Wow! I believe this is the same car I saw in a Worcester, MA body shop back in the early 80's. I was getting my '63 E-Type painted and this was parked in the back of the shop.
One of my favorite designers, & you can clearly see design details seen in his later cars, (the Espada was simply stunning)! One thing they didn't mention was the multitude of concept vehicles that appeared over the years for an E-type replacement that never saw production, although this strictly-speaking was a design-exercise rather than a prototype/concept-vehicle!
You know, I never knew the story on this car. And I didn't realize there was only 1. I sure am glad it found it's way to Jay's garage so we could get a good look at it.
I see where the Mach 1 mustangs of 71-73 got their styling from
I was thinking the same thing
Great video, cool car, i have learn about this concept. Thank you Jay
Haters...Try producing your own VLOG before judging someone else. (And who cares if someone is a little nervous. I would be honored, and possibly a little nervous, if Jay invited me on his show.) Thanks Jay!
great show!
He's not dishonest....the guy is just really nervous because he's being filmed. Nice car!
Or afraid of an accident, some are pretty nervous with valuables risks.
Or that his under frame is kind of of lady like.
fantastic Jay, and i got to say: i absolutely love the interior, switches, gauges, buttons, steering wheel, seats, love it!
Ah, he's just nervous. I would be, too. It's Jay, c'mon!
Could Jay lean on the car with his hand on the finish of this beautiful one of a kind car any longer??? (keep your grubby mitts off Jay!)
I would be extremely nervous on camera next to Jay like that- props to the guest! Ignore the negative commenters that aren't focused on the car like they should be sir. Another great show Jay- can't thank you enough for making these!!!!
Agreed 100%
I've always been a big fan of everything Bertone did. Thanks.
Geez, these shows on youtube really come to show what a great job regular mainstream midia does when it comes to putting people they interview at ease in order to get rid of that awkward feeling when you watch a shy person in front of the cameras. Nonetheless, yet another f'ing awesome vehicle and funny comments by our favorite real life bobble head doll.
Jay, you should buy that car. You'll look after it they way it should be looked after.
Mr. Leno,
Great review of the Pirana. Also thank you for the classic closing ay your shop. Wouldn't be a Leno review without the classic garage pull in and final words.
What a cool design, have never heard of this one before. And that front end is BEAUTIFUL! Always love discovering cars I've never heard of on this channel
I remember this car, and thank you for showing it.
Thanks Jay for reminding us of our great designers.
This guy is wearing his little brothers shirt and his sisters jeans. keeping it in the family.
this is perfectly fine in Europe
Hahahahahhaha
So funny. I was going through all your videos and then I refreshed my feed and saw that you uploaded a new one, lucky me
I remember very well seeing this wonderful car in magazines years ago and wishing I could own it ! If I had the money Now and keep it safe , I would certainly purchase it !! Thank You for seeing it and actually driving it. C/O RDRT.
16,000 miles in 48 years, it's not even broken in yet. Maybe the 4th auto show was Expo 67 in Montreal. A lot of European cars came over for the World's Fair and then were sold instead of shipping them back to Europe. My cousin ended up with a Lotus Europa prototype they showed in Montreal, it was # 13 on the assembly line, even the Series 1 cars were much better. But anyway, thanks for the look at this piece of almost lost Bertone design Jay.
Jay I love your vids m8. Legendary, a genuine car enthusiast
I love the EXHAUST NOTE . Nothing like a 6 cylinder Exhaust with those glass packs .
Nice profile on a lost classic. Another great program Jay.
Cool car Glad to see it's still around and not crushed.
It was funny to see your face when the dude wanted to refuse you driving it LOL!!
Even funnier when he asked "Whos driving it you or me?"
This was funny.
Very cool looking car. I have to agree with an earlier comment. I definitely think that the guys designing the Mach 1 got some inspiration from this thing. I can always count on Jay to expand my car universe.
Thank you Jay, just thank you. I really don't understand those who complain about what you are doing with this channel and spending your money and time with classic vehicles. IMHO I think we should all be very grateful for what you are doing, and giving to us Petrolheads from all over the Globe (i'm from Denmark) There's nobody doing this the way you do, everybody else have their preferences and specialties so it becomes very narrow and specific, whereas you seem to cover all areas of the vintage vehicle heritage. So again thank you sincerely. And just one little request, not that I think you owe it to anybody, but could you get an old 80" Land Rover Series 1 in there, this being the final year for this iconic 4x4?
10:30 that voice crack. 😂😂😂 he's probably just nervous riding along with Jay.
Q: Why do Brits drink warm beer?
A: Because Lucas made refrigerators too
Oh that US auto maker propaganda about UK cars as they were scared they would take a large slice of their home market. The UK car industry did the same thing with cheap imported Czech Skodas - spread it about they are poorly made and unreliable, which they were not. I have had countless cars with Lucas electrics and all worked fine. Highly reliable and simple.
