  • In this video I show you the easiest ways to correct HLG Footage (HLG3 to be exact) on Sony or any camera that can record HLG. I show you how to color-grade from scratch as well a applying corrective LUTs. I also give you a LUT for free because I'm a nice guy.
    Also, for all LUTS, it’s best to manually white balance and turn you detail down to -7 on PP10 if using a Sony Camera.

    Hi Mark, I recently bought my first camera, real camera, ZV E10 and have learnt heaps from your channel. I thought the standard camera settings looked good after using a phone camera for many years. I set up my ZV E10 as per your video and downloaded your LUT as well as a few other free LUTs online. WOW. What a difference. My videos look amazing without the skies being blown. Colour's look great, lots of detail still in the sky. Thank you for your great channel and sharing your knowledge.

    Thank you SO MUCH for creating the hlg3 LUT. I work mostly with hlg3 and have always corrected everything individually, but I just tried yours, and every clip that I tried it with burst into life instantly. Colours pop better and it just looks way more alive with so little to do. Many thanks.

    Hi Mark. I bought the Leeming lut for this camera and it is an amazing solution. However, I’ve been playing around with your lut also for non HLG3, and it works great removing the green tint. I also doubled your lut and it gives it a great look without doing much color grading. Thank you!

      if you are shooting at 24fps, 1/50 shutter speed, and your aperture is wide open (lowest it can go) - then you will have to increase your ISO to get the proper exposure. If you are finding the HLG3 requires your ISO to go too high - check out the leeminglut with the Cine2 profile. It will included in the same pack

    Hi Mark I used your Lut for my video 'Holiday 2023', and 'Scotland 2023'. Most of the footage was with the a6400 (same sensor as ZV E10), though a few scenes were with my wife's Canon G5xii. I am definitely a novice, though I noticed a marked improvement in tone and colours when I used your lut. I will need to practice with the zebra's more, and take care not to oversaturate in post, but I think most of what I produced appeared OK. All tips you provide are greatly appreciated and I may consider the Leeming Luts.

    Thanks for this great video. One thing I noticed when you were comparing the two LUTs on your outside shot was that the highlights in the upper left are blown out with the Leeming LUT whereas your LUT preserved them better and the overhead cable was visible. I don't know if that's just a function of my monitor hardware, 2017 5K iMac calibrated to a 6500k white point in the native Wide Gamut RGB profile, or something else but it gives me pause with the Leeming LUT because blown highlights are a pet peeve of mine.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 роки тому

      with the LeemingLUT, you can expose the highlights to 99 on the sky and that way you know they won’t be blown out. You may have to bring up the shadows if trying to preserve the highlights. But I will actually be doing a comparison with the LeemingLUT and Phantom LUTS (and my own) because you don’t need to expose to the right with Phantom.

    Love your videos. So informative and entertaining at the same time.
    Found you while doing research for the ZvE10 and have learned a ton, so thank you.
    I have a question. I added the ZVe10 to my setup to do multicam shoots along with my sony a6300. I was hoping to start using the HLG3 profile based on this video, but when I went to asetup the A6300 I noticed it doesn't have it. I need both cameras to match, with minimum to no color correction (not my strong point).
    Can you recommend another profile? or a workaround?
    I shoot indoors with lights so my lighting is consistent.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Mike

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 роки тому

      Thanks!! I would suggest using the Cine2 leeming lut for the a6300 - follow the instructions in the setup guide he has for the cine2 profile and then apply the appropriate LUT - it should be a pretty good match. you can also do the cine2 with the ZV-E10 and they should be even closer.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 роки тому

      And you might also have success with S-Log2 and the LeemingLUT for both - since you are inside with constant lighting. As long as you don’t do a ton of colour grading - you might be able to get away with the S-log2 in your environment. Try out both and see which is better for you (since buying the Sony Picture profile LUTS from LeemingLUT includes them all)

    Hey Mark, thank you for these videos - Ive been watching them all since deciding the ZVE10 was the camera for me - I'm a bit stuck and hoping you can help. How do I set white balance with a white card when using memory profiles? I've followed your setup guide for the camera so Ive got 4k 25p on 1, and 1080p 100p on M1, but when Im inside these profiles and I try and set the white balance the button is greyed out and it warns me that the feature is unavailable in custom profile. Am I missing something? If I switch just back to regular manual for example I can then set the white balance with a grey card, but as soon as I switch back into my custom profile I lose it. I know the video covers HLG3 more than HLG2, HLG1 and HLG, but here in my tests doing home recordings in low light and high light environments, HLG (no number), turned out better than HLG1, 2 and 3 in my opinion.
    Cine2 was also good, but the texture that HLG (no number) brought was really sensational.
    In my works I will intersperse some takes in HLG and others in HLG3 and draw real conclusions from day to day work, but for now I felt satisfied with pure HLG (no number)

    Awesome video! Quick question, I've always converted HLG footage by changing the color space override to REC 709 via settings. I've alway had the greenish tint. Is there a way to combat that or should I just change it via HDR tools/correction luts? Thank you!!

