A (Rambling) Tribute To Network DVD

  • It sadly appears to be the case that classic TV and film distributor Network has ceased trading. This is awful news for people like me who have found Network to be their main source of obscure old TV over the last 25 years. What now?
Here's a rambling tribute to their work.

One day,We will get something out there for rarely seen classic TV shows that barely seen on our screens on physical media. And it will be a unexpected surprise to see again.

A damn shame. They put far more legwork and effort than a lot of labels and where else are we going to see something like Tizwas?

This is pretty sad to hear, I have a lot of Network stuff just because it happened to be things I was after and they've always been really good quality.

This is just the start, I think movies, even ones considered blockbusters at the time will become very difficult to watch or own legally as physical media becomes more and more niche.

Streaming ought to be a way of making the obscure stuff available for ever, but unfortunately doesn't, so the programmes end up being left to fade away. I remember how excellent UK Gold was when it first arrived in the early 90s as an analogue satellite channel, where it showed some really interesting stuff that hadn't been seen since it was originally broadcast. Now, it's just back to back episodes of Only Fools and Horses. I remember watching episodes of nearly forgotten stuff like 'Jokers Wild' back in the 90s before going to work in the mornings.... Without Network DVDs, I doubt anyone would ever hear of that stuff again.

Great video on what was such an excellent company.
Don't feel bad for spending £130 on the Crossroads set, I've checked and it's recently sold on ebay from the £300 to £450* areas.
*Only one listing for this price and it had a bonus blu ray included, but still.

Always sad when these sort of companies shut down.
Though thank you for inadvertently introducing me to these shows, as an American I haven't heard of a lot of these, checked out a bit Old Country and am really enjoying it.

I’m surprised they didn’t get a digital broadcast channel licence, the content seems like a mix of like you said (the sadly defunct) Forces TV, That’s TV, Talking Pictures and ITV 4 during the day. Judging by the utter guff That’s TV shows, surely it can’t be that expensive to pick up a digital licence?

Bfi and 2entertain are our only go to now and they were never so deep dipping into rarities , can argue bfi but they seem to be lofty and release stuff ud imagine bbc to be interested in...things like london thru the years , trains and transport etc etc.

  • @Sol-Cutta

Biggest piece of bad news for me in last few years....now we only have 2entertain.

I'm only just hearing this. Love network DVD (or network on air as I think they were officially called). Outstanding company and released a lot of real gems. My hopes for the Clive James and Tarrant on TV (or even Clive's travel) programs getting a release are now zero.

I also would like to highlight their Eurotrash and Python boxed sets. The Eurotrash collection is just superb work, but the Python Norwegian Blu-ray boxed set is a work of art.

Such rubbish news. As a fan of 70s/80s telefantasy my shelves are full of their stuff: Children of the Stones, Sky, Raven, Ace of Wands, Sapphire & Steel, The Owl Service etc etc, and Beasts of course. I'd hope the BFI might pick up some of that lot for example, but as you say a lot of it likely won't be picked up by anyone

The BFI did send a shock to TV collectors a few months back by saying that The Play for Today sets put out by the BFI through the BBC would be the last. The BBC seem to have given up releasing archival TV altogether. Ever since Network went and now the announcement that Simply Media have gone bust, BBC licensed material from the vaults will look far more unlikely. Network lost its creator Tim Beddows earlier this year, but judging by what I've heard, Network was in serious financial trouble. Network struck a deal earlier this year with Hammer. This was a significant deal which would've meant HD masters of The Quatermass films and X The Unknown. Network's deal with ITV Global had finished just before Network went into liquidation, too. All this when they celebrated 25yrs in business. Shocking!

I really liked the extra features Network included, you’d never have that on streaming or itv3, from Crossroads VT clocks, thunderbirds/Stingray break bumpers and Lyon’s Maid adverts, Catweazle writers commentary, also original tv idents reinstated removed by itv or Fremantle.

Did you ever get to finish Hyperdrive? I was lucky enough to find it on DVD from a shop that specialises in selling second hand dvd/blurays quite cheap.

Acorn media , again mainstream tv - to the manor born, the good life, shine on Harvey moon, butterflies, not in the league of network...the closest we have is 2entertain.

I think many people dont understand the amount of lifence freeing up you need to do to release dvds. You need individual licences for music and the video and sometime if there's 50 bits of music thats 50 licences need paying for and clearing and some licences are owned by multis and so one may clear but the other hold back or have been broken up in the years since broadcast...a complicated and time hungry business...hence why theres so few that unless they already own the licences wont go to the bother and expense.

Well the Crossroads set sold out. I know as I had a last minute change of heart and got one of the final box sets. Sold out days later. But the DVD market in general is in decline regardless of the specialist stuff.

Its the last 2 year of black n white shite that killed them off...that what happens when you start releasing your sister company's licence free catalogue.😮 I did comment this repeatedly on their youtube channel..and they replied so they got the message, just not off enough people.
