It always drives me crazy when people compare Joan Rivers to the female comedians of today, especially Kathy Griffin. Joan Rivers was so much more than a Comedian. She was also one hell of an interviewer, writer, and businesswoman. NONE of today's comedians come even close to the talent and skills she had. She can't be compared. She was in a league of her own.
She was disciplined, like the best of her generation. Today's comedians have the rockstar complex. They want to be adored without having to acquire a skill that merits the adoration of others.
Ms Rivers never fully got the flowers she deserved. Ms Rivers, along with the likes of Mr Carlin, should have been awarded the Mark Twain Prize, Kennedy Center Honors , and much more. Ms Rivers is a true LEGEND, she brought us so much joy and laughter for over 50 years and blessed us with her wit, charm and beauty. An amazing pioneer...
Such a relaxed interview. This is the first time I’ve seen Joan just enjoy “ being” instead of having to keep the jokes coming… She didn’t have to be “on”. And this is the first time I’ve seen Dick Cavett take on a little bit more of the conversation, instead of working so hard to engage his guest. They were very good for each other and I can see why they were friends.
I always loved Joan Rivers. She was a very smart woman. I think the thing I love the most about her is the feeling I had and still have, of being a personal friend of hers. She made me feel like we were personal friends through the years. I love her and have always rooted for her.
You can just tell from this interview that Joan & Dick were good friends. That's why friends are so important when anyone goes through a tragedy. You need that support only a friend can provide.
Wow Joan Rivers was wonderful! I think she is and always has been underrated, as are most hugely talented women. Now she has gone I suspect it won't be long before she is widely acknowledged as a giant of comedy. A shame she had to die to make it happen! God bless her, an amazing human being.
Had the privilege of her calling me up on stage. A fantastic comedian, human and woman. I know of no one else who could be sarcastic while being kind. Yes her audience could never not.love her. Beautiful and brilliant

"Enter Talking" IS one of the best show biz autobiographies I've ever read. Joan was a summa cum laude college student - very, very smart, a fantastic writer. The book is a page-turner, and it was a bestseller. This interview is very inspiring for me.
Amazing two people who are different. great minds and the mutual respect, and Joan exercising her listening and conversation skills and love, kindeness , humour and honesty. Joan is missed and her beautiful heart. God bless her soul.
Poor Dick, he’s struggled with his own demons ie depression all his life and it shown on his face. At 16:56 you can see it in his face when talking about Edgar,s quote “one of us has to die”.
she became more outrageous with age, here you can sense her more centre and formal, like a normal person, but in her lasts days she was more out and less afraid of saying what ever came to her mouth
One of the most compelling artists, so humble, honest and extremely charismatic. Lovely rapport with Dick Cavett. I want to read her book after this. Thank you so much for this post, I loved it! No one will ever match Joan Rivers. She was in a league of her own❤️
Loved her! Smart, hilarious, chic, engaging, tenacious, trail blazing. Wish she had left her face alone. It was lovely and unique. Full of character. She chose conformity and plastic and ended up looking fake and frozen.
Old friends, came from nothing, became everything, and not afraid to say a price was paid, but on we go. Lesson for everyone, showbiz or not. And you'd better find the laughs along way; soon as you can laugh at it, it can't get you.
Joan was a knockout from her debut, very beautiful, she went to far with the plastic surgery but she was still a knockout pretty woman till the end, not to mention a brilliant and talented lady, always gorgeous and hilarious. Miss you Joan.
🥰 she was a beautiful kind loving giving energetic intelligent lady and the plastic surgery made her happy so who cares about it? She teased about it all the time so as long as she was happy why do people keep complaining? She made us happy and she died because of somebody’s stupidity or worse. We love you Joan! Thank you for so much, You wonderful lady!!!🥰😂😘😍
Dear Wonderful ,Lovely 😍 ❤ Joan you ❤ don't know how Wonderful you were, GOD Bless you 🙏 superb I hope your eternity is wonderful, love what you did, miss you 💖💜🥰💜💙
Did the audience leave for most of this interview? Either they're hanging on to their every word or the jokes go over their heads. Nowadays, floor managers would hit the applause sign , but back back in 1991 quiet conversation was still the norm. Delightfully refreshing.
most people enjoy quick laughs i guess, i assume that what following he has are very loyal though, i find him charming and warm better than letterman or even johnny imo
You don`t know. She says they had separated. He might have been taking the fall from that tv deal that fell through. It might have been a hit. I heard he was at some hotel in Philadelphia. I met Rivers once, when I worked for Barbara Walters. Rivers was a guest on the `Emphasis` radio show. Did not think she was as driven as she was but the Facelift says alot. She was furious when the chat show deal fell through. Probably blamed Edgar So whether or not it was a hit, she was wrong in separating as it obviously devastated her husband.
Joan Rivers had WIT. She had intelligence that invited people to laugh WITH her. So many comedians (Lucille Ball and tribe) invite you to laugh AT them. Not good.
Edgar had just had open heart surgery, a bypass. It is well known there can be psychological changes after such, sometimes negative ones. Sadly they left that out.
In reply to the guy who says Tomlin was gay and would never sleep with a man..I think when she started out she was straight or bi. She was sweet, stuck by her friends. The owner of The Blue Angel or some Greenwich Village Club had a crush on Tomlin and used to let her raid the frig. When others began the owner got mad. Tomlin said `If I eat, my friends eat`. Good Stuff!
So sad that she was never able to see or recognize her own individual beauty & repeatedly had her faced carved into over & over when ultimately the most attractive version of her was BEFORE any surgeries.
Funny she got canned from Fox. She said that Fox had less than 10 affiliates. So basically 100,000 people out of 250 million saw her show and Fox gauged her whole worth by that? She's a smarter comedian so of course only top and bottom 20% of viewer will watch, but how could many of them watch with so few affiliates?

