Shogo, I recently bought a katana off of Hanbon forge, the scabbard is very stiff. This makes it very hard to unsheathe. Is there any way to make it less stiff? I tried using my thumb and it really hurts.

I am so very grateful to be studying iaido. I " stumbled upon it" 3 years ago in a small dojo tucked away in my home town of Schenectady New York. I may never experience going to Kyoto, but I share some of the pure pleasure of training with an iaito and delving into the culture it represents. I deeply appreciate the sacrifices and devotion those who have brought this sword art across the globe, even to towns like mine. It is pure joy to train ! I support you in your vision, Shogo!

I am used to western swordsmanship, but I am really interested in the japanese medieval times, since it is such a great inspiration. Just started Musashi by E. Yoshikawa and already read the book of the five rings :)

Hey Shogo, congratulations on this step towards your dream!
Since you mentioned expanding internationally, I would love if you ever visited Brazil (the second largest japanese population, last only to Japan itself) to compare what is taught as 'japanese culture' over here. My intuition is that it probably resembles early 1900's Japan, because it was around that time the majority of japanese people emigrated from japan to Brazil and estabilished communities.

This is amazing, I've always been interested in Japanese culture, especially in samurai and shinobi and I've always wanted to learn more about Musashi's Niten Ichi Riyu or "The Way of the Two Heavens", his twin sword weilding style. I've somewhat mentally trained myself in it. And in fact, just today I received his Book of the Five Rings, I idolize Musashi both as a skilled warrior and a philosopher. Philosophy and warfare, a shame these two have become so distant since the times of Sun Tzu and Miyamoto Musashi. Much love from America to Japan and the rest of the world, may the Gods smile upon you.

@@LetsaskShogo weaponism shows lots of sparring. I don't believe you gain the skills unless you train timing, distance, reaction ect..

Does Yushinkan engage in sparring? How many kenjutsu (not kendo) gekken/gekiken matches has he won against masters of other styles? It's fine that he can cut a standing target with two blades. Great. But is that enough to call him a "modern day Musashi"? Who gave him this dubious title? Himself? You, Shogo? Such boasting is not becoming of a kenjutsu sensei, especially if there is nothing to make the comparison substantial.

Why not "Modern-day Yagyu Munenori" given the roots of Yushin-Ryu? "Modern-day Miyamoto Musashi" seems somewhat disingenuous/disrespectful to the lineage.

Considering they regard themselves as an improvement on Yagyu Shinkage Ryu, I don't think invoking the Yagyu in this case would be any more respectful or appropriate than Musashi.
