How I installed my Starlink dish to clear the obstructions

  • This is a solution I came up with to extend my Starlink satellite dishy past the obstructions above my house for my installation. We've lived in a rural area with extremely poor and spotty internet service for the past 3 years. After waiting over a year, we finally received a 2nd generation Starlink! I was trying to to use the J arm / mount from my previous satellite installation but came up with a better idea that worked for our location. We also talk about what surprised us upon receiving our Starlink.

    Oh man! We have been hoping for this to reach us since it came out. Our area is still on the waiting list. We have "Line of Sight" internet which is barely better than your old service.

    Ouch! Ordered mine October 5, 2022 ... got it October 8, 2022. I've only used it on the terrace with way too many obstructions, but got a max of 160m downlink, with an average around 100m with latencies between 20ms to 40ms ... when I can see a satellite. Not at all disappointed, given the suboptimal location for the first go. It was a good OOBE, but definitely need to go higher.

      Antenna & their router - $599, then $110 per month. Once you get an account you can select and buy the mounting hardware you will need for your application. Mine is still on the lawn but will go on the roof eventually. Check out JChristina on UA-cam for a wealth of Starlink info.

      It's night and day difference! The monthly cost is the same as our old unreliable internet, minus the bad customer service 😁 $150 CAD / month.

    How was after installation?
    Still get the obstruction and how is the speed ?

    • @Sum4Seb
      @Sum4Seb  8 місяців тому +1

      Hi, no obstructions at all and the speed has been good. There's a slight slow down around dinner time when kids are back from school but still able to watch anything in 4k uninterrupted. Usually get between 120-250 speeds depending on weather. Winter ❄️ storms are pretty bad here but we rarely lose signal. Just wish it was cheaper.

      @@Sum4Seb Glad to Hear that. I bought a starlink cost me about $3000 with one year subscription. Too damn expensive but i utterly in need of that speed since my country has poor internet service.
      For the past month i struggled with obstruction problem it says i get obstructed every 6-7 minutes. Which is very annoying while streaming videos or playing online games. It keeps disconnecting every 7 minuets for one minute then comes online again. The speed overall is great if you downloading content or browsing but not streaming or gaming
      So today after i watched your video i improvised and raised my dish about 2 meter up my roof although no trees or tall buildings in desert areas lmao.
      Snow and clouds no issue there just dust storm which happens rarely.
      Anyways i raised my dish up about 2 meter making sure north has clear view from any obstruction. And there you go after 6 hours collecting data the obstruction is Zero. Finally. Back with gaming and streaming like a charm .
      Your video helped me alot . Thanks ❤️❤️

      @@0oTornado That's fantastic news! Very happy you were able to improve it, disconnect every 7 minutes would be extremely annoying. We game occasionally and our latency is actually pretty good considering. That works out to about the same price as what we paid because we had to buy that adapter for the pole. Enjoy!

      Hi Gilles, there's been a few minor (very short, less than 5 seconds) interruptions and 2 major ones due to weather over the last 3 months but overall 100% better than the previous ISP we had and worth every penny even though it's pricey. Let us know if you have any other questions. Have a good evening.

    How its going ? Obstructions? Dropouts? What app shows? do your mobile works now thru SLwifi?

    • @Sum4Seb
      @Sum4Seb  Рік тому +2

      Hi, it's been great so far. An upgrade in every aspect compared to our old service. There is the occasional drop out but it's short and service resumes by itself. We get quite a bit of snow here and the heated feature works great. We probably average about 180 down and 11 up for speeds but have gotten up to 328 D and 23 up. During peak hours sometimes it will go down between 30 - 50 but still perfectly useable for us. We have 0 obstructions and the app has had a few updates and works as it should. I've setup my own wifi and it works great. Good luck

      @@Sum4Seb Thanks! Why speeds are affected? Big city close by? Are your mobile able to use wifi calling and use SL internet? Last month's SL realigned some dishes is it same for you? ))

    • @Sum4Seb
      @Sum4Seb  Рік тому +1

      @@tvguide4khv We're not sure why such a big disparity in speed and you can't really reach their non existent customer support so you never really get an answer. I've only tried WiFi calling once and it worked great in HD and no lag. We can stream multiple devices in 4k without issue. We are not heavy users so our experience might differ from others

      You got a lot more than we got with our Starlink! No adapter anymore offered. No cover. Cable shortened from 75’ to 50’.

    That's A LOT for temporary. A sandbag on the base would have been cheaper, faster and simpler

    • @Sum4Seb
      @Sum4Seb  Рік тому +1

      Hi, the only thing that was temporary was the mounting to the mast since we were waiting for the adapter in the mail. Sand bag on the roof would not have cleared the many obstructions hence why we did it this way. This was all explained in the video... Thanks for your insight and have a great day.
