  • This is the Next Generation panel (Part 1) at the 2016 Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas, NV. It includes Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher), LeVar Burton (Geordi LaForge), and Brent Spiner (Data).
This video was recorded on August 5, 2016.
Please remember, this is a LIVE event. That means that there are going to be people moving around, talking, kids crying, and a lot more interruptions. If you don't like it, you always have the option to pay Creation for their official video, otherwise, here is the free version.

Some people, many people cannot afford to go to star trek conventions. Others due to distance and travel cannot attend.
I submit that you Heather Ferris are making this world a better place. Like Gates McFadden said at the end, you "Help to make things better". You make the viewer's life better with quality content unavailable anywhere else. Thank you

When I was a teenager and watching TNG I had a crush on Beverly. Now I am way in my 40s and Gates McFadden is 67 years old - and damn, I still have a crush on her. She is BEAUTIFUL!

I appreciate that hosting these panels is a tough job..and a pretty thankless task, but he really should've let Gates elaborate on her struggle in trying to direct an episode of TNG. How interesting it is that the Star Trek production team rarely practices what it preaches.

YES I wanted to hear more from her as well. I don't even know which episode it was that she directed. I don't think the host was prepared and he just went back to his own preplaned outline of what to talk about.

Thanks for sharing this! I don't know if they'll come to Australia in the near future but the travel here is long and the jet lag is horrible! I would love to go and visit a star trek con in the US one day. I love the cast and their chemistry is undeniable. I agree with what Gates say; in many industries, women tend to be second fiddle and it sounds silly but we often work harder to be accepted or be given opportunities. I work in finance and it's come a long way but 10 - 15 years ago, it was incredibly bad. Mind you, there is still a pay discrepancy. I admire Gates and Marina for being assertive, vocal and unapologetically candid. And of course I can't help but love Brent as he's very funny and Levar for all the little snippets and comments.

Heather Ferris, thank you so much for uploading these recordings. It would really honestly help if you gave them better titles though. Instead of "The Next Generation - Part 1" why not include "Star Trek The Next Generation Panel at the 2016 Star Trek Convention" or something to that effect. It would net these videos way more views.

Spiner saying that star trek will never end because its part of American culture, but it's world wide, even if not originally when it came out in the sixties when I was 2 years old and didn't get to watch it until re-runs in Australia in my teens, those re-runs (and youtube videos of conventions etc.) of the original and succeeding series/movies keep star trek going for successive generations the world over.

  • @ewestner

I'm glad Gates got to say what she did about women directing. I'm very pissed off on her behalf that it took them seven seasons to let her direct an episode. At least Roxanne Dawson got to direct more eps, but wow, the sexism even in the 80s and 90s makes me really mad. And she got booted off for season 2 because she was trying to get Crusher to be a more powerful character and the producers (or maybe Gene) didn't like that. So glad that fans wrote tons of letters and got her back, because Crusher is by far my favorite character.

24:24 the cast was very close and yet Brent and Levar seem to be very suprised that "women were not allowed to direct"
    Sorry Gates is talking BS.
Many of the writers were girls in TNG for example.
Maybe it has something to do it, because she was fired after the first season.. And why was she fired? Because of false sexual harassment accusations.
Maybe THIS is the reason, star trek executives didn't gave her a chance to direct, immediately when she turned back?
It is just ridiculous to blame star trek not allowing something because she was a woman. Yeah. For sure. Typical feminist bs
Frakes did it all by his self. He went to ALL the different sections of a movie or TV Series production AFTER he had finishing shooting at tng or during breaks. And sometimes he wasn't welcome in some production areas.
But he got his ass up. It seems to me, gates never did that. And because she was lazy, she now blames it on "yeah everybody at star trek was sexist and we were not allowed to..."
Sorry. She lost much of the respect I got for her for that silly answer
