I did a similar experiment with the smaller 1 lb. Propane tank like you would use for a camp stove. Also very thick steel. The round that surprised me was the Aguila Sniper Subsonic. That round punctured the tank in one shot every time. Slightly lower velocity, but 60 grains of lead.
A couple things really quick, first the valve has a back check installed so unless he opens the bleeder the valve won't let gas out. Second propane is heavier than air so unless it's upside down the gas might stay in the tank. Last love the videos, just be safe.
It must take years of practice to hit that dead on over and over again. I really enjoy what you do plinkster thanks for doing it and keep on plinking for us!
Of what? I wouldn't even shoot pistol at 20' let alone rifle. Minimum distance for pistol target (or bullseye as simple people call it) shooting is 25m
Just because the valve is open does not mean it is empty. There is a spring loaded ball or diaphragm the keeps it from bleeding off gas without a regulator attached or screwed to it.
+charleskro1 not in the older ones. If a tank is more than seven or eight years old, there is no OPD (overfill protection device) unless the entire valve was replaced.
Hitting it at an angle effectively increases the thickness of the steel. I don't know how much it would really effect it, or if it would be easily measurable but it would make a differance
wow mate - your homestead is looking really green for this time of year! That berm looks like it's had a good working in over the last couple of seasons!
i think mythbusters busted this. Im pretty sure they said it wouldnt explode if you shoot a propaine tank, it was an episode when they collabed with red jacket firearms i beleive
way too many years ago, I actually got the first shot to punch right in (it was remington yellow jackets in a marlin 60). Maybe it was a cheaply made tank. The cool part is after my dad saw me hole it on the first shot from maybe 25 yds at most, he wanted to test it on an old console model television - the standard CRT type TV. It took 4 shots before the thing imploded because of the vacuum inside the CRT. The implosion was pretty spectacular.
The Velocitor was more towards the side which is probably why it didn't seem to have as much damage. If it were hit just under the Stinger, it may have looked different.
Good video... and entertaining. I am puzzelled. How is it that the fourth shot went through the front and the backside whereas the first three shots did not penetrate the front side?
Shot a tank like that with a .17 Win. Super Mag and it looks like I was using a high-speed drill. Range was 15 yards. . 38 Super and .45 ACP just made big dents. It is all about velocity.
I was banging away at an empty LP tank too one time with a .45 using standard 230 grain jacketed ammo and never got a penetration either. I have to admit though that I never hit the same spot twice. I'm not that good.
If you cut the tank in half you'll see that where the velociraptor hit is double thickness . When the tanks are made they are overlapped about an inch . You should try that again .
Chuck, I am not even sure I could get 4 in the same spot with 40 rounds at 4 feet. I thought that was pretty good shooting too. I know there are a few people who can do it but I have to admit I am not one of them.
I tried this very same deal at 30 yards with a 17 hmr and it went right on through each and every time. Neat little holes where each bullet struck. Tried the same with a 9 MM and the bullets just bounced off with just a deep dent left .
That's what i'm wondering. Hitting it on an angle like that effectively increases the thickness of the tank and diminishes the energy transmission of the bullet.
That sounds just like when I shoot my 20 lbs portable steel 10 inch wide by foot tall plate target from about 25 yards distance away with my Hatsan 135 QE vortex .25 caliber air rifle using open sights and shooting H&N 30.86 grain baracuda pellets. They don’t come anywhere near piercing through it but with the 27 foot pounds of energy they have at the muzzle and the 22 foot pounds of energy them heavy pellets still have 25 yards down range it makes a very loud ring and leaves a big mark
+the Cloaker.... Back in the 80's synthesized keyboard music was rampant, prevalent in the porn industry videos because of copyright issues to good music - same problem Plinkster deals with here - uncannily ironic Plinkster chooses the same solution to have some type of music in his vids... you probably dont give a shit but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times you can watch all the latest movies on InstaFlixxer. Have been binge watching with my gf during the lockdown :)
On another channel a guy actually fired a Crossman .22 cal flat head pellet through a rifle using a nail gun .22 blank. It punched through sheet steel plate that a standard LR or even Stinger would not penetrate. He did not chrono the round but I am guessing it was probably upwards of 2000 fps.
I would be willing to bet a .22 mag will easily do it. Not just because of extra velocity but also because of tougher bullets. Especially, the solid points and the ballistic tips.
A full propane tank would be a waste of gas as it would not explode, not even incendiary rounds would light it, it's been tested. Stop watching movies and pay attention to the real world
Something Im not sure if its accounted for. But the more you angle the shot on the propane tank the more material its going to have to puncture to replicate the same amount of damage. Think of it like how they angle armor in order to get more protection out of a thinner piece saving weight. The only true way to measure the amount of penetration is to hit it dead flat or atleast make sure its the exact same amount of angling as the previous shot
+Exploatores we had ours at 50 yards. but it was a little 2 lb tank not a 20 lb tank. I have shot the bugger ones before with a flare on the top it did not explode but 75 yards is a must and you might chain it down.
It was nice meeting you today. You told me to watch the movie Shooter, I looked it up, unfortunately I won't be able to watch it any time soon because we only have Netflix and it isn't on there. I'll wait for it to come on one of the local channels, but I'm not sure how long that will take.
Before shooting starts, I thought what if you had steel plate or plexiglass sheet as shield,, put barrel through hole in shield, and shot at shortest workable distance for max effect, say 2-3 in.?
Have you ever thought of going in the opposite direction with your ammo? I would love to see you use some Aguilar 22 SSS (sub sonic snipers) for some of your videos. I don't know if your familiar with them. They consist of a 22 short case topped by a 60gr. (yep 60 gr.) bullet. They are hare hitting although none too accurate in a hand gun. I use them all the time to dispatch varmints such as opossums and it never takes more than one shot to the head. They might go through things like propane tanks or fire extinguishers easier because of the sheer mass of the bullet. Just a thought.

