Imagine you want to backup your phone on a cloud save only for it to say “You just bought our phone now pay an ongoing subscription to actually keep a backup of your stuff also fuck you.”
They've actually been doing stuff like this since they first entered the industry. Something like increasing costs on cartridges and refusing to switch from them due to their patent, the old CEO talking down to Playstation JRPG fans, and cancelling games like Star Fox 2 because it was so good that it made N64 games look bad.

Nintendo is the gaming equivalent to Disney to me. Pioneers in their respective mediums of entertainment, with the ability to create some of the most well designed, creative, and magical experiences possible through a massive lineup of iconic and beloved characters. But on the other hand, they constantly stomp down on passionate fans trying to understand and appreciate their work, have scummy and greedy market practices, have next to no interest in preserving important parts of their legacies, and don't get me started on that really recent bullshit. I'm still amazed that there are people that throw themselves in the crossfire for faceless billion-dollar corporations like these. I will always love what Nintendo has done for the games industry and what their games stand for, but you can love something and still point out its faults, because that means you care about them and want them to get better. They certainly have plenty of room to improve, and I hope they realize how to before it's too late.
Nintendo and Disney are both basically IP trolls at this point, hoarding "intellectual property" so they don't have to innovate much. We desperately need to reform IP law not just in America, but worldwide. Honestly, we need to go back to 28 year terms (or shorter than that) for copyright. Nintendo, Disney, and other corporations are certainly the worst offenders, but even if we take huge corporations out of the equation, these long terms fly in the face of the spirit of intellectual property law--the grandkids of innovators can profit for doing nothing, all in the interest, ironically, of promoting innovation.
What's more disturbing is that there's still people that will defend this company's actions. You can feasibly justify one or two things in this video or cite them as honest mistakes, but to pretend that all of these things don't add up to a company who revile a large portion of their most loyal fans is being what we like to call a Nintendrone. An insult that is very funny.
Surprisingly some of those who defend Nintendo make hacks for Nintendo games. It really baffles me. Intact I know one who wants to add drum to his hack to prevent real copys of the game from being made so it only runs on everdrives and emulation. All while claiming anyone who puts the game on a real cart is violating Nintendo and his copyright which is funny because he can not actually copyright his hack because it is Nintendos code.
If you ask me, this type of “why do other people do things I don’t like” always come from shitty boring people who had nothing better to do in their shitty boring life than dissing others to feel good about themselves.
Nintendo online is overall just stupid. Buying a 300 Euro console, paying for a Wifi connection, paying 60 Euros for the game itself and then still having to pay for the ability to actually play the game you just bought is just... to much. If a game is fullprice, I shouldn´t have to pay even more just so I can acces all the content the game has.
Yeah when it comes to older games its better to just emulate on PC or modded consoles and maybe collect if you can afford it It isn't just a Nintendo problem but an industry wide issue... of course Nintendo just wants you to buy the games over and over again
I've gotten copyright strikes from Nintendo for simply mentioning games that were on a Nintendo console. No game footage, no music. They weren't even games actually owned by Nintendo! But, I'm a minor league UA-camr so, my videos just go bye bye. My personal favorite was when they tried to claim a video tour of a Minecraft server I was hosting because the server was called "Minecraft Castlevania". They hit a sort of brick wall because, obviously, Konami owns Castlevania. LoL x_x
Nintendo hates emulation so much that you can't even play their **free** mobile games on PC emulators (I have low phone storage ok). Not sure how that affects them but I might be missing something I guess.
Well that's the thing, it doesn't affect them. At all. Their bottom line isn't impacted whatsoever by you using an emulator to play a free mobile game. The reason they're so heavy handed with emulation is to try and send a message to people that want to use them or want to host them on their sites
Gabe Newell Quote The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It's by giving those people a service that's better than what they're receiving from the pirates.
This happened to me today: I just bought the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Pass thinking I would get the 4x Bonus Points deal they're having until the end of April 2023, but since I bought a download code instead of eShop funds, I didn't get them. I called Nintendo to ask if I could have The rest of the reward points. The representatives I talked to at Nintendo pointed me to some terms that were only on one page of the web site (not the item's purchase page), and when I tried to ask what's the difference between buying a download code and buying eShop funds from a retailer, a supervisor said I was being "disrespectful." So yeah, Nintendo's evil. I'm not planning on buying any more Nintendo stuff that isn't pre-owned.
