How can any right-thinking person disagree with what you say? Having the courage to carry out such action is the issue for me tbh. You are a great example having been imprisoned doing what you believe we must all do if we are to avert global catastrophe. Thank you for being true to your principles.
He just said we are going for unavoidable extinction. Where did the avert part come in? I was just looking for an excuse to make my life more uncomfortable & meet new friends.
Thankyou for your inspiration. I am currently rescuing coho baby salmon from from a pool that is drying up..I demanded that the government DFO supply traps which I have been able to save over 121 baby salmon into the Pacific Ocean. Vancouver Island, BC, canada

I came to your original talk in Amsterdam several years back & it spurred me into action. Taking a big break from climate issues (XR) for the last year, it's terrifying that there are attempts now to silence you. You & others like yourself make the government very anxious! Looking forward to your take on democracy & its weakening...
You are a great contemporary thinker. I am trying to learn from you and your colleagues - Jem Bendell ; Rupert Read; Gail Bradbrook. I teach international education at UCL. Thank you all for making these talks.
Pleased that you mentioned responsibilities such as work and caring for the old and young as they are indeed barriers especially if you have a job that depends not having a criminal record. Currently looking after an elderly and ill parent and feel I need to do more and can't wait any longer to take some form of action.
Hallam states that we have a moral duty to prevent extinction and assumedly is referring to human extinction. As by far the most destructive species on the planet, and one which has caused and is causing mass extinctions of other species, I can not see why saving the human species should be considered important. This view, which I hold honestly, does not stem from misanthropy but rather from a pragmatic viewpoint: our beautiful planet and all its wonderous flora and fauna will thrive once humans have departed the scene. But regardless of one's viewpoint the probability is that our species will suffer a catastrophic population decline, if not extinction, after global temperatures rise above 2.5 degrees and feedback loops ensure an exponential acceleration of heating, food scarcity and the complete breakdown of our 'civilization'.
Agree with you. I am saddened that it has come to this point. I have four adult children . Yet I look at our species and I am filled with anger and disgust.
@@fmj9346 I have 3 young adult step-children. I have given up even trying to talk to them about what our collective future might (probably) will become. They are planning careers and they dismiss me, in common with most others, as just an overly pessimistic doomer. But I've followed these and similar debates relating to economics and 'renewables' VERY closely over the past 4 years. I know who is and isn't worth listening to and I understand the issues all too well. My step-children's future is almost certainly going to be a more uncertain and unsettling one than was mine.
Roger, I admire your dedication and ideas. I just don’t think disruption is the way to win hearts and minds. Surely disruption is needed to change. But most people hate change. Not much we can do about that. They will keep fooling themselves in order to go on with their comfy lives and we are not gonna change that in a democratic way in the coming decade. I fear that the only thing that will lead to real change is the force of nature. All we can offer in the meanwhile is awareness and love. Lots of it.
Disrruption must happen. The government isn't going to stop what is acrually killing the planet...capitalism and consumerism. So we must do it instead. This matters more than ANY war EVER fought. People can't seem to make the changes on their own and coporations have a stranglehold on global government. They are too addicted to the systems of capitalism and consumption. While green tech is part of the solution, degrowth and the end of capitalism and consumption must happen. We have given the world over 50 years to make these changes peacefully....we warned and exucated and ran politiciancs, made documentary after documentary, but the time of that is over. The delay has left us no choice but to step up the actions and force the disruption to the thing that is killing us all...the global economy. Please read the book The Ministry for the Future.
The questions to ask politicians is what they will do when coffee ends, tea ends, potatoes end, rice ends, wheat ends. the crops won’t survive either, all those businesses will shut, what are they doing about it. i suspect losing coffee might scare them more than their lives.
I always sit down and listen to Roger. He is the real deal, fearless because he knows sooner or later the dice will roll for the truth, not the denial prop.
By the way, Roger, my favorite speech of yours is the small gathering with the visual learning tool of plastic bag over the girl's head. "She's not dead yet". Your intro, "Six billion people are going to starve to death". Hope I got that correct from my memory. I think it was in Penzance, UK. Your words pierced me. And I felt that yes, speak the truth, unabashedly. People think it is bad taste to speak aloud dark truth. No, it is not bad taste to care to tell truth. You know what is bad taste? American journalists trotting out statements of latest mass assassinations on the news in the US every other day, devoid of emotion and moving onto the next story in mere minutes. Bad taste is reporting that 40,000 cows dropped dead in one region in Kansas in one day due to a fixed-in-place heat dome and not acknowledging it a result of climate change. Bad taste is the news anchors reporting on an entire town wiped off the map from wildfire in California and then not acknowledging it was due to climate change. Bad taste is sitting by idly, watching mass death, not caring, and not stating the cause... government inaction, corruption, greed, a mass death project, and worship of short-term profit mostly by people who are old and will be dead and gone when billions of humans have died and our species is going extinct on a planet that will be hell on Earth. Thank you. Much love. Heidi
I salute Mr. Hallam for his personal courage, his sacrifices and his efforts to mobilize a call for disobeying the Corporations, but if there is any chance of this movement to make real change in the transition to a new way of life, courage is not enough. Most people will need detailed directions what exactly to do and more garanties that in the ensuing chaos there will be some structure. No person would jump from a cliff willingly, holding to the last possible moment, without some belief that the jump won’t be fatal for them and their family,. Every single community should have some form of a leadership- organizational comities or similar body to guide the general direction of day to day activities of their people - since the bureaucratic apparatus won’t be functioning. Problems of housing, energy, transportation, communication, food and water, waste medical care will have to be solved, education and transfer of skills in the long run etc. The only organization, I could think of, trained to do that efficiently is the army. Why not just recruit the generals for the eco movement and in a year we can have organized (more or less) transition to post fossil fuel society- no violent mobs, no destruction, smooth and bloodless. That’s is if every single general is on our side - in the end what the corporations can offer more then us - useless money in nonexistent economy on a almost dead planet- the choice should be a no brainer 🙂
Interesting idea. Thought along same lines but unfortunately the British army is no longer our army... It's Europe's and/or NATO's and that's another story. Government takeover by the people will be closer to it... Keep praying!
Wow. Thank you from the bottom ofy heart for creating this video 💓🙏🏻💓 you're broadcasting what a lot of us leaders in the healing field have been striving to communicate for a long time, and very well indeed. Thank you for your service. Make no mistake, we who thank you deeply are not shutting your proposition down, we are thanking you for being a catalyst, for serving the world. Gratitude is a value as well as appropriate action, it doesnt have to slow down drive, it can propel it even further once validation isn't cast to one side as a human behaviour that gets in the way of progress within an overwhelming crisis. Validation is the bedrock of a healthy nervous system, which is needed for longevity, and we need longevity to win this. Talking of efficiency in this respect, love and passion is a faster and more robust driver than guilt long term. Leading and helping people into that consciousness is vital, because i for one as a crisis counsellor do not one to see mass suicide as a result of this - this can be prevented with nuance before this crisis hits. We need to get as many people to the equivalent of our spiritual evolution within our psychology or higher as quickly as possible for the least fatalities. And this can be done without denial and spiritual bypassing of the climate crisis.
@elephantintheroom5678 - There is no climate crisis so nothing to be stressed about. The depression, and more serious mental health problems, are caused by climate hysteria.

