Home Recording Studio Design by Philip Newell - amzn.to/4b7zyxd
Master Handbook Of Acoustics by F. Alton Everest and Ken Pohlmann: amzn.to/3Olwio7
I typically design home recording studios, but a home theater uses the exact same principles for isolation. In this article I will go over my favorite, floor, wall, ceiling and door designs for a home theater.
1) Pick The Room Size
Now a home theater is not a recording studio, but room acoustics are still very important. You want to hear the dialogue in your favorite movie and you want the bass to hit crips and hard without a lot of mud.
The best way to ensure you have a great starting place for room acoustics is to get some favorable room dimensions right off the bat. To do this I recommend starting with the Sepmeyer Ratios, but also using a tool called AMROC that is free to use online.
I have a great video that goes in depth on room ratios and how to use the tools here: ua-cam.com/video/mpZsn9FcZnQ/v-deo.html
The main thing is to not get overwhelmed by room ratios, but see if you can use them to your advantage when designing the floor plan and ceiling height of your proposed theater.
2) Build On A Concrete Slab
When you build in a basement or garage or new addition with a concrete slab you don't have to do anything to soundproof the floor. This is a huge cost saver. Concrete is super heavy and concrete in the earth gives you plenty of isolation for a home theater. For this reason I would never build a home theater on a wood deck on the first or second floor of a house. It just isn't the right place for a soundproof home theater.
3) Use A Double Wall System
Next your walls should be two 2x4 walls with a 1" air gap between them. The walls should each have some owens corning pink insulation in them and should have 2-4 layers of 5/8" type X drywall on them. If the outside wall is your concrete basement wall then simply build a new wall at least 1" from the existing concrete wall. Below is a diagram of a typical double wall system.
4) Use A Decoupled Ceiling
The best option for your ceiling is to decouple the drywall from your existing ceiling joists. If you have the room to lose some ceiling height you could frame a new ceiling off your inside wall of the double wall system, but this is usually not the case in most homes where ceiling height is limited. For this reason, I recommend using acoustic clips like the I-B1 Clips, Whisper Clips, or Hush Frame Rafts attached to the ceiling joists and then attaching furring channel to those clips. You then will hang 2-4 layers of 5/8" drywall from those clips.
***NOTE*** How much drywall should you use? For a home theater I would recommend 3-4 layers of drywall because of the low sub woofer bass. Low frequencies require more mass so use as much drywall as you can afford.
5) Soundproof Door Design
Ideally, your home theater would have only one door since soundproof doors are expensive. I recommend using a communicating door system where you have one door on each side of your double wall system. The key with your doors is that they are heavy and air tight. I have a great video that goes in depth into my soundproof door design here: ua-cam.com/video/2Rm1DC5HTfg/v-deo.html
I recommend using solid core doors and then adding mass to them using 3/4" plywood. Then I recommend buying acoustic seals that will surround all four sides of each of your soundproof doors. This way your doors will be as soundproof as your walls and you will not have a weak point in your home theater where sound can come in or out.
Conclusion:
I hope this article gave you a starting point from which to dive deeper into what it takes to properly soundproof a home theater. Bass traps do work and help. The point is that small rooms have more bass problems than larger rooms. This means you are starting off in a more difficult place before even treating the room.

    This is the only video I've seen of this guy and literally his argument is that 'the stuff is too good, other areas suck'. First off dude, just make sure your door has a divider to prevent direct sound flow. Two, put acoustic foam on the outside of the door to help stop waves from traveling through.. I literally just wanted to see if MLV is good for a subfloor for dampening, this video did nothing except throw around logical fallacies while at the same time using data from a direct competitor of MLV to say it's better...

    • @soundproofyourstudio

    Thank you! I've been waiting for this one! For a lot of us, space is at a premium. What is your take on staggered studs between rooms? Double wall system (two 2x4's + 1" gap + 5/8 drywall x four) is about 10.5" floor space while staggered studs on a 2x6 is about 8" or on a 2x4 is about 6". Granted on a 2x4 you'd have to use 2x3's, maybe even placed perpendicularly, to have enough staggered space for insulation. STC is around 55 with 2x6 plate with staggered 2x4s. Do you think that would be adequate for most basement situations? My feeling is home theaters need to be less "perfect" as recording studios as you don't want the perfect recording session ruined by hearing a neighbor yelling at kids to "get off my lawn" with a megaphone. 😄

    • @soundproofyourstudio
      @soundproofyourstudio 5 днів тому

      It all depends on what you want for isolation. There is never a perfect answer. I would say if STC 55 is good for your needs go for it. Space is valuable and losing it may be worse than the added isolation.

    One thing to note about building on a concrete slab is that it may eat up your tactile bass performance. I had to add Buttkickers to my theater as the concrete was not transferring any tactile bass feel from my subs. Or you could probably oversize your subs for the room to try and get that back.

    I totally understand the logical conclusion you arrived at, but Iso rooms have a ton of unique utility. Provided it's an iso room that's been well constructed and built with acoustic design in mind. Not sure a 2'x2' closet is pulling it off. A lot of singers just like stepping into a room free of judgement, where they can belt out 50 takes, crack their voice in the bridge, and perform the song like it's the only thing that exists. It also allows bass and guitar players to isolate the output of their amplifiers and hear what the mics are actually doing while tracking overdubs (often inside the control room and assuming you don't have a live room).

    • @soundproofyourstudio
      @soundproofyourstudio 5 днів тому

      Good points! The iso room can still do that but in a pro studio it should be on the larger side for acoustics. Nobody wants to do that though for utility like you mentioned.

