I have recently learned to deal with punky wood by using clear resin thinned with acetone. It works very well and does not change the color of the wood. From my research and limited experience you can thin the epoxy upto about 10% of the resin and still get good results. You just paint it on with a brush. Oh nice bowl too. I love burls.
@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks I have used Total Boat table top epoxy. Works well for me. I have also seen other people use slower setting resin but I don't have experience with that. I have only ever painted it on (no pressure pot or vacuum chamber). I have been wondering if it would do better if I used one of these methods. Honestly though I have not seen the need yet.
I have found that applying mineral oil to punky woods, and letting it sit overnight, gives me a very smooth cut. Works much better than applying sanding sealer. Great looking bowl.👍
Have you ever tried pentacryl or minwax wood hardener? I used to use them on large carvings and I’ve wondered if they’d work on turnings. I don’t imagine they’re food safe but maybe after they’re dry 🤔
@@DancingFox6 I haven’t tried a wood hardener, but I’ve used epoxy cut with acetone. It worked ok. I saw a video, I think the guy was from Canada, where he used mineral oil on punky wood. I gave it a try on a blank that was so punky that it was about to go in the fire pit. The wood cut like butter and was super smooth.
1. I am so glad you have cored this burl! It saves an awful lot of work hollowing out tough material, and yields at least one more bowl. How cool is that? 2. This would have to be the darkest burl wood I have seen. 3. I hope we get to see the smaller bowls..Please?
Stephanie, thanks for watching! It was pretty dark in places! I think my plan for the smaller bowl is to possibly do a hybrid bowl with it. I'd hope the resin could stiffen up the punky area. It will definitely be a future video.
Lovely. My question is, how are you going to hold the inner bowl blanks to core them? I’m sure you’ve got an idea. This mother bowl is great. Thanks for sharing.
Well, with it being so punky I'm thinking I might make a hybrid bowl with it since it also has some voids. If that's the case I'll just put a waste block in the resin.
Kind of waste .. sorry but more effort on polish.. to bring even more color and definition. Slow down and work the pure beauty out of the wood.. Over all good effort but still the finish is the key.. Burls are rare.. they have no grain and when you get one do the triple time on them to get out their beauty..
What a wild pattern on the bowl. Beautiful
Thanks Judith!
Gorgeous burl bowl...I love turning burls and I have 5 giant Cherry burls that were given to me in my garage.
Great bow, and turn, thanks for sharing.
Beautiful bowl Robert.
Thanks so much Jack! Glad you think so!
Great looking bowl Robert. Great save with all that punky wood.
That looks the business Robert 👏👏👏👏

Hmm, I might have to try that on the smaller piece I cored from this piece. Which resin have you done this with?

Stunning 👍🏴
Thanks Matt!
Nice looking!👍🏻
Thanks James!
Great job, thanks for the tips on dealing with punky wood 👍👍👍
No problem Anthony! Thanks for watching!
That’s a nice hunk of wood there, Harry Beaver! 😮😉😂
That beaver says he can handle even bigger! Not sure if I believe him or not!
@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks Well if that Beaver tries an even bigger hunk of wood, I want to see it! Make sure you video it and put it on the net…! Lol!
Lovely burl bowl! I know it was a challenge, but you did very well with it!
Thanks Julee, it was a pain dealing with the soft spots of wood but I'm pretty pleased with it!
I'd call that a success, nice work fellas.
That came out really nice, Robert!

Looks good.
Glad you think so Brad!
Wow 🤩 what a great piece fantastic work nicely done thanks for the video 👍👍
Thanks so much David! Hope you're doing well!
That's awesome, Hodge!!! Good save!
Hats off to you, Robert. Given how punky that wood was, I think I'd have chickened out and not risked the bowl saver
That is a beautiful piece of timber Hodge and you did it justice, well done mate
Stunning piece of wood love it
Good job - looks great! 👍
Thanks alot Paully!
Great looking bowl Robert. Really well turned, thoroughly enjoyed the video. Thanks or sharing.
Beautiful bowl!!!
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thanks! I'm glad you like it!
@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks You're welcome!!
Wow, how punky does Harry like his wood?? Great work and an awesome result. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the smaller piece.
From the wardrobe changes this must have taken at least 3 days. Excellence takes time and patience, great bowl.
Beautiful piece Rob and looked challenging you deserve to be proud of it and for heavens sake don't let Harry nibble on your wood 😀
Thanks Steve! I try to tell him to keep my wood out of his mouth!

Absolutely beautiful Hodge!
Despite the punkiness you were able to save a gorgeous bowl! Well done!
A lot of work but man did it turn out beautiful.
Thanks Jean! I'm glad you like it!
Love your “Lady Burl Bowl”. Sorry the burl lump was overripe, it had some very nice figure in places.
Haha, yeah me too. I remember getting so excited when I pulled up to the guys house who said he had some free oak and spotted the burl.
whose coring system did you use
That was a Oneway coring system! Very simple to use!
Have subscribed also 👍🏴
Great! Thanks alot!
What was the bottle of stuff you were putting in the crack and void's
It was thinned mylands sanding sealer. I was hoping it would firm up the punky areas and allow me to get a nicer cut off the tool.
@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks thank you
Mix A and B parts resin. Salute resin with 30% acetone and paint it on heavily to soak fibres. Repeat as often as needed for finish cuts.

Robert, are you going to SWAT this year?
I've got my tickets purchased and hotel room booked!
@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks I will see you there!
That's a good looking bowl, Robert. Was it really a burl or just a healed over limb? Take care.
Bill
Hmm, well I always thought it was a burl but I suppose I can't be 100% sure.
The wood looks like cork.
Bowl gonna be a little nut dish
use epoxy for this wood .