In the 1970s Rolls Royce were asked why they fitted a Japanese radio. They answered that 'it was the best'. RR also fitted Lucas electrics. The US companies with plants in the UK, Ford and Vauxhall, also fitted Lucas.
BTW, your ignorance on beers is showing. Certain beers are to be drunk at room temperature or just below. I bet you put ice cubes in fine wine.
then you're the only one.....I've owned several British cars including a Bug Sprite, MGB and a Triumph.....fun little cars but the electronics, SU carbs required continuous work....know many others that owned 60's and 70's British cars and the thread is common...... sorry to burst your bubble....I started driving in the 70's and don't remember a single instance of US automobile manufacturers going after the Brits.....the Japanese for sure....would love to see the ads your talking about....FYI it was a joke.....

BL made some great cars. Look at GM, Ford, Chrysler in the USA. Wow! Even John DeLorean constantly criticised Detroit for turning out unreliable, over expensive, ugly, scrap.
You're a champion Leno!
OMG the interior is gorgeous!! :) Interesting Jaguar heritage.
That guy gives me the impression of a dishonest car salesman
All used car salesmen are dishonest.
He appears to be very nervous.
lol same dude has a sketchy smile
Pete Hudo You can throw the NEW car salesmen into that mix as well!
Just doesn't seem like a guy that would own that car. Should be driving a pickup or something.
These oddball cars are really neat, I like that you're documenting them for future generations. Although the car is ugly IMHO I can appreciate what it is. Keep the fantastic videos coming, Jay!
Beautiful car. Thank you.
I’m an XKR Owner and this has become my fave Jag along with the obvious love of ETypes and DB7-XKs. Those designers are so freaking talented, I watched one sketch a design and it looked like a Black/white PHOTO after 20 minutes! I can’t Even sketch the Dodgers Logo!
Hi Mr. Leno, I was wondering if at some point you could do a showcase of the posters and prints that you have in your garage? I've fallen in love with the prewar posters that you have. Thank you!
That rear window opening was kind of funny,as Jay mentioned it drew in the exhaust. We found out the same thing when I was a kid and we would ride in back of my Dad's pickup with a camper top,we'd open the back window to get air and the exhaust would get sucked in from the tail pipe as there is a low pressure created at the back of the vehicle going down the highway. We learned fast to keep that closed tight.
i saw this car in person at Fast Cars in Redondo Beach. very impressive. very big. looks like an espada, but then again bertone designed both....
I eagerly await new episodes of Jay's garage.
Most beautiful proto car ever.. Should have been the e type follow up. Love it!
I enjoyed another cool show u could c jay new alot about the car as a kid he probably really was looking foward to c the car in person and drive it being a one off with all the publicity it got back in 67 that had to b cool for jay to experience something he obviously admired since a kid but not enough to buy it u no he would if it impressed him enough and it would look good in the jag section thanks jay
I'm glad to see the show this week especially since there was no Top Gear on.
This car is so typical of the late 70s. From the 60s... Amazing!
This guy and his dictator machine reminds me of Ricky from "The Trailer Park Boys."
It's just water under the fridge man.
Jay should do a burnout in Ricky's New Yorker.
A friend of mine has Lahey's banana yellow 78 New Yorker. I had to talk him out of a similar 78 Lincoln. It went like this... Do you really need 40 feet of banana boat in your driveway?!
PGTMR2
Pfft...it's just a frikin car, this aint Rocket Appliance.....
5252dan
I just got an email today Netflix online has Season 9 ready to be enjoyed.... 8^)
1990 300zx twin turbo Jay, it was a game changer!!! When corvette had 250hp, 300zxtt had 300hp. Supra's and rx7's were around 200hp.
Jay Leno you are the greatest 👍
Nice car, can't wait for a video on his Espada when it's finished.
Oh My!!! I AM LOVIN THIS SO MUCH!!!😎😍
Just watched the Daimler dart video followed by the Talbot Lago. Is there a car you haven't broke! I'm sure he fixed the tailgate issue. Great video, loads of background information. Keep em rolling
Anyone else see a little but it mach 1 Mustang?
Kinda
The long hood and headlights reminded me of a 72 mustang
All I see is a Ford Capri
The front look exactly like a Ford Capri...
nope
My kind of car! Vintage, exotic, and unique :D
Jay!!!What a beautiful (F) Kar!!!!Congrat's to your Garage,from Portugal...Can I drive?
I like how the A/C vents are on the roof!
Very Espada-ish. This is a good thing! Lovely car.
The Espada was hideous.
Jai Courvoisier All opinions mate
Jai Courvoisier The Espada is awesome! Miura is hideous.
February WAT?????
DIZAZZO
Yup :D
very cool looking espada variation
Beautiful interior.