    Once the concrete slab is in place and the structure is built on top of it, how should I install flooring in the studio? Would carpet be suitable, or is vinyl planking a better option? How should we proceed to place the floor on top of the slab?

    • @soundproofyourstudio

    nice video. thank you. question. In my existing basement I am going for adaptive or variable foil/film. I will use metal studs as well. Knauf System. Would it be possible to put the film/foil within the 2 drywall layers as well? It would be pretty heavy acoustic knauf boards (EU) so base material is standard dry wall but bit more density. In my setup it will be 40mm Insulation on the wall without gap. 80mm in the metal frame/stud. 2 drywall sheets. then there will be a 60mm installation layer with cables etc and insulation and one drywall sheet. I might want to up the 120mm inside insulation to 180mm to prevent to move the condensation threshold to the inside as well. (1/3rd rule?)

    You are correct about the weakest link being an area of focus. Removing MLV makes walls equally as bad as doors and windows. Doubling up doors and windows is the best way to go. That makes them as soundproof as your MLV sandwiched or green glued walls.

    Thanks for sharing the video. I'm building a house with a studio for podcasting. I was considering spending $3500 for Acoutiblok and $2000 for labor for a 16'x16'x9' room in addition to the drywall and insulation batts. You are the third resource that has indicated that soundproofing is only as good as its weakest link. It's like a solid titanium boat with a small hole in it, you will still leak water in. I'll spend my money on improving the door and adding an insert to the windows (required by code) adding more mass via double layers of 5/8" drywall. Very good comments from others on this thread.

And in case of not using drywall would two layers of 18mm mdf give the same output?

    • @soundproofyourstudio

      So you have one extra wall there. Use the concrete as outer wall and then the air gap and new wall. It is all about mass. If 18mm msg is similar or exceeds 2.2lb/sq ft then you are good.

    Great resource! With a room in a room, does it make sense to caulk all corners where timbere meets timber or OSB meets timber?

    • @soundproofyourstudio
      @soundproofyourstudio 16 днів тому

      Yes on the final layer. I think it is overkill to caulk each layer.

      @@soundproofyourstudio And does that go for the outer room of the 2 would you say? I.e. the outer shell. Or is that overkill?

    I used Safe & Sound in a box like structure to dampen the sound from my very noisy dust collector. It made a huge difference. Probably reduced the db by at least 80%.

      Awesome! It might do the trick I. Some situations, but I don’t use it for higher level sounds or low frequencies.

    I'm in the current stage of designing my studio now. It will be built from the ground up and I'm curious how you connect the roof rafters to the walls without coupling rhe walls together in a double wall setup.

    • @soundproofyourstudio
      @soundproofyourstudio 16 днів тому

      These days I say don’t attach the inner wall to anything but the concrete slab and the other walls. It is not load bearing and by the time it is all finished it isn’t going anywhere. I only attach using iso clips at the door to help with sway bracing.

    • @theaffirmativecarnivore
      @theaffirmativecarnivore 16 днів тому

      @soundproofyourstudio okay. That makes sense to me now. I was thinking the double wall would continue to the ceiling as well. (Double ceiling wall). But if it's just a standalone wall, that makes total sense. Thank you.

    Where I live all parts of a building are made of brick and cement or concrete, and we dont use insulation because we barely have changes in temperature in the diffetent seasons, how should I do this second wall in my case?

    • @soundproofyourstudio
      @soundproofyourstudio 16 днів тому

      I would build a stud wall if possible or another masonry wall with insulation in it. Try to get the biggest air gap you can afford to give up space for.

    You probably don't have to be a civil engineer but your math needs to be spot on for those isolators. I still wonder about liquid rubber for applications such as this, especially as a buffer hanging drywall. Just slapping on some liquid rubber onto a bottom plate would be so much easier but, unfortunately...at least as far as I can tell, there are no studies or data on how well that would work. Floating a wall is like adding resilient channels for drywall: if it's done perfectly it could help tremendously but, if not, a whole lot of time, energy and resources could be for naught.

    • @soundproofyourstudio
      @soundproofyourstudio 16 днів тому

      Yes, that sums up soundproofing. Rubber certainly would help, but again you would want to know if it will isolate sound based on the mass applied to it.

    In a basement, what about isolating the wall connection to the ceiling?

    • @soundproofyourstudio
      @soundproofyourstudio 16 днів тому

      Try not to connect the wall to the ceiling if possible. If not use isolation clips. I have used I-B3 clips and Mason industries whisper clips are great.

    @4:25 The triple leaf effect is not caused by a reduction of the air gap. The difference between #3 and #6 is only 1.25" air gap; that cannot explain the 23dB difference. The triple leaf effect is caused by sound resonating from the first wall onto the studs then to the second wall, then to the 3rd wall. Because the walls are so large, they resonate a lot of sound energy. In #6, the studs resonate the sound energy onto the other studs, but because the studs have such a small surface area, they don't resonate much energy.

    • @soundproofyourstudio
      @soundproofyourstudio 16 днів тому

      Interesting point, I will want to research this more to validate your claim. I will say that the air gap difference is from inside drywall to inside drywall so more than 1.25”.

    • @veryslyfox
      @veryslyfox 15 днів тому

      @@soundproofyourstudio Look again. The difference in air gap between #3 and #6 is just the two sheets of inner drywall, which is 0.625" x 2 = 1.25"

    • @soundproofyourstudio
      @soundproofyourstudio 15 днів тому

      Oh I see what you mean. So the air gap is actually way larger than 1.25”. It is not insulation to insulation but rather the space from inner drywall to inner drywall. So in #6 that means 8 inches.