a more benevolent company / customer service would have given you the bonus points etc. even if the method use was different, there is a lesson of wisdom here for us to learn
Nintendo been this way as far back as the 80s where they had a huge iron grip over third-party support where not only they force the third license companies to make only 5 games a year for the NES but also told any gaming stores that if they sell any unlicensed Nintendo games they would stop sending them any more Nintendo items. That's why very little third license games on Sega Master System and killed Atari 7800 to a point Atari was making unofficial NES games under the TENGEN label games. This also the main reason that many third-party companies jump ship for the Sony PS1 over the N64 and never look back at Nintendo the same way again.
then why did make games for them if it was so bad + company's that where very prominant like Capcom still support Nintendo to this very day, im pretty sure they even made a couple of smash games
@@ThomastheDankEngine8900 the comment speaks of the NES regulation not how Nintendo is bad also wasn't the Iwata age a very long time for Nintendo? + i was responding to a comment, if i was talking about the video i would have made my own comment
My opinion on emulation is pretty simple. If you already own the game it's OK. If the original publisher of the game is not selling the game anymore or not selling a console it can be played on anymore, it is OK. Which, well, I will say melee 100% falls under. I genuinely think this is the most fair rule for emulation.
well i 100% agree you have to know that their has to be a legal definition in order for a company to agree which i would state: each console maker is defined in generations (each company is entitled to their own generation line)(each console is one generation)(handhelds have their own generation line)(hybrids count as both) anything released 2 generations ago is fair game + if the current system has no backwards compatibilety and it can reasoneble be expected that games from 1 generation ago aren't getting ported to the current system then it is allowed that that generation gets emulated
I love how sega and nintendo are like the exact opposite, sega loves their communities while nintendo actually hates their fans, segas games are mostly mediocre while nintendo makes some genuine bangers, sega allows their games to be on alot of different platforms while nintendo will sue someone for using an emulator etc
It's precisely because they know their games aren't great that they make sure not to piss off fans, if they started putting out tons of bangers and amassing good will, you'd probably see them getting greedy too.
And that's why I rip all of my Nintendo games myself, so I don't have them on my ass for downloading games from rom sites. I am against having current games on currently supported consoles on rom sites, because that DOES affect their bottom line. But if the games are no longer sold or no longer possible to play without emulation, it literally doesn't affect them all. Emulation is super important for preservation, so I am all for emulators for that
Nintendo's online components are so terrible that the only time I ever take my Switch off of airplane mode is to buy/download games that I've seen are on sale.
tbf, Nintendo has a reputation for shitting on fans. Whenever someone's making a fan project, they shut it down. Ironically, this actually happened with several Roblox games. A good few years back, there were these free to play Roblox games called Project Pokemon and Pokemon brick Bronze, which were basically just 3D Pokemon games on Roblox. Of course, Nintendo caught wind of their existence, and had the creators of the games shut them down. Same thing happened with a Pokemon fangame called Pokemon Uranium, which was available for free on Gamejolt, until (You guessed it) Nintendo found out about it and pulled the plug. It's sort of widespread knowledge that if you even so much as try to create a fangame or emulate an old game of theirs, they'll come down on you with extreme cruelty, and will accept no compromise. To them, you either pay them for their games and consoles, regardless of how old they are, or you don't get anything
Yeah they seem to not understand that their brand having a high reputation and having happy fans is way more valuable than the short term revenue of getting royalties from fan games, or money from lawsuits
I was a Nintendo player a long time ago. They began their shit a long time ago. I no longer buy their consoles. I refuse to touch their games. I avoid Nintendo like the plague. I simply don't want to support that company directly or indirectly. I even refuse to play Nintendo games with friends when they want to. Heck, I even won't play Nintendo games with my sister's kids. Sure they can play them. But I won't join them. I'm not forcing them not to. I'm just... not interested. If they want me to join them in games on the sofa, make it any other console. Just not Nintendo. They quickly learned this even though I haven't told them. They figured out that I'm "boring" when the Nintendo console is on but not if any of their other consoles is on (Xbox, PlayStation). They don't know I'm an active Nintendo refuser. They just figured that I love playing with em when it's not Nintendo. They haven't asked me why yet and It'll remain that way. Once they ask why and are old enough to understand national economy I'll explain. Until then they can enjoy their Nintendo fun in their own way. I'm not taking that away from them.
As a Nintendo fan this hurts so bad, knowing that some people working in the company don't get their say on anything. I bet there is some good people there, but the executives are shutting them up

