Christmas Lights and Calm Seas!
Completing our seasonal migration south, we left Southport, NC and went inside to anchor one night at Bird Island in Little River Inlet. We left before sunrise the next day to make Charleston, where we spent Thanksgiving.
We went outside again to Hilton Head (Calibogue Sound) to anchor for one night, and had another incredibly calm outside run to Fernandina Beach, FL the next day.
We spent some time docked in Fernandina. We needed to replace our 4 year old flooded lead acid 8D thruster batteries to get our bow thrusters operational again, and were very happy to work with Patrick and Chris from Mobile Marine Electrical. They did a very professional job. share/152Y9QHJhn
Finally we ran outside to St. Augustine where we anchored for one night before heading inside to Palm Coast.

Docking in Strong Winds!
Переглядів 84121 день тому
Docking with strong winds blowing you off the dock can be challenging, especially when your bow thruster is inoperative. In this video we continue the journey south from Morehead City outside in the Atlantic Ocean to Masonboro/Wrightsville, down the ICW through Snow’s cut to the Cape Fear River. We anchor for a night across from Deep Point Marina at the Tina’s Pocket Anchorage before proceeding...
Inlets Can Be Dangerous

We made a big mistake running out of the Beaufort/Morehead Inlet, failing to check for wind against tide conditions. We knew we’d be facing head seas with south winds all day on our way to Masonboro Inlet, but simply didn’t check the tides. We won’t be repeating that mistake again soon!

Real-Time Update, Side Trip to Little Washington NC
Переглядів 15Місяць тому
We enjoyed our first cruise to Washington NC very much. It’s definitely worth the stop. We ended up staying for just over 2 weeks. Beautiful sunsets there. The locals are very nice and friendly. Lots of options for dining and for boating needs. We were able to get cheap, same-day delivery from West Marine, Lowes, and AutoZone for parts and tools that we needed.
Real-Time Update From Smith Point Light
Переглядів 1732 місяці тому
Migration South has begun! Smith Point Light at the mouth of the Potomac also marks the Maryland/Virginia line. Sunny and fairly calm conditions, but a fetch coming straight down the Chesapeake Bay from the North has created sizable swells. But thankfully they are helping to push us. Yesterday the wind out of the South would have had us fighting a head sea.
Changing The Oil in Dual 8V92 Engines

Want to know how to change the oil in Detroit Diesel 8V92 engines? Or maybe you just find it enjoyable to follow along and watch the process. This is how I perform an oil change on the dual Detroit Diesel 8V92Tib marine engines in a 1989 Hatteras 60MY. These classic Hatteras Motor Yachts are built like tanks, so keep the engines well-maintained and they will keep cruising for a very long time. ...

    Well, well - I've assisted in the 'letting-go' of a 740' (225 M) and 42000 MT (displacement) ship with just 5 people, two of which were on the bridge - captain and wheelsman. Four lines were out - two forward and two aft. One deckhand was sent on the berth to first cast-off the 2 forward lines. The captain kept the bow alongside using the forward thruster, as the deckhand proceeded aft to cast-off the 2 aft lines, afterward climbing-up a long aluminum ladder rigged to an electric hoist motor. Working the winches on deck, was 1 mate and another deckhand. We also worked the forward deck first, then walked aft to let go the aft lines (not stern lines, but 2 lines 'on the hip'). The captain then sprang the bow off, using the forward thruster, then kicked-out the stern from the berth with combination rudder and stern thruster, all the time relying on 'spots' from the mate on deck, relaying to him, distances-off 'the quarter'. Once the quarter and stern were safely clear of berth - midship rudder and full ahead... Five people.

    Why fill the filter? Oil passes the filter on its way back to the sump

      @@mvhelloworld What about engines with oil filter mounted "on top" of the engine? I have two oil filters on my boat engine (Volvo Penta D6) mounted standing (not hanging as on most engines), I can't prefill them. There is no use filling the filters.

    • @mvhelloworld
      @mvhelloworld 3 місяці тому

      @@KirbyHegner there should be a method of turning over (cranking) one of those engines with the starter, but without actually allowing it to start. On my old Hatteras, I can hold the engine STOP button while pressing engine START. This should allow the oil pump to turn and fill the filter with oil. I do this briefly as a matter of habit when starting my engines anyway, because I believe it gives them a chance to build up some oil pressure before actually starting.

    Pre- filling filters is a major NO NO. That’s a sure way to introduce contamination.

    • @sparkyobrian6417
      @sparkyobrian6417 3 місяці тому

      this is marginally true, but inly from dumkopfs; you get the same chances everytime you fill or top off the engine with oil, you actuall drop more dirt and debris in removing the oil filler cap/ plug. if you fill the filter frol the pressure side it woul trap any debris you happen to drop in from your dirty hands, the only othe place it could come from is from the inside of the new filler bucket. you have the same chance of contamination from installing a dry filter. ive personally seen several failures from debris from the old filter not getting cleaned out properly. and with large engines many time the oil goes thry dirty funnels.

I was very lucky to find Dennis and Madd Hatter Mobile Marine in New Bern, NC. Former Hatteras factory guys. Terrific. We worked on this project together, but he took over the majority of the hard work, and went above and beyond with the physical and connection installation details. Awesome work!
