- This is Monty. I was in the yard shoeing another horse when the client asked if i had any spare shoes for Monty, I didn't but found an old pair from one of her other horses. They were the right size but needed to be a completely different shape!

PLEASE READ THE FAQ's BEFORE POSTING!!
1: Hot shoeing ensures a good fit.
2: No, it doesn't hurt the horse if it's shod correctly by a qualified registered person.
3: The horse is calm because it has been trained from birth to know there is nothing to fear.
4: The majority of horses these days are worked either under saddle or in harness and on hard man made surfaces, shoes protect the feet from wearing down too much and can add grip via studs in the shoes for competition animals.
5: Feral horses have particularly hard feet and manage them naturally by foraging, if they get sick they recover or die, it’s nature.
6: The average horse needs re-shoeing every 6-8 weeks
7: The bit I am nailing to has no nerves and is made of Keratin, the same as your finger nails and hair.
8: The burning smells just like burning hair.
9: The piece I fed the dog was a piece of the frog which when fresh is soft and a treat for them. #GaryHuston #Blacksmithing #Farrier #ASMR #Horseshoeing #Fabrication #Ironwork #Hoofcare #welder #repairs #horse #farriery #engineering
He protecc
He attacc
But most importantly,
He give dog horse snacc
for the people wondering, the part he’s giving to the dogs isn’t dirt. it’scalled the frog and it’s made up of multiple things like keratin, cartilage, etc. and has many proteins. it can be quite nutritious for some animals, but istypical covered with dirt and manure so it really depends on the owner wether they give excess peoces to the dogs or nor.
Nosey puppies wanting their treats! Fascinating how quick you work as well.
The dog is all about that frog.
His eating shit
@@4realRecon You sir, are an idiot fore posting a criticizeing coment on a topic you know nothing (game of thrones refrence) about!
Storm READ TYE FREAKING DESCRIPTION.
This part that the dog pops up to see what is going on and when he tries to throw away that part of the frog away the dog eats it. Wow.
*That's some serious gourmet shit right there*
I don’t own a horse, I’ve never been on a horse but I still find this craftsmanship interesting !
Back in the day when we had a horse, farrier day was the dogs favorite day, nothing better than fresh hoof treats.
Pretend farm me: *Starts horse trimming and cuts a bit of the frog off*

All the FAQs in the description,I can attest to;my father and uncle were both farriers, and Dad in particular a very good one.Good work,Gary, you know your craft!
Just found your channel recently. I know nothing about horses but I am fascinated with what you do! Keep up the amazing work! And thank you for the FAQ, the info was definitely new to me! 😁
Sweet gray face pup was not leaving without a tasty treat. You were kind to provide a piece.
Rebecca Eddy that’s disgusting giving that to dogs they step in their own crap all day then you let your dogs eat it and get worms or something
CrimeLand News read the description.
Yeah that really was kind feeding that dog disgusting horse dong disgusting horse.
James Brodbeck read the descriptionnnnnn
I see that ignorant city folk are still in the comments
Has this more or less been done the same way for a long time? Seems that way to this uninformed viewer. Very cool to see the whole process and a treat to watch skilled hands work their craft
Erik S more or less for centuries..
@@garyhuston fascinating. Thanks for sharing
It’s like giving a horse a manicure and pedicure lol and then giving it new shoes to protect its feet from getting dirty and hurt 😂he is also really good at this
That pup of yours sure learned quick! Haha he was in there instantly for the frog
Kelly Kuros not my “ pup”
I’ll send the wife over to get hers done too 🥴🏴🏴👍👍
Not sure a farrier is the right man to do pigs trotters.
Very smart doggos
I wish I didn’t have arthritis so I could be a farrier. I love this stuff!
Does anyone else thinks this is satisfying
So satisfying 👍
Thx
I love to see your work! Greetings from a farrier to be, The Netherlands 😜
When you say a completely different shape I was envisioning square shoes or something :P
All the people freaking out about him feeling the dogs a bit of it, I mean if you can give a dog a cow hoof then why not some of the horse hoof (or frog I guess if we're being technical)
Haley Vidaurri all I can say is dogs are made to digest all sorts of bacteria and gross hints I mean the eat whole animals gross insides and all so I'm not too concerned :)
You can feed a dog shavings of the horse's frog?? Cool. Is it nutritious to the dog or something? Or what's the point of giving the dog pieces of the frog? I'm actually curious! 😃
it's a treat.
