Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest is a 1995 platform game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was released on 21 November 1995 in Japan, 4 December in North America, and 14 December in Europe.
#gaming #snes retro gaming - Ігри
The amount of improvising and creative thinking that the game designers had to do to have enough space on the microchips for the advanced graphics on this game is mindblowing. The History of this game is just as good as the game itself.
Well said and very true!
@@alexgifford8116 Easily one of my favorite Gaming Historian episodes.
@@JustinSteereMusic do you have a link?
@@yeerk Just go to "The Gaming Historian" youtube channel and browse through the videos. He has a lot of great retro stuff that he does a deep dive into on there.
Yeah the dude reverse engineered the hardware, inspired a ton of other games
Kremkoins are required to unlock every level, and hunting them down was challenging. Years later, I learned that exclamation points at the end of level names means you collected all the Kremkoins in that level, and even the world level name. Such a nice QOL feature once you learn it.
On my first playthrough I was like "oh cool, a little icon showing you that you have the DK coin. I wish you could see if you got all the kremcoins" . Then I found this out on a random youtube video 💀
it also did the ! on DKC original as well if you found all the secret rooms. I love this series and even now still replay it on my orignal SNES (dkc 1 2 and 3)
The way I did it back in the day was to save after every level. Wrinkly says once you collect all Kremkoins, 2% is added to the progress.
Did not know about the exclamation point. This would've been easier
I legit found this out like a week ago after I started playing it again, AND what Ryu said at the beginning of the video about the name. This game is just a masterpiece.
WHAT?!
Oh my god. This is a game changer.
DKC2 is the greatest SNES game of all time in my opinion and it has the best soundtrack of all time. I have spent countless hours playing this ever since I was a little kid. I will never get sick of playing it.
It's kindve depressing when you beat it on a run through and get that "that's it?" Feeling
Totally agree. Played this so much as a kid.
Spent 3 months playing whole day snes mariokart instead of preparing for my final tests at university. This is still the best mario kart and best snes game for me! My eyes were bleeding and hurt by our bad TV😂
Ever played 1 and 3?😂
It is the lowest quality
Although I think DC2 is one of the best SNES games ever, I think that Yoshi's Island is number 1. Just my opinion.
'I'm not going to get every secret. I'm just going to get the Kong Letters and the DK Coins'
Little does he know that to get all the DK coins, you need to 103% the game. It means that the bonus stages are all MANDATORY. Amusingly, the Kong letters are not mandatory and are not tracked.
This secret is about as completionist as saying “I will complete all levels in Super Mario Bros. Wonder”.
"There is always a hint for secrets" *immediately misses the secret*
😂😂😂
I was gonna stop the video to comment the exact same thing lol.
The fact that the game *literally spelled it out* for him, too 😂
Frickin “A” bud 😂
@@PlushiePoogleFrickin “A” Cotton, frickin A!!
So excited for this, I hope it ends up being a complete series
there is a ROM hack for this called squitter's spider quest where you play as squitter for the entire game. nearly every level is unaltered making the levels that werent designed for the spider a new challenge. just a few spots were altered to make it possible for squitter to proceed.
Yes! Please play more Donkey Kong Country 2! This game is awesome! It is a childhood favorite of mine! Honestly, '95 was a great year for both SNES and Genesis! Not only did you get DKC 2, but Ristar, Vectorman, Yoshi's Island, Chrono Trigger, Mega Man 7, Earthworm Jim 2, Tetris Attack, and probably other classics I forgot.
Also, you don't need to worry about the KONG letters for 100% in this game. In the SNES version, the only things that matter are Krem Coins from bonus stages (the "!" after the level name on the World Map indicates you got them all in that level) and the DK Coins.
The water effect in the ship interior levels is incredible. It looks legit 3D.
Thing is, it looks STILL incredible. As does the 3D effect in the background with the ship's beams (and later, the castle's).
Ryu! My friend Shan recently got me a cameo from you (the one with the weird nicknames, yeah don’t ask lol) and you talked about how this is one of your favorite games of all time too! So excited to see you play this and just wanted to thank you so Much for taking the time to talk about music, drums and video games for my video, it really meant so much to me man! Let’s do DKC3 next!
Wait, Ryu drums?
"I think I'll just get all the DK coins, I won't worry about all the krem coins" ... should some one tell him, or will he figure it out?
Best game and best soundtrack. I will die on that hill.
Square Soft is like... You did.. Never heard of Chrono Trigger?
