For those who are concerned, this process is the horse equivalent trimming nails. So don't worry, the horse is not in pain!
:
It's like if someone put a paperclip wire through the grown-out white part of your nails.
:/
It sucks this has to be said in EVERY video lol I feel like it should be obvious that it doesn't hurt the horse. It's not reacting at all
i know,it just looks painful af
Listening to the way he was breathing when he started putting on the horse shoes all I can think was: this man deserves some hot cocoa with all the marshmallows .
marshmellows AND some whipped cream on top
I always offer my farrier as much of hot and cold drinks as he wants. 😊 This job is so freaking hard. I even die when I just rasp two hooves 😂
What a caring man to do his best on the job. The reason the horses are so calm is because they know that they can trust this man with their lives. This must feel so good to the animal! Like me getting a mani-pedi.
Man, this horse got a mani/pedi and custom made shoes with a shine. It's living life better than me! XD
No dude, I love to wear custom made shoes but getting nails pierce through the toe nail like that? I will pass.....
@@MrZen25041989 the horse can't feel anything in his "nails"
He got them Gucci flip flops 😂
@@guicorleonex7947 On human perception, if your shoes pierce through your nails even though you dont feel it...but you see it.Would you still wear your shoes...?!

The satisfying one?
"Oh, but doesn't that hurt the horse? You're torturing that poor animal for aesthetics! You need to stop!"
Well, Sharon, if it hurt the horse, I'm pretty sure the horse would make that clear with a swift kick! And I'd like to see you walk around in shoes without cutting your toenails for several months, might get a bit uncomfortable, right? Piss off 😂
lmao
I knew its not bad for them but i wondered why they let it happen and dont kick anyway
@@Apolloneek yeah i mean those legs dont feel that comfy in that position now do they.
No one assumed that but ok lol
Nick Levine they’ve probably dealt with horses that try to kick but they know how to handle it. also the horses are trained and most likely had it done before. so.
I'm actually surprised that the ends of the nails for the shoes protrude from the hoof. I always thought that they stayed inside and were nailed straight in, but I guess it makes sense considering the length of the nails.
Fun game: hide some of those hoof slices in a bag of sliced coconut And leave them unnatended
Lol i thought i was weird cause it reminded me if coconut 😅😅

Wait so this doesn’t hurt the horse because it’s like a big toe nail for them right ?
Yeah, the only part of their hoof that they can feel the frog if you go to deep tho, the frog is that triangle thing on the bottom of the hoof
@@hotshot_rae That's actually wrong. The frog is not sensitive. If it is, the horse's foot either has arthritis or is probably infected.
@@feathersong5838 My riding instructor, who has been around horses for 30 year, said they could feel their frogs :/
@@hotshot_rae In the same way you can feel impacts on your nails when you drum your fingers. Force transfers through the frog, but it isn't skin.
@@MediocreHexPeddler I never said it is skin :/ the frog is the tender part of the hoof where it helps pump bloody back up to the rest of the body. The hoof is well callused and that is why people think it cannot feel anything, which is incorrect. It is just protected. I have talked to other equestrians to fact check and they all agree so 🤷🏼♀️

Okay. Fair enough. I was getting ready to get up on my high horse about using aluminum shoes for something other than racing, and you explained what was going on and why right in the first couple of minutes.
So, mea culpa. I'll keep quiet and finish watching. 👍
One thing I've noticed, but never got around to asking - my dad, while he was still alive, almost never used the front nail holes. He nearly always left those two holes open. Yet pretty much everyone I've watched here DO use the front nail holes. Can you explain to me why the difference? Also, he trimmed the toe much more aggressively than I've seen anyone in this format do. Again, can you tell me why?
I will add that he never had a horse go lame after shoeing, and he was quite good at dealing with problem hooves. He even shod a horse with a full (complete hoof) quarter crack in such a way that the horse exhibited zero lameness while shod by him and was an excellent working horse. It just needed the special shoe that my dad made for it.
Oddly satisfying

i realized that we get to see how this works with this camera angle but doesn’t he have to do this looking upside down, while trying to keep the horse foot steady while hunched over?
So I know nothing about horses, I just find it interesting how the horse is so chilled throughout this process. Are horses trained to stand still like this or is it just something they get used to from a young age?
A bit of both. First they're trained to know that nothing bad will happen and to train up their strength and balance, then since it happens about every 6-8 weeks (depending on the horse) for their entire lives they learn to just relax and wait.

Is modification of the shoe always necessary? Or are there occasions where you can shoe the horse with "stock" unmodified shoes?
You didn’t put the an oil or stain on his shoe, was wondering why? I’ve seen others put some varnish on the shoe is it just for esthetic or does it do something else it?