@@garyhuston that is so coool! And its free too! 😉
I give hood trimmings to my dog but sometimes they upset her stomach.
Dog: here, let me help...
Why do dogs like to eat the hoof trimmings always confuses me my dog love it as well 😂🥴
@Bella Ball hooves are just giant nails, they're made up of keratin with is actually good for certain animals to eat. Dogs can eat them without causing damage to their organs, humans however can get liver, kidney and heart problems from too much keratin in their diet
1:48 can we talk about the vains in his four arm
talk away!
IKR I was thinking about how painful it would be if he got a paper cut
literally read his description first before you ask about the dog 🤦🏻♀️
Jan Lauj exactly thank u lol
*Só eu que gosto de ver a limpeza de ranilha* ?
I was afraid that dog was going to try to nip a piece of frog while Gary was trimming and get his NOSE trimmed!!
My mom used to bring home hoof trimmings from when the farrier visited for our dog, but instead of just refusing them, she would take them, act like she ate them, and go bury them in the backyard. And then they started to smell...
You just gained a new subscriber!! Great work!
i see its one of those days you keep dropping stuff, we've all been there
does dogs eat horse nail?! I don’t know it!
Yes.
Gary Huston ah-Han. I’m japanese horse rider. I have ever see it job.
That dog is thinking 🤔 GIF ME THAT🤪
Love seeing this done on my horses.
Nice work! Love your videos!
Nice camera work.
did the dog just eat- the- what someone explain
read the description
Gary Huston what is the frog made of
Katherine Klein keratin, the same as the rest of the foot.
Gary Huston oh okay thanks
I hope dog doesnt eat horse after tasting his leg piece...
Delicious! Even with a little Manure on it for seasoning.....love those dogs!
Dogs are weird.
Love your work Gary! Hope you have a great Xmas.
Very interesting!
I see that there are a lot more tools that you use as opposed to the ones needed for cows' hooves. I suppose that using an electric disk to shape the hoof would spook the horse. Is the horse's hoof much harder than a cow's?
Yes, a power tool would spook a horse, I have no idea about the comparison between the two as I have never trimmed a cow!
how long does it take you to do a full set of shoes generally?
About an hour
Dogs will eat any damn thing
Fr
including you
legit haha
jtyshi7 it's a treat for them tho
Gary, been thinking, what is hematite like to forge? i dont have a forge yet but was wondering if it is something you might want to test if you can pick some up, possible uses would be knife/sword handle.
i have necklaces and bracelets made of the stuff and they do look and feel great.
I don’t know what that is, I’ll have to google it!
I don’t think you could forge it, it’s an ore!
dog eats it?
You must struggle with your back mine hurts after picking there feet out
Mine hurts just watching these videos.
Is the horse shoe clippings good for the doggies?
millie Roberts Read the description
Dragonett thank you i didnt even notice
What is that coming off the horse's foot and why are you feeding it to the dogs is it edible
Kajwo Jones its old dead part of the hoof that needs to be trimmed off. The part fed to the dog was a peice of the “frog” some dogs like to chew or eat it. It is fine for them.
Read desc. It will give you answers
Watch the dogs eat
Also is it ok if I accidentally scratched a horses hoof when i was picking it out?? Is it bad? Does it hurt them?
Jayleigh Vaughn it’s fine as long as you don’t go stabbing down the side of the frog.
One question: does it differ how short you cut the hooves if the horse gets horseshoes or not?
Yes, you cut them shorter if you are fitting shoes.
@@garyhuston Okay :) thank you for the answer!
What is the average cost for shoeing a horse? That looks like back breaking work!
£75
@@garyhuston only 75??
How often do you have to replace your file?
once a week or so depending on how busy i am.
I read the faqs but not sure if you answered this in another video but do you have back problems from always bending like this?
