Den Kongelige Afstøbningssamling (The Royal Casting Collection) is a museum in Copenhagen, Denmark... that you're not allowed to see. Its doors were officially closed in 2016, after already many years of struggles (by 2016, the museum's opening hours were down to just 2 half days a week).
The museum houses approximately 2,500 plaster casts ("gips" in Danish) of world famous sculptures from all over the world, in a collection spanning thousands of years and countries. Originally opened by Carlsberg beer founder, Carl Jacobsen, who used his fortune to purchase the thousands of moulds at the end of the 19th Century, even at the time of opening the museum was troubled. This style of art - sculptures from antiquity - were no longer in fashion once the museum opened in 1895 and Copenhageners weren't that interested.
However, the museum plodded along and in the 1990s, it was moved to its current location in an old, traditional Danish "pakhus" (warehouse) from the 17th Century along Toldbodgade. All along the waterfront here are these old warehouses that were used in West Indian trade, processing tonnes of goods from the Danish West Indian plantations (e.g. a lot of sugar and tobacco).
In 2016, after already numerous budget cuts and employee layoffs, the museum finally closed. Opening VERY rarely - like once or twice a year, if that - for special events, the collection otherwise sadly sits behind closed doors.

I HIGHLY recommend this article with the museum's long-time curator, Henrik Holm. It's one of the best written articles I've read in a long time; it details the museum's plight, as well as some very thoughtful opinions about the building's dark past as a base for Danish colonial trade and the thousands who were negatively affected by that past. No one knows the museum better than Henrik, so it's certainly worth a read if you'd like to learn more.

This is the email for Statens Museum for Kunst (the National Art Museum here in Denmark). They are the ones responsible for the museum, so please email them and let them know you'd like for the museum to open again! Maybe if they see how much money they could earn in ticket sales from lots of eager art-lovers, they might reconsider.

You’ve done it again, Erin. Made me aware of something I was blissfully ignorant about … I had no idea about that collection. And I think it would be a cultural crime to let this fade into oblivion.
I’m joining the activists now. ❤️

I've been wanting to go ever since I found out about the museum 5 years ago. Fingers crossed, there'll be a chance for Kulturnat 2022.