Thank you Roger - a sobering reality check delivered with passion and honesty. We must each take action every day to reduce carbon emissions. Personally, in our local communities, nationally and globally. Not easy but possible. And it starts with reality. Not positive mental thought. Real action. Big and small. Every day. And if you haven’t taken action to reduce your carbon footprint in the last week then you are part of the problem. Be part of the solution. Now.

In 1982, Nasa/Sandia Labs published 'Status of the Magma Energy Project' "The current magma energy project is assessing the engineering feasibility of extracting thermal energy directly from crustal magma bodies. The estimated size of the U.S. resource (50,000 to 500,000 quads) suggests a considerable potential impact on future power generation. In a previous seven-year study, we concluded that there are no insurmountable barriers that would invalidate the magma energy concept. Several concepts for drilling, energy extraction, and materials survivability were successfully demonstrated in Kilauea Iki lava lake, Hawaii. The present program is addressing the engineering design problems associated with accessing magma bodies and extracting thermal energy for power generation. The normal stages for development of a geothermal resource are being investigated: exploration, drilling and completions, production, and surface power plant design. Current status of the engineering program and future plans are described." (Current global energy demand is around 600 quads.) I do not understand why greens have not demanded application of magma energy technology that could supply the world's energy needs carbon free, plus provide power for desalination, irrigation, recycling and carbon capture. Could you explain why you are demanding we 'Just Stop Oil' - rather than Just Go Magma?
@@JonathanLoganPDX Ironically, as a philosopher, one tries to give people hope; and yet one's own sense of hope is determined by their unwillingness and/or inability to understand. More literally, Just Stop[ping] Oil would cause a catastrophe as bad as that we are trying to avoid. You seem to think climate change is 'the danger.' But no. The real danger is the collapse of civilisation - and you, and Just Stop Oil act as if to precipitate that disaster. Why?
I appreciate very much the sacrifice and hardship being faced by this organization. Stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. How can we leverage AI as a tool to address the issue?
My dear friend, the system has evolved we are all part of it. There’s nothing to resist against. I listened to this whole thing, and there were two words I didn’t hear. Did I just miss them? The two words are “nuclear power.” It’s a carbon free way to generate power on a mass scale, and it doesn’t depend on wind or weather. The environmental move should have been demanding more nuclear plants, rather than fighting them at every turn.
Nuclear fuel is finite and Nuclear waste is dangerous. If we were to go 100% Nuclear for electricity production alone, we would need to build 15000 (fifteen thousand) Nuclear power plants and the fuel would run out in 5 years. There is a reason the world isn't powered by Nuclear right now and it's not because politicians listen to Greenpeace. Have a lovely day ❤

