think about what kind of person I was in the past and what kind of person I am today. I can look at my Spiritual failures and take the necessary steps to correct them. I have grown closer to God and have become more tolerant of my fellow man. God Bless all the older people out there who live solitary lives.
Me too, Hon, I take time to read God's Word and think what I can do to help someone else. I live with son and his family. I don't get in their business of life and they don't always understand that I enjoy being in my room alone. Life is good.

All these points in this video are things to keep in mind but reading these comments will show that most people are just fine with living alone and you have many options available to prevent boredom or loneliness. In fact it seems most people prefer their solitude.
There's a All-one-oness about enjoying your own company. I've found I take people on a case by case basis in passing for the most part, which satisfies. Two long distance friends for phone talk. Contentment says it all.
I’m 62…I’ve been alone on my own for over 10 yrs. No one has been to my apt in yrs…my choice. Ive been to one social gathering this yr…by design. I do not call people and I don’t take phone calls. I treasure and protect my time on my own…it’s my most valued lifestyle preference that I have. I go exploring, I travel, hike and backpack, dine out, see shows…and I love doing all of those things ALONE! Your video has some validity, but not for all of us.
I'm impressed, not only by what you posted here, but also by the choices that you have made to guard your privacy and your solitary lifestyle. You are a person who is honoring the importance and value of being alone. Good for you for sticking up for what you believe works for you.
@@wandasciarrino7466 you’re absolutely right, but a person’s introverted personality and lifestyle preferences don’t just change after living that way for 5 decades. My preferences are the deepest roots of how my brain is wired. If I can’t function alone then it’s better for me to call it. Forcing me to live and interact w others is the same as asking me to flap my arms and fly to the moon. For me it would be the same as a prison sentence, and untenable.
@@DesertlizzyThemmm…not a hermit…I live in a large city, and I work in the service industry so I see and interact w ppl all the time. I separate my personal needs from my financial ones. Maybe because I work w the public all the time I don’t want to socialize at all. Maybe I’m schizophrenic and have 2 people living in my head LOL!
One thing I've noticed about living alone as I get elderly now (71) is I just get used to my own world, my own routines, the peacefulness of where I live, meal routines, and when I sleep and wake up. That's fine. Is it? Nope sometimes. I now get quite stressed if I have to go outside my own "zone", fit with unusual routines. I have realised my stress levels really elevate even if I have to go out to town for something! Or go out for a meal with friends (who all lunch, and I never do!) It's so silly to get stressed over nice things like that! I cannot wait to get home.
I got like you a few years ago. And I also love being alone. However, I had no idea what was happening to me when I went out close by to the library or across the street for fish and chips and I couldn't feel my feet as I was walking. I was startled to find that I was actually having panic attacks. My doctor diagnosed this and also warned me to get out more as living too much in your own world can give you a form of agoraphobia which I didn't even realize I was experiencing.
@@susancrawford5927- true. I suffer agoraphobia. First due to trauma, that intensified due to being home constantly. Then depression..I hope to get out some more eventually.
I think one of the worse things about 'lunching with friends' - especially those who don't live alone, too - is that you hear about ALL their 'family troubles', who is ill, who died....UGH. You feel worse, not better, for the experience ! So I'd just as soon stay home with the dog and spend time in the garden with him, or get some take-out food that I like, and pop a favorite movie into the player, and watch it, instead ! LESS hassle.
I am 82 and sold my house and moved into a retirement RV park. It is impossible for anyone to be lonely here. There are about 1500 residents in the winter and 150 in the summer. They have every kind of activity one could imagine. You can have as much solitude as you want, or you can join an activity. It is really great for anyone who wants to live alone and yet be near people.
I'm 68 and since I started living alone five years ago, I got barely any exercise because I wasn't around many people so I had no real reason to go out and get in the motions. Thank you for sharing about needing to be intentional about staying active, ever since I decided to start going on walks around my block I have felt way more at peace and happier every day. It truly does make a big difference
I'm 71 and a retired psychologist and I am constantly telling people at Walmart that I have a list on paper plus the same list on my phone's note pad just in case I leave one at home. Then I tell them I also have a note by my door that says don't forget your phone. Sometimes when I read that note I get my phone and I forget the paper note. I don't believe it's old age because stupidity has always run in my family.
I am blessed with the sanity and comfort that living alone has given me. I’m my own best friend, my own caregiver and creativity abounds ! All worth waiting for, Amen !
A great video I really enjoyed it. I’m 83 and widowed 6 years ago after 54 years of marriage. I loved my husband dearly and would love to have him back. However I have been fine and am enjoying life on my own. I realise that marriage was a compromise it has to be. I have been brave enough to fly abroad on my own for a couple of holidays, I took my granddaughter on a Caribbean cruise, got another dog ( a rescue ) changed the garden layout to make it easier and declutterred. I do everything mentioned in your video and it works. I wish everyone happiness and peace in old age.
At 71, having lived alone all my adult life, I cannot recall a time when the solitude & sanctuary of my urban apartment was more pleasurable. I do wish I'd done more travelling before my mobility began to fail me, but I still find plenty to occupy my time & attention and can happily remain in my home for days or weeks at a stretch without any face to face interactions. I share my space with a cat, which definitely adds a certain life energy to the place, and bless whoever conceived of grocery delivery services. This lifestyle feels like a decent payback for all those horrible school and work years.