Well you wouldn't die alone on it, I'd be right on there with ya. Chrono Trigger is best RPG of all time imho, but DKC2 is best game and soundtrack, PERIOD.
We will die together then.
Sigh. I want to agree, but I'll have to leave it as a tie with smrpg (but you can take soundtrack)
@@kurtvsthealgorithm2400 jaja, well see this is how I break it down
DKC2 - best game overall (gameplay, music, etc)
Chrono Trigger - best RPG overall (same as above)
SMRPG - best SNES soundtrack
I mean it really is nitpicking but they all great games!
This game rocked me as a kid. I also called it Diddy Kong's quest! TIL
o wow, 29 years later i read the name correcty.
English is my second language
Does it even make sense the way it is? I was wondering about a bad translation then I remembered that Rare is Brit
@@edumorangobolcombr You could consider it to make sense if you interpret 'Kong Quest' to mean 'quest for Donkey Kong', but more importantly it's a play on the word 'conquest' to make it double as 'Diddy's Conquest', so basically it works cuz it's a pun :)
Its a play on words. its both his quest, and his Conquest.@@edumorangobolcombr
Oh, that makes sense. Thanks!
Not charging enguarde on the first water level with the huge hint A, also right after saying the game gives you hints, hurt my gaming feelz. Love this game 4 lyfe.
After watching the whole video… You didn’t charge enguarde once?! For shame!
This game is my childhood and lives in my heart forever. Last time I replayed this was on the Wii I think, more than 10 years ago. But it might be time to replay it again. Thanks Ryu for reminding us of this amazing classic!
It very well might be, at least for SNES anyway. Constantly go back and fourth on whether I like this or DKC3 better. 3 gets some hate but I feel like it was just as strong as 2. We've played through all 3 on our channel but 2 is the one I go back to the most
This video popped up in my reccomendeds. I know it's already a few days old, but some tips for anyone who may want to play this game:
- Getting all the KONG letters in a level just gives you an extra life, and the letters respawn every time you visit. Not needed for any kind of completion
- The banana coins are the currency to buy stuff, like hints or try out the trivia minigame. Wrinkly Kong lets you save for free once per world, after that it costs 2 banana coins each time. Funky Kong's first flight in each world costs 2 coins, and after that it is free.
- Lives, bananas, and banana coins are reset every time you load the game if you use the actual save feature. If you just use the Switch save states to save, they won't be reset.
- The DK coins are needed for conpletion, one is in every level. They are just a completionist collectible
- The Kremling coins are found in bonus stages, and you need to collect every single one to 100% the game. They unlock bonus extra challenging levels at Klubba's Kiosk, and you need to beat every one to get the "true ending"
- There are USUALLY 2 bonus stages per level, typically one before the halfway checkpoint barrel and one afterwards. I believe there may be a few exceptions to this though.
RYU!! The Kong Letters don't do anything in this game besides getting you a 1 up, the bonus barrel Coins (2 per level) and the DK Emblem is whats tied to unlocking the bonus world (you can tell if you've completed everything in a level by it having an !)
its 2-3 bonus per level actually...not all of them are 2 only
err should of read all b4 replying: the DK coin only matter in DKC3 not DKC2, DKC2 only the Kremcoins unlock levels, DK coin is for the 100% completion
I’ve been BAMBOOZLED.
Definitely one of my favorite games of all time. On the SNES, I rank it third right behind Super Mario RPG and A Link to the Past.
For me it's contender is SMW. It's hard for me to put one over the other.
@@adamdewey4354 - Agreed. Objectively, I think SMW is the better game. I just enjoy DKC2 more.
These are all great games, but the PERFECT game is Super Metroid. It's one of the best games of all time.
I so LOLED when you were talking about hints as you were riding Enguarde the bananas made an "A" meaning you could charge and destroy the wall right in front of you
He missed a couple walls. I don’t think he knows how to charge boost…
@@TJCake707 but he did it with Rambi and the snake
The letters kong is just for life, you can get them everutime you go in the stage, doesnt count for 102%.
As for the bonuses, even if you fail you can go again, like the first one you fail on stage 1. You need kremcoins to get new stages to which their bonises lvl contains dk coins, to know if you collected all of them in the stage there is a exclamation mark ok the end of the name of the stage.
In reference to your question...
Donkey Kong Country 2!
DK2 is not only longer and more challenging but it also has some of the best level designs and music I've seen/heard. Comparing it to super Mario World is not a fair comparison.
Also the Kong letters don't count for much (1up) and it doesn't count towards 100% completing like it does in the "Returns" series.
