  • This is a review/test of the SH-2 hot plate magnetic stirrer. I purchased this for $51.80 on eBay with shipping included. For the price, I was skeptical and you never know exactly with eBay sometimes. A hot plate is extremely useful when conducting distillations and here I give some feedback on my first impressions and testing it by boiling water in a beaker. Overall, pretty pleased with it. I'll make a ton of other videos in the future once the rest of my distillation stuff comes in the mail and so I'll have plenty of other chances to make sure it works properly. The test begins at 3:00 minutes.

    The fact is as i was told by a four E's representative,(We make all the copys you see with different labels! They pay us a fee for using their name on our products! ) so if you see the same mixer with different company names, there is only one company responsible for making it! Take care

    I used it a few times with high temperatures. Today I wanted to heat up something and it just stopped working; I heard some weird sounds it seemed like internals were melting and after that the plate just stayed cold the entire time. This surprised me because i only had it on low heat

    I bet the smoke is paper masking tape sticking the insulation down inside the hotplate part. It's a common problem with cheap chinese reflow soldering ovens.

    I know this is old but do you know if this can heat low? I need something that can maintain about 60c, they always say the max temp but it's hard to find cheap things that say they start from 0, everything for cooking starts at like 200c

    • @llkg9
      @llkg9 Рік тому

      Hi. Did you ever finding a suitable hotplate? I'm in a similar situation (sometimes needing to maintain as low as 38C/100F) but haven't found minimums listed (except in some customer reviews where the plates start at 93C/200F).

      @@llkg9 yes I bought this one above, I don't know the exact temperature as I'm just going of the specifications of the material I'm heating haha but I think you'll be fine with this one, I think it starts "heating" below ambient, so any heating level works if that makes sense, because it doesn't have any readout oor markings on the knob and it isn't instant like a flame, it does get a bit hard to judge whether you've got it set to the right temp though, you might think it's low enough but it just keeps rising, in my actual using it, it can definitely at least maintain handleable temperature if you set it right , whatever that is (around 40?), I can't vouch for lower but I think it would, it's surprisingly nice quality too, I'd recommend it.

    the fumes were probably some oil residue from manufacturing.

    Hey, an update from me.
    I've bought this product and it broke the first time I've used it.
    thankfully, I filmed it all - from the unboxing untill the minute it broke. So I would probably get a full refund.
    The video is now being uploaded to my channel. It's nothing interesting, just proof that what I'm saying really happened. after the smoke it stop working completely.

      Benja shoot. That sucks. Good on you for getting it on video so you have something to show for the return. These things are cheap but so far haven’t had problems with mine. I’m sure that not all are made to the same standards though. Well I’ll make another video of the SH3 when that comes in and you can check that out.

      This is because these companies have no quality control departments anymore! They just thrive on greed and quantity and never quality! So sad as we are not made of money, and some of us literally sacrifice certain basic needs to get our chemistry equipment and we wait impatiently for them to get to us only to find that either the goods we waited for are malfunctioning, glassware broken do to their shipping department not giving a shit and just packing the 2 500 ml flasks in a bag and shipping it ( happened to me so many times! ) the days of getting decent equipment at a reasonable price are all but over! Now we have to spend a lot more money and even then keep fingers crossed that everything is ok! I feel all you fellow amateur and students who are strapped for cash, pain!!!😢 take care my brothers! Keep the faith!

    Hi, thank you for the review. You mentioned that you are using the stirrer for perfumery, I have interest in perfumery as well. My question is, is it able to totally dilute absolute to carrier oil? Do you have any experience about this matter? Thank you very much. Your reply is much appreciated :)

    • @thebiomajor5750
      @thebiomajor5750  5 років тому

      Hi Riztica! Thanks for your comment. I haven't used a carrier oil for perfume making. Perfumer's alcohol is almost 100% ethanol, which I make myself from fermenting sugar. In the sugar wash video, I have detailed this process, but I calculated it is considerably cheaper to make yourself. That said it's not too expensive. I also just enjoy making stuff myself. I don't own any absolutes myself but I do have some tinctures that are solid and mix well when heated. If you haven't checked them out already, there's a great company called perfumer's apprentice where I buy essential oils I cannot extract myself. I use the hotplate primarily to boil organic matter to get the oils. I hope that answers your question and points you in the right direction. I have another video called Bay Rum Perfume where I show some of the oils I purchased from the perfumer's apprentice. Let me know how your journey goes with perfumery!

    • @frostedlambs
      @frostedlambs 2 роки тому

      When you say dilute absolute I’m confused what you mean by this, do you mean completely dissolve, most things that have a hard time dissolving in a solution it often helps to add more liquid as in more oil or water to dissolve any solids and heating it up will just help that go faster but you should only need to heat it up to 70degrees C to speed it up maybe 80 90 but going past 100 you run the risk of it becoming solid again when it cools down, this way you should know how much oil or liquid you need

    • @thebiomajor5750
      @thebiomajor5750  3 роки тому +1

      @@TheHappyNoona The magnetic stirrer could most likely mix them once they were melted. You could drop it in afterward. But as far as stirring, this is probably your best bet besides doing it by hand as the heat can be maintained simultaneously. But I don’t know much about the process.

    Curious, was this a 1000ml capactiy model? Also where did u find that thermometer?

    • @thebiomajor5750
      @thebiomajor5750  5 років тому +4

      Derk Nizotts do you mean, will it fit a 1000mL beaker? If that’s your question, the size of the actual plate would barely fit one. I actually just got a 1000mL beaker and I’ve since ordered the SH3 model to accommodate it. The SH3 model has a 7”x7” plate compared to this SH2 model with its 4.7”x4.7”. So, although this would suffice for most stuff I think, my bigger one that arrives this Wed, will allow me to use much bigger flasks and beakers. I’m really into distilling essential oils too so having the ability to heat a 2000mL flask allows me to process much more oil at once. I got the thermometer off eBay as well for $4.40 from corale49. There are several measurement capacities available but the one I chose was -30 to 100C. The nice thing about glass thermometers is that you can use them with acidic reactions as there’s no metal to interact with. I bet by now though someone’s come up with a glass coated digital thermometer though.

      Gonzlo Carrera Cool! The bigger hot plate is useful if you want to make larger quantities of stuff, like I ended up wanting to distill more ethanol since it was quite a process so having a bigger hot plate made the batches worth doing but this small one will still get hot, it just doesn’t fit large flasks, say 3000mL. But if you’re working with smaller amounts of reagents, you shouldn’t have a problem. Really though check out my other video comparing the sizes since I have actual dimensions in that one.
