Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest is a 1995 platform game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was released on 21 November 1995 in Japan, 4 December in North America, and 14 December in Europe.

Not ashamed to say that's the one level to this day I have never been able to complete.
Although people say Animal Antics is the hardest lvl of the series I actually think that if you purposefully don't get the shortcut, Snow Barrel Blast is actually way worse
So in dkc one they actually point out via cranky's dialogue that you need to use the roll off the cliff jump thing to complete certain puzzles so that is absolutely a built-in feature not an exploit

@@RyuWhen you see the "troll" banana bunches that seemingly lead you off of a cliff, those are actually just opportunities to use the roll/jump feature, which both Kongs can do.
Diddy is best Kong.
It's often easier to throw a teammate at it.

34:00 It's not a console limitation. Remembering if checkpoint was collected is literally 1 bit to save, the game already saves much more data about each level (like bonus room and DK coin). Instead, you probably lose the checkpoint as a design decision so you can explore collectibles you missed in first half of the level.

Rolling off a ledge and jump is a technique that has been encouraged since DK1. If you play the first level of DK1, you will find a secret green balloon (2 lives) that is only possible to obtain by rolling off a ledge and jump from banana trees. So, it's not an "exploit".

Of course you have to complete this game! I had forgotten how tricky some of the later levels in this game could get. I think this is the hardest game in the Donkey Kong Country series. Gloomy Gulch really dials up the difficulty especially if you're playing on console since you have to beat a few levels before you can reach the save point. I could never get past Kreepy Krow as a kid at the parts with the eggs being tossed at you as you climb.
Also, that purple Squawks is actually named Quawks. He is pretty much Squawk's special little brother or something. 😅
I mostly agree with you. DKC2 has a perfect difficulty curve. I may consider DKC3 harder just because of a few bullshit stages with hella punishing gimmicks. That lakeside lightning stage and Rocket Run come to mind.
@@danielpayne1597 Good call! It has been awhile since I last played DKC3 and, yeah, some of those level gimmicks were definitely punishing (or just plain BS). I can definitely see your point about DKC3 being a bit harder than 2.
@@mattb6522 Thanks. I mean, DKC2 has genuine challenges. The birb race in the final world ain't no joke! And Lost World doesn't mess around after stage 2. But I don't think those trigger quite as many rage resets as the DKC3 gimmicks XD
Tbh I think if you never get or go for the shortcut on Snow Barrel Blast, it's harder than Animal Antics.
Dkc 2 is far from perfect. Some of the secrets are bogus.
theses 42% are about unlocking all secrets, not the distance to the finish line.
I have to say I have grown to appreciate forest interlude over even stickerbush symphony.

"isn't an anaconda a snake?" Yes it's a particularly large type of snake! There is an Anaconda horror movie series which first came out in 1997 starring Jennifer Lopez.

Thank you for returning to this game Ryu. Love that you try and get the collectibles, it adds value to the let's play. The wind section is extremely trolly. Hoping one day Nintendo makes a Donkey Kong maker so people can experiment with all the tricky mechanics the DK series is known for.
You can midair jump with the Snake. When he does his little hops
you can go off the edge with them and jump mid air at any time
it is really useful and makes the Snake so much better.

why is it that I can't decide what to play these days when it comes to new gen games, however I can pick up any DKC anytime and just enjoy myself or any retro snes game for a matter of fact

29:27 an interesting tip for those who don't know about it. When you jump and create the web and press it again immediately, you will land on the web. This makes for faster traversal as the spider.
fun fact, the name (or likely one of many) for the technique of rolling off the edge and then jumping after you're in the air is Coyote Time, named after Wile E Coyote's antics involving running off a cliff and hanging in midair until he looks down.
Just a quick tip, you can use Diddy's roll and Dixie's spin to kill the Beatles and some other baddies. You can chain it too if there's a bunch of baddies in a row, they'll keep cartwheeling/spinning. You can also use Dixie's spin to do a double jump like Diddy's cartwheel. Love your playthrough through this man. 👍
Ryu hooting and hollering about "missing" the DK coin on the roller coaster level while I was yelling "YOU DIDN'T MISS IT" at my computer was really a fun experience.
Save states are only cheating if you use them for an in-game advantage. Using them to pause the game (save, quit, reload once) is perfectly fine. There's a reason Nintendo calls them "suspend points".