This one of those games that hits so hard because we were all kids when it came out. It was such an emotional trip. I believe all of us can remember where we were, playing certain levels, or hearing certain music, that sends the emotions we felt to the forefront and all we can do is shake our heads and smile. I love reading the comments and seeing similar experiences to my own. I hope 2024 is full of abundance for you all.
Please keep playing! This is one of my favorite games from when I was a kid. You're amazing skills will help me feel confused from dying on some of the harder levels.
Definitely want to see you play the rest of this and the 3rd game too!
"therell be some sort of hint" as he misses the hint right in front of him
to swim more effectively I find you hold down and paddle fast the whole time. This keeps you more level. You can hold down and press right or left at the same time to turn while paddling and staying level. Holding the run button will also make you swim faster horizontally and vertically as well, with the caveat that you also have to hold up to swim faster up I think.
13:35 The pure dramatic irony of Ryu saying "I think they give you a hint if you can go through a wall" while connecting a single banana against a breakable wall that he doesn't break and moves on
Please keep playing! This game has the been OST in a video ever imo. Such an absolute vibe.
This game was the perfect amount of fun, challenge, epic music, secrets, fun animal supporting cast, collecting items for full completion… there were a few elite games but this is my favorite. Still play it every year
I’m definitely one of those people. This is my favorite game ever and I do truly think this is one of the best platformers ever made with an incredible soundtrack.
Sorry for the people who prefer the first one, this sequel vastly improved absolutely everything.
Agreed
I agree. Just played the first one through in 4 hours with my wife, and it's a staple for sure, but.. The sequel is far superior.
Anyone who says the first is better just was born at the perfect time where that was the first real platformer they ever played. The second one is objectively better. The third one is... weird. I played it the first time a few years ago and was very torn. It has many of the best parts of DKC2 but also some really dumb and weird things thrown in
Try playing it with the sound muted and tell me how well the game holds up. I love DKC2, but the music elevates it _a lot._ As an actual game, it’s hardly any better than the other SNES DKC games.
@@BareBandSubscription I wholeheartedly disagree. I've played through the trilogy multiple times and as far as gameplay goes DKC 2 is superior, not FAR superior but still superior.
25:33 LOL! Also, Klubba's Kiosk has a forest background because it leads to the lost world, so it looks the same everywhere; they didn't want to bother changing the background for each area that you find him in.
13:07 David Wise composed an amazing soundtrack for this game
He didn't compose it. Avril Lavigne did. She let him have credit bc she don't give AF
Ryu I love that you are playing this casually and would enjoy seeing you (learn to) speedrun this game. I love everything you do brother.
You were questioning the spider webs.
While this has virtually nothing to do with the speedrun tech, it might be life saving knowledge in a casual play:
The game only wants you to have 2 active web platforms at any given time. As soon as you shoot a third, one will start to disappear sooner than you might like it to. This is possibly due to preventing sprite overload and being overly laggy. So not shooting the third will elongate the life of a web platform by a significant amount, however not infinitely.
And yes, the speedrun of this game is absolutely bonkers, and from my own experience, very fun to perform in front of people who have nostalgia over this game.
Super Mario World was my CHILDHOOD, I remember playing it with my mom on her old console, I miss those days 😞
DKC trilogy are my favorite games.
The original printed strategy guides are filled with awesome art.
I love this game. This game, or rather, the Gameboy remake, was my first game. I spent countless hours trying to find every secret and even learned the cheat codes so I could unlock everything or get extra coins, or listen to the soundtrack. I memorized the layouts of the levels and could get to max lives and coins in short order (with and without cheats lol). DKC2 is one of if not my favorite game ever, maybe tied with TLoZTP.
The devs made also Yooka Laylee - and Yooka Laylee The Impossible Lair. The second game is basically DK2 but in a new era. Its amazing.
Yes, we want to see more DKC2! And it would be great if you could try to collect enough Bonus Coins to unlock the 'Star World' levels. These stages are challenging, especially the later ones.
Do you mean the Lost World levels?
@@supercamborg4218
Yes, exactly. Ryu referred to the Lost World as "Star World" - analogous to the Star World in some Super Mario games. I thought I would pick up on his analogy for the sake of simplicity.
@@777paradoxable I somehow didn’t catch that, my bad
I’m absolutely here for this entire series and I hope it’s the full game this is my absolute favorite game and an absolute banger
"It's the hot balloon level, so iconic" Immediately kills himself HAHAHAHAHA
My favorite levels are the roller coaster levels around the bee area.