Dear Roger, How do we transition to renewables? How will it be achieved? In what year will it be achieved? What is the requirement? How many wind turbines? How many solar panels? How many hydro dams? How many whatever? Where will it all be? When will it be ready? Keep in mind that this must be done worldwide. Also keep in mind that overall energy consumption in 2050 will be 50% more than it was in 2020. What happens when there’s no wind? What happens when it’s too windy? What happens when there’s no sun? If batteries are the solution- What capacity is needed ? How many are needed? Where will they be? When will they be installed? If pumped hydro is the solution- What capacity is needed ? How many are needed? Where will they be? When will they be installed? Also to be kept in mind - Renewables currently provide 11% of energy. (It’s been that way for years.) Hydro is 7%. Wind is 2% Biomass is 1% Solar is 1%. Others is 1%. Nuclear is 4%. Fossil fuels is 84%.
Don't forget that 2/3rds of that fossil 84% is wasted heat. Only about 28% is useful energy we actually have to replace. So we are already 36% transitioned even on your numbers, which appear to be out of date (these things are changing quite quickly as wind and solar add about 500TWh of generation each year). Wind (2100TWh) is now half as much as hydro (4300TWh), and solar half that (1300TWh), so that's suggests current figures are more like hydro 7%, wind 4%, solar 2%, and biomass is more like 8% primary energy globally, than 1%. So fossil fuel is now about 80% (57% in 'useful' terms) now. So we are getting close to half-way done. It will still take a while (and fossil fuel use is still growing in most countries in absolute terms), but more than half the money is going into renewables/storage now and the transition continues to accelerate. I expect you will be surprised how quickly things change. It does still need to go faster as the current rate of change means it'll still take about 70 years to switch everything over. This is far too slow, given our remaining carbon budget.
The global investment in NEW solar has this year superseded the global investment in NEW coal. Why?: Because it is SO MUCH CHEAPER. It is beginning to change, the tide has turned.
Think of Roger as the Fire Chief. His job and mission is to get humanity to stop burning all carbon-based fuels. He's not an engineer working to rebuild the house after putting out the fire. There are tons of those folks already working on solutions. Also, you can find answers to most of your questions on Google. Give it a try.
Roger, thank you so much for the clarity of your message. I must say that I find the idea of 10’000 capable people spending days sitting on a Dutch motor way and being arrested - deeply wrong. Because it’s a huge waste of resources and time. We know what needs to be done in the Netherlands: - insulate homes - build out the electrical grid, on all levels from highest to low voltage - build more offshore wind parks - build more solar power plants - …. I could go on. We know all this: details need to be discussed and decided democratically, but fundamentally, we have to re-make this country. Houses, transport, offices, schools, industry. And you are telling people to literally sit on their hands!? That feels absolutely wrong to me, man!
it's already disrupted ....civil disobedience save us ...will save the world .? omguidences put energy into solutions ....all military budgets towards feeding all well and containment of superfund sites in place ....water is life ....The hydro fuel cell ... decentralized noncombustable electric generation ...cleans and runs on water ....recover living water.
I understand the importance of the movement as a whole being non-violent, but it is a mischaracterization of the civil rights movement, and indeed Gandhi's movement, to suggest that it happened solely because they raised an army of non-violent civil disobedient members. Both movements owe a not an insignificant portion of their success to sects of violent resistance within the larger movement. Without the Black Panthers it probably would have taken much longer for the civil rights movement to succeed, and Gandhi owes all the groundwork that was laid out before his non-violent movement even started, to the uprisings of violent resistance all across India that punctured a hole in the colonial rule, and laid the foundation for such a movement to even happen, let alone have a chance of success. A lot of scholars of political activism and movements have suggested that one reason why the climate movement has made so little ground work is that there is virtually no violent resistance sect of it. Now the purpose of such a sect is not solely to be violent. It exists to be weighed as an alternative to the peaceful movement. These movements are trying to change policy, and policy is only changed by those in power. Violent sects exist so that peaceful movements are seen in a better light, and as a better alternative, so that when people in power look at the movement in its entirety, it can see that