I don't know if anyone remembers this, but I heard a lot of things about how Nintendo hated things like Blockbuster because it allowed people to rent games and Nintendo can't make money off that. As in they padded out games like Pokemon and did a bunch of other stuff to undermine Blockbuster. I think they even tried to get a lawsuit involved.
The shutdown of Another Metroid 2 Remake is another fan-game PR disaster that really stings. At least it's sorta justified in that they were already remaking Metroid 2, but still, the passion behind that game was palpable. I also think Pokemon Uranium was another high profile fan game they DMCA'd?
I still got to play am2r and I even seen there be fan updates for it. As in, people besides the original am2r creator were adding on to it, and I've even seen a multiplayer mod of it. So there's that at least
the PG circuit worries me more than it gives me hope because i fear they will use it as an excuse to shut down more tournaments, in addition to running without basic QoL mods like UCF
This is a company that I wanted to support for life. Ever since they started sending out cease and desist letters to their biggest fans, I've decided to end my support for Nintendo. Such a shame that a creative company really hates their supporters!
One time at E3 (2017/2018 I believe?) Reggie, in a crowd of people demo-ing Mario Tennis Aces, asked everyone to shout out what they wanted next from Nintendo. I hopelessly shouted "F-Zero," and another hopeless attendee shouted "Mother/Earthbound." Reggie looked in our directions, closed his eyes and shook his head. We remain hopeless to this day. Not gonna lie: I sometimes wish Nintendo would sell off the franchises they don't care about anymore to other companies to do great things that they (Nintendo) won't.
Nintendo has actually partnered and sponsored smash tournaments before and it actually never really did anything to increase prize money for the players or the quality of the event (Genesis 7 being the first that comes to mind). Melee players say they actually hate when Nintendo sponsors their tournaments because it means Nintendo will inforce rules that actively make the experience worse such as not letting players use USF or emulate it on Wii for a more stable experience and quality on monitors. They just use it as free advertising and to make it seem like they care but they actually don't.
The melee tournament situation was so dumb it hurt. From what I believe in order to emulate on dolphin you need the actual game files meaning you either had to find a rom or actually own the game (I think we all know which option the people who played in tournament used)
Nintendo has always been an incredibly arrogant company. This is the same company that turned down Sony's proposition for a partnership (creating their biggest market rival), the same company that laughed in the faces of Microsoft when they proposed buying them out, and the same company that overreacts if anyone dares to talk about their IP's in any medium they don't have direct control of. Sometimes they've done amazing things and set many trends in the industry, and other times their own hubris has almost been their downfall - and could be again in the future.

Something else that Nintendo changed due to use of their brand was SuperMarioLogan. I think it was early 2020 or 2021, but im not sure. Nintendo had sued SuperMarioLogan for use of their characters, and they had to change all the plushies, thumbnails and the channel appearance. "Nintendo is a bad company that makes good games". Hit the nail on the head with that one. Their hardware is pretty good as well (not in technical capacity, but in actually satisfying the needs it is presented for). They are the most customers-disrespecting gaming company though, and that is an astonishing achievement considering that there are a lot greedier companies in terms of lootboxes, microtransactions etc. Wish there wasn't such a "choose your own poison" mentality necessary when it comes to big gaming brands, tbh. Would recommend the Switch Lite to anyone looking for a good mobile indie machine, though, that is what is worth encouraging.

