Absolutely love my '97 Tommy Kaira M20b/WRX wagon. Very Porschey indeed, and ultra-cheap to fix and upgrade. Alloy front control arms - $200 a pair. Alloy bonnet from an RA - $115. Alloy bashplate - $50. Replacement foglights - $140. Wide-mouth, cat-less downpipe - $200. New TD04 Turbo - $700 fitted. 215/35 R18 NS20 tyres - under $700 a set. Driver's seat bolsters rebuilt - $180. Replacement front wheel guard liners - $50. STI front anti-roll bar and hardrace droplinks - $100. Chassis brace x2 - $160. Brake Master Cylinder brace - $75. Lovely KYB rear shocks - $400. And it goes like a scolded weasel, and handles like a WRC winner. :D
Thanks for these videos! I have an MY99 WRX I bought new in 1998, only 157k on the clock and (apparently) I drive like a granny, so it's still got a ton of life left in it yet. I'm still on the original factory clutch, rear pads and rotors. Front pads and rotors were replaced by Subaru when the car had about 30k on the clock, and I'm still not sure why. Haven't had to replace them since, in any case. The only things I've ever had to replace are the AFM, the fuel pump and the radiator (twice). I'm hoping it'll last until my seventies, at which point everything will probably be electric and self-driving. Every now and then I remind myself that this 20-year-old car is now older than every bomb I've owned since I started driving in 1985.
Big port heads in the MY99/00 WRX. Simple mods will make these work with AVCS from later model WRX/STi. I'm running MY99 Forester GT heads with AVCS from my MY02 STi as the Forester heads are the same casting as the MY99/00 WRX and are much bigger than the MY02-05 STi. ;)
Love these videos. But you mention fitting slightly bigger injectors... how much bigger and can they run on factory Ecu without any fuel map changes. !!!!!
Hey Brett! Very Informative Video! I drive a 99 STi RA. Stock EJ20, but I have a few upgrades...I have switched to a Link G4 ECU DW850cc injectors DW300 pump AEM Methanol Injection Kit gtx3071 w/ .63ar 3" Rotated Down Pipe Rotated Up Pipe Stock Ex Manifold FMIC TiAl 44mm EWG TiAl Q 50mm BOV 06 STi 2.5l Oil Pan Killer B Pick-up tube & Baffle. My Question is, how much boost can i run safe & reliably? Right now i am just running WG pressure(16psi or 1.1bar) but i am not making very much power at all, and boost doesnt even hit until around 5000rpms. Do you think i can safely run 1.3bar on the stock block? Assuming that the Tune is good.
Guys, if the MAF is exhibiting problems (idling fluctuations) can the car be driven until an appointment can be scheduled with the Subaru garage or must the car be parked until the MAF is swapped? Appreciate your help to the Subaru fam. Thanks & Regards. Ciaran
With keeping the stock air box, does that apply more to 99/2000 gc8’s? I have an 06 wrx with a cold air intake, car has been tuned, is it better to run factory air box?
I would like to reach 400 whp or less, now I looking for a crankshaft. Do you recommend using JDM standard for a 350whp crankshaft? I can not find the nitride crankshaft with Center Thrust Bearing #3 for my GC8 version 1 EJ20 CDB .. After 2000 year model there are many offers for rear Thrust Bearing # 5 only... what kind of GC8 EJ20 crankshaft you use?
If you have a my 99 wrx then u have a ej205 and it does NOT have forged pistons. only the ver5 & ver6 sti have forged pistons... After that all the ej207 are hypereutectic
No, it had an EJ207. The V5 GF8 WRX Wagon had the EJ205, but the GC had the EJ207. But you are correct in saying that it did not have factory forged pistons like the STi variant.
+Zachary Brombeiss No, the MY99 WRX has a ej205, (ej205dw1ke) NOT an ej207. the wrx "RA" had a (ej207dw1ke) BUT, The only GC8 that came with the ej207 AND forged internals the ver5/6 STi; ej207dw1pr/pj & ej207dw2pr/pj i own a Ver5 STi RA

Rebuilding a 1999 Legacy twin turbo (EJ208) and found this info useful too.

nice mod
The guys making the noises in the back😂
Wow these videos are amazing. They help me so much, thank you.
thanks
Hello I was wondering if the 99-00 version 5 and 6 ej207 had forged internals
Fantastic video again, thanks
thanks
thank you for making these
Another great vid Brett.
thanks
nice video 👍
good questions waiting for the answer😁

any injector change need a ECU re tune
Please do one based on gda-gdb chassis
awesome video.
Great video Brett, what's your thoughts on converting the fuel system to parallel delivery? Is it worth doing on a mildly modified ej20? Thanks
yes, we started doing that MANY years ago only needed on high HP engines
great vid

Does anyone know exactly what the factory boost is?
I have read 13.5 to 14.7
Which is it?
Hey Brett....Baaaaaaaaheee🤣 Great vid bro.

depends on teh design of the new intake you use and the way it was tuned. Often the OEM box is actually better ;)
how much power EJ20K CDB JDM stock crankshaft can hold?
I building EJ20 CDB with forged internal, but stock crankshaft, its good or no for 350+whp?
its not the power that damages the block, its a whole raft of conditions that its not easy tolist here

what kind of GC8 EJ20 crankshaft you use?
how much would that engine cost too build and install ?
Subaru Impreza turbo cars are very expensive to maintain. Lovely to drive tho.
MRT Performance Can you please tell me if the MY99 EJ207 in the WRX has factory forged pistons? Or just the STi? It would be greatly appreciated.

i own a Ver5 STi RA
+NePdXploit my99 wrx has an ej207. it's not the wrx ra version either cuz i dont have dccd option in mine
+Jenn Warren Hey Jenn. Australian STIs from MY02 to MY05 have EJ207 with forged pistons. We were lucky.
Lol