No I don’t
I have a couple of questions about the nails. Are they made of a copper alloy? And if they are, is it because copper is soft enough to bend and cut easily?
No, just copper coated.
@@garyhuston Oh. Thank you!
What is the purpose of the horseshoe? What’s the difference with not having it?
OG213LA idk I’ve always wondered
Shoes for horses are just like shoes for people; they protect the foot from wear and tear and add extra crip to the ground
Okay now I got an honest question that isnt in the FAQ (silly me) have you ever accidentally hammered your own finger or hand while nailing the hooves in? Because that must have been hell XD
often
@@garyhuston *Oof*
Don’t worry about it, it’s a millisecond of pain then carry on as normal!
0:52 why?
don't you give treats to your pets?
Gary Huston so it’s okay for them to eat it? Does it hold some form of nutrition for the dogs?
Its a treat
It is the dried up part of a vascular formation I think.
Also can I ask why you were repositioning that nail around 15:30?
Kelly Kuros because it didn’t go in the right place
Hey that old dog looks very familiar to me
Why?
@@garyhuston looks like a dog that i grew up with his name is "scrappy"
Amazing 🇦🇱
今回はワンちゃん達に囲まれて大変そうでしたね笑
馬の爪はおいしいのかな
i adore your work and videos but jesus my back hurts just watching you work in that squatting position..
I have a question i know nothing about this but I’m just curious. Is there a specific way the nail should be faced, like does one side have grooves?
Caitlin Hinton there should be a stamp on the head of the nail pointing inward towards the frog if I’m correct
you are correct
Sos un capo asiendo eso la verdad que me degaste con la boca abierta
Porfin alguien en español 👏👏👏👏
Is the frog of the foot flesh or bone?
Neither, the bit I cut is soft horn
@@garyhuston ohhh ok, I literally know nothing about horses ha I have no idea why I find this fascinating
@@garyhuston Also when you put the new shoe on, why do you burn the hoof? Is it so the hoof fits better?,
They do that so they can make sure everything fits nice and smooth. It also doesn’t hurt the horse, just think of the hoof as a big finger nail.
@@k-popismylife6659 ahhh I see this is so fascinating!
Eeeeeew why do the dogs want to eat that?!
Hang on I'll ask her,...............she said because it tastes great.
@@larrybrown6068 it does?
@@frunka_ My dog thinks so.
Doesn't the dog die from that horse's nail?
Of course not, it’s a treat!
@@garyhuston brah that made me nearly sick mane
Yes, of course. This farrier is going around poisoning his customers dogs on purpose 🙄
I like a lot your vids, whach them from years. Now I must to ask some. Why do you clean so superficial the soul and the frog? In this case maybe is a bit platfoot ishue it be a reason. But i see that in other videos more often lately.
Thanks for sharing.
Sorry, I don’t know what you mean.
I'ts obvious in all of his videos that he never trims any more (frog, sole or wall) than is necessary! Fore you to call this superficial cleaning, calls into
question you're knowlege about farriary! (sorry fore my bad english)
Couldn't go faster.
Richard Savon what’s your hurry?
Why do the dog ate the drt
it's not dirt, it's part of the frog which is a treat!
Dogs love the pieces of frog
....my mom's dogs used to eat the clippings of the hoof as well. It is good for the dogs.
Where did you attend school?
Kelly Kuros which school, I have attended many

Why did you feed it to the dogs
Don’t you feed your dog treats?
Ohhhhhhhh
Almost had a little dog pancake. I had one step on a dog once. Yikes! I work on a bunch that hate dogs.
Yes, I’m always worried about that.
You’re moving good Gary. I’m only a little over half of the years of service you have but by Thursday and Friday I feel like 40 years of shoeing. I finally had to hire a 22 year old to pull and clinch for me. It just lets me get 2 or 3 more horses done in a day.
Shadeskast I’m only moving well because I do very little now😂🤣
Pode dar pro cachorro comer?
•PRODIGIO FF• pode ué ele deu
That is nasty why did u feed ur dogs that 🙈🐮
It's really good for them
Not really. Frog trimmings are good for them, its not uncommon to see hoof caps from cattle as dog treats as well. Nutritious and less wasteful
