Been like nine months now. Wonder if something happened to him… 😢

I found a couple nice big logs of sweet gum after the two back to back hurricanes that hit us in the Tampa region of Florida in 2024. There were so many downed trees and ruined roofs and homes. It was rough, but as a woodworker I took the opportunity to load up my chainsaw and sawzall in the car and drive around looking for quality wood for projects, specifically wood for the lathe. I found a lot of really cool woods! Passed on all the crappy sappy pines and loaded up on three different types of amazing oak. I found a large thick amazing piece of walnut with a crotch that is gonna be a big statement vase. When I was loading up on some guys oak from the curbside in front of his house, he came out and asked if I wanted this wood from this "bush-tree" that he cut down months before the storms and it turned out to be some incredible florida ironwood lol. Insane free score haha! Got some magnolia logs, and one of my new favorite looking wood, the wood from a bottlebrush tree/bush... it's beautiful. **I'm looking forward to working the sweetgum after seeing your awesome end products here.**

I didn't get anything from that video. You didn't tell us what the dimensions of the wood was when you started, how big when you were done, what kit you used, the holes to add the S & P, what you do so the top spins to grind the pepper, is the salt a grinder or a shaker?

Just recently cut some pecan. Up to 42" diameter down to 10", there oughta to be a bowl or two in that. Its been dead awhile and has some rotteness and spalting in it. Also cut some green pecan thats about 28" dia. That should result into some good projects.

Nice bowl . I always have to wear power respirator for turning cedar , wear gloves when applying finishes , and lay a wooden tray or sheet of newspaper on bed when applying finishes . Have you ever used a wedge and sledge to split out turning blanks ?

Thanks for sharing this! Wouldn't you think a ferrule might give it more stability, considering you already weakened the top end of your wood by boring the hole for the theraded insert?

Looks like a great machine Hodge. A laser and a. 3D printer are the 2 pieces of equipment that I’m kind of jonesin’ for. One day …. Looking forward to seeing some of the great stuff you do with it.

Looks like you really need to invest in a good bandsaw

Nice project. Rather than taking the time to bring up the tail stock with the drill, just put a small centered hole on the end and use a handheld drill bit with a homemade handle on it. Put it up to the centered hole and you can drill the hole in a couple seconds. Also works great for drilling a depth hole for bowls, boxes etc. A small pill or toothpick box in the shotgun shell size would be cool.
