@mistersurrealist i MISS HER she was my fave besides Don Rickles... 2 of the funniest people I have ever watched and made me always laugh... I get them!!!!
Extremely prophetic. Which is why i'm reviewing her material. She spoke the truth, in a subtle way as well as fast delivery which flew over most peoples ability to hear what the real message was. And in the end they killed her for speaking the truth, another great american hero.
It is well known that Carson was Joan Rivers' mentor having had her on his show dozens of times going back to 1965 including occasionally guest hosting during his vacations. River credited her February 17, 1965 appearance as her breakthrough. Carson said to her on the air "you're gonna be a star". Watch some of other clips of her on Carson's show including when she was rather flat and you can see his mentorship--buoying her, feeding her straight lines, etc., In October 1986 long after Rivers had become a big success beyond her appearances on Carson's show, she was offered her own late night show on the newly formed Fox network. However she accepted the same time slot as Carson in direct competition with him. That is what Carson regarded as a betrayal of their personal friendship. I wonder if she has ever publicly explained why she accepted that time slot given their personal friendship. She does acknowledge she did not even tell him in advance about the offer from Fox to seek his blessing or consultation or even hear his opposition. This suggests to me she knew her decision to accept the offer would be problematic for their friendship. The show did not last even a year as she and her husband were both fired in May 1987. Three months later her husband committed suicide which she blamed on his "humiliation" by Fox. Apparently, Carson did not send condolences or attend the funeral. There appears to be shortcomings on both sides--her greed and his unforgiveness. It seems to me that the network was using her relationship with Carson for ratings and she fell for it. Carson in his unforgiveness banned her from his show and got his successors--Leno and O'Brien to do the same.

Who the hell is O'Brien? Leno And Fallon succeeded Carson. And Rivers betrayed Carson and their long-standing agreement. Don't feel the least bit sorry for her.
Adding that NBC/Carson strung Rivers along re renewing her appearance contract just before her taking the Fox deal which probably contributed to her decision. She likely felt that she was being disrespected at that point and therefore less concerned with hurting Carson's feelings. Wrongs on both sides unfortunately.