Seth Mcfarlane!
Kathy Griffin wouldn't exist without what Joan Rivers did for comedy, especially women in comedy.
She was disciplined, like the best of her generation. Today's comedians have the rockstar complex. They want to be adored without having to acquire a skill that merits the adoration of others.
Just amazing no one like her .I miss her but I know she is making everyone happy in haven .
Brennan Smith if Kathy Griffin didn’t exist 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🤤🤤🤤
I love Dick Cavett & his interviews! He is a class act just like Joan was

This woman pulled me out of the pit of depression better than any medication, for that alone she deserves all those awards.
Joan was pure class and talent. The best.
She's wonderful. Just being herself, no jokes, no artifice, is so tender. She's so real and present and I'm glad Dick was so respectful.
Joan was in a class all by herself. She was a hurt soul who did therapy on herself 😁 bravo Joan, life well lived
Well put!
That was such a beautiful conversation between two friends. REAL friends. Thank you Mr Cavett❣️
i cant agree more
So glad to see a serious interview from Joan for a change. This one came from the heart.
Joan Rivers was great but she wasn't the pioneer of women stand up comics. Phyllis Diller was.

He is technically the guest, after all.
Funniest woman ever.
RIP Joan, you're dearly missed.
I've never seen Cavett so relaxed. I didn't know they were friends. Joan is missed more as time goes by
I disagree with the first sentence, as Dick was always this good.
Dick Cavett was always chill, and cool - sincere, honest, and down to earth.
@@gramirez72 of course. What I said was he was extra relaxed because she was a friend. You never saw him being more formal?
@@graxjpg Of course he was good! What I said was he was extra relaxed because she was a friend.
Rivers was all work all the time. Her and Rickles are by far the two who had the most magical touch.
I always loved Joan Rivers. She was a very smart woman. I think the thing I love the most about her is the feeling I had and still have, of being a personal friend of hers. She made me feel like we were personal friends through the years. I love her and have always rooted for her.
I can’t think of any comedian who comes up to the standard of Joan Rivers. She is one smart cookie!
It's fascinating to see this side of Joan. She is very warm. And she and Dick seem like they really like each other. Nice
She was so smart. I hope to be as bright and classy as this lady when im older.
You can just tell from this interview that Joan & Dick were good friends. That's why friends are so important when anyone goes through a tragedy. You need that support only a friend can provide.
oh Joan was the best, still miss her, she was funny and blunt in a way I wish more people were. I got to meet her once and she was very nice.

glamdolly20 AMEN
Underrated?? Definitely not. Everybody knew for decades and decades that she was a giant of comedy.
@@dankelly8783 I agree! And it was so well deserved!

