My Ram 1500 truck ran out of battery and I took it to the nearest auto care. The battery was changed and the retractable steps would not work. They did not know what to do. Asked me to drive the truck for a day to see if anything changed. Went home and found your post. It worked!! Thank you so much...
THANK YOU!!! We have a 2021 RAM 3500 Laramie and my hubby was working on the dash installing a bunch of wiring for AUX buttons yesterday. He had the Drivers side door open, therefore that step was deployed and would NOT retract! He left it overnight, he was looking into the wiring this morning... and asked me to see if I could find anything on UA-cam. *The biggest problem was finding the right terminology!* I told him what you said to do and 1-2-3! It's fixed! I'm 62 years old, with bad knees! I can't get up and down into that big truck easily without these steps or a stepstool! Your video is AWESOME! THANK YOU so very much!
Everyone driving a GMC with this problem. I did the fuse thing, didn't work. Look through the internet. No solution. What worked for me was to unplug the module beneath the steering wheel. I then opened all the doors on the truck. Then I turned it power on. Didn't have to turn the engine over. Then plugged the module back in. Then closed all of the doors. And it worked.
My driver side is freaking stuck down.. The passenger side is working. I drive a Yukon I'ma try what you said tommorw and prob mess with the wiring and plugs if that doesn't work
Duuuude! You are a lifesaver bro! I drive a 13 Yukon XL and had the same issue. The other instruments/troubleshooting does nothing. I ended up following yours but removing the fuse and wires to the box. Disconnected the OBD2 and opened all 4 doors. Then reconnected the fuse, wires and MAGIC! Thanks again! This needs to be published somewhere more visible than just your comment on this video! Cheers!
I also encountered this problem on my 13 Silverado 1500. The boards were stuck down on the driver's side after disconnecting my battery too many times trying to resolve an unrelated issue. Searching for a solution led me to this video and ultimately to your comments about disconnecting the module, removing the AMP fuse, and opening all 4 doors. Removing the harness directly from the motor of the running board on the drivers side, disconnecting the AMP fuse and opening all 4 doors did the trick for me. The boards on the driver side went back up once connecting everything back and closing the doors. If the boards don't go back down when opening the doors, repeat the steps of removing the harness directly from the motor of the running board on the drivers side, disconnecting the AMP fuse, and opening all doors. Thank you everyone for these suggestions.
Perfect quick fix!! After changing out my batteries in my Ford F350 Lariat, my side steps were stuck in the down position... I just took out the 30 amp fuse and put it back in... And success!! Thank you!!
2016 Duramax: I removed the 30 amp fuse to the steps then reinstalled it after about a minute and it reset. It works great again. Thank you for this video.
My steps have been stuck for over A YEAR!! bc i thought it was a motor issue and watched videos that suggested just that. I unplugged and replugged the fuse and BOOM! thanks for the vid my guy😁
Got my F150 with AMP steps back from the dealer after transmission work and drivers side steps are stuck down, passengers stuck up - and light on both sides stuck on. I had seen the 30 amp inline fuse and recognized it in your video. Everything thing worked immediately after taking it out and putting it back. I am so grateful I didn’t have to take it back to the dealership. Much much appreciation.
You just saved me anywhere from $65-$135, which is what ORW quoted me to look at the problem and fix it. I did exactly as you said with the fuse and presto magic, the boards now work! You deserve a reward in heaven ha ha. Thanks brother!
Thank You This fix worked on my 2017 F-150. There's a story concerning how this happened to my truck and what some dealership service departments may be like I'm adding as a reply to this comment.
Sadly, I took my truck to a Ford dealership with an incompetent service department. I've been a backyard mechanic my whole adult life. But, now I'm a truck driver living in my Freightliner, so I don't have an appropriate place to do a repair like that. I wanted it in the hands of someone I felt I could trust, so I chose to pay the higher price a dealership will charge. I tell them I want them to replace the water pump and gasket and the two belts I believed they'd be removing anyway. The service writer needed info from the mechanic to give me an estimate. That was a bit of a red flag, but I let it slide. The service writer says they'll need the truck for two to three days, so I dropped it off Sunday night to satisfy a Monday, 7 AM appointment. On Tuesday I contact the service writer for an ETA update. He says Saturday. I was expecting my truck back by Wednesday, this guy's telling me Saturday. To make matters worse, without finding anything else wrong with my truck, he hikes up the estimate by $300. He says, after speaking to the mechanic, they always change the thermostat when doing a water pump. That certainly makes sense, but I have two problems with that. First, I had told him I already had a new thermostat and gasket and I was going to replace that myself. Second, he had a mechanic help with the original estimate. I should have been told this at that time. In addition he tells me one of the belts requires either removal or adjustment of the tensioner and this would add to labor costs. Now, I'm pretty sure both belts need to be removed to replace the water pump, so additional labor shouldn't be required. Granted, I could be wrong about the need to remove both belts. Regardless, this is another thing I should have been told during the original estimate. His excuse was that the mechanic thought he had only mentioned the one belt. I pointed out to him that still doesn't explain why the need to replace the thermostat was overlooked. On the issue of my AMP running boards I'd expect a good and experienced mechanic to anticipate this problem and know the simple solution. More importantly, the fact it wasn't pointed out to me is suspect. An attentive mechanic would notice the running boards weren't working properly after his/her work was complete. Either the mechanic is very inattentive or, just as likely, the problem was noticed and not mentioned to me. The bottom line is that Sunrise Ford in Fontana, CA has a service department which is incompetent and knows nothing of customer service. These losers will never see my truck again other than tomorrow when I give their service manager a piece of my mind.
