I cannot believe the ant that got to the top of the cone did not get an Emmy. The dedication, the effort, fighting thousands of other ants to get to the top of that specific ice cream cone to assert dominance.

I’m a stills photographer and was blown away by the camera work in the entirety of BCS but this had me breathless. For those who don’t know, the closer you get, even with specialized lenses, the thinner your depth of field (amount of distance that is in focus) becomes. Taking even a still photo and nailing the focus in these shots is extremely difficult, because on top of the DoF issues, you lose light at that level of lens extension to a massive degree. I continue to revisit this shot as an example of cinematic excellence and even when I’m just trying to drop a link to another photog friend I have to watch it all just to try and wrap my head around it. BCS is one of the best pieces of art to ever hit any screen.
@@kevinfj1861 That was one of the nicest moments in the series, it really showed that Jimmy is a good person and wanted to help the old woman, even if it meant he would be hated by the other old ladies.

To me the ants represent the criminals coming up from the underworld and slowly starting to tear jimmy down It's like the snowball effect. Once jimmy comes into contact with the first ant (tuco) other ants (nacho, lalo, gus, walter) start to follow and begin eating away at the ice cream until nothing is left. This shows that the criminal world has become inescapable for Jimmy and he can no longer reach the heights he dreamed of by playing straight
No BTS Video but I remember they talk about the inspiration and ideas for the scene, as well as some details on how they filmed it on the BCS Insider Podcast episode 503
So powerful with a big meaning. That shit was Just perfect. Still on season 5, what a great series. So many details. A Full plate for those who love character development
I know this is kind of obvious but i like how in the first scene it’s obviously takes place sometime in the morning and there are not too many people out and about and traffic is pretty light, then in the next scene where the ice cream has melted, it’s clearly sometime in the afternoon when traffic and pedestrian activity are at the highest for the day, always loved that little detail
Mint chocolate chip ice-cream is the best ice-cream there is, for it to be aired on this show? And to be Saul's favourite ice-cream? This is the icing on the cake. Bravo, vince!
It’s a common misconception that the ice cream fell onto the floor, the proper term would be ground, or sidewalk. Yet another testament to the genus that is Vince Gilligan. Bravo, Vince.
Even if you don't fully grasp its meaning (altought is pretty basic IMO) this scene has so much beauty. The music, the cinematography... Even the ants are perfect
This is one reason why this show is iconic. That shot probably took all day, Also, all the other closeups and POV shots (inside an electric meter, a gas cap POV, etc, etc, etc. All these special extra shots, that are EXTREMELY technical ; show crazy dedication to the art ! Bravo BCS !
3:00 I love spotting new cars in BCS, 2nd gen chrysler 300 (2011-2023) and a newer toyota tacoma, not sure of the model year, but definitely older than 2004.
No one mentioned that the ice cream in question here was used again in season finale about jimmy deal 7 year prison deal that he has weekly ice chocolate mint ice cream.
Ants were great in this scene. Their acting are impeccable. Seriously, Only Better Call Saul & Breaking Bad would pull off these type of cold opening. Bravo Vince & Peter.
I don’t understand why they used newer, more modern cars in this scene. Some of them only came out years after BCS takes place. Or did they film on public streets?
I checked out this season from the library. The blue ray had the regular episode and a commentary one. They gave kudos to the editor and the guy putting the music to the piece. What i remember, they said how some find a good idea and its great, then it starts attracting more more to it until it becomes filth and carnage.
well this can be considered a symbol of sorts about the ''team work'' in nature, the ice cream is like a sweet glue for the ants, but working together can overpower and eat it, another memorable scene of this franchise that passes to the story, although wasting a very good ice cream, HA HA HA.
I think the ice cream was the methamphetamine business and money. Little by little everyone wants to get a little bit of him, exactly as Jimmy tries to at the beginning before having to give him up. Perhaps a metaphor for how he tried to get into the business but then he had to leave it to escape. Even the color of the white chocolate chip ice cream looks like what meth was before it was the distinctive blue.
Great, Saul could have easily eaten that ice cream if he didn't want to waste it, but since it certainly wasn't summer and he didn't want to get sick, he had to throw it away. Which leads to a sad scene like when Walter throws the pizza because it was too hot. BRAVO vince
And this is why we say our prayers in church and are quiet and pay attention in class, children. Because no one wants to grow up to be the guy with the mouth.
