I couldn't agree more! I passed on purpose-built gobos for budgetary reasons, but I didn't skimp on 5" 2x4 panels. I have found it very useful to grab one or more panels from the wall and place them around the source to create a more controlled space. Great tip!!

I have considered using one in my very small space so it can double as a video background with the right fabric covering.

I am a little bit unsure if the gobos need to have a solid barrier either on one side, or in the middle, sandwiched between rockwool. Can you explain what difference having a solid barrier does? For context, I would like to create some gobos, and when mixing place them in my first reflection points (on the sides) since my room does not have symmetry there. I would also like to use these gobos when recording to minimize spill into the overhead drum mics.

Being a certified acoustics consultant I'll just say your approach is pure nonsense!! If you don't know why and I understand if not, so many get bad info and shotgun their approach with no strategic plan. Rock-wool and fiberglass are not for acoustic treatment, Scientific fact!!!

What is a good and affordable material we can use to make acoustic panels if not Rockwool/fiberglass?

I believe he was giving insights in variable acoustic space constricted single rooms. Not everyone can afford a 500 sq meter, multimillion dollar facility, w/ ebu rated mix control rooms with separate drum isolation, vocal booths and bright and warm reverb recording halls.
I remember Madonna's first recording where you could hear the service elevator come up and down in the mix.
By the way, you are correct in not using fiberglass or rockwool but that is only for over 500+ seating capacity venues like Churches and auditoriums 😂😅 where reflection, diffusion and conservation of energy is the norm with 2+ seconds recommend RT60