it's better to give in to the demands of the peaceful sooner, or else the violent movement will just grow bigger and more violent. It exists to be contrasted to the peaceful whole of the movement, so that meeting the demands of the peaceful now is seen as the better option. Personally, i dont think civil disobedience alone is going to do anything because it's not a dramatic enough example and people need dramatic example to shake them out of apathy. The civil rights campaign started in '54 and ended in '68. It was a 14 year-long campaign. The climate movement got started in the 80's with NGOs like Greenpeace. It's been 43 years since then, more than 3 times the length of the entire civil rights campaign that succeeded at the end of those 14 years, in ending legalized segregation. What have we got to show for it? 43 years on and we are no closer. If this is a matter of extinction, which i do agree that it is - then it should be met with a kind of resistance that is proportional to the scale of the crisis and unfortunately, civil disobedience alone is not proportional to extinction. Violence includes property damage, and there was a book written by a Swedish author titled, "How to Blow Up a Pipeline," and the author has conceded that he believes property damage as an act of resistance to the climate catastrophe is a completely viable and legitimate response. When new pipelines are being built, when new coal mines are being built, they must be met with sabotage. The only way we are going to stop the rest of the Amazon rainforest getting destroyed, and indeed the only way we are going to rebuild it - is if we actively destroy new cattle pastures being built, as well as destroy existing ones - cuz frankly i dont think we should give a shit if people are eating less hamburger and steak. Ive read that ER is anticapitalist, but ive also read that its not at the forefront of the movement because of an apprehension that it might destroy the movement. I think this is a mistake and for two major reasons. First is that more and more of the world, especially young people, are socialist or communist - anticapitalist at the very least. The second reason is that in order to do what has to be done, in the timeframe that it has to be done in, to pay all the people that need to do it for as long as it takes, there is not enough combined wealth in all of civilization to cover the labor cost. Ive done the math. Let's consider that due to inflation, the hourly wage of any job should be at least 25$/hr and that the work that has to be done has to be engaged with 7 days a week, for 12-16 hours a day. Solving the climate crisis is THE most profound challenge humankind has ever and will ever face. I dont think building a Dyson sphere when we become advanced enough will be as difficult as this is. Because of this, because of the gravity of the situation, we will need essentially all able-bodied individuals to engage in taking action. If we include children old enough to travel with their parents and plant seeds of trees and other plant life, we are looking at roughly 6 billion people all working towards the same purpose at the same time. Just to pay these people for one single, 16hr workday - would cost $400B. Just for that one day. Thats almost half a trillion dollars. The world has an estimated combined wealth, including all bank notes, stock values, asset values, company values, anything that can be liquidated into more cash - of $1.4 Quadrillion. One month of that work is $120T. Six months of that work is $720T. After one year of this work, it would run through $1.44 Quadrillion - tens of billions of dollars more than total amount of wealth again - including liquidated assets and investments, as well as liquidating every company on the planet into cash. One year of this work and there would be no more money left - and it's going to take a whole hell of a lot longer than a year. The dissolution of capitalism should be at the forefront of the climate movement. We cannot go forward until we collectively agree to leave money behind. What we should do is tell people to stop going to work if their job is pointless towards this goal, except for those whose job already entails keeping us alive, like healthcare workers. We should inspire them to refuse payment in the form of money, and instead we should all go to the grocery store and take the food and water we need without paying, and workers of those stores should stand in solidarity with us, because we will make sure that they can take their fair share of necessities home too. We must stand up together when these multibillion dollar companies say they will close down stores due to a loss of money, and we must maintain a coordinated effort to keep the channels of production, transportation, and distribution of food and water functioning in spite of the billionaire owners turning their backs on us, and demanding these - what should be called distribution centers - be shut down. This is the only way. We have to do it, and we have to do it soon. We have to cultivate this mindset.

