@@mvhelloworld What about engines with oil filter mounted "on top" of the engine? I have two oil filters on my boat engine (Volvo Penta D6) mounted standing (not hanging as on most engines), I can't prefill them. There is no use filling the filters.
@@KirbyHegner there should be a method of turning over (cranking) one of those engines with the starter, but without actually allowing it to start. On my old Hatteras, I can hold the engine STOP button while pressing engine START. This should allow the oil pump to turn and fill the filter with oil. I do this briefly as a matter of habit when starting my engines anyway, because I believe it gives them a chance to build up some oil pressure before actually starting.
this is marginally true, but inly from dumkopfs; you get the same chances everytime you fill or top off the engine with oil, you actuall drop more dirt and debris in removing the oil filler cap/ plug. if you fill the filter frol the pressure side it woul trap any debris you happen to drop in from your dirty hands, the only othe place it could come from is from the inside of the new filler bucket. you have the same chance of contamination from installing a dry filter. ive personally seen several failures from debris from the old filter not getting cleaned out properly. and with large engines many time the oil goes thry dirty funnels.
Interesting! Though I have travelled in boats a few times, I do not own one!
Fascinating!!! Awesome Technique!! Kudos!
Why fill the filter? Oil passes the filter on its way back to the sump
Here’s one take on it…

Pre- filling filters is a major NO NO. That’s a sure way to introduce contamination.

Wrong.
