In this video we discuss monitor placement, and how getting that right is critical to your listening environment before you even start to think about adding acoustic treatment. The bass end is very difficult to get right, so finding the best position for both you and your speakers in the room is key. And moving your speakers around is not only time well spent, but it's FREE!

As a poor producer, I just put on my walls some mattresses inside slatted bed boxes and covered each one with a beautiful dark grey-blue cotton fitted sheet. And now my room sounds like a padded room from a psychiatric hospital.

That’s a great idea! I’ve done similar things many times and it’s always yielded great results! I think there was a scientific study done that actually showed towels to be more effective in sufficient depth than Rockwool... I’ll try and find it!

Lots of common sense here… rare for a UA-cam video! I’ve been setting up control rooms for 30 years, and it’s amazing how many simple mistakes people make. The biggest one? Designing the room and buying acoustic treatments before listening to the space first! Great advice.

Might not be the problem, but I feel happier about moving stuff around now knowing what a possible cause could be.

Except it's wrong to try to assess sound through listening. Measurements are the only way to achieve true accuracy. Subjective findings will never produce a truly accurate end result. One thing I fully concur in this video is the importance of bass treatment. It's mostly neglected, yet it's the hardest thing to get right. And if the bass is off, 80% of the energy of your audio is off.

I thought my bandmate had bought awful monitors for our practice / demo recording space as there was no low end to speak of until I got up and walked around the room and realized it was a cancellation issue as the bass came back when standing off to the side. I still had my doubts about his used monitors, so I brought a set over I was very familiar with and when placed on the desk area where the computer is I was mortified at how bad they sounded haha. I think I will show him this video since he was surprised that you can't just set some speakers anywhere in a room and expect them to sound good!

In my studio I use the basic approach of very nearfield monitoring (1.0 to 1.4 meters)from my three pairs of Neumann monitors and one Neumann subwoofer with one of the pair. All are in an equlateral triangle configuration(1.0 to 1.4 meters). I also have a large control room - 6 meters x 13 meters. Treating the room to control low freqencies is critical. Standing waves have to be killed.

Great content, thank you! I have an odd room setup that I am nearing the measuring stage. Rectangular-ish, one corner is 1m deeper though making it non symetrical. The ceiling also pitches up toward that same side by about 30-40 cm. All in all about 9m long by 6m wide by 3.5m tall. I am sharing the space wih my wife, who is a textile hoarder (designer), so I built a giant diffuser for the middle of the room that holds about 1 metric ton of fabric on the rear of it to both dampen itself and the room somewhat. Then the corners on my side also hold the rest of the rolls of fabric on 3 tiered, triangular shelving. About 30-40 each. Then I received a ton of acoustic absorbers from another studio. 2x4 feet by 6inches as well as 2inches and then 14 half cylinder absorbers/diffusers. Gonna be interesting.....maybe a little frustrating....

38% rule of the room length by Ethan Winer just worked for me once upon a time, just set and forget, but equal triangle is not pretty much, closer but not exactly in terms of details. And then Dirac another set and forget tool brought 200% of details from behringers 2031a. And the last one - Harman in room target adds 1000% of detail to the bass response. Now Voxengo Span on the fastest speed tells me exactly every damn note or hit that I'm hearing right now. Sound is a great miracle indeed!

I wondered what you would come up with, and it surprised me as it pleased me. Love your approach and the pragmatic way to work to a good sounding room and not starting with buy 20 absorption panels and job done...... Most advise I have seen, as I am reading now to prepare me for my new future room as we are moving house, is more of the same. You need a lot of knowledge to even begin understanding all the measuring tools, graphs, technical principles and what have you. So, using your ears may not be such a bad solution in the end, taking time to get the best seems even more valuable. Of-course as a mastering engineer your ears are trained.
I was wondering on the computerscreen situation, also expected a screen on the same line or even behind the line of the monitors should fine, but seems still to impact. Do you think that is reflected sound coming from the back of the room bouncing to the screen or what...? Have you tested with vertical angling the screen to have it less bouncing the mids and highs backwards to the listening position? Also, IF this is the root cause, would you need diffusors at the back wall..?? How about a frame around the screen with absorption material for mid / high?
As a last, really LOVE your comment on EQ, not boosting dips as a general is what I have learned, but see only few others do. Most people seem to favour boosting the "missing" instead of cutting the dominant peaks. Maybe it is more natural, as you "miss" a frequency range so boost it, but it is dominated by some other. Also true in a mix, don't hear the kick so boost 60 Hz, but it is dominated by the Bass or synth, so decrease those on 60 Hz (find a balance so they are all there) and the Kick pops-up.
May I add one of my favourites; If you try something and it does not "work" don't throw the idea away, because most likely something else is way more dominant for your idea to be noticeable. Find that first and then try your idea again. As an example, the PC you use is "slow", so we add more memory as most people advise to do that. The effect is not noticeable so remove the memory again and buy a faster CPU, still no effect. Than you replace the old hard-disk for n SSD version, and your PC start to fly. Than replace the CPU and again it is faster. Same with memory. SO the CPU and memory were a good solution but the slow disk masked / limited the effect of the other improvements.
Keep-up the good work, but maybe a tiny bit faster (if you find time?).

I just saw this video earlier this evening. I am a determined audiophile and have been serious about music reproduction for many year but still struggling to get my room acoustics right. I happened to see another video about why to set speakers close to the wall from GIK Acoustics, explaining how that moving them away from the wall can creat a phase problem with the sound bouncing back and being out of phase at the time it hits your ears and then I saw this video. I use vintage Yamaha 3 way studio monitors . I removed all acoustic treatment on the front wall placed the speakers in the corner against the wall, located the best listening position and bam it was exactly what I thought was possible in my rooom . It has saved me a lot of money I was going to spend on more room treatment. Your exactly correct sometimes what is the accepted way and expected way is not always the best. THANKS SO MUCH.

But also do panels need to be so deep, could you make 120 mm, I need to hang them, just thinking of weight. Obviously with the smaller panel you'll lose some effectiveness but does anyone know, is it still worth doing?
