  • High-speed internet is essential for remote work, yet many of the country's most beautiful places don't have broadband options easily available. This week we explore one promising off-grid option and see if it works for me on a wooded lot in upstate New York. Starlink is the low-orbit satellite internet service from Elon Musk and Space X. This video explores if this promising service will work from me. Your own experience may vary. This is my unboxing, review and honest experience.

Do another scan from your roof. You will be 15-20' higher. Use a Starlink pole mount with a long pole and J-mount. That will get a little more height. You dishy will probably face north like mine. I am in the country like you surrounded by trees but I am high enough on the roof and get no obstructions. Been using Starlink since January.

Good idea Al Hum. Unfortunately, the northern trees are very close to my house and quite tall. The pole could work and others have suggested it. I'll definitely consider this advice. Thank you!

As your mount the dish slightly off the ground line of sight is going to exponentially open up. Get an A-frame ladder and put it smack in the middle of the parking lot and then try the app again. This may reveal certain height that you need to get the dish in which case you can use a pole tape mounting solution.

Thanks Jonnie, they won't let me return it since it's been 30 days. I may take it on the road with me and see if I can get it to work that way in the future :) Thanks for the compliment. I'm working on my content. I hope it keeps getting better. Talk soon!

Stick the antenna on a pole until it clears the obstructions. Would need to be somewhat high, but not as high as the trees. Still it's easily doable without cutting down anything. Only downside is the aesthetics of having a pole mounted to the roof/side of house.

Interesting Idea. May be worth a try. I think I'm more interested in taking it semi-mobile in the months ahead. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Thanks for the advice and for watching my video, Brian!

Thanks for doing the post. We live in the Idaho mountains on an off-grid ranch - our Dishy unit is scheduled to arrive later today, (8/23), our only other option is HughesNet and it’s terribly slow and expensive. We don’t have cell service or cable or dsl. We also have tall pines around our geodesic dome and I ordered the pole mount and pole but they haven’t shipped the pole yet. Going to try placing it on the roof without the pole for now and see what happens. I am cautiously optimistic.

Hi there Grey Ghost Ryders. I really hope it works out for you. I have other options so while I was disappointed I didn't feel it was necessary to spend the extra time, cost and effort to install a tall pole or trim my trees. But in your case, I'd do everything I could to make it work. Let me know how it goes, I'll be rooting for you!

Hey there gray ghost. You must live near us in St Maries. We are having a terrible time getting internet/cell service. Hughesnet is our LAST resort for the reasons you mentioned. Let me know how Starlink works out for you.

When did you put your deposit down? When did it arrive? Been waiting since early March. Thanks

Hi Steven. I ordered on June 1st and received it on the 11th. Very fast. I wonder if that's because I am in an area with fewer users or an area they are somehow prioritizing? I wish you the best of luck and hope it works out for you. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Great editing , great video . Shitty about the trees . Do u think it would b good for a traveling bus ? Thanks for sharing 😊🙏🏼

Hi HOPE. Currently you can change the service address on an active account and if there is availability at the new address it will start within 15 minutes or so. If you are staying put each stop for a while this might work but no guarantee. You will always need cellular hotspot as backup. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@HOPEbus In my next video a briefly talk about my Tmobile and AT&T hotspots but its different in every area. I suggest maxing out hotspot data on your main phone and adding a dedicated hotspot on a second carrier if you can afford it.

Were you able to do a speedtest?

Hi there. I got 47mbps down but it lost connection before I could test the upload speed. I expect I would get better numbers from a higher position or if I installed a pole as many suggest. I didn't include in the video because I didn't trust the number. Thanks for your question!

Sigh. I found my dream home at a great deal, and am thinking about putting an offer in tomorrow, but I’m a remote developer and absolutely must have high speed internet. Of course cable isn’t offered at this place…and it’s surrounded by damn trees. Plus it’s on a lake, so cutting them down isn’t an option due to regulations.
It’s like seriously? Am I really going to have to turn down this once in a lifetime opportunity because of friggin internet in 2021? Seriously?!

It's tough. Have you checked out wireless service? Any low or mid band 5g towers nearby? Also some folks are having success putting dishy on a big pole on the roof or flagpole on your property.

I know they are launching "dark" versions now that can't be seen by the naked eye but astronomers still report that they can be seen by the telescopes they use.