It might not be easy, but it's simple. The citizens of the world, not just this country, should stand up, denounce money as a form of payment, and refuse any labor unless they are granted free access to necessities. People who work jobs that are not directly related to these necessities should walk out, and never return. Those looking for work should stop looking, recognize themselves as not expendable labor, and refuse to acknowledge any of these unimportant jobs that become available. People in jobs that facilitate necessities, like food, water, clothing, healthcare, and shelter should continuing in their positions that keep the transport and distribution of these functioning. While they do that, the rest of us will guarantee that we all will get these necessities free of charge by refusing to pay for them, and standing by one another if authorities attempt to intervene.

I had wondered for years when we would experience climate-change driven mass casualty events. Thought it would take hold decades from now. I was wrong. I had been observing dramatic changes in weather over the past couple decades in my native state Ohio, US. 2019 IPCC report was, for my family, the last nail in the coffin. We all gathered together to discuss irreversable, abrupt climate change that will cut our lives short. We could not even talk about the grandchildren, the youngest two years old. Very sad occasion, indeed. Awareness of reality is where my brain resides. I idolized the Spock character from childhood forward and have always prioritized logic, science, the scientific nethod. I have my answer. The extreme climate apocolypse is here and now and happening in places constantly around the world. We are in the thick of it and every couple years, it will get worse and worse. Ebb and flow, increasing exponentially. You are absolutely correct. Billions are going to die from miriad causes...heat stroke, starvation, drowning, crush injuries, social unrest, civil war, landslides, floods, building collapses, hurricanes, tornadoes, sinkholes, smoke inhalation, fires, hate crimes, migrant discrimination, and living in denial lacking survival instincts. I always tried to imagine where the safe havens are here in North America. Seems nowhere will be safe as runaway tipping points engage and grow in intensity. The Great Lakes region might be an option. Lake Erie borders Ohio. Fresh water, very crucial. Maybe I can move there. I have built two tiny homes from two cargo trailers and have equipped them for off-grid, self-sustainance. I reside in one, travel in the smaller one. 100 sq ft and 50 sq ft. Alot of peple who want to survive will be on the move. I know that my small preparations are no match for forces of nature. The water cycle has no opinion, no empathy. It is physics. That's the best I can do though, my tiny trailers and a Toyota minivan. Learn. Research. Stay aware. Move to higher ground. Get out of the path of destruction. My contribution to the world is educating my offspring, encouraging others to respect the Earth, being vegan, and being frugal. Here in the states, our government is entirely captured by corporations and the church. Seems our votes don't make a difference and most our people are brainwashed and/or in denial and/or complacent, and/or plain ignorant and detached from reality. I am sorry for that. I will keep fighting; but I see no end in sight to the destruction of this democracy and total, toxic oligarchy and theocracy taking complete control as authoritarian regime. Our only hope of change in US is the youth. As for you, I believe the truth-tellers are gaining ground as many governments and media have to acknowledge their own personal, firsthand experiences of non-stop record-breaking heat around the world and constant catastrophic record-breaking weather events. Keep up your great work and make them "look up". Much love. Xoxo. Looking forward to this video.
You're doing the correct thing. The only thing we logically can do . IMO. We must be realistic. 30 years I've been an Activist. I still am. At some point activist must mean Effective. Effective of Change Currently we are being run down by the media as the Planet gets run down by a Juggernaught. And, the disaster is unfolding faster than projected. You can't kick climate action into the long grass when the long grass turns dustbowl. Tellingly, governments with an eye to history must document their actions, or face condemnation. .. last year's UK drought committee report says 2032 is to be the D Day of Climate Apocalypse. Just over 8 years. That's it. So much human unrest will precipitate martial law. The UN Earth Boiling Point statement was just them wanting to be able to say to any in the future "we told you so. You were warned." Most of humanity are in denial, mentally stuck in a material and debt trap that depends on the Big Con. Like all confidence tricks it depends on the victims acting out of Self Interest. The Big Con is that the World as you know it will continue. It can't even continue beyond deliveries to supermarkets. Prep for the Worst. Activate for the Best. I'm not a smug survivalist. The chances of any survival are minuscule, and visions of surviving in what kind of post Extinction Post Human world. It's almost unthinkable. Most people who survive sinking ships used to die in the lifeboats
If your or any climate activist were serious about this subject surely you should engage with the likes of Steve Koonan,Patrick Moore,William Happer etc and join get together to try and solve possibly the most important subject in the world,if it is the problem you say it is your gonna everyone on your side,
Evolution or extinction? Are we able to learn to live in harmony with each other, nature and technology including AI? Sustainability not profitability. Mindfulness and self love, respect not exploitation. Our species faces a major die off, the population is passing the peak, passing a tipping point where our population goes from exponential growth to a transition to a new sustainable relationship with the ecosystem that has sustained us up until now. That downward curve can be as steep as a cliff which falls to zero, extinction, or it can begin steeply and recover as it returns to historic levels of sustainability, pre-technology levels such as pre-Columbian America. This could lead to a selection pressure that would produce a new species of hominid, speciation. The curve could be more gentle and could include technological solutions that would level off at a population that could both live more harmoniously with nature and each other and incorporate technology that would represent an evolution into a new species of technologically enhanced humanity, cyborgs. Taking life to other planets, terraforming and evolving new species of humans who could survive other planetary ecologies is another path that will require technologies including genetic engineering to reach for the stars. Managing these changes in a moral and humane way brings hope to a future that appears very scary from our selfish and ethnocentric perspectives. Keep up the good work or as John Perkins says "Dream True" instead of living like the hero of his book "Confessions of an Economic Hitman." Be blessed, you are a blessing. Aboriginal cultures have much to teach us.
We need to push for geoengineering. We must be aware of the consequences of the melting of the Arctic. There are only ~7 years left before it melts in the summer. Without geoengineering, we won't be able to adapt for much longer. We no longer have a choice.
