Picard was knocked unconscious by a probe, and in 20 minutes, experienced a full lifetime with a wife, a family, and in the end, the death of his planet. He learned to play the flute in that life. When the probe was opened, THAT SAME flute was there, for him, as a tangible item to prove the experience was real. It was the most moving episode of the entire 8 year run.
I cry every time he opens the flute at the end and plays in his quarters 😭
@@TheNerdyFlutist Thanks for replying. The moment that gets me is when Riker gives Picard the box, and he silently looks up at Riker, and he leaves. Picard opens the box, and picks up the flute, and holds it tight to his heart.
In that flute was his wife Helene, his children, and his friend Betai. Picard lived an entire lifetime in the loving embrace of that probe.
I also need to say that your playing is angelic and very emotional. You have a gift. Wearing a Starfleet uniform is the cherry on top.
Perhaps all of our lives are nothing more than our spirit asleep in a chair, having chosen to live an entire life on this plane in a brief 20-minute span, and when we wake up, we return to who we really are:
Eternal spirit beings who take little sojourns and experience lives.

I love the later episode where Picard shares his music with Daren. Knowing the context behind it you see how meaningful it is to Picard.
I love folk music generally and to me this song represents the tradition and culture of a long lost civilization.

Inner light - forever changed something inside me. Like your version of this beautiful melody!
A more classic rendering than I’ve ever heard of this song. It may have made its way into classic tv but it’s actually an old folk tune about a lullaby that dragons would sing to their young to comfort them. Thank you for that comfort. In today’s world I need it.

I'd like to know more about the old folk tune and the dragon's lullaby. Please offer links, etc. I believe the melody is an original tune by Jay Chattaway.
There was a children's movie many years ago called "Dragonworld" and in it the Dragon's lullabye is played on bagpipe - I'm torn as to which version is better.

You can tell a great song not by it's complexity, but by its simplicity. With just a slow handful of soulful notes, this piece manages to evoke all kinds of emotions and a sense of heartbreaking nostolgia... as if for a love lost, or memories of a time gone by, now gone forever... This piece has been in my head since Inner Light aired. I've always wanted to learn to play it, but never had the space to do it where practicing wouldn't annoy people. All I have is a tin whistle in the key of D, which I can sort of play the basic tune on. I used to play the flute in high school band. Your playing is beautiful.

As onde of the billions of people that believe in reincarnation and that past lives are forgotten to let us focus on the lessons of this one (but still stored in our unconscious mind), I see a beautiful spiritual metaphor in this episode. It is bittersweet that by absorving the memories of a good man and a people deceased a long time ago, Picard could experiment what in this his choices denied him, like being a husband and a father with a stable life. We all had and will have countless chances to do everything. Maybe even be captains of starships. ❤️

Outside of Star Trek, this piece of music is known as "The Skye Boat Song.” It is a late 19th-century Scottish adaptation of a Gaelic song composed around 1782 by Sir Harold Boulton, entitled "Cuachag nan Craobh" ("The Cuckoo in the Grove"). The original song features a composer lamenting to a cuckoo about his unrequited love for Lady Marion Ross. The 19th-century English-language lyrics evoke the tragic journey of Prince Charles Edward Stuart-popularly known as Bonnie Prince Charlie-from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye as he evaded capture by British government soldiers after his Jacobite army was defeated at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.
After the British victory, William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, is widely believed to have mercilessly wiped out the surrendered Jacobites and conducted many brutal reprisals, after which he was often known to his detractors as "the Butcher." Even British sources recorded how a large number of Jacobites, very proud, made no attempt to ask for mercy or deny their involvement and met execution with great courage, some even coming forward to be killed rather than hiding and accepting the situation.
This may be inspired or based on the Skye Boat Song, but I know both songs well enough to know that they're not exactly the same song. Fun fact: the Skye Boat Song was used as the theme song to Outlander! They cover the history you're talking about in the first two seasons.
As far as I know the theme of The Inner Light was composed by Jay Chattaway.
Love that tune.
This has to be the most beautiful song. Its not only the melody, but what it also means when you see the episode. A whole life resumed in a single flute and its melody. I just finished Picard season 3, and seeing all the crew, reunited in this finale made me cry. Cry of nostalgy, cry of growing old and seeing my favorite cast getting older as well. It also brought back memories of my younger self watching those series (Next Generation especially) and having such a pool of emotions from start to finish.
Thank you for recreating this song as it was originally. I tried to find the same complete duo elsewhere but most other musicians always added something else or something more that removed its authenticity.
I watched the episode then with my brother as he jumped up took up his flute and played along… that’s one of my dearest memories with him as he passed away in ‘99… and I haven’t heard his flute ever since…

Absolutely beautiful, and so uniquely distinct. I remember when I was a kid I remember vividly hearing that same melody but I never really knew what it was, I asked my uncle watching Star Trek on the television set and he was telling me about all about the show. I guess as a kid I had other things going on in my mind because I forgot all about it, until recently when I decided to watch the series again. When I heard The Inner Light again, I was snapped back to that time when I was six or seven years old and I had just fell in love with it, and you play it so eloquently, thank you.

I love this beautiful melody! I think the best time that I heard it played on Star Trek was on season six episode 19 STG, when Captain Picard and his science officer who he fell in love with, played it in the best acoustic spot aboard the starship enterprise. It was absolutely beautiful.
