@@AxeMain Dickerson is by no disrespect a fucking joke. He won simply bc he wasnt boicoting the IFBB back in 80 and 81, there was literally 0 chance of him beating lets just say a Zane, a Padilla, Tom Platz or even a very mature Samir Bannout who later took the title unanimously. Dickerson is by far the biggest bullshit that the IFBB ever made!

He talks about the time he first heard about this unknown unbelievable big and conditioned guy (Yates) and then when he finally saw Dorian in the flesh and he couldn't believe what he was seeing and what he had to do to beat him, 'cause at the time, Lee knew he had the advantage because of the norms when it came to judging.

Haney won this contest clearly. The only journalist who disputed his win was Peter McGough, a completely biased “journalist” who was a personal friend of Yates and a fellow Brit. When he scored the front double biceps comparison “a draw” that showed how pro Dorian he was..Haney clearly won that pose. I remember reading in one of the bodybuilding magazines at the time that several of the judges were hanging out with Yates prior to the show, and this may explain how he somehow won the muscularity round, because Haney DEFINITELY won the majority of the poses. I’m glad that he retired after this contest and went out on top because I think they (the judges) would’ve robbed him at the ‘92 show in Helsinki, Finland.

Once again a great and very well balanced analysis. Regarding the debate of whether Haney could beat Yates in ‘92 and onwards, I think he definitely could. First he had age by his side and he also had those crazy genetics to his advantage. All he needed to do was to push the envelope in terms of size by consuming all that extra juice and he could have still been a force to reckon with post ‘91. I think he wasn’t scared, he was just smart enough to quit at a high point in his career and because he had already achieved everything every pro can only dream for.

  • @ivang3574

We can't blame Haney for retiring after 1991. He got the record and was probably tired of competing all those years. He wasn't hungry for more and retired at the top of his game and in good health. If Yates didn't skip the 1990 Olympia we could've seen another battle between them but he did so it wasn't Haney's fault they only competed once against each other.

I think maybe more than 1 year actually. Dorian played the mass game and it served him well but Lee really had it all. That being said, my friends and I used to follow the Mr. Olympia year after year in the 80's and early 90's. Since about 2002 I can barely stomach watching it at all now. It used to be awe inspiring seeing these men on stage, now it's honestly just horrifying what they've done to themselves. The mass monsters era has stripped the Mr. Olympia of it's former glory in my opinion. The last guy I really found to have the Mr. Olympia physique was Flex and he never even won one.

Not gonna say that Taylor was robbed based on these two pictures which also showed him, but he won both shots imo. At least my eyes were immediately drawn to him. I feel he was a bit underappreciated throughout his career despite the fact that he had all the right muscles, good proportions, balance, 3D and some electric stage presence. But then again competition was tough. But still.
Anyway, all my thoughts have already been written down by my fellow viewers, so there's not much more to say here. In a nutshell: it was really close, Haney still won fair and square, he is the most underrated ever, Vince is also underrated, Dorian is a legend, I agree with your review. :)

I think Haney got out at the right time. He saw where bodybuilding was going and he didn’t want any part of it. Dorian pushed the envelope with the drugs because he had to make up for average genetics (by bodybuilding standards). This is 91 and this version of Dorian would have lost to 93 flex. Dorian pushed the envelope and the mass monster era began. Haney with his superior genetics and GH, insulin, etc. probably would have won a few more sandow trophies.

Just a note. I used to read all the BBing magazines back in the days of Haneys reign. The theory of that time was to covet a V frame. This is why you would see poses with the legs together rather than splayed apart. Look at Lees back double bi, and you see what I mean. Talk of the X frame was only just starting. Yes you still needed decent legs, but no one did the squat down back poses we see today. Rich Gaspari was the first to have shredded glutes but that was a novelty, not mandatory like today.

Per what Lee said and others close to him have said, once he broke Arnold's record...he felt like he accomplished all there was to accomplish. Lee had been competing since he was a teenager and was getting burned out so his final win was the ideal way to go out

    Great review Tom.
Personally i think Yates won both lat spreads, besides the abs thigh and side triceps. The judges had him narrowly beating Haney on the muscularity round also.
Important to note that Haney didnt have a perfect score in the Symmetry round either, most likely Yates won the rear relaxed due to his better upper lower balance and much better calves.
Yates had a rather low score on the Symmetry round in 92 also, just barely edging out Levrone...which would suggest the judges thought he had better symmetry the larger he got, which is unusual since most pros are better in that regard at a lighter body weight.
For the record the posing round, i know you talked about it in the past also, it is scored( at least according to the ifbb criteria) 50 % phisique and 50 % performance-yes thats how the define it.That is why guys like Ronnie, Jay or Dorian did so well in this round as well.
The posedown was also scored separately then, and according to the ifbb they only actually score the quarter turns and mandatories, the "free posing" entertainment part is NOT scored at all, many including myself have thought that it was actually the other way around.
In this manner whoever wins the most of poses in symmetry and muscularity rounds will also take the posedown..its basically a repeat in one final throw of the dice .

@@xaviervega468 his quarter turns id say were better in 95, he had wider back in the front and rear relaxed and was thciker from the side.Biceps being torn doesnt affect him as the arms are extended in these semi-relaxed poses, so the biceps is lengthened not flexed. If anything the triceps will matter in the symmetry round alot more than biceps

When Lee Haney is taking at the beginning of the 1991 VHS video, just talking without any posing/tensing he looked easily better than the rest!
    No contest in fact.
Ron Love, Shawn Ray , Mike Matrazzo,Rich Gaspari ,Lee Labrada as well as Dorian are also interviewed.
They all say a few words.
Dorian in comparison (being interviewed) actually looks quite small.
Lee Haney just looked every inch the winner.
Looking at that footage, even people not into bodybuilding would have to say that Haney was easily the best.

Lee Haney definitely won this he was bigger and more aesthetic than Dorian. Plus Haneys Chest and Back were just bigger and more mature. Plus to beat a reigning Mr Olympia you have to do it convincingly to overthrow them.
If Lee Haney came back for 92 I have no doubt he would’ve won again so 92 to Haney.
It’s not until 93 Dorian would be able beat Lee Haney in a convincing enough manner to overthrow the reigning champ so 93 would go to Dorian.
If you go further to 94 you start getting into Dorians torn bicep and everyone else upped their game this year to catch Dorian and had Lee Haney still been around he also would’ve upped his game. Haney in that state would beat torn bicep Dorian. So 94 to Haney.