Living alone will change your life. You come into this life alone, and leave as well. Good to have that safety net. And a good walk outside is a good thing.

Their are many of us living alone in our homes who seem to be falling thru the cracks when we need help. Not needing daily health care, but needing help with things to hard for a 90 year old to do,but can’t afford to hire. The help is there for all but us.

@@Wisdom-Nuggets-Tid-Bits As an 84 year old Australian woman living alone I'm glad that I have community help through local organisations. I enjoy my own company and keep busy sewing in my studio. However if I meet with friends or anyone really, I can't shut up. I discuss world politics and local situations to the boredom of those around me. I think I need that discussion to keep my brain active. I have no desire to live with anyone but would love to have dinner with someone I can discuss things with. I suppose it's companionship I crave.
I’m close to 60, disabled, and have been alone for more than 10 years. This year I decided to get a full time job, and I love the companionship at work and helping clients via phone. My neighbors 85 and 88 have spent two full days a week cleaning all their lives and their house was always immaculate. At this time, they realized it was too dangerous to be climbing or too hard cleaning floors. They had a housekeeper come every two weeks to do the hard chores. They still clean and keep up with the little stuff. They also hired a gardener to mow the lawn even though they did that for years. They know when to ask for help 😊
@@Appzeei sadly not everyone can afford a Housekeeper and a Gardner. Everything begins to fall apart and becomes overgrown and before you know it things are insurmountable.
Excellent video. I always remind myself how truly alone you can feel with the wrong people in your life. Also, there is alone and there is lonely, which are distinctly different.
I just turned 79 and although I am married, I am lonely. My wife is from a different culture and is bipolar. She and the children and grandson treat me like a stranger because of a comment I made several years ago. I haven't seen or talked to my kids for almost 4 years. My daughter lives about a mile away. I used to have friends that I would get together with for lunch a beer or just a phone call but they have all died. I think I know how Custer felt.
I am 73 years old, retired, and have lived alone for more than 20 years. This video is so accurate. I have never been this happy in my life. It's wonderful. Every day is an exciting time to live.
Physical activity is most important. A hot cup of coffee, confidence, knowing you belong in this world are all important. Be confident, indifferent, and stay active.
I always had cats. Now I have a small dog. She loves life and other people. When she wakes up, she jumps up as if to say: 'Great! Another day!' So funny. She's great companion and keeps me active. Thanks to her I meet and talk to a lot of people. I even made a best friend. A woman who lives nearby and gives me the feeling I belong. My husband died. I don't have children. I'm an introvert. But this tiny dog really helps me staying cheerful and social. The most important thing for me is taking good care of me and my dog. I love clothes and even when I'm not going anywhere, I'm well-dressed cause it gives me a good feeling. The hardest thing for me is house work, cleaning and cooking. I hate a mess but I just don't have the energy to do a good job. That really annoys me and worries me. I love music and singing. And there's nobody who says: 'Keep it down.' I grew up with five siblings and never had any privacy. Now I do and I love it.
Looking good Hettie! L don't have children either but still have a husband, he is a keen fisherman, we are both 72. I would get a little dog too if I was left alone. I do have a strong faith and prayer life that sustains me a lot.
This all sounds great. However if financially your not in a good place, it’s very hard. Worst of all is if you have health issues that prevent you from being very active. And making friends is very hard. Being old n alone sucks.
So many people equate alone with lonely. I am 82 and have lived alone for 50 years. When I was younger, I had a very active social life and many friends. My last long-time friend died in April and I am now really alone except for the cats. It's strange to realize that I have outlived almost everyone I know. I miss having a shared history with others and never will have that again. When mobility and health issues show up, it is frustrating to be unable to do all the things you once did without giving it a thought. Your video talks about organizing get togethers. That's impossible if all your friends have died. I spent most of my youth raising my sons and then caring for my family so it's nice to have absolutely no responsibility towards anyone except myself. I honestly like the peace, quiet and solitude.
Laurel Curtis I can totally relate to that you have said. I too have outlived almost all of my long time friends. I have two left that are still alive but i do not live close to them. I am going to get a newer truck so i have reliable transportation and I am going to drive to Warsaw, Missouri where my friend Kenny lives and also out to Beaumont, California where my friend Bill lives. I I've in San Pedro, California and have been putting it off for far too long.
At 75 five years ago, I reslised I was failing with exercise. So I built a simple spreadsheet and determined to hike, with poles, 6 kilometers per day. That thing drives me, but now, at 80, I am fit and have purpose. I'm quite proud too of seeing over 10,000 kms of "overall total".
Decluttering is the hardest. I have 2 storage units, plus a 2-bdrm apt which is over-flowing. I am 81 years old, in good health. I just can't mentally face this challenge. My family is troublesome to me. I hesitate to have unknown people into my apt. Excellent article. Thank you.