This is the best game in the DKC trilogy. I miss when they used to create complete and good games like these
Gaming just needs the SNES and rare (lel) occasions outside of that. The console is just peak gaming
Tropical Freeze surpassed it imo
13:23 Talks about hints and then proceeds to not get the hint 😂
The snow level in DKC 1 thoo....
even Ryu takes for granted the giant As made out of bananas, meaning that you need to hold A for the animal buddy to build up speed and blast some walls, or for the fish to go foward on that dry area hahaha
Also, I dunno if anyone answered yet. The bonus world basically gives a secret boss fight/Alt. ending if you clear all of the stages. Same with the third game.
You need a Part 2 with the completion of this ASAP
it IS the best game of all time. my favorite game!
The best game of all time is life... after that it is either Chrono Trigger or Bioshock and you always knew this...
Tropical Freeze is better.
@@tetermc it's okay to be wrong.
You can replay the mini game as many times as you want. All you had to do was break through the door with the rhino again.
Probably my #2 favorite video game soundtrack of all time (after Chrono Trigger). Easily the best game in the SNES trilogy. Just great all around. Love this game!
Yes to all of this 🩷
I have Chrono Trigger for the PS1. I don't have the system to play it on. I'm hoping Square Enix can do an remake for the PS4/PS5/Switch. Chrono Trigger is one of my favorites on the Super Nes back in the day along with A Link to the Past and Super Metroid.
You need to collect all Kremkoins to unlock the secret levels which in turn unlocks the final real ending to the game. Also the ! at the end of the level name means you collected all the kremkoins for that level.
Whoa such great timing!!! I watched your playthrough of DKC literally just a couple days ago, after completing the game myself for the first time ever. Too bad I can't let myself watch this video yet, gotta experience playing the game first, you know. I'll be back after I've beat it though! :D
Thinking back I guess this is actually the one that feels the most iconic.
If you have everything in a level, its name ends with !
I remember getting this game for Christmas...and it's still the most impressionable Christmas gift I have ever gotten, even if it isn't "the best"
Thanks for playing this, Ryu, I'm such a huge fan of this game and your channel. SuperWow!
Hell yeah! Hope this becomes a full playthrough, I feel like you'd really appreciate the difficulty.
the web disapear in order of wich is used last, like you thow a web and jump in the send another by mistake and send a new one where you want it to be, well the first were you stand will last and the one you didn't even touch will fall appart, it may be a lil complicated but it is easy to understand just have to try it a little bit and you'll get the point
I'm an avid Mario fan first and this game is still my favorite childhood game of all time. From the gameplay, to the music, the difficulty, and the triumph of success. Throw in the unique nostalgia of it all and it's like an old friend welcoming you back.
Love how Ryu thinks that he is supposed to get all the KONG letters when they just mean 1 extra life hahah
In Tropical Freeze I think you do have to get KONG
Donkey kong series is on my all time favorites list, and specifically this game. I spent hours upon hours playing through this as a kid. 100% going to have to plug in the old SNES and play it again.
"Diddy Kong's Quest" was in fact the official subtitle for some time before the game was released - you can even find commercials from that time that use that subtitle.
This is how a lot of "Mandela Effects" work - people remember something that _was_ true at one point, but then faded into obscurity.
As with many folks here, this game holds a apecial place in my heart. Also, not sure if someone elae said it, but i believe rhe swordfish's name is Enguardo.
hey @Ryu, those blue buff guys CAN be killed if you have both partners. Press A to have them hop on your back and then throw them like a barrel and it will kill those dudes.
if you don't get all the krem coins you can't play all the levels of the lost world (which are some of the best and hardest levels in the whole game) also the 'true ending'. SUPER worth.
I didn't realize till you pointed it out that it's Diddy's Kong Quest (and that screen actually had a hyphen Kong-Quest) not Diddy Kong's Quest. Diddy is a Kong too so that also makes sense. I love that game, and still own it, though I never managed to finish it.
And most of the mini-games you can backtrack and go back into.
This game makes me nostalgic. I still have it and Donkey Kong's country 1 and 2 with my reliable snes. I'm definitivly going to start it up, when I have time to play
For the spider, the web timing is not random, it's just the timing is different if you throw it and expand it mid air or while standing
Yes I'd love to see you at least try to do a 100% run of this, even tho finding all the bonus levels is pretty rough at times.
Buen video amigo! esperaré las otras partes
Definitely need to do more Diddy's Kong Quest!
