I have had these Olive wood logs for a while now and have been saving them for something special. This is an amazing wood to turn. Besides for the stunning wood grain, it smells very pleasant and is a joy to work with. A few weeks back my friend Mike Holton posted a video of a bowl he made from Jarrah Burl wood and resin. I loved the shape and just couldn’t get it out of my head when thinking of what to make next. So I asked Mike if he would be okay with me attempting a similar design. He said he would be honored. This is probably my favorite piece I’ve made to date. I really like the unique shape and the contrasting colors of the wood and resin. Unfortunately it is difficult to capture the true beauty of this piece on camera. The resin looks very dark but is actually quite translucent in person. Thank you very much for letting me borrow your design Mike. Much appreciated. And thank you so much for watching. If you are interested in watching Mikes video I will leave a link below. I hope you have a wonderful day. Scott Please see description for affiliate links of products and tools used.
The way you saved these logs for something special and turned them into a beautiful project is truly impressive. Your attention to detail and dedication to your craft really shows in the final result. I learned so much from watching you work, and I can't wait to see what you come up with next. Thank you for sharing your skills and creativity with us!
I just found your channel, subscribed, and look forward to binge watching all of your videos. I admire your visions and love watching you bring them to light. Thank you for sharing your gift.
This video was absolutely brilliant! Your ability to save and transform these logs into something remarkable is a true testament to your skill and creativity
Beautiful. Olive wood is one of my favorites. And that epoxy color is just spectacular. I really need to find some classes in my area. I have a thousand ideas in my head .
Meh. You don’t need classes. Just go to UA-cam university. There are some amazing instructional style channels out there. I’ve only been doing this for seven months and have taken no classes. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. It’s called learning. Just stay safe. You can do it! Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day! Scott
Olive wood is soooo pretty. Just turned a few pieces of it, still learning. Part of me wishes i had saved them for when i am better, but still a great learning experience.
It’s funny you say that because I feel the same way about saving specific pieces for when I’m better at this. I’m slowly starting to just go for it after hearing someone I have a lot of respect for say “it’s only a piece of wood”. I can get more. It not a waste if we are enjoying ourselves doing something productive. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a great day. Scott
Outstanding looking piece of work, terrific shape with the wide outer rim so you see more of the wood if something is in the bowl. I also use the rice method to calculate how much resin. Didn’t you have a video posted on your finishing process ? I think you brush it with epoxy and wet sand in between coats ? I may be mistaken or the process is in a build video. Have a great day 👍
Thanks. I prefer using math to calculate the volume needed, but irregular shaped pieces like this make that difficult. I should have known better and added more to my fudge factor. Lesson learned. I have commented on my finishing process in a previous video, but honestly it is still evolving as I try new things and learn. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day. Scott

Love your videos...I'm a brand new turner. What do you use to seal your bowls and things you make that will contain food and drink? Thank you for what you do! Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much. ( I’m pretty new to turning as well. Roughly 6 months). As far as food safe finishes go I would recommend to do some research. It’s a debated topic and no matter what I say there will be someone who says I’m wrong. That said, I would recommend raw linseed oil or walnut oil followed up with beeswax. They are good option and I personally prefer the natural look and feel they give to the piece. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day. Scott
Really lovely finish to a wonderful project I prefer your take on mike's bowl his was good but I think I like yours is better in part because olive is my favourite wood to turn not taking any thing away from mike holton who is a favourite of mine I just think the olive took it look forward to your next video Thanks Jamie
Thank you Jamie. I really like turning olive wood as well. It’s the smell for me. Smells fantastic. Unfortunately it’s a little difficult for me to get. I have two pieces left that I’ll save for something good. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day. Scott
@@squareandlevel that's a shame I can get my hands on olive quite often the only trouble for you is I am in England and it's not a cheep wood I look forward to seeing you use the rest of the olive you have Scott Cheers Jamie
My Favorite so far. The olive wood is stunning and the epoxy is great. It has a slight UFO vibe--very cool. Maybe in the future you can use metal gray epoxy for the body of a UFO shape then the lid could be a translucent dome. That would be the coolest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Barry. You and my son had the same thought. He wanted me to make a little dome lid and put an “alien” figure inside it. Appreciate the positive feedback as always sir. It is very appreciated. I hope you have a great day. Scott
Very nice work, thanks for sharing this! You might have saved some epoxy by inserting sort of a wooden semi-circle in the center where were you were going to hollow out later ;-)
Thank you. I understand I could save a small amount of resin by doing what you suggest, but then it would limit the options once turning begins. I have tried this in the past and told myself the resin saved wasn’t worth limiting the design options. Truly appreciate the feedback. I hope you have a great day. Scott
Thank you Mike. I’m glad you liked it. Now that I’ve made it I can move on and see other shapes in pieces I’m going to make. Just couldn’t get this one out of my head. Thanks again for everything. Hope you have a great day sir. Scott
I often wondered how you guys calculate how much resin to make! At first I thought, “ Rice! I’m pretty sure that’s not in the recipe!” Then I figured it’s a mathematical equation you use to figure out the volume to mix. Then when it became a blue-green blob I thought I recognised a blue cake I once baked. It didn’t make near the mess yours did though! I’ll bet it was tastier though, but was gone within a day. Your creation will last for yonks though! (That’s Ozzie for ages!) well done mate! I love the way you work your craft! Very interesting results! ❤️🥣❤️😊🦘🇦🇺 Brilliant job…….yet again!
Thank you very much. I prefer to use math to determine the resin volume needed, but sometimes the shapes are difficult to measure so rice is a good option. Just need to remember to add a little fudge factor to the final amount so I don’t come up short. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day! Scott
Do you mind me asking what you are using for the circular part of your molds? It looks like some kind of cardboard, but I just can’t identify what it actually is sir? Love the olive wood. Wish I could get my hands on some, but I am in the Northwest so I work with mostly maple, alder, and walnut. That olive wood is incredible!
You are correct. It is cardboard tube for pouring concrete footings. I lined it with packing tape so the resin wouldn’t soak into it. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a wonderful day! Scott

When I saw you measuring the volume with rice I thought it might be worth a try to fill voids in a piece of wood with a mixture of rice and resin. This could give an interesting structure. But maybe the rice is too brittle and the grains will fly all around the shop when turning.
Interesting idea. Not sure how it would work or look. I’ve found filling voids with coffee grounds and thin ca glue works and looks good. Thanks for watching. Have a great day! Scott