We don’t disrupt, we don’t have democracy and we have no alternatives to fossil fuels which doesn’t involve millions maybe billions suffering. We have waited took long and suffering is coming either we change or don’t change. That’s what this older man is telling us. All of his upper middle class preachers are doing the same. They tell us extinction is coming but the reality is extinction is here and they want to try to save their skin at the poors expense.
I'm glad Roger cited Peter Kalmus since I consider Roger, Peter and Regreta as disappointments for the climate movement. I proposed that Swiss financial society invest in renewables, and I started over 20 years ago. Why did I want the Swiss to do something? Because the Swiss are the HQ of the petrochemical industry as well as their financial system. Of course this was ignored. Over 7 years ago I I started Windyday SA. Teach students renewable jobs and uses of hemp and bamboo, and converting factories to the building blocks for that real Green New Deal. And I took action. I went into a school and they agreed their students needed to be taught and I started preparing the course. And then the fossil fuel lobby blocked it. Greta knew about that in week 2, and never talked about it. And she refused to talk about it in SMILE in Lausanne. Roger knew about it as soon as he organized Extinction Roadkill. And then they hosted Michael Moore and his Big Oil Mockumentary. (He had some good points, pointing out biomass, greenwashing and the grifters in the climate movement). I talked with Peter Kalmus when he was named as climate rep for the People's Party. He refused to present Windyday Concept to the membership and blocked me. I managed to convince a right wing political group to support it cuz of jobs and they arranged a meeting with our local OECD. They asked me if there was a climate group that supported it, and I had to say no. They showed me the door. Julia Steinberger blocked me also and is working with Renovate Switzerland. And she just gave a big talk on You Tube and said we need to stop burning fossil fuels. They are all a bunch of hypocrites.
I've been with XR for a while, but I felt suffocated by its ideological atmosphere. Activism is not for me, I guess. The appeal you make in your video didn't work for me. But I also didn't feel accepted and required. But mostly, I was disappointed about XR's strategy. I had expected a much more 'hands-on' approach that seeks paths to carve out solutions from what exists instead of to destroy everything and start from scratch, because what I observe is that many activists want to use XR as a tool to do just that. As a result, they will find the citizens oppose them. Proof of that is the ineffectiveness of XR, it's limited attraction to activists, while at the same time, a clear majority of the population is actually supporting policies to save the planet. Am I blaming XR for the failure to stop the ecological crisis? No, but, in retrospect, we may observe that XR has not been effective in its strategy against governments. And so have scientists, especially those that are involved in policy-making and democratic processes. My point is that a strategy to stop the crisis is negotiable and absolutely viable through proper legislation. Because if we admit that there is no solution now, why could there be a solution tomorrow? So if we turn this around, it means that if we admit that there is a solution tomorrow, that same solution also exists today. And this is exactly the case: many solutions do wait on a shelf to be executed, implemented and accepted by the general public as soon as they arrive. And they will become mainstream when the price is right as quick as mobile phones have become main stream, in like five to ten years. Why do these solutions don't come to the market? Because there is no one paying their scaling up. They need a final, tiny, push. In many comments, I have proposed to do the simplest thing possible and I was mocked for that: Ban CO2 (and methane). Simply make the production of CO2 a crime. Not now, but, let's say, in 10-15 years. In that span of time, industries and agriculture can change their ways. To me, that seems enough. The world can be carbon free in 2035! (and start removing the present carbon from the atmosphere...) That is the exact push that is needed and governments can make that happen if XR shows them how. The simplest policies can have the deepest impact. Even if we only TRY to ban icarbon emissions the effect will be MASSIVE. It's also a law that everyone understands because we all understand that most modern human activity requires CO2 while production without CO2 requires a different way of production. Simple. The point of a ban that it's both a goal AND a strategy. It puts the responsibility where it's most logical and most needed: at the emitters of carbon: the power plants, the industry and the cattle farmers. They, together emit like 70-80% of all carbon while private households only emit like 20% through heating and cars. There will be no need for negotiations because everyone, every business will be treated equally. We only need to discuss the consequences: the extra cost of zero-carbon production or whether a business can continue production while compensating its emissions. But XR is not interested, while it's the closest to what is needed: NO MORE CO2! The comments were clear: too disruptive. I thought I was listening to a spokesperson of the Conservative Party. We don't really need to discuss democracy or capitalism; at the core of the matter are only a few things: greenhouse gasses, biodiversity, water, and waste. These four issues affect the atmo- and biosphere so decisively that intervention is needed. If we ban CO2, methane, plus pesticides, and unrecyclable materials we're done. DONE! Since Roman times, we know the power of legislation. It's the crowbar to crack and change the system without destroying it. We have science on our side. The only thing we need is to get the law on our side. Any questions?
Hello Roger. Do tell everyone about the Aerosol Masking Effect and what the consequences of that would be if we reduce emissions in the search for reducing CO2 output? Guy Mcpherson states he discussed that with you. Tell the truth was Xtinction Rebellion's motto. Please do or share the reason you told Guy that you don't.
Just search "tipping points Nature" and read what's published by Nature (or Science, or any serious publication). Many interesting things were published in June!
This is not nonsense, but it will be a gradual catastrophe, a rolling emergency, no, not an emergency but a slow rolling crisis or series of disasters like crop failings, weather extremes, famines and the odd disaster, like hurricanes, tornadoes, cyclones ! Each one will be bad for those in or underneath these events, but life will go on for many others until it comes for them whenever. This will cost society as a whole a lot of money, but individuals may survive and even prosper; others won't ! NO, it is not a 'total effing disaster' except for those affected locally ! Yes, populations will diminish, but others will survive, some even thrive, depending on where they are !
Looks pretty abrupt to me. SHTF territory. Off the charts ocean temperatures lately, off Florida, and other parts of the Atlantic ocean. And dramatic loss of Antarctic sea ice.