They should be forced to sell the games or give customers a way to buy it officially if they are allowed to sue for emulation. If I can't pay you to get a game, then it's YOUR fault and people should be allowed to emulate
This is a really good summation of the situation. I appreciate your perspective on things. It is unfortunate when a company has to crack down on fan games when they secretly think it's cool, but Nintendo goes out of it's way to hunt people down for pennies. That's probably the thing I hope you talk about in the future, concerning how fan projects that might get the okay from a company, but later have to be cease and desisted otherwise they lose the copyright.
12:27 I am still convinced that if Nintendo partnered up with content creators, the Wii U would have been much more of a commercial success than it became. Imagine if pewdiepie back in the days was playing on the Wii U and singing its praises, he could have helped sell hundreds of thousands of consoles just from how insanely large his fanbase was. By the end of 2014, pewds had over 33 million subs. Even if only 0.1% of his subscriber base bought a Wii U, that's still over 300 000 consoles. It's so painful how ass backwards Nintendo can be, it's so frustrating seeing how sh!1 they are as a company compared to how amazing they can be as a developer.
I'd say to grossly oversimplify it; they've been lazily coasting on a generation of nostalgia while constantly overreaching their legal boundaries. I was a fan of them back when the gamecube was their newest release, but when they started hanging the smash tournaments I've turned my back on them since.
i am so mad how nintendo shits on fan made games, such as pokémon brick bronze. that game was my childhood. however i am glad that sega is really in touch with the community, and helped the creation of a fan made sonic game on roblox.
It's sad how people just take this total abuse and yet don't care. Then they use a stupid response like "oh well it's not the devs fault that the legal team is so bad", which is just wrong
It’s funny to me how people call Sony anti consumer when Nintendo exists. Not saying Sony is pro consumer but definitely aren’t the worst of the big 3 towards customers.
Some more stuff you might’ve forgot to add, they’re also shutting down the Eshops for the DS AND WiiU and for what? The “cycle”…you won’t even be able to get those games back on the switch and that just makes it all the more disappointing. 😐
The problem nintendo has with emulation and fan games is that they're afraid of their ips becoming generalized and losing them. So they have to protect them because if they allow people to freely create content surrounding their games that isn't made by them, then it could jeopardize their rights to some of the characters if someone legitimately did make a game using their characters and likeness and selling it for profit, if they then rightfully tried to sue, it could result in that character becoming generalized and free use thus crumbling their market on exclusive rights. (For instance if this happened to mario or pokemon becoming free use it could legitimately destroy their company financially because of all of the people who could now use these characters)
These games are 30 years old. Nintendo is doing this because they want people to buy new games instead of playing retro ones. (unless you pay 50 dollars a year, of course)
Online in games (im pretty sure) is entirely implemented by the developer and it's on them to set up servers for it which is one of the reasons its ridiculous to need to pay to play online, but it means if a game has bad online, that's a problem with the game's online servers, not the platform because "xbox live" for example now is basically just the term used for the subscription because if you're not playing a Microsoft developed game, the online could be hosted by the developer, or any hosting company.
Important: I know this is an old video posted a year ago, but the new bs Nintendo is gargage. My main example is pointcrow. People will pirate 3ds and Wii U games because the game price will increase for the two consoles because the shop will close 3ds consoles prices are growing nice going Nintendo what a slap in the face
Thing is, their bad reputation comes almost exclusively from bad decisions by the higher-ups in the company. Nintendo's game designers and developers are INSANELY good at their jobs. They very clearly know what they're doing. There is no better way to show this than with Super Mario Sunshine. That game was obviously VERY rushed. It is full of bugs, and full of bad stages and gameplay elements that the developers simply didn't have time to polish. But despite all of that, they still managed to make Super Mario Sunshine extremely fun. Because they understood that under the time frame, they NEEDED to make sure the movement system was as fun as possible. Which is exactly what they did, they made sure that Mario's movement was fully realized and polished. The simple act of moving around in that game, is very fun. Nintendo's higher-ups are simply out of touch. If it weren't for their immensely skilled game designers and developers, I have no doubt in my mind that they would've gone bankrupt a LONG time ago.

