Went with Dobinsons 3way adjustable MRR's on the 4runner. I think Dobinsons are highly under-rated. Additionally, great (long) service life before a rebuild with such an advanced system!
What about as far as hauling low to heavy trailer or goosenecks, will the reservoir shocks help or make any difference compared to the singular tubed shocks?
Not really. The main benefit of an external reservoir is for additional heat dissipation, however if you are just towing heavy on the road, your shocks probably are not getting hot. Or at the very least a good monotube shock without a reservoir would not get hot enough to fade.
I may have asked already on another of your videos. My truck is 2020 F550 had upfitter install Kelderman 4 link air suspension (not lifted). So, air suspension front and rear. But i didn't get shocks or Reservoir shocks. Kelderman does not yet make their own raptor shocks yet for my truck. My main concern is when not pulling my 23K RV. Truck empty ride quality is not as good as pulling with. Bad road may be the problem but would Reservoir do something for me?
not necessarily a matter of reservoirs or not, but a properly tuned shock, and utilizing airbags also require a specific type of shock to improve feel. We could get you setup on a custom tuned Fox or King shock that would be best. I cant think of an off-the-shelf shock to recommend in a youtube comment, but hit us up at 213-433-3616 call/text and we can help out
Where do you draw the line between a remote and a higher end monotube? Not bilsteins, like a 2.5 or ome mt64. I do forest roads at reasonably higher speeds, but not desert whoops and jumps. Ive killed a few 5100s and im over replacing them. Do i bite the bullet on 2.5 remotes or go the in-between like the mt64 or fox/Elka/icon 2.5? Difference of almost 2k here in Canada. (3k vs 5k)
If you are blowing up 2.0s, you might still be at the limit of an IFP monotube 2.5. If you can swing it, an external reservoir is probably up your alley. Truthfully although the stuff out in the desert looks more extreme, the washboard surfaces of most forest roads will often get shocks hotter as they are only using a small percentage of their travel, but cycling at much more rapid rates.
If you overheat a shock absorber like a 5100 from a long washboarded road, will the performance return after cooling down or has it lost a lot of life or worn out at that point?
For a 4runner w/KDSS I am bringing the car to Puerto Vallarta where I'll be going up and down steep wet cobblestone roads. I was recommended the Eibach reservoir shocks. On your website KDSS isn't on the Eibach as compatible. Is there a reason or would you recommend something else?
They fit the same on KDSS and non KDSS models so there is nothing to worry about there. The only reason sometimes you will see fitment vary on KDSS and Non KDSS models is front reservoir placement or lift settings to avoid lean on non KDSS models. The Eibachs 2.0 coilovers are a threaded body so you have more than enough finite adjustment to get it level side to side, and they do not have external reservoirs.
Having a difficult time deciding what to go with. I have a 22 4wd F150 that I use as a daily driver. Usually only go off trail 1-2x a month to camp in SoCal and NorCal. I do spend a lot of time driving up and down mountains during the winter for snowboarding. Thoughts on whether getting reservoirs is worth it? Looking at the either the Eibach stage 2 lift or 2R which is about a $240 difference.
From the sounds of things, your shocks will not even get warm let alone hot enough to show any amount of fade, so you can skip the reservoir for its intended purpose, but Eibach does use a little more linear valving on their PTR resi shocks, so they are a touch more comfortable at least off road. You likely will feel little difference on the road though.
I have an 86 blazer with a 6" lift. In your opinion would upgrading from stock to any type of reservoir shock make a big enough difference in ride quality to justify spending the money? Right now the ride is very stiff and hops on bumps
I’d say it depends on if your ride is hard because of shocks you have now or if your truck is sprung hard. If it’s the shocks, they may help, if it’s because of the springs, probably not.
Reservoir shocks often are tuned the same or quite similar to their IFP Monotube counterparts so you probably will not see much difference in normal ride quality. The main benefit of an external reservoir design is their increased cooling capacity to keep the shocks more consistent, so if you drive it really hard for extended periods off road, you they will be far less likely to fade. I am sure a good shock, reservoir or otherwise, will help, but if the rig is hopping over bumps, there is a good chance the springs are too stiff and are causing most of the issues.
They are kept at the 6 location, but Bilstein is pretty clear about how to position things in their instructions productdesk.cart.bilsteinus.com//media/products/bilstein/E4-WM5-Y764A00_1.pdf
just bought a set of 6112s from you guys to pair with the 5160s i bought from yall. looking forward to their arrival so i can install and get out there.
they're not necessary, it does help prevent some debri from hitting the shaft - which is the main concern. The wiper seal on the Bilstein is really nice and keeps dirt out of the shock, but pitting on the shaft from rock hits is the main concern for the most part.
i have a 2022 2500 AT4 that was has the Detroit Wreckers wheel lift system on there (a lot of weight in the rear) they installed fox shocks already when the system was installed. However for the front i was wondering if a reservoir was going to be the way to go to make the ride more comfortable, or what? I do drive fast when not towing, and occasionally go off road depending on the situation
The reservoir helps with heat dissipation. So when the shocks are cycling quickly, this would help keep it cooler. It'll still get warm but it won't as warm or hot. The comfort is going to be about the same.
Depends on the vehicle. You can use your website and put your vehicle in the fitment chart. Then use the filter to filter out lift amount and select 6"
When it comes to comfort, firmness or stiffness, it will be quite subjective as everyone deems these feelings differently. Contact us directly and we can give some insight based on what we have ran or currently running on any of our rigs.
Great video.. what are your thoughts on the dust cover on shocks? Some people remove the rubber/plastic citing concerns with retaining dirt or moisture.
Personally on our rigs, we do not run any boots of any sorts. We do find that having a boot does make it more difficult to keep simple cleaning maintenance on the shocks much more difficult. The boot will still trap various partials which is hard to remove without removing the actual boot itself.
Just tested on mobile in app and browser on Android and Iphone as well as on desktop, and the audio is working just fine. Tons of comments before you of people who had no issues hearing it, so I would try clearing your cookies and cache and trying it again.
ive run the shit out of the Bilstein 5160 on my Silverado and they are so much better than the Ranchos. Ive also driven the Icons on a 2020 Tacoma. The Bilsteins are just... Better.
My experience is on rocky ass Arizona trails going pretty damn fast. Ive pretty much maxed the travel on all corners but havent had any bottoming issues. this is on 34.5" Yok G003 on a 1500 Silverado 6" lift moderately loaded
@@ShockSurplus well i just blew a Bilstein so I think my reference is biased. I think the Icons rode like a road shock even when doing fast rocky trails so compression was a bit tight, rebound was fine. i expected a softer ride. i am going to upgrade i just dont know what to. im talking to warranty right now i hope we can figure it out

Model year is a big factor, but Eibach Pro Trucks, if available are a great option

Fox's seal packages are consistent across their lines, and typically have the same intervals for suggested rebuilds.