With this predicament, is not the hardest problem human psychology, which is a predicament in itself? As an example, try telling people we ALL must drive 4 cylinder cars, which should have been the norm starting decades ago, with certain exceptions, of course. Selfishness, and greed would have made it impossible to pull off. People in modern societies equate their wants as entitlements, and obligations to the collective benefit of all, are the last thing on peoples minds. I suspect that hunter gatherers understood the value of obligations, but that may as well be ancient history, and now beyond our grasp, in a world of 8 billion plus, most of which are just trying to make ends meet.

But I've followed these and similar debates relating to economics and 'renewables' VERY closely over the past 4 years.

Yeah, been protesting for 11 days in the NL now! XR growing stronger!
Thank you. Much love.

And well said.
Actually business as usual is jumping off the cliff. And drastic change is the attempt to avoid the cliff.
Please roger, say that people are dying now not just in the global south, but in Europe and Northern Europe… now not the future
Thankyou so much Roger !
A lot of people are depressed about the climate crisis, or in a deep denial that causes a lot of stress.

The climate deniers have become selfish, self-absorbed sociopaths at this point. They have become the enemy of not just humanity but of the biosphere and their own safety. Everyone must go to the limits of the actions they are willing to do. If you care about the future of humanity and of all life on Earth, then you absolutely must give up as much of the modern lifestyle as you can and reject materialism, capitalism, and the idea of having tons of children, if any.