No F zero no Mario no donkey Kong they spit on old fans every chance they get. * This last Nintendo direct was evidence of that
Man I'm so glad you made this video. I really love so many nintendo IPs but with the age of the switch I just hate them as a company and refuse to support them, and spread word of their anti-consumer practices as much as I can. I can't get over how much it hurts that for example as much as I love the zelda and splatoon IPs I will never be able to enjoy playing them again because of the lack if accessibility options provided by nintendo. Nintendo doesn't make a version of the switch to cater to the part of their audience that wants a higher end stationary experience over a low powered more restricted mobile one, and before it can be said that that's not what the switch was built upon they've had 6 years to create variants and or improve upon the switches design. However nintendo still hasn't taken any action to include the vast majority of the gaming world into their games, so until nintendo grows up as a company and stops being a greedy, anti-consumer, backwards company I'll just sit here in sadness at all the opportunities nintendo doesn't take to improve themselves as a company.
I have 2 fangames in mind that Nintendo shot down : am2r a fangame of the classics metroid and I believe the other one is called pokemon uranium. Those are both fangames that took years to develop and were made without any revenues, the games were free. This is dumb and by thinking about it two seconds this would have been a great publicity for Nintendo games or even ideas to take inspiration from.
Look at Pokemon. Pokemon games has where you could store Pokemon for free without expansion for storage. Another thing trading Pokemon used to be done without Nintendo Subscription. Far as I can tell it really only applies to trade in games because purchases can be done with internet connection. Thankfully that the yearly subscription is $20 but there's other way micro transactions to occur. Skyrim sucks without modding. I really wanted to play Midnight Suns and was waiting for it on the Switch. When I heard that Nintendo wasn't going be a platform I gave up on the company. I may save up for Steamdeck and since my desired games are on there. I want to play Baldur Gate 3, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. And currently way on Swansong for the Switch but decided go PC route.

If it's too late
Call Nintendo a J*p

I understand all these decisions from a business point of view. Nintendo is a business not our friend.
I shouldn't have to pay a subscription fee to play 20-40 year old games that I could buy 1-2 generations ago.
Yeah when it comes to older games its better to just emulate on PC or modded consoles and maybe collect if you can afford it
It isn't just a Nintendo problem but an industry wide issue... of course Nintendo just wants you to buy the games over and over again
LoL x_x
Wow, that's amazingly sh!1 even for Nintendo standards
Nintendo hates emulation so much that you can't even play their **free** mobile games on PC emulators (I have low phone storage ok). Not sure how that affects them but I might be missing something I guess.
Well that's the thing, it doesn't affect them. At all. Their bottom line isn't impacted whatsoever by you using an emulator to play a free mobile game. The reason they're so heavy handed with emulation is to try and send a message to people that want to use them or want to host them on their sites
@@htwo1 apperenrly there is a reason why nintendo is like this

The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It's by giving those people a service that's better than what they're receiving from the pirates.

Unfortunately Nintendo doesn't agree with you. They want sites that host emulators or roms to be afraid
well i 100% agree you have to know that their has to be a legal definition in order for a company to agree which i would state: each console maker is defined in generations (each company is entitled to their own generation line)(each console is one generation)(handhelds have their own generation line)(hybrids count as both) anything released 2 generations ago is fair game
+ if the current system has no backwards compatibilety and it can reasoneble be expected that games from 1 generation ago aren't getting ported to the current system then it is allowed that that generation gets emulated
Me from the future ... They f*cked it up 🥲
And that's why I rip all of my Nintendo games myself, so I don't have them on my ass for downloading games from rom sites. I am against having current games on currently supported consoles on rom sites, because that DOES affect their bottom line. But if the games are no longer sold or no longer possible to play without emulation, it literally doesn't affect them all. Emulation is super important for preservation, so I am all for emulators for that
I'd imagine that's a pain unless you ripped VC files from the wii or wii u
This happened with a minecraft mod called pixelmon (a mod that adds pokemons and pokemons mechanics to minecraft) too
Yeah they seem to not understand that their brand having a high reputation and having happy fans is way more valuable than the short term revenue of getting royalties from fan games, or money from lawsuits

If Nintendo had it their way, the internet wouldn't exist at all.
Sega still does what Nintendon't, by giving a shit about their fans.
"Nintendo is a bad company that makes good games". Hit the nail on the head with that one. Their hardware is pretty good as well (not in technical capacity, but in actually satisfying the needs it is presented for).