Thank you soooo much! The husband was already blaming me for them not working. He had disconnected both batteries while the driver side step was down (I was sitting on the driver seat with door open) so it was stuck. The next day he connected batteries but the step wouldn’t budge. Found your video and in less than a minute it was fixed!! Thank you thank you thank you 😊
This is why youtube is undefeated. I said to myself as I walked back to my truck " there's no way this works". Pulls fuse.. HOLY CRAP it worked.. Man - I wish I could give you a big hug ! Thanks for saving me hours worth of work trying to "troubleshoot"
Thanks so much! I just had to disconnect 1 terminal of the battery and connect it again. Looks like that did a master reset and now the AMP steps are working. Saved the day I was so pissed at the stealership!
U saved me from a breakdown bro thank so much 😓 after replacing the motors on two of my other cars left me broke i was thinking i was going to spend a fortune on this.
I also love the internet as even the Ford Dealership could not figure it out since it is an after market item. THANK YOU SO MUCH took 5 seconds and my steps were back online! High Five to you!!!
Thank you so much. Had left my lightbar on and drained the battery really dead. Threw the battery charger on it and got that taken care of but driver side running board was staying out and the running board lights stayed on. Truck started fine but this is one of those things that eat away at me. This worked perfectly now they are just like they used to be. Thank you for doing this video!
Thanks man. I had a AAA battery service guy come by to check my batteries and he disconnected them to test. After he hooked them back up, the running boards didn't work. Of course, he had NEVER seen or HEARD of this before even though testing batteries is like his daily job. His last words were, "I guess now you have two reasons to take the truck to the dealership." Jeez. Removing and putting back in the fuse like you said was the fix.
Working!.. my vehicle was parked and didn't start up for awhile. Battery was dead.. Step won't retract. Charged battery and did the fuse thing that you've suggested and it worked. Thank you Broker!
Thank you! After the end of the long process of changing both batteries and reconnecting all my trail lights, winch and assorted other crap the steps didn’t work. You saved me from more headaches!
I have a 2006 Duramax and the boards are 16 yrs old. Replaced the batteries before and never had a problem with the boards before. I tried the fuse removal and it worked for 6 deployments and no more. Thought about it for a day and next try I opened all four doors and removed the fuse (still good) and waited 5 minutes to reset and bingo it worked! The boards came down and have worked since. I had a similar experience with the boards working randomly and replaced the module and that fixed that problem. Good luck if this happens. Easy fix.
Afterward, did you close all 4 doors first and then reinstall the fuse or reinstall the fused, then close all 4 doors. I'm having similar problems with mine and haven't had any luck getting them back up.
My passenger side wouldn't work either after battery replacement on my 2019 RAM 1500 today. My driver side no issue. I saw the pax side lites worked but step wouldnt move, so I removed fuse and put it back and everything was fine. Thanks for posting, this fixed the issue.
Hello, thanks everso much. My Ford pickup has amp running boards and after I jumped the dead battery with a jump box the driver side would go down then back up once while the door would be opened. This fix worked. I didn't drive it long enough for the battery to recharge so before jumping it again I removed the fuse. Charged the battery and Working great now. Have a great day!👍
LoL Thanks so much,I Always look for the Hardest thing first, disconnected the battery after i had them down because needed to pull body to do engine repairs on a Ford Raptor,Couldn't get them working after this fixed it thanks again
Hey man, thanks for posting this video. When my AMP power step wouldn't work after I recharged my dead battery, I had thought it was that 30 A fuse. When I found it wasn't blown, I figured I might have to reset my OBDII port. But yeah, just reinstalling the fuse worked for me as well. Just odd that I had to reset the AMP system that way this time, because when I had previously disconnected the battery to install offroad lights, it worked just fine after reconnecting the battery.
I tried this, didn’t work on my 2012 Ram 3500, so I tried another time and the second time I put the fuse in there was a little spark and I heard them fold up just a little. So I opened the door, still didn’t work. So I touched the fuse on the connector fast multiple times making little sparks and then plugged it in all the way and now they work 🤷🏼♂️ thank you for the video!!
