  • I see a lot of chatter online about cheap mic solutions for UA-camrs and interviewers. Thing is I was always taught that a microphone was for life, not a thing that only lasted as long as the internal battery or driver support. But are professional grade microphones out of reach for the man on the street? The answer is no!
Studio grade microphones can be obtained for less than the microphones marketed at UA-camrs and streamers. You just need to know what you are looking for. In this video I show you how to obtain two of my favourite and longest used mics, the Sony ECM-77B and the Rode M3.

I say the Sony charge £200 for replacement clips. You do get 10 for that price though. So 'just' £20 each for the official ones! You can get near identical knock off versions for 4 quid which have the proper wire loop.

That Sony really is venerable. I'm pretty sure it, or a close predecessor at least, was in use when I visited Tyne Tees Television... in 1989! A true workhorse.

Basic mic technology really hasn't moved on that much. You can add bells and whistles but the capsules and performance were perfected years ago.

@@chinnyvision2Indeed, and it wasn't a criticism. If it's good enough for major broadcasters it's good enough for UA-cam!
To be fair if you can put up with the larger size even the ancient stuff from the 1970s will deliver the goods from an audio fidelity perspective, if it's professional.

@@jasejj Oh I didn't take it as such. Some things were simply perfected 40+ years ago and are still selling today. Also see my studio Beyer DT 150 headphones. A design from the 60's. Bought my pair in 2001! You can go and buy a designer pair of headphones but they won't beat my 150's which are now just about nicely worn in (people joked with me when I first got them that it took years to get them worn in).