Be safe and keep plinking. Your lucky brother. I along with my father went to an indoor range with a 22 single six. He shot and hit the paper target but it also hit a divot on the deflector plate. It came directly back and hit me square in the chest. I was standing beside him as he fired. Those deflector plates are angled so the round is deflected upwards into a bullet catch but that divot caused the round to come straight back. Be careful firing at objects where you make a divot and then shoot that same spot again.
So the bigger tanks must be thicker steel. I've shot the smaller green cans and using cheap bulk ammo get penitration on the first shot, same with the little blue/yellow/red torch cans I can get a complete pass threw with cheap bulk ammo. But interesting to see it wouldn't go through the fat cans. Good video thanks
This video isn't about black powder rifles but it takes 2 .50 cal loaded with 100 grain (because I had an older rifle which was only able to safely handle max 120 grain)
Shooting the right side ofthe tank means your not hitting the metal straight on so it appears thicker there to the bullet. Could be as much as twice as thick. Try hitting it center on. Tha's where the bullet will strike the thinnes material.
I don't know if the composition of the bullets is such that a spark would be created, which is what would need to happen to ignite any remaining propane. However, when I was a kid, a man I knew drained a propane tank, then flushed it with water before welding on it. The largest part of him they found was a foot that was still encased in a boot. Small fissures and other voids within the metal can still hold enough propane to create a tremendous explosion. Be careful.
I would like to see a head to head penetration test between a 10-22 a marlin 70 and a marlin 25 with the same ammo. I have seen in several different situations that between these 3 different weapons there is a substantial difference
When I was a kid, I found an old Cooler, the kind they keep ice cream in in the grocery stores. I had a .22 survival rifle and shot up the compressor tank, I could not get any of the rounds to penetrate.
You would thlink he would have added air into the tank. Have you ever done volocity of 22 out of a revolver compared to semi auto compared to lever action rifle compared to semi rifle?
I like the sound the round makes when it hits. Instead of buying steel targets, I'll just pick up a few of these at the dump for free and set them up in the woods!!
I would love to try the propane tank with a 22 wmr. I do not think a 30 gr vmax will stay together. CCI 30gr lead HP should get it done, first shot. One would think a 40gr bullet would be the tank killer. But 30 gr bullets do more damage to mild steel at close range (under 40 yards).
A straight on shot with a standard velocity .22 round will go thru one side of the propane tank, but it won't exit the other side. I know because I have done it. Rick H.
I haven't looked through all your videos, but have you tried thus with a full tank? Or a tank that had some compression in it? I've shot a tank that was about half full once that belonged to a friend (it was about 100 yards away and he didn't think I could hit it) bit smaller and blue. But that thing took off, it was pretty thick also.
I know a couple of guys that shot a bowling ball with 5.56. They heard something howling next to them. They decided it was ricocheting back toward them. That ended the bowling ball game. LOL
not sure on your tank specs but i live in Canada and just did this with a stg rep 22 and punched through no prob ,,,mabe the tanks are of different thickness of metal i dont know
And nobody mention your amazing aming. Hitting the same spot 4 times from that distance is very tricky. Well done!

STANGERS!!!!!! gotta love them CCI bullets.
Lol!!!
Been looking. Can't find Stangers anywhere!! All they have are these Stingers. Are they any good? Worth trying?
@@gellotion I love the stingers (Stangers lol) definitely great ammo. Try them out for sure
@@gellotion stingers/stangers are the same ammo.