I am thrilled to have to do nothing if I don't want to. I don't mind being alone most of the time; I enjoy peace and quiet. I am pretty content with my life right now and don't seem to have any complaints worth making any issues over.
I lived with a narcissist for years so living alone is like freedom!! I GRT lonely sometimes but am not afraid to go places alone. I have some friends but they are often busy. I enjoy walks and binge watching good tv shows and movies. I also have two cats who like to cuddle.
yes, getting free from a narcissist is amazing. I ended a relationship with someone I thought was a close friend, (but realized she was a wolf in sheep's clothing) and also a family member, both of whom were draining me, and actually sometimes cruel. I love the peace of not hearing from them (blocked both). Living alone is so peaceful but you have to get rid of toxic people who want to drain you...

The first months of bereavement are as you describe. Soon you will make a decision that your life has value without your spouse at your side. Not now, but soon. The second year of your loss will bring renewed hope in living and the third year will have you living as many here do, with zest and gratitude. This is sacred time, honor it as such.
Living with the grief of losing my wife has been the hardest, but I definitely agree that self care and a strict fitness regime is very important. I also go out everyday to interact with people, there’s a big difference between being alone and being lonely.

I’m 77 and my husband died 12 yr ago. I live alone. At first I was active. I volunteered at the local soup kitchen in the pantry. I met new people and friends . Had about 5 yrs of that then injured my back. Had 2 long surgeries and practically became invalid. 2 of my new friends died and one moved into a nursing home. Last 6 years I’m totally alone. I eat frozen meals mostly because it easy. I have 2 small dogs, which has become my dearest companions. They give me joy and purpose. I have a strict schedule. Up at 7am sleep at 11. I don’t walk well because of my back and surgeries. I fall a lot. I’m quite small so I don’t get badly hurt with these falls. Sometimes I can’t get up so I have to figure out how. I had a stair lift put in in 2017 but now broken. It’s outside so corrosion took over. I’m doing the stairs now. Very difficult but I make myself do it. Few things I can’t do. Mowing grass and changing my bed. I do have a daughter and 2 grand children. They will do it but not on a timely basis. I really dont want to live with anyone. I do keep my great granddaughter 2 hrs after school . It helps her and helps to fill my day. I was very lonely at first but now I wouldn’t want anyone around all the time.
When I had difficulty changing .my bed I would get a person to put on three sheets and peeled them off as I needed and throw a duve on ...another alternative Is a sleeping bag with a bag style sheet 😊