Yes please play the full game! So nostalgic to watch
Webs work like this: there can only be two on screen. If you stand on one, you shoot the second one. If you stand on the second one and shoot the third one, the oldest web, ergo the first one, will despawn. But if you shoot the third one BEFORE you land on the second one, this third one will count as your second one and the original second one will despawn. You can only have one second web.
The spiders platform web you can shoot them at an upward or downward angle holding the direction pad as you shoot the platform webs up or down
YES! This and Super Mario RPG are my favorite games of all time
casual playthrus of old games is a great sleep aid, with a nice voice and familiar music thanks
If you miss some bonus coins, there is a secret in the first level that gives you all the bonus coins in the game. Also the kong letters just gives you lives.
Grabbing the ropes left/right or middle is something Donkey Kong, and now Diddy/Dixie Kong, already could do since Donkey Kong Classic on the NES.
YES I wanna see a longer play of this THANK YOOUUUUUUU
yo ryu, dixie can do the same mid-air jump trick as diddy, it just plays a different animation but it works almost exactly like the cartwheel
Definitely wanna see a full playthrough of this one. One of my top games of all time and probably my favorite on the SNES.
This is probably my favorite snes game. Played it so much as a kid. Pumped to watch a play through.
"There'll be some sort of hint"
>Ignores game actually spelling out to press the A button
Yes... there'll always be something...
Came from a video recommendation, stayed and subbed for the fun playthroughs and lighthearted commentary👍
Happy new year! I am new here, so maybe dumb questions: how do you stream/record with switch/retro consoles and did you consider emulators for better screen support, streaming? I am just curious....
I'll more than definitely watch you play more of this game as well as the other DKC games
An early screenshot in Nintendo Power actually had Diddy Kong’s Quest on the title screen
I know people don't always like filters, but this game was designed to look good on old CRT TVs. Scan lines make it look exponentially better because the developers took them into account when working on the graphics.
The first time I played this on the Switch I thought, "wow, I remember this looking a lot better." After turning on the filter, it made a world of difference. People think filters are making the graphics worse for some weird nostalgic reasons, but it's not true. They don't do much for 8-bit era games, but once you get to 16-bit, the more complex graphics were specifically designed for display on old-school monitors.
Really wanna see the rest of this for sure
You can redo the failed mini games in the same level without restarting it. Don't know if someone posted it already.
In my top 10 for sure, top 5 soundtracks, and is one of the most nostalgic games for me... Got it on Xmas of 95 and the soundtrack takes me right back to that Christmas morning and the following morning when I played this game nonstop... I was already at the bayou the morning after Xmas and just blazing through it...
Ryu: I'm not gonna get all the secrets, just all the DK coins.
Me: You wanna tell him or should I?
Just saying, this is great stuff, one of my favorite games of all time. Please keep this up, and as others have said, don't worry about the KONG, it's just a 1UP but you might want to go back for the bonuses after you finish up the playthru, you lost very few of it and even found some cryptic ones like the Rambi one in Red-Hot Ride.👌
Need pt 2. Thx Ryu!!
dude, would be cool to see you complete the star level place. Never finished that place as a kid, would be cool to see.
Yes!!! Been waiting for you to branch out again
This is my absolute favourite game from childhood on SNES!! PLEASE play all the way through!!
He trying take the letters, for nothing, was so funny
hey ryu, the bonus tokens are more important collectables than the kong letters. the letters don't count to 100% completion, is just for extra lives
Out of the Trilogy, I would have to go with 3 as my favorite, I love the original but I love the overworld map in DKC3 with the boat upgrades and especially the entire secret island that unless you were specifically told my a friend how to unlock it, or by having Nintendo Power Mag or the Rare(ware) Developer/making of the game VHS that came with the mail in pre order of DKC3. (When the game was new the Internet wasn't widely available yet) if you didn't have those or friends lol than you wouldn't know, Their may have been subtle dialogue hints in game iirc but not something a little kid would pick up but I remember you had to drive around the special rocks in a figure 8 pattern and the special island would rise up and what made the extra world so hard was you had to unlock each level by bringing an NPC DK coins or bonus coins collected from other levels and it was like 10-15 coins to unlock each level. I really wish Nintendo would reinvigorate the series, I haven't played Tropical Freeze yet (only bc Nintendo never puts it's 1st party games on sale LMAO and I'm not paying $60 for a game that came out in 2014 lol (I know the Switch version has upted graphics or whatever but it's still 10 years old this year).