The Prius has the small vertical rear window, too. But never mind about that. =) Great show, as always.
That guy looked pissed off, like he wanted to punch Jay ...
A dodgy looking character ...
extremely unpleasant guest, i would have done another show without
+jean jacques kasel Jeez, some people are so quick to judge.. maybe he was nervous or is nervous around Jay and cameras.. I don't like being center of attention so I probably would have acted the same way. You never know he could be one of the nicest people ever and he was caught in a weird mood. All I'm saying is don't jump to conclusions on a person just based on one video because you don't know them..
He didn't look pissed off at all, just a normal neutral face.
Nah, I've got that impression from a lot of Americans ...it's just 'a thing' with some of them - he's not pissed off.
David Falconer Real shifty.
buy it Jay! buy it !!!
Amazing!
The kitten on the grill got along pretty well with the car's body line.
Well, Jay, I am glad you mentioned the Mannix roadster....I was a little bit disappointed that when you re-did your Toronado you did not do in in that style and retain front wheel drive....something for you to consider as a future project.....
Gorgeous.
Jay, I would like to see you do a walk-through of all the finished cars in your shop, kind of like an inventory tour. I don't think I've seen the cars from your last segment, with the Volt and Lambo or whatever that was.
And Gandini start the Bertone saga, such nice styling ideas with taste and gold number ratio.
Love those wheels.
Great video!
Thumbs up if you wait every Sunday for the upload!
Yeah, i use to get up early on mundays to watch uncle Jay. (before work) Now I'm staying up late every sunday. Sleeping in the next morning. Great show Jay, but my boss is pissed.
Thumbs up if you masturbate to the engine sounds.
That car resembles a 1971-1973 Ford Mustang fastback.
that guy is really wound up. "as long as you are insured"....he realized what he said immediately.
i feel like jay carried this one through pretty well.
I'd love to see an episode on those Chrysler 300 you have in the back ground I had a 63 300 with the 383 4 barrel white with light blue interior was a nice car do miss it sold in 86
Even I don't remember this one Jay! What I do remember though is the Frua bodied E-Type Jag. Saw one back in the 60's and nearly fell off my motorbike, it was so gorgeous. Surprised you haven't got one (hint...).
The Frua bodied E-Type was horrid.
I see the Espada but the cab and side windows... it’s almost a perfect match for an early 70’s Mustang fastback
cool car again Jay....
What a beautiful car
Another great video jay, any idea when we will see the Frazer-Nash?
The front end from the windshield forward looks somewhat like an early 70's Mustang front end when Ford increased the size of the Mustang to share the Torino platform. Ford take a design cue from it perhaps?
Jay you should do a Q n A for your fans. I know we wish we could ask you things. For i stance. I have been a fan for years and have always wondered if you have been in any accidents and I gotta think with all the access and love for motorcycles and cars, surely you have some tales to tell.
Never heard of it. But I like it
I was just looking at this car, the Parana. I think it inspired the shape of the DeLoren that was used in the movie , "Back to the Future".
The roller blinds near the rear end on the side, look like a typical design element of Renault of when I was small.
Isn't the dictator machine the Mercedes 600 Kompressor?
Very nice!!
It's like Corvette and Delorean had a baby.
Maxbooze Perzactly. lololol
What? No.
Well, aside from the obvious Espada connection, I notice that many contours, in all 3 dimensions, appear later on a Jag; The XJS.
This car is the 'missing link' between the 60's and 70's for Jag. And to think it's designer was so young at the time. It's quite a departure from anything Jag made prior. I like it, maybe even more that the Espada, and certainly more than 70's+80's Jags.
***** misundercarriage
Ooh, nice Espada!
13:55 that's why there are two dryer tube each side inside for the air cond. ...
interesting
thanks for sharing
Great episode...Not sure why you both said Marcello Gandini "was" a great designer. He is very much alive as of 2/24/23. Having just re-watched Joe Dante's great movie "Piranha", this was very timely.
Im in the same boat as all of you. Looking foward to see jays vids every Sunday. And to me sounds like this guy was a bit drunk or in bad health condition cause his breathing didn't sound right.
I like how he has a p1 and a MP4 sat in the front the garage
Nice 0ld car, Jay. I kinda sorta remember something about this car when I was younger, atleast that name "Pirana" means something to me. I don't remember exactly where though. Thanks again for all the Neat Car you show us, Jay. You're the Man! =)
Cool!
Jay I think you should have this car!
Jay, you should buy it, it is a very cool car
"Dictator machine" made me think of Grosser Mercs!
Body reminds me of 71-73 Ford mustang fastbacks.
American dude making fun of Italians for using automatics. I have seen it all now
I suspect that Malcom Sayer used the overall concept for the XJS, as the nose and hood is quite similar.
very interesting automobile! :)