I really like the sound of that lever action - seems smooth
Always interesting seeing what bullet proof really is and just how powerful the "littlest" of calibers really is...
22plinkster, the only gun channel where the bullets actually land where they're supposed to
Just because the valve is open does not mean it is empty. There is a spring loaded ball or diaphragm the keeps it from bleeding off gas without a regulator attached or screwed to it.
Correct!
Is that why a blew up
+charleskro1 not in the older ones. If a tank is more than seven or eight years old, there is no OPD (overfill protection device) unless the entire valve was replaced.
Joe Smith
Correct. The tank in question is OPD equipped. This is indicated by the triangular shaped valve handle.
Well it's empty now ;)
Very entertaining video as usual. Keep on keeping on.
With all my respect, I would prefer the vid without music! :)
Nice shooting. Like the Robin Hood (IE splitting an arrow with YOUR arrow) of plinking. Those tanks are tough.
That Evil Roy rifle is lovely bro!!! I have one on layaway at my local gun shop because of this channel. ;-)
Same spot, fantastic shooting, a joy to watch.
Hitting it at an angle effectively increases the thickness of the steel. I don't know how much it would really effect it, or if it would be easily measurable but it would make a differance
Penetration power - thickness with angle variable measured in.

The rounds are more easily deflected from a convex surface than a concave one.

It takes the 22plinkster 4 shots to get through a propane tank but a human being would need about 40 to get 4 to land in the same spot
Chuck, I am not even sure I could get 4 in the same spot with 40 rounds at 4 feet. I thought that was pretty good shooting too. I know there are a few people who can do it but I have to admit I am not one of them.
However you wouldn't need to get 4 to hit the same spot for a human. One shot with a .22 lr to the head or any vital area is fatal.
Every Time 22Plinster calls the CCI "Stang-ears" it makes me smile.
I tried with my 22 and went through the first time
I'd like to see you try this same test with the Aguila 40gr copper plated solid nose interceptors.
Full tank and .22 Magnum next time : )
I tried this very same deal at 30 yards with a 17 hmr and it went right on through each and every time. Neat little holes where each bullet struck. Tried the same with a 9 MM and the bullets just bounced off with just a deep dent left .
Those little 17hmr joints go incredibly fast
it would penetrate when its a direct Hit. No angle to it
That's what i'm wondering. Hitting it on an angle like that effectively increases the thickness of the tank and diminishes the energy transmission of the bullet.
+TShirtCannon yes I shot one today 1022 cci mini Mag 36 HP
Risk of recoil, no?
Yes, ive shot these many times with my friends .22 and they punch threw pretty easy and slap the back side pretty hard

Well, I was pretty sure the first would not go through, but I am surprised the second did not. Those tanks are pretty tough.
Even though a propane is empty, it can still be explosive, propane has been known to seep into the metal of the propane tank, so remain careful.

Tracers can set them off, don't know if it would with a .22 though.
Black Baron have you tried it yourself???
Caleb Cavender Nah but I was with a friend who did, it wasn't a large one like this though but the container was still thick.
Caleb Cavender First shot flaming gas just kind of shot out of the hole it left, then it blew up after he shot it a few more times.
Black Baron hmm, what type of round? Was it APIT or just a regular tracer?
Something Im not sure if its accounted for. But the more you angle the shot on the propane tank the more material its going to have to puncture to replicate the same amount of damage. Think of it like how they angle armor in order to get more protection out of a thinner piece saving weight. why not tracers and a full tank. way more fun just saying
+Connor Hunter Not with .22 lr. A 7,62 nato with a good scope and the tank a kick away. then it might be somthing fun to do.
+Exploatores no if you shoot one at a time I could see that but that bump fire m&p he has or an auto loader will set it off. it's lots of fun

I believe Henry has another 22 out its the little brother of the golden boy it looks like yours but it was labeled the silver boy at my local shop
Considering how much the last round dented the back of the tank, it might only take two if you are shooting head on.
fun vid. .22's are a blast and very accurate.

Hey i would appreciate if you would Do a full one even if it was smaller. I think it would explode but not in flame
Try using a 40gr Aguila Interceptors. I think the CCI 36gr hollow point Stangers deform and lose quite a bit of energy when they strike the tank.
Thanks for the video, I always wondered about that.
I would like to see a head to head penetration test between a 10-22 a marlin 70 and a marlin 25 with the same ammo.

Sure glad you held up four fingers so I could get some kind of idea how many four was.
A straight on shot with a standard velocity .22 round will go thru one side of the propane tank, but it won't exit the other side. I know because I have done it.