What an amazing interview - such friends and polar opposites in many ways. And they brought out the humanity in each other. Brilliant
He's a great interviewer, very attentive and asks real thoughtful questions
I love these two people!
There will never be another Joan Rivers. The funniest woman to ever live.
I LOVE YOU MY DEAR JOAN!!! YOU ARE ONE CLASS ACT!!!
"Enter Talking" IS one of the best show biz autobiographies I've ever read. Joan was a summa cum laude college student - very, very smart, a fantastic writer. The book is a page-turner, and it was a bestseller. This interview is very inspiring for me.
"Everbody is the star of their own movie." - Words of wisdom indeed.
WHEN I WATCH HER I STARE AT HER (HAIR, MAKE-UP, FASHION SENSE, ETC.). SOPHISTICATION, ELEGANCE & CLASS
COULD YOU SPEAK UP? I CAN'T HEAR YOU!
These two are splendid together.thank you for sharing.
The Madonna joke at the end was hilarious. RIP Joan. Gone nearly five years now.
Joan looked beautiful at this time in her life.
Miss you Joan.
Amazing two people who are different. great minds and the mutual respect, and Joan exercising her listening and conversation skills and love, kindeness , humour and honesty. Joan is missed and her beautiful heart. God bless her soul.
She was so chic😥
I LOVE THESE TWO SO MUCH...AMAZING TO MY HEART
I never knew she had such a rough life. She was and is strong as hell and funny as fuck.
Joan Rivers was one and only… it never existed… and never be another one!!!! Never!!!!
She is so interesting
Poor Dick, he’s struggled with his own demons ie depression all his life and it shown on his face. At 16:56 you can see it in his face when talking about Edgar,s quote “one of us has to die”.
I love joan rivers. she's absolutely the most amazing woman.
She's Gorgeous!
I remember Joan Rivers funny missed
I love Joan Rivers. ❤😂
Ob Joan Rivers wusste dass sie ein großes Idol in Deutschland und in der Schweiz war ?
Tolle Frau !!!
In Schweden auch!
I'm a straight man and I love Joan. Those guys were a bad audience, who the hell doesn't love Joan Rivers.
Great interview ❤️ Miss Joan 😢
Joan is the best comedian ever! It's nice to watch a talk show host who isn't spending his time hating Trump!
That was my thought too...
....slightly painful to have to point out the obvious: if it’s 1991, wth would ‘they’ (or ANYone for that matter) ‘be talking about Trump’...??
Beautiful interview.
she became more outrageous with age, here you can sense her more centre and formal, like a normal person, but in her lasts days she was more out and less afraid of saying what ever came to her mouth
I MISS JOAN !!!
If you saw her on game shows way back when she knew every answer, a big reader.
I love Joan so much always

Dick Cavett ,always a class act !
They both look great...

I loved joan.. she felt like she was the accepting grandmother I wish I had for being gay. Her humor and comedy was my escape
I use to watch fashion police just for the laughs Joan brought.
What a great interview....I never heard the stories about Edger...
CLASS ACT - THE WHOLE F-----KN THING LOVE THIS CONVO
One of a kind.
She was actually a very intelligent woman
🥰 she was a beautiful kind loving giving energetic intelligent lady and the plastic surgery made her happy so who cares about it? She teased about it all the time so as long as she was happy why do people keep complaining?
She made us happy and she died because of somebody’s stupidity or worse. We love you Joan! Thank you for so much, You wonderful lady!!!🥰😂😘😍

I think its the former. Joan isn't there to deliver punchlines, there is some humor there, but I think they are just really listening
Dick Cavett was the best at interviewing. I don't know why he didn't really have a huge following. It's strange why.
most people enjoy quick laughs i guess, i assume that what following he has are very loyal though, i find him charming and warm better than letterman or even johnny imo
If only she had left her face like this. She looked a million bucks during these years!!
'I thought you did these things on stage' 😂
20:58 “let’s put him out of the pain”… heartbreaking. I’m still crying.
Long live freedom and democratic equality
I had no idea Joan had such a rough life at times. Especially about her husband Edgar. The times I have seen her always seemed so upbeat.
what a force of nature she was, so clever, so HONEST
I love that she thinks Catholics have a the best deal when it comes to blessing buildings🤣🤣
WOOOW... he looks JUUUUST like George Bush in this clip! 😂😂😂
Soooo much like him, I was waiting to see if anyone else saw that!
Joan ndick a class act😂🇨🇦
Funny and great women!!!
The good one they cancelled. Dick was the best of them all
A survivor. The creeps they have out lasted. I love both of them.
The biggest sin of og tv is not giving Joan a 4 hour time slot when she appeared ❤
I'm glad the round helmet hair style was gone by this year. She was funny.
Cavet a genius talker
Everybody "got" Joan, except for Hollywood.
wow- comments on this vid really says it all but yea FML i love this

Joan Rivers had WIT.

He face was so thin before she went crazy with the plastic surgery/botox.
Here Dick Cavett looks like George HW Bush
Edgar had just had open heart surgery, a bypass.
It is well known there can be psychological changes after such, sometimes negative ones.
Sadly they left that out.
Holy

Respec' 2 DC!
In which Cavett interviews himself...
Haven't we all had fleeting thoughts of choosing our death. Individuals make their on choices - we are only responsible for our own actions.
@7:59 and he found out you were gay?
He looks gay
Why does it matter?????????????????????????
😂😂. Yeah that was a funny tongue tie.
So sad that she was never able to see or recognize her own individual beauty & repeatedly had her faced carved into over & over when ultimately the most attractive version of her was BEFORE any surgeries.
Kind of like Michael Jackson.

Lol...I too hate dust jackets. I should at least save them somewhere for my estate sale.
Six dollars a book; when the hell was this interview?!
...nearly THIRTY years ago....:)
It was her royalty per sale of book, not the list price.
