It wouldn't be Joe's if it didn't have his trademark of angle iron trim on it. Joe are you kidding me. You Crack me up with the indicator to know how much dog food you got. That's going above & beyond my friend. I wish everyone treated there fur babies & live stock as well as you do. If I was a chicken, goat, or an outside dog, I'd want you to be my master. Your a good man, Joe. Job well done sir. Have a wonderful day, Chris from Missouri
Aww thank you Chris! But the indicator was kind of an after thought. I originally planned to have a little plexiglass slot cut in the side. But glued it together before I cut that slot…. And didn’t want to have to router the inside channel ‘blind’. So this was just the tinkering way to kinda add that extra little interest factor 😉
I love this build, especially the simplicity of the mechanism! We have a large family, and we are adding some cabinetry to our kitchen. I am looking to build a wall-mount version for dispensing rice, flour, grits, etc. Thanks for showing off your design and skills.
Thank you! Yeah that was a little after thought but I think it’ll be nice to have them convenient for my wife and daughter to not have to go digging through the pantry to find them.
That looks like it would be a handy addition to your travel camper. Thanks for sharing this insightful video. Wishing you and your family a blessed week, gentle weather, nourishing rain and restful evenings. Peace brother
I used to do quite a bit more years ago and for some reason just have the hankering for some leather projects coming up. Gonna make a little belt pouch for my daughters victorinox…. And maybe a couple other little odd projects with it. Always smells so good when I get going with it!
Thank you! Yes I’ve seen that one, and the removable bowl was inspired by theirs. Of course mine is no where near as nifty as their handle operated mechanism!
Great project and it is obvious that Oliver thinks you are awesome. The only think about the built is the look that Oliver gave you when you pulled out that bone and then put it back in the bin. Thank you for sharing.
I made something similar for my roosters..as they eat different feed..it is higher than hens can reach plus tbey are busy scrambking for their pellets...i did add a "window" the length of the front to watch level of feed. I simply routered it out and placed some plexi glass behind it...😅 Nice job on your design..love the clean lines of the aluminum
That’s awesome to hear! You could do the same design and just have two bowls. Fill one up and pop out and set down…. And then pop the other one in to fill up. Or you could do a double bowl😉👍
You’re the best. Lol. At the beginning you’re like “That’s pretty good..” Like you were surprised at how well you built it. Your humility make me laugh! (:
Excellent concept and execution. I think that a strip of perspex or similar let into one side would make a good alternative for an indicator but you will soon get an idea of how often you need to replenish the food.
You know what….that was my original plan but then I put the box together before I cut the channel🤦♂️. And didn’t want to have to do the route ring blind by sticking my arm in there after it was built😂
You could add a handle at the like a slot machine so you don't have to bend over. I liked and subsribed after hearing the projects you are working on all things I wish I could . I now live vicariously through you....no pressure
Such an awesome build! You have great ideas all the time so thank you for sharing them on your channel! One thing to think about with this awesome feeder you have built....The dog food oils and fats go rancid over time and get caught on the walls of the container (we noticed this issue last year for one of our long term food containers). If you ever notice Olive not eating the food from the container, just give it a good smell inside. Some of the food oils/fats could be rancid in the container itself. We got around this issue by storing our dog food in it's original bag, inside the container. The fats and oils would never touch the container and the food never goes bad. We live in northern Utah so it's dry here like you down south. Love your channel and homestead :)
That is good info…thanks! I actually plan to cost the inside with poly….but wanted to be able to let it sit for a while before I put food in it. And I really wanted to get this project checked off the list and the video posted. So I’ll likely let this fill drain down… then wipe it out, coat it, then let the finish sit outside for a week or so for a full cure. I was hemming and hawing about if I even should…but your comment and being that you are in Utah extra confirmed it for me😊🙏
@@homesteadonomics you could always see how it goes long term without lining it with poly. It might be the best for the long run though. Line it with poly and swap it out every now and then once you smell it. We just wondered why our guy would look at us awhile before eating and then slowly go to his food.... We were heartbroken knowing his food was stinky and he was still eating it. I'm sure lots of people have this issue! Thanks for the reply. Love the channel!
Genius... Although am thinking of making it more automotive by usi g motors which goes in and out at specific time but don't want any one get stuck in it while it's going in..
Man how much you want? Because this is genius, and is a perfect invention for my dog. Also, you should make it a pulley type of system when the dog pulls the handle themselves. Especially, if you're like me why travels a lot so im not always around to feed them on time. It be great if they would be able to do it themselves. 😊
It needs a handle on each side so it's easy to move whilst sweeping the floor. Fun fact... If you measure the head of your vacuum and make the next feeder's legs a little wider, it will make vacuuming the floor a lot easier. 💖🌞🌵😷
Love the idea, but your pup has more self control than mine do. They’d have that mechanism figured out in no time flat, if not just knocking the thing over outright. Awesome video!
Nice! I love your design but I would have made the inside bottom feed shoot angled towards the bowl on all sides of the box. Love your videos and your beautiful place you have built there in the lower desert.
Our dogs (a black lab and a west highland terrier (westie)) obviously eat different amounts, so I want to come up with a way to “accurately” measure their proper portions. Would the size of the hole you drill out for the food be the way to achieve this? @Honesteadonomics
I made something similar for my dog, he figured out "unlimited" refills a few days later. I added a small gate latch so when it's closed, it stays closed
Very cool. I love this. And oh my goodness you have a black female dog named Olive! I do too. You can see her in a recent video I posted where she's barking at a piece of metal she found. I've never seen that tool that made the slits at the beginning. I wonder if I could build something like this for my Olive? I have about half the tools you do.
Haha…that makes awesome! And about the tools. You can certainly do this with just a few basics. Drill/driver for sure. Miter saw is nice but a circular saw can do all the cuts. And the biscuit joiner isn’t totally necessary at the beginning. Just use screws in place of those for the box build. So pretty much a drill, driver and router would do most of it. But for the bowl opening a router with round over but will make things easier to get That final finish. And all of the aluminum can be cut using just the same blades you use on the wood.😉👍
@@homesteadonomics Wow thanks for the reply. Yeah, I had the idea to name her after a black olive since I like real olives. Would work with a red dog too. Oh that's great to know. I do have two drills, a mitre saw, circular saw, jig saw and a router but no bits for it yet. The router is new but wow I found out how expensive the bits are so I hope to get some soon. Glad I can build these with just the tools I already have.
Great idea, wonder if it would be worth putting a box around the bowl to catch food when the bowl is removed for cleaning ie somebody accidentally closes the draw with no bowl in place and dumps the food on the floor 😅
Oh no…that would NOT be good😂. Perhaps I’ll add a limitless thing that pops up when the bowl isn’t in place that would prevent it from being slide back in. But when the bowl is in place it keep it down🤔

I've been looking forward to this since you posted on IG. I like the look and function of this dispenser. The weight to indicate full to empty is such a good idea. Did you seal the inside of the dispenser too? And- "Good girl, Olive!!"
