Fantastic well done, i did it while touring last summer and its every bit as incredible as its reputation suggests. My top tip is to descend to Bormio then theres a continuous cycle path all the way to Lake Como which is just a joy to ride, then you can climb Passo dello Spulga (if stelvio is the king of climbs, spulga is the queen) 30km long and 51 hairpins, not quite as steep but very unique and less known so way less traffic.

    Great video!
At 7.57 the round building is the "Tibethütte" where we stayed after riding up from Tirano on our recumbents in 1994. Thanks for bringing back those memories.
Of course, the next morning we woke up to 15 cm (6") of snow and an absolutely miserable descent back down the way we'd come until we turned towards Santa Maria...

@@SturgecyclingAll in all it was a great trip. We met up in Bern, me coming by train from Sweden and Richard flying in from D.C. We quickly decided to aim for a "tour around Switzerland on the outside" since everything was so expensive on the inside. So we went southwest, crossed the southern end of the Jura mountains, then south past Annecy before heading east to Beaufort and the first serious pass - Cormet De Roselend. Then down to Bourg St Maurice and then an attempt at crossing into Italy via the Petit St Bernard pass. Except that this was late May 1994 and that pass was not yet open! But we heard that they were going to open it by the next day so we decided to gamble and climb up anyway. It wasn't yet open but the snow clearing machine was going back and forth so we pushed our bikes through the slush as the machine was turning around for another pass.
So we were in Italy and down in the Aosta valley the cops stopped us, thinking that we'd somehow ridden our bikes through the Mt Blanc motorway tunnel (bicycles absolutely not allowed) and they couldn't believe that we'd come across the pass - "that's closed!" The crossing of northern Italy started out nice but when we hit the roads north of Milano, it was the first lovely weekend of the summer and the all the Milanese in their cars were on their way towards the big lakes and the traffic got quite unpleasant, despite us often being able to go faster than the cars (or BECAUSE we could go faster!). So we headed towards the Alps. I had an idea to go up the Bernina pass from Tirano towards St Moritz but Rich wanted us to aim higher, so we rode up to Bormio (where we had lunch of two pizzas each!) and then continued up the Stelvio from the "off" side. We made it to the top just as the sun (and the temperature!) was dropping really low and Rich insisted that we go to the very highest of the hostels - the Tibethütte. And next morning, we were snowed in!
The ride down in snow, sleet and eventually just 0 degree rain was absolutely miserable. And a bit down after the Umbrail pass, we saw the Alpenrose gasthaus where we had lunch and thawed out before continuing. If we'd known about that place the night before we could have just dropped down to there in the evening and not seen any snow.
The rest of our "loop" had to be cut short because all the fun high passes were closed again! We got on buses and trains to Andermatt but both the Furka and Gotthard were closed so we dropped down the Teufelsbrücke and rode until Wassen where the traffic got too heavy so we jumped on a train and looped back via Luzern to Interlaken where we finally could do some riding in nice weather back to Bern.
A total of about three weeks. Late May and early June. That big snowstorm actually hit us in June! Don't trust the weather in the Alps.

@@TorstenLif ah this makes me want to get back out on some travels! I also found not to trust the weather in the alps! Great stories and memories :)