I own 4 original carts of this game and will never part with them. Probably my actual favorite game. The platforming, music, aesthetics, difficulty curve, just everything about it. Growing up with the Donkey Kong Country Exposed vhs from Nintendo Power, then playing DKC one day and my friend says "hey there's a second one at Safeway for rent." Score copy #1

@@anonymousvampire9572 the Safeway closed probably about a year before we moved from Washington to Alabama and I had the game for maybe a month when they closed. The hidden kicker is my grandma was the manager over the rental department. We ended up with all their tapes and now I have literally over a thousand of them since she passed recently, all with a Safeway sticker lol
@@fantasticdavidson1179 the second one was yard sale find for $10 like 12 or so years ago, the third was the CIB one I bought recent-ish and the fourth was in a lot I bought from my buddy getting out of collecting. I'll end up with a couple more probably from buying lots lol

Oh Ryu, these levels get more challenging as you progress! Won’t spoil, but there was one level with the Parett (forgot its name), I think in this world, that I spent about an hour on trying to complete. I can see how the torn levels in this game inspired the drag levels in Super Mario Galaxy. Enjoy the ice level music in the next stage! :D

Forget Animal Antics, THIS level was the bane of my existence when I first played DKC2. So many Game Overs for that one level.
Did you know you can also do the roll off the edge and jump move with Dixie Kong ryu? When she spins it has the same effect!

Someone should tell him that in the haunted hall, you can jump on top of the first bonus area and it will take you to another bonus area.
As Ryu discovered (but didn't seem to fully realize), Dixie is _much_ better than Quawks in Parrot-chute Panic. You can complete the entire stage without the bird (and I always do on replays), and Dixie's way more maneuverable so you can get away with more. Takes knowing the stage or having very good reflexes but it's definitely the better way to fall with style

Always try to do a cartwheel before a jump. It adds extra distance and increases your speed.
I got stuck at the Web Woods level for a long time as a 9 year old kid. It feels vindicating that an adult who is a better gamer than I ever was doesn't just breeze through it.

I've noticed you change to Diddy to do the roll off a ledge and jump. You know Dixie can do that too, right? She does it the same exact way. She's op as hell but Diddys speed makes him awesome as hell.
No she can't jump after falling a short distance off the ledge. Try it if you don't believe me

Maybe I said that in a way that maybe you misunderstood what I was saying, but if you do Dixies hair spin while on the ground and go right off the side, you can do a jump just like Diddy and Donkey before her. All four characters in the original trilogy can do that. Now it's way easier to pull off with Diddy than Dixie cause her physics feels a bit off compared to Diddy, but I promise she does it too. I used to speed run this game for years cause it's my favorite game of all time and the devs put a lot of thought into every aspect of it.

The exclamation point at the end of the level names indicates that you found all the bonus coins in said level… incase you didn’t know
Nice work with Gloomy Gulch. Squitter actually can't kill enemies by jumping- he has to use his web shot. Web Woods is considered the hardest part of that world, but the toughest areas in the game are still to come...
So if you don't jump on the webs they disappear faster, and when you jump off them they go almost immediately

They are the best 2D plattformers imo.
ofc continue the serie and make longer videos :)...some tips: single banana = possible secret or invisible coins.......stack of bananas = never a secret or hidden path..its just there to get lives(you can jump backward after a roll so never go all the way unless you saw a landing spot on the other side).............off topic: add onions, scallions, garlic and spicy peppers to your hotdogs :)....spicy pepper if you can take the heat...ofc the ketchup is auto-include(just in case i'am suppose to mention it :P)

The disappearing webs if you shoot a new web platform before you land on the last one you shot it will disappear. if you land on it then the one previously will disappear. i think they did that so if you mess up your next shot you can redo it with dropping you in a hole.
Protip: If you're carrying a teammate you won't get stuck in the honey.

Also, I think this has the most funny moments in the series so far. That Kutlass play was great.
Edit: Web Woods was easily the most frustrating level for me as a kid, partly due to Squitter's weird web platform mechanics. If I remember, you can only have two onscreen before one of them despawns, and I thought it tended to favor the platform you're on, but watching this video it really does just feel random sometimes. That along with the AWFUL hero coin placement at the end of an already brutally long level and being so easy to mistime make that level far worse than Animal Antics ever was for me.

And you can't jump on ANYONE with the spider. He's fragile. You can only kill things with his web, not by jumping on them. You were doing it a bit this time but you can control the direction of the web and make it go up or down. That's what you needed to do with the guy throwing the hooks is angle the web up to hit him instead of jumping and putting yourself in the line of fire.