So when washing my 21 gmc canyon my driver side would only go up 1/4 way up then stop I've tried everything nothing works so I did what u did just to bring the steps up. My next step is getting a blow dryer on the motors to see if that helps.
Thanks for this! I would not have thought to try this had I not found your tip. I'll add that the fuse did not want to come out easily so I pulled the wire harness plug from the Amp Research box under the hood and reconnected it. Got my power steps working again immediately. This was after replacing my starter battery. Perhaps this situation is caused by whatever order you connect the new battery. I did positive first and my steps refused to operate afterwards until the reset trick.
Worked for me too! I just bought my 2019 F-250 and installed new batteries.....then no running boards. With 37 tires that just wasn't going to work (feeling sorry for the guy that had to wait a year for your vid). Anyways...problem solved in 2 minutes.
Thanks. Worked for me as well so I tested to why it never did that to me before when I disconnected the battery. Come to find out it only stops working on you if the boards are down and the battery is disconnected. If the door is shut and boards up it will not need to be reset by pulling fuse out and back in.
Hey man tried this on my 2019 1500 but didn't work:/ Was the truck on or off when you did this ? and were the steps plugged in to the OBD port the whole time while you were pulling the fuse ? thanks !
Hey Broker 2016 Cummins 2500- I love the Amp Research power boards! It seems there's an intermittent problem. The boards wont work - " at its own discretion" nothing really triggers it - I know the 30 amp fuse fixes it also. My question is do you know what would cause the intermittent problem of them stopping?? Thought you might have some insight. Thanks
I run it through the wash a lot. Doesn’t mess up my boards at all. I did have a truck with electronic boards that were 11 years old and they ended up needing to be greased at year 9 forward but that’s just maintance of old stuff.
@@TheBrokerLife I just got a truck and got some amp running boards Didn’t know if going through the machine will get inside the running boards motor or not
That’s a weir solution but it worked usually in the past unplugging the OBD port plug has reset most problems but not this time thank you for the video

Glad it helped!! 👍
I pulled the fuse and re installed fuse after new battery install on 2017 Ford f250 steps work again thanks for the video love UA-cam University
Glad it helped!! 😃
This worked for my 2020 silverado. Thanks!
No problem 👍
Thanks. Worked for me as well so I tested to why it never did that to me before when I disconnected the battery.
Come to find out it only stops working on you if the boards are down and the battery is disconnected.
If the door is shut and boards up it will not need to be reset by pulling fuse out and back in.
Very cool to know! Thanx!
Hey man tried this on my 2019 1500 but didn't work:/ Was the truck on or off when you did this ? and were the steps plugged in to the OBD port the whole time while you were pulling the fuse ? thanks !
Did you get it figured out? I think my truck was off and the steps where plugged in.
Just commenting to say this worked for me 🎉
Great! 👍
Thnx bud. It worked perfectly!
You're welcome!
Hey Broker
2016 Cummins 2500- I love the Amp Research power boards! It seems there's an intermittent problem. The boards wont work - " at its own discretion" nothing really triggers it - I know the 30 amp fuse fixes it also. My question is do you know what would cause the intermittent problem of them stopping?? Thought you might have some insight. Thanks
Hey! Good question but unfortunately I have no idea on that one. Did you figure it out?
Thank you
Question
Do you hand wash your truck or run it through a machine wash?
Does it mess up your boards if you do run through the wash
I run it through the wash a lot. Doesn’t mess up my boards at all. I did have a truck with electronic boards that were 11 years old and they ended up needing to be greased at year 9 forward but that’s just maintance of old stuff.
@@TheBrokerLife I just got a truck and got some amp running boards
Didn’t know if going through the machine will get inside the running boards motor or not
@@ericchatman7220 nope you are all good 👍
Life saver!! Thanks for sharing!! 2017 f150
Glad it helped! I had no idea for a long time before I figured it out haha
Life saver dude - thanks man
Glad it helped!
Simple fix on mine, I changed the battery and the plug some how got disconnected from the main power box. Plugged it in and boom back to normal.
Nice!
lol
Took mine to dealer 130$ later they had no idea.
So I unplugged from under the dash.
Plugged back in .no more issue.
Haha! 🤣
Thank you so much it worked on my 2021 Ram 1500
You are welcome!
That’s a weir solution but it worked usually in the past unplugging the OBD port plug has reset most problems but not this time thank you for the video
Glad it helped! 👍

Hopefully this works for my truck. Same truck just changed out batteries and they won't open.
Did it work?
Ok well your missing a few steps, is the car on or off. Did you uplug the obd2 connection under the dash or kept it plugged it? Things you need to add
Don’t over think it. Just unplug the fuse… lol 😂
That worked thank you!