In 1982, Nasa/Sandia Labs published 'Status of the Magma Energy Project'
"The current magma energy project is assessing the engineering feasibility of extracting thermal energy directly from crustal magma bodies. Current status of the engineering program and future plans are described."
(Current global energy demand is around 600 quads.)
I do not understand why greens have not demanded application of magma energy technology that could supply the world's energy needs carbon free, plus provide power for desalination, irrigation, recycling and carbon capture.
Could you explain why you are demanding we 'Just Stop Oil' - rather than Just Go Magma?
One has to stop the fire burning down the house before one decides among the best designs and materials for rebuilding that house.

“the gandhian, martin luther king, EXTENTION REBELLION tradition”…. the gall…
But it is already too late. Let’s party.
And animals. Animal rights are abused on a huge scale all around the world causing one of the biggest factors in climate breakdown.
Dear Roger,
How do we transition to renewables?
How will it be achieved?
In what year will it be achieved?
What is the requirement?
How many wind turbines?
How many solar panels?
How many hydro dams?
How many whatever?
Where will it all be?
When will it be ready?
Keep in mind that this must be done worldwide. Also keep in mind that overall energy consumption in 2050 will be 50% more than it was in 2020.
What happens when there’s no wind?
What happens when it’s too windy?
What happens when there’s no sun?
If batteries are the solution-
What capacity is needed ?
How many are needed?
Where will they be?
When will they be installed?
If pumped hydro is the solution-
What capacity is needed ?
How many are needed?
Where will they be?
When will they be installed?
Also to be kept in mind -
Renewables currently provide 11% of energy. (It’s been that way for years.)
Hydro is 7%.
Wind is 2%
Biomass is 1%
Solar is 1%.
We have to consume less, brother…. A lot less.
@elephantintheroom5678 - Solar provides just 1% of global energy. It’s useless.

I must say that I find the idea of 10’000 capable people spending days sitting on a Dutch motor way and being arrested - deeply wrong.
Because it’s a huge waste of resources and time. We know what needs to be done in the Netherlands:
- insulate homes
- build out the electrical grid, on all levels from highest to low voltage
- build more offshore wind parks
- build more solar power plants
- ….

I am a lay person, but avid scientist at heart and I have been consuming all things climate change for a couple decades.
Since 2019, I have increased my consumption of peer-reviewed climate findings and I make it a point to pay attention to what is happening with weather in my region and around the nation and world.
In many comments, I have proposed to do the simplest thing possible and I was mocked for that:
Ban CO2 (and methane).
1 percent will sort it😂
You have to appeal to peoples self interest most people care about their own small worlds.
Hello Roger. Do tell everyone about the Aerosol Masking Effect and what the consequences of that would be if we reduce emissions in the search for reducing CO2 output? Guy Mcpherson states he discussed that with you.

And dramatic loss of Antarctic sea ice.
i don't understand, what's the problem with extinction?
Really? What MIGHT the problem be?
You'll die. 😂
@@NashHinton as did 99.9% of species ever to exist here. bombastic news.
no more homo sapiens bs, other species get to experience earth without a nightmare hyperpredator. count me out, then count me in.
@@JonathanLoganPDX yeah, that was kinda my question. so what's the answer, why is it a problem, truly?
@@real_pattern I don't understand your question. Are you asking: Why is +2.0C or +3.0C a problem? If not, what's your question specifically?

As an example, try telling people we ALL must drive 4 cylinder cars, which should have been the norm starting decades ago, with certain exceptions, of course. Selfishness, and greed would have made it impossible to pull off.
People in modern societies equate their wants as entitlements, and obligations to the collective benefit of all, are the last thing on peoples minds. I suspect that hunter gatherers understood the value of obligations, but that may as well be ancient history, and now beyond our grasp, in a world of 8 billion plus, most of which are just trying to make ends meet.

Most people in France don't like XR, quite a lot even hate it. Not the right strategy imo.
And what would you suggest as the best strategy?
@@JonathanLoganPDXWhat do you think?
@@NashHinton Roger is on the right track. It's not about liking or not liking, it's about raising awareness, telling the truth, inspiring the conversation, and forcing society to face our existential moment. XR did this very well.
Give all your money to something like MEER. How many people would be willing to give away all their money? It's one thing to spend a night at the police station but it's another to give all your money..
@@Battery-kf4vu is that what you are doing?
Oh.😮 Nothing serious then.
The end of the UK wouldn't be so bad but I'd like to keep France. 😏