I am 64 and have lived alone all my adult life. Only time I have issues while living alone is if I have to have a medical procedure done and need someone to take me home. That can be difficult. But having access to the internet helps big time. I can interact with people on social media and it helps with not having someone to talk to. For the most part, I am very happy. Do what I want when I want to do it. Taking care of my cat, who is a great companion.
This video is accurate. Living alone has its pros and cons. I find that shouldering the world all alone is a heavy load. Emergencies, home care, car care, life. The children are grown and have their own lives. That being said, it is better than a bad marriage. Freedom from that stress. If you have enough money, that makes it easier.
I’d rather live alone than to be married and still feel alone.
Living alone, you know your heart can be broken if you lose your spouse. You will never have that sadness of losing someone or you die and break someone's heart. Hey! its great and I am not lonely. Too many things to do.to be lonesome. I am soon to be 74 and thank God I am still healthy.

We are in our 50s with nearly $3M saved, no debt and $50K annual spending. But we avoid the stock market completely.
No one likes market risk, but without longer retirement, taking on risk is often a necessary evil to compensate for inflation.
How does one get a comprehensive fa who isn’t looking to just make a buck from consultancy and whatnot

So this video dosent apply to you then. Your blessed

I have a close friend from my 30’s who is also alone now. She lives halfway across the country but we talk every morning and talk about anything and everything our children the weather blah blah blah…
Most importantly we report what our plan is that day ie.

I can look at my Spiritual failures and take the necessary steps to correct them. I have grown closer to God and have become more tolerant of my fellow man. God Bless all the older people out there who live solitary lives.

Lot of difference being 62 as opposed to 72.
Would your call yourself a loner or even a hermit?😳
Understand perfectly seldom want to leave my home
I got like you a few years ago. And I also love being alone. However, I had no idea what was happening to me when I went out close by to the library or across the street for fish and chips and I couldn't feel my feet as I was walking. I was startled to find that I was actually having panic attacks. My doctor diagnosed this and also warned me to get out more as living too much in your own world can give you a form of agoraphobia which I didn't even realize I was experiencing.
@@susancrawford5927- true. I suffer agoraphobia. First due to trauma, that intensified due to being home constantly. Then depression..I hope to get out some more eventually.
That's just a lack of confidence, I'm the same if I don't have to go out for a few days it takes a lit for me to get out if the front door
Me neither!
Do you feel safe?
I did the same thing, I turned 55 in February, and immediately bought an rv and rv lot in a retirement community at the Ga/SC state line. Love it!!
That is brave!! I’m glad you’re happy!

Make lists or you'll forget what needs doing. A shopping list is a must.
I have post-it-notes inside my cupboard doors to remind me of the ingredients in my most used recipes.

I have a cat, live in the city in a high rise building, use the stairs to the 11th floor and go for walks in nature. As for cooking, I use the crock pot, but mostly buy prepared meals from the Amish market. My son lives 20 minutes away. Life is good!
I'm pleased I've listened to this; I thought I was the only one who felt this way about chores etc. My health is a little compromised and thats the hardest thing for me. My neighbors 85 and 88 have spent two full days a week cleaning all their lives and their house was always immaculate. At this time, they realized it was too dangerous to be climbing or too hard cleaning floors. They had a housekeeper come every two weeks to do the hard chores.
That's wonderful to hear!
Physical activity is most important. A hot cup of coffee, confidence, knowing you belong in this world are all important.
Be confident, indifferent, and stay active.
SO TRUE
Great practical advice. Thanks.❤

Absolutely right 😢
So many people equate alone with lonely.
Sending you hugs, may your back be healed totally sis.Amen.
Back surgery is dificult for revalidation I know@@sudhakhristmukti1930
*"I am a smaLL Person & sooo, I Don't GET Hurt when I FaLL"!!!*

When I had difficulty changing .my bed I would get a person to put on three sheets and peeled them off as I needed and throw a duve on ...another alternative Is a sleeping bag with a bag style sheet 😊
You sound like you put forth effort to be at peace with your circumstances and blessed to have grandchild I hope someone will notice your needs and help you with repairs
At 78, I’ve lived on my own for many years. I do have a cat and take many precautions. I actually do take my phone with me when I take a shower. I love living alone.