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 роки тому +2

      If you are grading yourself, I would use the HDR tools and use the HLG to 709 drop down like I did in the video. Using the color space override will give you that green image you are getting and even with a color checker in the shot, it will take a while to grade and results may not be optimal.
      If you are using a LUT designed for HLG like the LeemingLUT or the one I included - you don’t have to worry - just drop it in to the footage and you’re ok.

    There is one thing that I would like to ask. Did you have issue with reds on the skin? I’m not sure why but my face looks definitely too red when lut is applied.

    Awesome content. Love your videos. I have learned a lot. Thank you so much! Would the HLG color profile work for streaming/Zoom using the ZVE10 USBC/720p output (and applying LUT using OBS)?

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks!! A LUT through OBS should work, yes.

    • @jpawlowski
      @jpawlowski 2 роки тому +1

      The main problem with HLG is still that if you would just like to use it with OBS for streaming, you will still require a huge amount of light. In my case, that was not possible because proper lighting requires a lot of space which you usually don’t have in a regular desk corner. And no, even putting an Elgato Keylight at 100% will not be sufficient from my experience. Also, you will rarely have your Zoom call in a room with artificial lighting only which means you require even more light to compete with the natural light from outside.
      I ended up using the Cine2 Leeming LUT with Cine2 Profile. It will not be HDR obviously but still gives you a decent result where people on Zoom will still be very impressed by your appearance.

      @@jpawlowski thank you so much for this response. I appreciate you pointing out how much extra light it would require to pull this off and that a maxed out El Gato wouldn’t be enough. Will experiment with Cine2! Thank you again!!

    Thank you for the guide! If I applied your LUT as a Camera LUT, what Input should I use afterward when applying Custom LUT (that is creative LUT) in Final Cut Pro? Rec.2020, Rec.709, or another?

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  Рік тому

      You shouldn't need to apply any other lut - the footage should be converted for you and you can colour grade to taste

    Cheers, Mark. Used HLG3 after your ZV-E10 tips and now you even giving me a free LUT (which is perfectly fine for me). Just one thing: I noticed not a big difference between Colorspace Override on Rec. 2020 and the Camera Crisis-Lut (Colorspace Override off) Is it just my mac screen or are the differences really so marginal?

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 роки тому

      depending on your editor it could be different, but I provided a very neutral profile, so it should be similar to the color space override. 👍

      just set pp10 to hlg3 - and use that one. set set your zebras to 85% on your face (or whoever you are shooting). then apply the LUT in post. you can colour grade to taste after that. I usually just add a little contrast.

    Hi Mark. Would you still recommend HLG-3 for the zve-10 instead of slog3 which you made a video for the A7IV?

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, HLG3 for the ZV-E10. Slog3 works with the A7iv because of the 10-bit colour. The ZV-E10 has 8-bit so slog3 won’t grade well.

    Thank you so much for this video Mark! I do have one question though, you said in the video that the correct way to expose your videos with the leeming lut is to expose to the right, how about low light situations where I cannot leave the iso at base value? (I've read several places that ETTr only makes sense if the iso is at base)

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  Рік тому +1

      You can go up with the ISO a bit - I do it all the time. Try not to go past ISO 1000 or so. You can also use the ATHENA version of the Leeming LUT which is included with the regular LUT. This will let you expose the image not as far to to the right and give you a brighter image. You can do something like +1 open the M.M.

      @@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Wow, thanks for such a fast reply! You got yourself a new subscriber. I do actually have a few more questions now that I've played around with it a bit. Firstly, I use davinci resolve, and I do get that red tint. I find it really frustrating, since color grading something that doesn't look like it should, or how it will look when exported is really annoying and I was wondering if a solution would be to fix it in camera, so that it records less red? I did try to check the parade before applying the leeming lut, and red seems to be prevalent even before the lut, albeit a lot less noticeable.
      The other question is regarding color management, should I leave it at DavinciYRGB with Rec.2020(scene) as I've been experimenting with (I don't know if it actually has anything to do with the color mode BT.2020 in the camera, but it looks pretty normal to my eyes. Or should I go with some sort of color management?

    Hi Mark, great tutorial as always!! Bought the Leeming lut recently and tried it myself. Since I have a habit of capturing the color checkr before every shot. My question is, do I still need to do color correction after applying the lut? Because looking at the data (parade, vectorscope & etc) I notice it didn't exactly match. For example in Davinci, I left the 1st node untouched and on the 2nd I apply the Lut, on the 3rd I started doing all the necessary adjustment based on the color checkr. Should I be doing that or should I just straight go to grading after applying the lut? Beginner here and struggling 😢, Help

    • @user-vt6jk7kl4e
      @user-vt6jk7kl4e 4 дні тому

      Omg , same problem ! 😂 I was thinking straight applying lut on the footage itself and start grading using nodes after. Or was I wrong 😮

    • @wzloi6217
      @wzloi6217 4 дні тому

      Wouldn't it be redundant to do color correction after applying a color correction lut? 🤔 I'm not sure, I only use the lut then tweak a little after. Didn't have a color chart though.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  3 дні тому +1

      I apply the lut and then colour grade to tase. Usually I reduce the blacks a little and depending on the sony camera I remove a little red and blue. You method sounds fine to me!!