1:12 when the gamecube originally came out, the price was $100, and that one is $70, i say that's a good deal
One example is that Nintendo didn’t let twitch streamers play Age Of Calamity when the game had released in their country
Important: I know this is an old video posted a year ago, but the new bs Nintendo is gargage. My main example is pointcrow. Please for the love of god respect someone rather than take away most of their videos. I was lucky to have recorded one of the video, for that got removed from UA-cam even though it was Vinland gameplay. I really hope they can change.
Moon channel explained about the situation very well which led to pointcrow unlisting his video
You forgot to mention that Nintendo killed the ENTIRE GilvaSunner channel
Do you realize that his music's already been reuploaded and somehow Nintendo can take down the reuploaded music mainly because it was a person that was impersonating them. The only frustrating part about it is the UA-cam bot that's defending it
im sorry but if your just porting music to your channel than im not gonna be mad when they take you down
@@stijngryp2589 I myself used Nintendo music but I always put a disclaimer on the description of my videos as always.
@@M64bros aslong you don't port the music its fine
ive never seen Nintendo take down remixes
Silva right he has a shitpost channel with the same exact name so when Nintendo was after him they should have seen that channel and i mean it has Nintendo artwork
so like Nintendo if they where malicious they would take him too but they don't because he fits under "remix"
@@stijngryp2589 true. However there is also another thing that's confusing. Since people re-upload his music I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't taken down the reuploads?
Saying that it wouldn’t be the last time Nintendo would shut down a smash tournament was such a read
Nintendo switch is garbage lmaooooooooooooo 😂
Well the smash tournament deserve to be shut down after being exposed for having p3dos and pr3dators in it
@@M64bros cope lol
@@SwitchSucksAss Answered your own response didn't you?
@M64bros Keep coping that crash team rumble isn't coming to the Nintendo switch hahahaha 😂😂😂😂😂
Emulation is the last resort as many or few modern games today kinda crap and meh, so I still enjoyed playing old games instead of being pissed off with certain games having overpriced DLC or probably trash stuff they put in and I gotta admit that emulation is still amazing and beauty...
I wish I was able to cease and desist Miyamoto's life to free the souls of the workers
You forgot to mention that BOTW2 hasn't released yet
@@stijngryp2589 I want the good game to be out already, how is that not clicking? Quite frankly I want BOTW3 by Christmas, and I want Nintendo to atone for their sins of not doing that.
Tears of the kingdom would propably be bad
@@bailujen8052 it had better not be, especially because it's probably going to launch alongside the Switch2. And I'm not fiscally responsible enough not to buy it!
It is hard when emulation dies and when companies try to take it down. You then have to have the hardware or buy it online or retro store. I think it's good to support your local retro shops.
Nintendo with NES Emulators: WHAT...... YOU CAN BUY THE GAME IN EBAY OR SMTH
I don't know what you're thinking by saying Nintendo makes good games. They haven't made a good game since 2017 or so. Breath of the wild was a Wii U game *so was the Mario kart game they're still operating on. No F zero no Mario no donkey Kong they spit on old fans every chance they get. * This last Nintendo direct was evidence of that
thats why i will always pirate and always endorse pirating nintendo games they only have themselves to blame
Why do you keep using Dunkey clips lol
Anyone knows what the name of this Mario game is 6:15
super mario flashbacks, it's a fan game
@@AzamMujahidProductions thx
Remeber when Valve allowed a community recreation of half life 1 called black mesa to be added. To their own store front lmao
You are gonna need a hell of a lot more than thirteen minutes to discuss even half of what is wrong with Nintendo.
Are you saying that the person you mention from the Wii U add, is also Steve from stranger things?
