Speaking as someone who grew up with Wii era Mario, classic Mario always fascinated me. Getting to progressively play it all felt so rewarding. It helps that my first game actually was Mario 1 on some 118 in 1 plug n play thing
If I had to give a theory based off observations, I would say Nintendo asked them to put interactive elements in to appeal to kids more honestly, given how things were with the Mario Movie and how hands on they were with that.
Long time LEGO fan, slightly less but still pretty long time Blender user, and more recently custom LEGO minifigure designer. I've got some thoughts on this. While I think that overall this is pretty damn good, there are some areas that could be fixed up. Mario - While not bad for a minifigure Mario, there's still a bit off about him. The main thing I notice is the torso print. The print isn't necessarily bad, just VERY rough. The sharp angles on the print just aren't very LEGO, especially the small triangle below the neck. The buttons are alright, but could probably use an outline, maybe in orange. They also look just a bit too close to the straps which themselves could afford to be a bit wider. The top red areas on the front print also cut off at a weird 45 degree angle, while LEGO's figures are smooth and rounded in the corners. The red shirt parts on the front also don't extend to the edge properly, instead tapering in weirdly as it goes down. The blue outline around it also for some reason comes to a rounded point instead of cutting off like it should. The legs are the second thing that really stand out to me. While dual molded legs are a good choice, Mario is a portly fellow, and would more likely use Mid Legs, though I don't believe those have been given the dual molded treatment yet, so it's a toss up either way. The face is something else though. I think that the light blue shine should be removed, the white shine should be bigger, and MAYBE make it more elliptical than circular. The eyes should also have selective black outlines to them, similar to what you'd see on the Looney Tunes CMF figures. It's also odd to me that his sideburns are modeled and not his mustache since the head would already have brown molded into it from the hair, but that's less important overall I feel. The Set - I don't really have any major complaints with the overall design of this one. The ONLY big thing I'd say is that the UI elements would likely be on the same color plates as the sky and not transparent clear, since transparent clear plates are a lot less common, and it would help more with legibility. As far as the accessories go, LEGO already HAS an existing mushroom cap piece from a recent CMF, so there's no real reason for them to mold a new one for Mario, especially since your version is proportionally awkward with the minifigure head, and LEGO would already be using a HUGE chunk of their parts budget for the newly molded Mario head and all of the unique prints. The Goomba is almost there, just needed to dual mold it so the stem? is light nougat instead of reddish brown. it looks more... phallic when it's the same color. The coins are another issue too. Again, a LOT of the parts budget is already being used up here, and the custom coin mold just isn't that reusable for LEGO to justify it existing. They'd more than likely just reuse the existing coin print from the NES set, especially since that could nicely fit into the hand of a minifigure. The Box - Mostly unproblematic for me. The main thing is the top. I feel like it's just WAY too cluttered up there. Either remove the additional image of all of the accessories laid out, or change it to be Mario, a Goomba, and a Mushroom, just to keep things clean. Gotta say though, love the small touch with the set number that literally nobody else but me would be stupid enough to look up. Overall, this wasn't terrible, just a bit off in some places. I definetly think you're getting there though, and next time I'm hoping to see something that really knocks it out of the park.

Personally, I think the set would be better as 3D levels like the original lego version but with your custom models. Because when I was a kid, I liked to play with lego with my parents and my siblings where I'd create my own worlds with no need of electricity. I think making the set fixed to a certain game just takes away from the creativity that lego is made for.
Oh, by the way... if anyone was wondering why Lego went this direction for the Lego Mario... it's likely because of Nintendo. Nintendo used to be a toy company back in the day, and even in the modern era, their roots in being toy manufacturers can be seen in things such as "Nintendo Labo", those cardboard boxes that Nintendo sold along with a couple games. So, it's likely that when they decided to start making Lego for Mario, they wanted to add something to the formula... so they came up with having the Mario toy actually be an electronic game where you build the levels out of Lego... the perfect combination of what both Nintendo and Lego are all about (regardless of how much collectors aren't too much of a fan for it) Edit: to answer the question as to why kids might want the smaller one... the current Lego Mario can't really mix with other Lego themes that well do to how big they are. As fun as the base Lego sets are... they don't really allow you to have Mario, Spider Man, and Bat Man team up to fight Doctor Robotnic nearly as well as they would if they had a mini figure scale Mario...
I’m younger and I would choose the Nostalgia set no matter what. I’m not a kid but I’m also not old enough to have ever played older Mario. And I honestly just think that your version is better and I would buy it.
9:19 cuz it's iconic and people below the age of 52 know about the original mario game. plus the design is more familiar to actual lego and it's also smaller so it's easier to build.
Fun fact, upper is not the only one who has those little tab. Closers chrome has had it for a while actually but I would use opera because it’s just got more customizability
